Adjusted calculation date - The day on which the planetary position shown in an Ephemeris coincides with the progressed positions of the planets. The adjusted calculation date (also called the artificial birthday) remains the same from year to year.

Advantage, Line of - An imaginary axis that connects the third decan of the third and ninth houses. The Moon's North Node east of this axis is thought to be in a favorable or advantageous position.

Affinity - A mutual attraction or innate congeniality between planets.

Affliction - A term from traditional astrology used to describe adverse aspects, especially those formed by malefics.

Aftershock - A "retriggering" of an old aspect or planetary storm by the passage of faster moving planets across sensitive degrees. This releases the original energies in a series of smaller steps. This series of contacts allows you to bring important lessons home at a very personal level, spaced out over a long period of time.

Age, astrological - A period of about 2,150 years, or one-twelfth of the Great Year of approximately 25,800 years. It represents the time required for the vernal equinox to retrograde through the thirty-degree arc of one constellation. According to many astrologers, the Earth is now moving from the Piscean Age into the Aquarian Age.

Air - One of the 4 classical elements, representing the traits of rational thinking, communication and relating to others. The air signs are Gemini, Libra, Aquarius.

Air Element - One of the four astrological elements. A masculine element, it stands for intellect, media, matters to do with communications and so on. The other elements are, Fire, Water and Earth.

Air signs - Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, traditionally associated with the air element .

Akashic records - Akashic is a Sanskrit term referring to the etheric substratum of the universe. A permanent record of every event, sound, sight, or thought that has occurred during the history of creation is stamped upon this electro-spiritual substance.

Alcocoden - Alchochoden, "the giver of the years", meaning the planet which in the natal chart reveals the number of years that the person is going to live.

Aldebaran - A malefic Fixed Star in the 10th degree of Gemini. One of the four Royal Stars.

Alfridaria - Derived from the mixed Arabic and Persian "al firdar", the alfridaria, or alfridaries, are a system of planetary periods of Persian origin. Originally intended for the long term forecasting of historical events, they can also be used in predicting for individual charts.

Algol - Caput Algol, a malefic fixed star in the 27th degree of Taurus.

Almuten - A planet which, because of its placing, dignities, fortitudes and aspects, comes to have more importance than the ruler, be it of the whole chart or of any particular house of the chart.

Almuten of any house - is that planet who has most dignities in the sign ascending or descending upon the cusp of any house, whereon, or from whence, you require your judgment.

Almuten of a figure - is that planet who in Essential and Accidental dignities, is most powerful in the whole Scheam of Heaven.

Alpheta - Giver of Life. The alphetical places corresponds with the places of Hyleg.

Anabibazon - Dragon's Head (north lunar node).

Anangke - One of the three fates referred to by hellenistic philosophers, meaning agnoia, or unwit. Also known as ignorance. Thought to be associated with Saturn.

Anareta - A planet severely afflicting the Hyleg at birth and by direction. Usually a malefic, but any planet can be the Anareta. It is believed to portend the cause of death.

Anaretic Degree - The 29th degree of any Sign. It is also known as the degree of fate.

Anaretic place - the final degree (between 29° and 30°) of any sign, also called the degree of fate. Planets and house cusps that occupy anaretic degrees indicate fundamental issues with which one must deal.

Anaxagoras - Greek 500-428 B.C., studied in Egypt and thought the Sun went under a flat Earth each night.

Angles -The Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven and Medium Coeli; the four cardinal points in a horoscope.

Angular - Pertaining to the Angles. Angular houses are generally the strongest and angular planets must be especially noted.

Angular houses -The first, fourth, seventh and tenth houses. In a quadrant system, the angles form the cusps of these houses. They are also referred to as cardinal houses because they are ruled naturally by cardinal signs and express cardinal qualities.

Animal signs - Refers to the animal signs which are: Aries, Taurus, Leo, the second half of Sagittarius and all of Capricorn.

Animoder of Tetrabiblos - A method of birth time rectification, now obsolete, presented by Ptolemy. Sometimes refered to as the Sunrise Indicator.

Antipathy - Inharmonious relations between planets, which rule or are exalted in opposite signs. Also, conflict between the natal horoscope of two people corresponding with the aversion they feel for each other.

Antiscia - From the Greek, literally shadows on the other side, opposite shadows; mirror or reflection points. A degree and its antiscion are equidistant from a particular reference point such as the MC-IC or summer-winter solstice axis. The use of antiscia is common to Uranian Astrology.

Antiscion - the shadow of a planet.

Aphelion - The point in a planet's orbit that is most distant from the Sun.

Aphesis - The greek word for releasing, as in the releasing of a debt. Often used in connection with time lords governing periods of an individuals life.

Aphetic places(alphetical places) -Those parts of a horoscope from 5° above the Ascendant to 25° below, from 5° below the Descendant to 25° above, and from 5° preceeding the ninth house cusp to the middle of the eleventh house. Benefics that occupy these areas are said to be life supportive. Also called hylegiacal places.

Aphrodite - One of the greek gods, has references to the planet Venus.

Apogee - The point in a planet's orbit that is most distant from Earth.

Apotelesma - The greek word for astrological influence literally meaning "outcomes".

Application - The approach of one planet to another planet to the exact degree to form an aspect or the approach of a planet to the cusp of a house.

Applying aspect - One in which the significator is moving toward partile as opposed to a separating aspect in which the significator is moving away from partile.

Approaching aspect - An aspect in which the significator is moving toward the promittor in natural order of the zodiac . An approaching aspect is thought to have an outward, socially-oriented significance as opposed to a departing aspect.

Aquarian Age -The Great Year that begins around the turn of the twenty-first century and lasts for two thousand years. Universal developments of an Aquarian nature are expected to take place during this era.

Arabian Parts- Developed during the Middle Ages in Arabia, each part derived from three points in a horoscope, indicates a sensitive point that relates the three factors involved. There are hundreds of Arabic Parts. The most popular one is the Part of Fortune.

Arc -In astrology, the curved path of a stellar body and the angular measurement of this path.

Aries - One of the greek gods, has references to the planet Mars.

Articulate signs- Signs that symbolize speaking facility, namely Gemini, Virgo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius.

Ascendant -The degree of the zodiac rising over the eastern horizon of the birthplace at the moment of birth. This degree forms the first house cusp of a horoscope and is of great personal significance in the character and life of the individual.

Ascending node -The zodiacal point at which a planet crosses the ecliptic from south to north. Also called the north node.

Ascending planet - Any planet in the eastern section of a horoscope is ascending, i.e., moving toward the Midheaven. The term is usually reserved for those planets in the fourth quadrant.

Ascension (long and short) - Due to the obliquity of the ecliptic, some signs rise over the horizon faster than others. Signs of long ascension require more time to rise than signs of short ascension. In the northern hemisphere, the signs of long ascension are Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius. South of the equator, these are signs of short ascension.

Ascensional times - Similar to progressions, refers to the number of degrees that pass over the meridian in the time that a given zodiac sign rises. Used in connection with forcasting events, also known as circumambulation, or primary direction.

Aspect -The angular relationship between two planets or a planet and an angle. Zodiacal aspects are based upon zodiacal longitude; parallels and counter parallels are based on declination, the position of points of interest relative to the celestial equator. Zodiacal aspects are also called harmonics.

Aspect pattern - Particular combinations of aspects that form special planetary configurations.

Asterism - Smaller constellation.

Asteroids- Small planets or pieces of planets, most of which are found in the Asteroid Belt, that part of space between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

Astral Traveling - This roaming of the spiritual self while the physical body remains inert; involves the body's chakras.

Astral twins- Two persons who may be unrelated and born at different times and in different places whose horoscopes are very nearly alike. This term is sometimes applied to persons whose Sun, Moon and Ascendant coincide zodiacally even though other planets occupy different positions in the two horoscope.

Astroanalyst -The astrological equivalent of a psychoanalyst.

Astrolabe - An ancient instrument employed for measuring the angular position of Sun and stars, used also to project the celestial sphere on the plane of the equator.

Astrologer - One who practices astrology.

Astrologian - One who teaches astrology.

Astrologist - Non-professional who believes in or studies but does not necessarily practice astrology.

Astrology - The science of relationships as measured by correlations between the movements of celestial bodies and circumstances and events on earth. The art of interpreting the meanings of these relationships. Some branches of astrology are : electional, esoteric, horary, medical, meteorological, and mundane.

Athazer - A term applied by the ancients to the Moon when it forms an exact conjunction, semi-square, square, quincunx or opposition with the Sun or is separated from the sun by 12° or 160°.

Aura - A subtle quality or atmosphere emanating form a living being, object, or place.

Avatar Point - A nickname for the 15th degree of the signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Many astrologers consider these 4 points to be "entry points" for important spiritual energies.

Average daily moon - The average motion of a planet during a 24 hour period. Traveling slower than average is a debility. The following list gives the Average Daily Motion of the seven visible planets from a geocentric point of view:

Aversion - A lack of acknowledgement between zodiac signs based on aspects of 30 and 150 degrees.This aspect was considered very unfortunate by the ancients, but is not held to be unduly evil by modern Western astrologers.

Ayanamsa - The difference between the starting point of the Tropical and Sidereal Zodiacs, due to the precession of the equinoxes. There are several in use in India today, but the official government-sanctioned Lahiri ayanamsha is the most widely used.

Azimene - Deficient or "Weak" degrees which are traditionally held to cause tendency to lameness, deformity, or other disability such as blindness.

Badhakadhipati - Lord of obstructions. A planet, which invariably creates difficulties whenever it gets a chance to do so. Such a planet has the capacity to destroy the auspicious effects of lucky planets.

Bahudhanya - 12th of the 60-year cycle of Samvatsara . It is ruled by Brahma. Individuals born during this year are bestowed with religious learning, skill in different arts, and humility in disposition.

Bahya Rasi - Also known as Bhoga Rasi. A term used in Jaimini Astrology for deciding the planetary ruler ship operating at any time. It is identified by counting the Dvara Rasi or the house under consideration from the ascendant, and extending the distance further by the same distance.

Bajra Yoga - A planetary combination under which all benefices are located in the 1st and 7th houses in a natal chart. It makes the individual good-natured and lucky during the first and the last phase of his life.

Balsamic Moon - The Moon less than 45° behind the natal Sun according to natural zodiacal order. A natal balsamic Moon is associated with one's commitment to destiny.

Balsamic Phase - When a more quickly orbiting planet trails a planet with a slower orbit and appears to "catch up" with the slower body, and the planets are within 45 degrees of one another in their orbital cycles, astrologers say that the faster moving planet is in its Balsamic Phase. Deals with your dedication to your destiny.

Barren Planets - Sun, Uranus, Saturn and Mars. These planets (along with the Dragon's Tail, or Moon's South Node) tend to prevent the birth, or cause early death, of children when located in either of the parents' fifth or eleventh houses.

Barren signs - Gemini, Leo and Virgo, traditionally associated with infertility. Aries, Sagittarius and Aquarius are considered semi-barren.

Behold - When two planets are within orb of an aspect, they are said to behold one another.

Beholding signs - Signs which have the same declination, or are at equal distances from the tropics, i.e., Aries and Virgo, Taurus and Leo, Gemini and Cancer, Libra and Pisces, Scorpio and Aquarius, and Sagittarius and Capricorn.

Benefic -Said of planets and aspects considered to be positive or helpful influences. Traditionally, Jupiter is the Greater Benefic and Venus is the Lesser Benefic; the Sun, Moon and Mercury are moderately benefic.

Benefic Aspects - Planetary relations which permit the unobstructed flow of the cosmic energy conducive to harmony.

Benefic planet : In horary these are traditionally Venus (the lesser benefic) and Jupiter (the greater benefic). In addition, the Part of Fortune and the Moon's North Node are considered benefic as well as several fixed stars, most notably Regulus and Spica.

Berossos - (280 B.C.) Babylonian. a priest of Baal. He founded a school of astrology on the Island of Cos.

Beseiged - Said of a planet placed between two malefics. Energies of a beseiged planet are thought to be restricted.

Bestial signs- Aries, Taurus, Leo and Capricorn; so designated because they are symbolized traditionally as animals. Also called quadrupedian (four-footed) and inarticulate (animals have voices but lack the power of speech).

Bhachakra - An imaginary belt around the ecliptic through which the planets traverse during their sojourn around the Sun. It represents a space approximately 90 above and 90 below the path of ecliptic on which all the planets, including the Sun, traverse.

Bhadrapada, Purva - The 25th asterism extending from 3200 00' to 3330 20' of the zodiac. It consists of 2 stars symbolizing a sword. The Vedic deity Aja Ekapada presides over it. Jupiter owns the asterism. Purva Bhadrapada imparts immensely active impulse: it radically affects the personal life of the individual concerned.

Bhadrayoga - One of the five combinations under Pancha Mahapurushayoga. Mercury in exaltation or in its own sign occupying a cardinal house either from ascendant or from the Moon produces Bhadrayoga. The combination produces gracious behavior. Another kind of Bhadrayoga is formed by the Moon and Jupiter placed in the 2nd house, the lord of the 2nd house in the 11th house, and the ascendant lord associated with benefices. The combination makes the person learned, intelligent, capable of understanding the feelings of others. He is skilled in many arts.

Bhaskara Yoga - A planetary combination formed by Mercury placed 2nd from Sun, Moon 11th from Mercury, and Jupiter in a trine house from the Moon. These conditions imply that Mercury is 2nd from Sun, Moon is 12th, and Jupiter is either in the 4th or the 8th house from Sun. A person born under this combination is courageous, powerful, learned, has deep knowledge of religious scriptures, mathematics and classical music.

Bhava Kundali - The horoscope in which planets are shown in different house divisions worked out on the basis of precise delineation of different bhavas, which are neither necessarily synchronous with zodiacal signs, nor of equal divisions.

Bhava Madhya - The mid-point of the extension of a house division.

Bhava Sandhi - The borderline between two house divisions. Planets situated at these points are considered ineffective.

Bhavat Bhavam - An important principle of predictive Vedic astrology. It suggests that the significance of a house is deciphered by the disposition of the same house relative to it. It implies that the significance of, for example, the 2nd house can be determined also by taking into account the 2nd house from the 2nd house, which will be the 3rd house in a natal chart.

Bhavya Yoga - A planetary combination formed by Moon in the 10th house, the navamsa lord of Moon in exaltation, and the lord of the 9th house associated with the lord of the 2nd house. This combination makes a person rich, respected and learned; he may be renowned as a botanist and a collec-tor of artifacts.

Bheri Yoga - The planetary combination which is formed in 3 ways: (i) all planets occupy the ascendant, in the 2nd, 7th, and 10th houses; (ii) Venus and the lord of ascendant are placed in a cardinal house from the ascendant, and the lord of the 9th house is strong. (iii) Venus and the lord of Ascendant and Jupiter are in mutual angles and the lord of the 9th house is strong. All these combinations make the individual learned in scientific subjects, practical in mundane affairs, and well provided with wealth and luxuries of life.

Bhogyamsa - Longitudinal distance traversed.

Bicorporeal signs -Gemini, Sagittarius and Pisces. Also called double-bodied and double signs, they are associated with twins and dual experiences.

Big Aspect : Any aspect between the slow moving planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Chiron, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto). These aspects are generally quite potent and influential, especially if they are multi-contact affairs. These energies often act on an unconscious level. Birth Chart (Chart or Chart wheel)-A 'map' detailing the positioning of the planets in the Signs at the specific moment of an individual's birth. The chart is rendered by using the individual's place, date and time of birth as the data source for this planetary snapshot.

Birth Moment - Generally accepted as the first breath taken after the cord has been cut as the person is no longer existing on the mothers blood supply.

Birth Place - Place where the native's first breath was drawn. Longitude and latitude of the birthplace are required to construct an accurate nativity.

Birth time - The moment of first breath of a new born.

Bitter Signs -Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Said to be hot, fiery and bitter.

Bi-septile - A minor hard aspect, separating distance roughly 103° (102° 51' 26"), based on the seventh harmonic (multiples of a septile, 51 1/7°, which is 1/7 of 360°.

Bi-quintile - A minor benefic aspect, separating distance 144°, based on the fifth harmonic (multiples of 72°, a quintile, which is 1/5 of 360°).

Bound : One of the dignities also known as terms, thought of as delimiting a certain circumstance within a certain confine of life. Often used in life expectancy calculations.

Bucket - The planetary arrangement formed by nine planets occupying approximately one-half of a horoscope with one planet roughly opposing the group that is a focal point of action (bucket handle) for planetary energies.

Bowl - One of the seven horoscope patterns wherein ll ten planets are placed in approximately one-half of a horoscope indicate the Bowl. Interpretation focuses on self-containment directed toward the area of horoscope placement.

Cadent - Also known as Apoklima. It I refers to the 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th houses in a natal chart related with spiritual quest.

Cadent house - Houses 3, 6, 9, and 12. "Falling away" from the angles.

Campanus - Thirteenth century astrologer and mathematician who devised the house system that bears his name, which divides the prime vertical into equal 30° arcs.

Cancer - The fourth sign of the zodiac. Cancer, the crab, is a cardinal, water sign. Ruled by the Moon, it is the exaltation of Jupiter.

Capricorn - The tenth sign of the zodiac. Capricorn, the sea-goat, is a cardinal, earth sign. Ruled by Saturn, it is the exaltation of Mars.

Caput Algol - The Gorgon's Head. A malefic fixed star, causing one to "lose one's head in the situation", located in Taurus 26°. Caput Draconis - The Dragon's Head (Moon's North Node).

Cardinal signs -Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn, which fall naturally at the cardinal points in a horoscope; east, north, west, and south, respectively, points indicated by the angles. Cardinal signs are associated naturally with the angular (cardinal) houses; the first, fourth, seventh, and tenth.

Cataclysmic planet- Uranus, which combines both magnetic and electric qualities and thus produces sudden upheavals.

Cauda draconis - Tail of the Dragon, or the Moon's South Node.

Cazimi - "In the heart of the Sun" - within 17 minutes of arc of the Sun's Ecliptic position and therefore corporally joined to the body of the Sun. The sun's radius on the Celestial Sphere was considered to be 17 minutes of arc. Traditionally a Cazimi planet is fortified.

Celestial - A heavenly body, such as a planet. Celestials are often considered to be beings rather than objects.

Celestial equator - The projection of the Earth's equator onto the Celestial Sphere in the same plane as the Earth's equator.

Celestial sphere- The imaginary sphere whose center is the center of the Earth and on which the fixed stars, planets, Sun, Moon, and the zodiac are located.

Ceres - The first asteroid to be discovered (1801), named after the Roman goddess of agriculture. Ceres is thought to indicate productive areas in a natal horoscope.

Chakra - Circle, disc-the perfect symbol of the cosmos. It refers to the natal chart depicting distribution of planets in different houses. In spiritual literature, chakras refer to the seven energy centers extending from the spinal cord to the astral body and to other invisible counterparts of the human aura.

Chakra Dasa - A method of calculating planetary ruler ship. If a person is born during daytime under this system, the sequence of ruler ship, is from the ascendant, if he is born in nighttime, it is from the Moon sign; if born in the afternoon, then from the 9th sign. The lords of these signs enjoy the ruler ship for 10 years which is followed by the lords of subsequent signs, the duration of each being ten years.

Chakrayoga - A planetary combination formed by Rahu in the 10th, house lord of the 10th house in ascendant, and ascendant lord in the 9th house. It makes the individual the administrator of a region after the age of twenty; he commands an army and is very respected.

Chaldean order of the planets : Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon. The first (geocentrically outermost) Chaldean planet, Saturn, is the "heaviest" or "slowest," and the 7th or last Chaldean "planet," the Moon, is the "lightest" or "swiftest."

Chaldeans - Ancient astrologers, originally based in Babylon, a city in Mesopotamia (Iraq), the birthplace of Western Astrology. Subsequently a term for astrologers in general.

Chamaryoga - A planetary combination in which the ascendant lord in exaltation is placed in a cardinal house expected by Jupiter. Alliteratively, if two benefices occupy the ascendant, the 7th, 9th or 10th houses, Chamar Yoga is formed. It makes the individual wise, philosophical and a good orator. Such an individual is generally born in a royal family.

Chandra - Moon; also known as Soma (a celestial drink, as well as a Vedic deity), Shita Rashmi (soothing rays), Abaja (born of water), Shitanshu (cool rays or cool lustre), Mriganka (eyes of a doe), and Klesha (anguish as well as worldly occupation).

Chandra-Ketu - A son of Rama's brother, Lakshamana, Chandra-Ketu (which means Moon and its south node) ruled over Chakora, a country in the Himalayan region.

Chandra Yoga - A planetary combination constituted by an exalted planet in ascendant expected by Mars, while the lord of the 9th house is placed in the 3rd house. It makes the individual administer, an adviser, or the commander of an army. The individual is courageous and lives for more than six decades.

Chandrika Yoga - A planetary combination in which the ascendant is occupied by the lord of the sign in which the 9th lord is also placed while Mars is posited in the 5th house. Persons born under it are powerful, attain a high social status in life but do not have male issues.

Chapa Yoga - It is a planetary combination in which all planets occupy the 10th to the 4th houses. Persons born under it are expert thieves, and are socially despised.Chapa Yoga is also formed if the Sun is in Aquarius, Mars in Aries, and Jupiter in its own sign, which makes the individual a globetrotter like a king.

Chart - A map of the heavens with emphasis on the Solar System. The modern Astrological Chart shows the Eastern horizon as the ascendant and the location of all the planets in relation to where the subject was born.

Chaturmukh Yoga - A planetary combination formed by Jupiter in a cardinal house from the sign occupied by the lord of the 9th house, Venus in a cardinal house in respect of the sign occupied by the lord of the 11th house, and the ascendant lord and the lord of the 10th house themselves placed in the cardinal houses. This combination makes the individual erudite and successful in his undertakings and much respected even among the Brahmins. He is well provided with material possessions and lives a very long life.

Chatursagar Yoga - An auspicious planetary combination formed by all planets, benefices as well as malefic, occupying cardinal houses. It bestows wealth, affluence, and high status in life. Such a person becomes famous and remains so long after his death.

Chaturthamsa - Fourfold division of a zodiacal sign, each consisting of 70 30'. The deities presiding over the four divisions are Sanak, Sanandan, Sanat, and Sanatan, respectively. The planetary ownership of these divisions belongs to the sign lord for the first division, the lord of the 4th sign from it rules over the second division, the lord of the 7th sign from it over the 3rd division, and the lord of the both sign over the 4th division.

Chaturvishamsa - Also known as Siddhamsa. It refers to the 1/24th division of a zodiacal sign.

Chhaya - The shadowy body of the wife of Sun, Sanjna, kept by her to attend to the needs of her husband while she herself was away on a visit to her father's place. From Chhaya were born Saturn, Savrni (a Manu), Tapti (a river), and Visthi (a son).

Chhdaka - Full Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, and Ketu are Chhadakas for the 2nd and 12th houses from them. Jupiter owning a malefic house and becoming a malefic to the native becomes a Chhadaka for only the 12th house; others thus placed are Chhadaka for the 2nd house only.

Chhatra Yoga - A planetary combination formed by all planets situated in the first seven houses of the chart. It makes the individual very happy from the beginning of his life till the very end.

Chiron - The most recently discovered asteroid of astrological interest, discovered by astronomer Charles Kowal, Hale Observatories, in 1977.

Chitra - The 14th asterism extending from 1730 20' to 1860 40' of the zodiac. It is ruled by Mars; its presiding deity is Tvastra, the celestial architect. Its primary motivation arises from Kama, desire; and its basic attribute is Tamas, inertia. It is classified a farmer by caste, a tiger by species, a demon by temperament, and a human by animal type. The asterism is concerned with west direction. It leads to involvement in Mayavic (illusory) existence, but for spiritually advanced individuals the asterism makes them highly creative, enabling them to produce original artifacts. The asterism is symbolised by a pearl.

Chitra Bhanu - The 16th in the cycle of 60 Samvawtsara (q.v.). It is ruled by Brahma. Birth during this year makes the individual brilliant, proud, devoted to gods; but he, sometimes, indulges in dishonourable activities.

Choleric - One of the four temperaments, associated with the element of fire. The choleric personality is believed to indicate an optimistic, youthful, impulsive temperament, prone to spontaneous outbursts of emotion. See also Melancholic, Phlegmatic and Sanguine.

Chrematistikos - From the Greek "chrematistikos", meaning profitable. In other words: a profitable place in which a planet can conduct affairs.

Chronocrator - Derived from the greek word "chronos", meaning "time" and "crator" meaning "lord", hence: time lord. It is a planet that has governance over an individuals life for a period of time on a given subject.

Circle of the Same- Refers to the motion of the celestial sphere caused by the daily rotation of the earth.

Circumambulation - A form of progression known as primary directions.

Climacterial periods - Years in life, which are multiples of seven or nine based on the Moon's progression and Saturn's transiting cycle. The progressed Moon squares its natal position approximately every seven years and trines it every nine. Transiting Saturn follows a similar cycle relative to its natal position. Thus, climacterial periods are ages seven, nine, fourteen, eighteen, etc.

Primary climacterial periods are the forty-ninth, sixty-third, and eighty-first years (doubly climacterial: 7 x 7, 7 x 9, 9 x 9).

Collection of Light - When a planet receives aspect from two others which are themselves not in aspect.

Combust - A planet is combust if it lies in the same sign as the Sun beyond the Sun's body (17') but within the moiety or half-orb (8.5 degrees ) of the Sun. Being combust burns up and thus weakens a planet. Traditionally the Moon is especially debilitated when combust.

Comet -A bright star-like heavenly body, composed of masses of tiny particles and gases, which follows an eccentric orbit of the Sun that for some comets can take thousands of years to complete. Most comets form luminous "tails", bits of meteroic material and gases that stream off into space, when they near the Sun.

Commanding signs - Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo - considered more powerful than the other six signs because they are nearer the Zenith. Also called Northern Signs, they have power over the Southern Signs. Presumably, when the observer is south of the Equator, the northern signs would obey and the southern signs command.

Common signs - The Mutable signs.

Composite chart - A single horoscope made up from two or more natal charts by averaging house cusps and planetary positions of the natal charts. A composite chart gives insight into the relationship that exists between the persons whose natal charts are combined.

Concordant in Itinerary - Signs ruled by the same planetary ruler (such as Gemini and Virgo, both ruled by Mercury).

Configuration-An aspect involving three or more planets.

Conjunction -The aspect formed when two planets occupy position close together in the zodiac.

Consideration before judgement - A condition in a horary chart that cautions against reading the chart because it might not be radical or fit to judge. Traditional astrologers sometimes refused to read a chart if a consideration before judgment appeared.

Con-significators - A sign or planet believed to have an affinity with a mundane house because it falls in the same numerical order as the house. For example, Aries is the con-significator of the 1st house, Taurus of the 2nd, etc.

Constellation -A group of fixed stars usually within 8° orb; the first harmonic.

Contraiety of planets - Contrariety happens, when a weighty planet is placed in the midst, between two light planets, the first applying unto the weighty planet, and the third being retrograde, joined himself to the second, and after to the first.

Contrantiscion - Also called contrascion. The contrascion of a planet is that point at the same distance from but on the opposite side of the equinoctial axis, 0 degrees Aries - 0 degrees Libra. The midpoints of a planet and its contrascion are always 0 degrees Aries and 0 degrees Libra. The contrascion of a planet is always opposite its antiscion.

Contraparallel - There can be Contraparallels of Latitude (when two planets have equal but opposite latitudes measured north and south of the Ecliptic) and Contraparallels of Declination (when two planets have equal but opposite declinations measured north and south of the Celestial Equator).

Contrascion - The point lying equidistant from and at the opposite side of the equinoctial axis to a planet.

Converse - Measurements, which follow the reverse order of the natural zodiac, used primarily to direct or progress a horoscope backward in time.

Copernicus - An astronomer born in Polish Prussia credited with developing the theory (sixteenth century) that Earth is a moving planet that revolves around the Sun, a contradiction to Ptolemy's theory (second century) that the Earth is the center of the universe and fixed in space.

Cor Leonis - The Lion's Heart. The most royal of the four Royal Stars, aka Regulus.

Co-ruler - Prior to the discovery of Uranus, the Sun and Moon were believed to rule one sign each and the other five planets then known to humankind (Mercury through Saturn) to rule two signs each. When the three outermost planets were discovered, they became co-rulers of the signs Aquarius (Uranus), Pisces (Neptune) and Scorpio (Pluto), along with the traditional rulers, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars respectively.

Corporeal Conjunction - When two planets are conjunct in the same sign. Stronger than an "out-of-sign" conjunction.

Corresponding in Course- Signs of equal power, ie when in equal ascension, or the signs that reflect each other's declension, sharing the same number of hours of daylight and of night. Signs being the same distance on either side of the solstice.

Cosmecology - The science that considers Earth in its relationship to celestial phenomena.

Cosmic Astrology - Sidereal astrology. Its zodiacal signs are fixed stellar constellations. It establishes relationships between our solar system, the fixed stars and the galaxy. Cosmic astrology possesses very accurate predictive base and provides a sound basis for spiritual astrology.

Cosmic cross - An old term for a T-square, sometimes applied to a grand square.

Cosmobiology - an astrological system developed by Reinhold Ebertin that emphasized midpoints and the following hard aspects: semi-square, square, sesquiquadrate and opposition.

Cosmology - A theory of the origin and development of the universe. Cosmology deals with the philosophy of the origin and general structure of the universe with its parts, elements, laws, and such of its characteristics as space, time, causality and freedom. It forms a branch of astronomy that deals with the general structure and evolution of the universe.

Co-significator - Any planet which is naturally associated with another in the rulership of a faculty or matter under consideration.

Critical days- Those days on which the Moon makes successive 45 degrees transiting aspects to its original position in a chart for an illness or event. Such days are stressful crisis points for the illness or event. Favorable crises occur when the Moon makes successive 60 degrees aspects to its radical position.

Critical degree - A planet's strength in the chart is increased when in any of these degrees, or within an orb of 3 degrees of the critical degree.

Culmination - The arrival of a planet at the degree of the MC. The culmination of an aspect is when it is completed, regardless of the MC.

Cupido - The first symbolic planet used in Uranian astrology.

Cusp, cusp line -The line that separates the house and indicates the beginning of a house.

Cycle -A planet's zodiacal period; the time it takes a planet to make one complete transit of a horoscope.

Dakshinamurti - An aspect of Shiva. A mystic functionary situated, according to legends, around the Tropic of Capricorn, and guiding the influx of spiritual forces to earth. The nodes of Moon are said to be intimately connected with him.

Dakshinayana - The beginning of the southward sojourn of Sun after the summer solstice.

Danda Yoga - An auspicious planetary combination formed in several ways. If Venus aspects Jupiter placed in the 3rd house, while the lord of the 3rd is in exaltation, Danda Yoga is formed.

Dasa Chhtdra - The last portion of a planetary ruler ship. This duration is often inauspicious.

Dasamamsa - One-tenth division of a zodiacal sign. Each of it consists of 30 with different planets ruling and different Vedic deities presiding.

Data Yoga - A planetary combination formed by Jupiter in ascendant, Venus in 4th house, Mercury in the 7th, and Mars in the 10th house. It makes an individual very affluent and generous.

Debilitation - Also known as Neecha. It represents the weakest position of a planet. At this position the auspicious effects of the planet are eliminated unless cancelled by Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga. The planets are debilitated as follows: Sun in Libra, 100; Moon in Scorpio, 30 Mars in Cancer, 280 Mercury in Pisces, 150; Jupiter in Capricorn, 50; and Venus in Virgo, 270; and Saturn in Aries, 200. Debilitation of a planet occurs 1800 away from its exaltation point.

Debility - A weak or afflicted condition of a planet. Being in Detriment or in Fall are potent essential debilities.

Decanate - The partitioning of each Sign into three equal parts of 10 degrees each. Each part is known as a decanate. Every Sign is composed of 30 degrees.

Decennia - One of the Greek time lord systems based upon the minor periods of the planets, counted in months: Saturn 30, Jupiter 12, Mars 15, Sun 19, Venus 8, Mercury 20, Moon 25.

Decile - Minor aspect of 36°. Considered fortunate, also known as semi-quintile.

Declination - The arc of measurement in degrees north or south of the celestial equator.

Decreasing in light - Waning. Usually said of the Moon as it approaches the Sun in the order of the signs on its way to a conjunction (New Moon) after leaving its opposition (Full Moon). When decreasing in light, the Moon forms a series of sinister aspects to the Sun.

Decumbiture - A lying down due to illness. A chart cast for the time a person first becomes ill or takes to the sickbed. Horary rules are used to interpret a decumbiture chart. The Ascendant signifies the sick person.

Deeptamsa - Range of an expecting planet; the focal point of an expecting planet; the orb within which the aspect of a planet can be effective.

Degree-A degree is 1/360 of a circle. In Astrology, degrees are the commonly-used unit of measurement.

Deham - A term used in Kala Chakra Dasa. If differs for different quarters of an asterism.

Depression - Another name for fall. One of the essential debilities.

Descendant-The opposite point from the ascendant, located on the cusp of the Seventh House. This point explains the nature of our interactions with others.

Descending - Planets appear to be descending between the tenth house cusp via the descendant and that of the fourth, when they begin to ascend. Descending planets are considered weaker than ascending ones.

Destroyer - That planet in a primary or other direction that brings life to an end by making a malefic contact with the apheta.

Detriment - A planet is weaker and in its detriment when it is in the sign opposing that which it rules.

Devarishis - Also known as Devarshis. The sages of the highest order. They dwell in the region of gods.

Devendra Yoga - A planetary combination formed by ascendant placed in a fixed sign, ascendant lord in 11th, the lord of 11th in ascendant, and the lords of 2nd and 10th houses in mutual exchange. This combination is powerful in making the individual extremely beautiful , loved by pretty women, owner of vast wealth and villas. He attains a very high social status.

Dhana Karaka - The planet producing wealth, viz., Jupiter.

Dhanayogas - Planetary combinations for wealth.

Dignity - The sign that a planet rules naturally is its sign of dignity. A planet is essentially dignified when it occupies its natural sign of dignity or its sign of exaltation; it is accidentally dignified when placed in its natural house. It is in domal dignity when in its own sign.

Direct motion - Movement of a planet in the order of the zodiac signs from Aries to Taurus to Gemini, etc. Retrograde motion is opposite to direct motion.

Directions - A term synonymous with progression.

Directions by house - The houses are assigned compass directions with the Ascendant pointing East; the Descendant, West; and in the northern hemisphere above the Tropic of Cancer, the IC, North (away from the Ecliptic or path of the Sun); and the MC, South (toward the Ecliptic).

Direct Station - The point in a planet's retrograde cycle when it is standing still , preparing to change from retrograde motion to direct motion. Coming at the end of a retrograde cycle, it often indicates a situation that has been stagnant or "stuck" for awhile, reached a crisis point, and is now beginning to resolve.

Disjunct - Another name for the quincunx aspect.

Dispositor - The planet that rules the sign or dignity another planet occupies. For example, if Mars is in Libra, the dispositor of Mars is Venus.

Dissociate aspect - An aspect within orb but out of sign. Dissociation disperses and thus weakens the strength or focus of an aspect.

Distributor - The planet that is the current bound lord in a circumambulation.

Diurnal - From the Latin diurnus, daily. Refers to the southern (upper) hemisphere of a horoscope, the "day" section of a horoscope, that part of the heavens that appears above the Earth's horizon.

Diurnal arc - The time expressed in right ascension that it takes a planet or degree of the zodiac to move from its rising point on the horizon to its setting point.

Diurnal planets - Saturn, Jupiter, Sun.

Diurnal signs - Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces, signs whose natural positions are in the diurnal or southern hemisphere of a horoscope.

Dodekatamoria - Also known as "twelfth part". This is the division of a sign into 13 equal sections, based upon the Moon's monthly cycle against the background stars.

Domal Dignity - A planet in its own sign.

Domicile - A zodiac sign where the planet is most comfortable and therefore has authority.

Double-bodied Signs- Gemini is known as one of the double-bodied signs (dual signs) because it has two "bodies" in its symbol, the symbol of the Twins. The other dual signs are Sagittarius (part man, part beast) and Pisces (two fishes).

Draconic Chart - The natal Dragon's Head (ascending node) becomes 0-degrees Aries of the Draconic chart, or 'draconic equinox' and other planets and points are adjusted accordingly.

Dragon's Head - Caput Draconis, or Moon's North Node. The sign and degree occupied by the moon when crossing the ecliptic from south to north lattitude. It is usually considered somewhat benefic, and is the opposite of the Dragon's Tail (Cauda Draconis), the South Node, which is considered malefic. In Indian astrology, the Dragon's Head is called Rahu and the Dragon's Tail is called Ketu and both are considered malefic, though less so for ketu.

Dragon's Tail - Cauda Draconis, or Moon's South Node.

Duad, dwadasama, dwadachamsha - A twelve-fold subdivision of the signs(each composed of 2 1/2°) developed by Hindu astrologers. The first duad of each sign is sub-ruled by the natural planetary ruler of the sign; the second duad is sub-ruled by the ruler of next sign in the zodiac and so on. These "signs

within a sign," by virtue of their planetary rulers, account for subtle shadings of expression found in different degrees of the same sign.

Dual Signs - Gemini; Sagittarius; Pisces.

Dwadishamsha - Division in Indian Astrology of the zodiac into segments of two and a half degrees. Popularised in the modern era in the West by Alan Leo, this division was also used by the ancient Greeks, in the dodecatmoria.

Earth - Sometimes called Terra. Our planet revolves on its own axis every 24 hours and completes its orbit around the Sun in around 365.25 days. The course of the Earth's orbit lies between that of Venus and Mars. The Moon is the Earth's natural satellite and orbits the Earth in approximately 29 days.

Earth Element - One of the four astrological elements. A feminine element, it stands for materiality, solidity, matters to do with security and so on. The other elements are, Fire, Air and Water.

Earth Signs-Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Signs belonging to this Element represent a practical nature such as stability, solidarity and practicality.

Easaraph - A term used in Horary Astrology. It refers to a planetary combination involving two swift moving planets in which the fast moving one has overtaken the slow moving one. If the forward planet is a benefic, final success, or fruition of the action is likely a malefic overtaking. A benefic will frustrate the efforts of the individual. If both the planets are malefic, the result will be inauspicious.

Easter - Christian festival of Christ's resurrection, coinciding approximately with the first full moon after the vernal equinox.

East points : The point on the Celestial Equator rising on the Eastern Horizon at birth. The East Point is the intersection of the Eastern Horizon, Prime Vertical, and Celestial Equator. The Ascendant is the intersection of the Eastern Horizon with the Ecliptic.

Ecliptic - The apparent path of the Sun on the Celestial Sphere in Earth centered astronomy. The Ecliptic is inclined at 23.5 degrees to the Celestial Equator.

Eclipse -An occultation, commonly used in reference to a darkening of the Sun or Moon. Solar eclipses occur at the times of those new Moons when the Moon, Sun and Earth are aligned so that the Moon blocks the Sun (totally or partially) from Earth's view. Lunar eclipses occur at certain full Moons during which the Sun, Earth and Moon are so aligned that Earth blocks the Sun's light from the Moon, and the Moon is invisible to earthlings.

Eighth House-Also known as the House of Sex. It describes shared resources, inheritance, alimony, taxes and surgery. It is also the House of regeneration, death and rebirth.

Ekawali Yoga - The planetary combination in which all planets occupy different houses in a sequential manner. It makes the individual an emperor.

Election - Chart cast to ascertain the most auspicious time for important events, such as marriages, moving house and so on. Used in Horary Astrology.

Electional astrology- A system by which one determines the most advantageous time to carry out a specific action (marriage, travel, business) by first erecting a suitable horoscope and working "backward" to calculate the time that is appropriate to the chosen horoscope.

Electional chart - A horoscope chart cast to determine the best time to take action. Electional astrology is the reverse application of horary procedures.

Elements -Ancients believed that the universe consisted of four primary elements, air, earth, fire and water from which the triplicities , a four-fold division of the zodiac, are derived. Signs belonging to the same triplicity exhibit similar qualities symbolized by the element with which they are associated.

Elevated planet -A planet placed high in a horoscope. The most elevated is the planet closest to the Midheaven; it is considered strong by position and accidentally dignified.

Eleventh House - The eleventh chart segment. Governs friendships, hopes and wishes, personal goals, associations, group aspirations, cooperation, bettering the community and humanitarianism.

Elongation - The distance of a planet from the Sun, as viewed from Earth. The maximum elongation for the inferior planets is 28° for Mercury, and 48° for Venus.

Embolism lunation - The Moon's position when the natal lunar phase angle (relative position between Moon and sun in a natal horoscope) is repeated. It is believed that women can conceive during the time each month that the natal lunar phase angle recurs.

Emersion - A planet coming from under the Sun's beams so as to be seen after an eclipse or occultation.

Enthroned - A planet placed in its domicile, or home sign.

Emplacement - Emplacement horaries depend on the house position of the significators to answer the question.

Ephemeris (ephemerides) -An almanac that lists the zodiacal positions of the planets and other astronomical data.

Equal House horoscope -One in which twelve equal houses are derived by taking successive arcs of 30° each, beginning with the Ascendant and completing the zodiac circle.

Equation of Time - The difference between true and mean time at any given moment. This difference arises due to Sun not always crossing the Meridian at 12 o' clock. The time by watch is regulated by mean solar time, which is constant in length, and is equal to the annual mean of the true solar days.

Equator -The plane perpendicular to Earth's polar axis, which divides Earth into two hemispheres, north and south. The extension of this plane into space forms the celestial equator.

Equatorial arcs - A method of progressing house cusps, based upon the Earth's rotation, in which one year of life corresponds to the passage of 1° right ascension over the meridian, approximately four minutes of time.

Equinoctial Point - the points of intersection of the celestial equator and the ecliptic. Each point refers to the Sun's crossing of the celestial equator, and is known as Equinox.

Equinoctial Signs - Aries and Libra. These signs hold the vernal and autumnal equinoxes.

Equinox -this occurs when the center of the Sun is directly over Earth's equator. The Sun crosses the equator twice each year, once at the vernal equinox when it enters 0° Aries and again at the autumnal

equinox when it enters 0° Libra. The days and nights are of equal duration all over the world on equinoctial dates. The vernal equinox occurs on the first day of spring, the autumnal equinox on the first day of autumn.

Esoteric astrology - A study that deals with the human spirit and hidden nature as opposed to exoteric astrology, which deals with human characteristics and life on Earth.

Essential diginity - A region of the zodiac where a planet has a special affinity and is therefore more powerful. Essential dignity can occur by ruling sign, exaltation, triplicity, term, or face.

Event chart -A horoscope drawn up according to the date, time and location of a particular happening, interpreted to gain insight into influences surrounding the event and an outlook for possible developments stemming from that event.

Exaltation - Essential dignity of a planet, possibly even more powerful than being in its own sign.

Exoteric astrology - any branch of astrology that studies observable events and characteristics such as natal astrology, mundane astrology, etc., as distinguished from esoteric astrology, which studies the unknown or occult aspects of humanity.

Extra-Saturnian planets - The three planets not visible to the naked eye that orbit outside the planet Sauturn, namely: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Face- The weakest form of essential dignity. Each sign is divided into three 10 degrees faces, and a different planet has dignity in each face of the sign.

Fall - A sign opposite the one in which a planet is exalted. A significator in its fall may indicate an unfortunate, helpless, insolvent, or cruel person. A planet in its fall may literally refer to a person who has fallen, been disgraced, or suffered some kind of limitation.

Falling amiss - A planet falls amiss when it is in one of the unfavorable houses (2nd, 6th, 8th and 12th) or is unfamiliarly configured to it's own domicile. It is closely connected with the word achrematistikos because a planet that falls amiss is unprofitable and slack in activity.

Familiarity - Any kind of aspect or reception between two planets.

Feminine planets - Traditionally the Moon and Venus. In addition, Mercury is feminine when joined with a feminine planet and masculine when joined with a masculine planet.

Feminine Signs-The Earth and Water Signs, comprised of Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces. Indicates passive and receptive energy.

Feral signs - Ferall signs are Leo and the last part of Sagittarius.

Fertility - A classification of the signs based on their susposed productivity. Fertile signs, Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces are said to be good for planting when occupied by the Moon, and are indicators of offspring when occupying the cusps of the fifth or eleventh houses. Semi-fertile or moderately fruitful signs are Taurus, Libra, and Capricorn. Barren or sterile are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. The barren signs are good for cultivation when occupied by the Moon, and are indicators of not having children when occupying the cusps of the fifth or eleventh houses.

Fiery Element - One of the four astrological elements. A masculine element, it stands for action, positivity, matters to do with spirituality and so on. The other elements are Water, Air and Earth.

Fiery Signs - Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are fiery signs. Sun and Mars are fiery planets. They show courage, strength, determination, aggression and confidence in oneself.

Fifth House-Also known as the House of Pleasure. It describes romance, creativity, children, fun and speculation. It also rules the dramatic and one's artistic ability.

Figure - Another name for aspect, or depending upon the context, the birth chart itself.

Finger of God - Also called the Finger of Fate or Yod. Comprises two planets in sextile (60°) aspect to each other, each making a 150° aspect focused on the same third planet. Indicative of a special life purpose, it creates the sensation of steadiness, special passion, deep aspiration and a strong inner drive to accomplish something very important and special.

Firdar - A general time lord system, probably Persian in origin and based upon sect similar to the decennia. .

Fire Signs-Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Signs belonging to this Element represent a fiery nature.

First House-Also known as the House of Self. It describes the outer personality. It is the image we project to the world, our mask.

Fixed - The signs of the quadruplicity: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius.

Fixed Houses - 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th houses.

Fixed Signs-Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. This Quality represents stubbornness and inflexibility.

Fixed stars - These do not move across the ecliptic, as do planets. Those near the ecliptic and of significant magnitude have considerable influence. Fixed stars do not lie within the zodiac; they are all beyond it in the constellations.

Fixity - One of the three modalities which finds expression through the signs Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. These signs share a common dynamic, namely that of blocking action, maintaining status quo and they provide stability.

Flat chart - Alternate term for natural chart.

Focal point - Any point in a horoscope where several influences converge or disperse, such as the position of the squared planet in a T-square formation, the action point in a yod, the handle of a bucket, etc. See also T-square.

Fomalhaut - A malefic Fixed Star in the 4th degree of Pisces. One of the four Royal Stars.

Forecast - Plotting the movements of the planets to determine upcoming trends.

Fortuna Chart - Chart constructed using the degree of the Part of Fortune as the ascendant.

Fortunes - Another term for the benefic planets.

Fourth House - Also known as the House of Home. It describes the residence, real estate, ancestry and the past. It is also speaks about parental influence.

Fruitful Signs - Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces.

Frustration - When a planet applying to an aspect is deflected by a third before the aspect is complete, it is described as having been frustrated. Used in Horary Astrology.

Full Moon - That point in the lunar cycle when the Moon exactly opposes the Sun; begins the waning phase.

Gada Yoga- A planetary combination formed in two ways: Moon posited in 2nd house along with Jupiter and Venus, or the lord of 9th house additionally aspects them; and (ii) all planets, excluding the nodes are posited in adjoining cardinal houses. Gada Yoga makes the individual engaged in philanthropic and religious activities but fierce in appearance and free from any enemy. He earns much money. He is also happily married.

Gaja Yoga - A planetary combination in which the lord of the 7th house from ascendant, which would be 9th from the 11th house, is in the 11th house along with Moon, and the lord of the 11th house aspects them. A person born under this combination is always happy, rich, religious, and lives in luxurious style.

Gaja Kesari Yoga - An auspicious planetary combination formed by certain relationships between Moon and Jupiter. Gaja Kesari-yoga is both protective from evil consequences of other maleficent as well as productive of auspicious results.

Galactic Centre - The centre of our Galaxy, the Milky Way, currently located at Sag 26°54'.It has a significant effect when aspected, inclining people to take a central role in affairs and to have a sense of cosmic destiny.

Gandanta - The conjunction of Pisces and Aries, Cancer and Leo, and Scorpio and Sagittarius.

Gemini - The third sign of the zodiac. Mutable and airy. Ruled by Mercury. Emblem: The Twins.

Genethlialogy - The study of Birth Charts in Natal Astrology.

Genethliacal - Pertaining to Birth Charts in Natal Astrology.

Geniture - The Birth Chart.

Geocentric - The Earth as the centre of observation and influence. Astrological aspects are geocentric, as they relate to the Earth.

Geocentric System - The conception of the universe with Earth as its center. It is the system based on the pre-Galilean view of the stellar world. This unrealistic view is opposed to the Heliocentric System The present day Ephemeris's provide coordinates of stellar relationships as seen from Earth.

Ghatika Lagna - The Ascendant in the Indian system of horoscopy which is expressed in relation with the daily sunrise and sunset time described in traditional time counts such as ghati, pala, etc.

Glyph - A symbol for refering to a planet, zodiac sign, aspect or other astrological concept.

Gochara - the transit or passage of a planet in relation with other planets during the course of their usual movement. At any moment of time, a planet's position is different from its natal position. This divergence requires to be taken into consideration for astrological predictions.

Golden Linkage - One of 5 linkages most favorable to have with anyone in terms of achieving success together.

Go-Yoga - The planetary combination formed by exaltation of the lord of the ascendant, and strong Jupiter placed in its Mool Trikona in association with the lord of the 2nd house. It makes the individual hail from an elite family and bestows upon him happiness, attractive appearance, and high social standing.

Graha - Planets.

Graha, Poura - The nature of planets when they are in opposition to another planet.

Grand Cross-A configuration in which four planets form mutual squares. It creates much tension.

Grand Hexagram - A group of 6 or more planets that lie 60 degrees apart in a 6 pointed star pattern. Very dynamic and full of great opportunity, if you are willing to put in the needed effort and can handle this higher volatile energy.

Grand Trine-When three planets, generally of the same Element, meet each other to form a triangle. The energy of this configuration is harmonious.

Grand Quintile - A very rare pattern of 5 or more planets separted by 72 degree aspects (quintiles) that lie in a 5 pointed star design.

Greater Benefic - A term reserved for the planet Jupiter.

Greater Malefic - A term applied to Saturn.

Great Year -The astrological year based on the time it takes Earth's axis to complete on revolution around the pole of the ecliptic, about twenty-five thousand years. A Great Year is divided into twelve "months" of about two thousand years duration.

Gregorian calendar- The calendar now used internationally, devised by Pope Gregory in the 1580s to replace the Julian calendar.

Guru -Chandala Yoga - A planetary combination relating Jupiter and Rahu. When these two planets are associated together in a house, it produces inauspicious results. It makes the individual depraved and inclined to indulge in socially and morally unethical activities.

Hades - The second symbolic planet used in Uranian astrology.

Hala -Yoga - It arises when all the planets are located in a group of triangular houses other than the ascendant. It will lead to all planets occupying the following three formations: (i) 2nd, 6th, and 10th houses; (ii) 3rd, 7th, and 11th houses; and (iii) 4th, 8th, and 12th houses. Persons born under this combination are engaged in agricultural activities in an important way.

Halley's Comet - Named for the English astronomer, Edmund Halley. One of the most brilliant comets viewed from Earth, it reappears approximately every seventy-seven years.

Half-sum - an alternate term for mid-point, the point in the zodiac that lies exactly midway between two planets.

Hamsa -Yoga - One of the five Maha Purusha Yogas formed by Jupiter in exaltation or in its own sign and in strength occupying a cardinal house either from ascendant or from the Moon sign. It makes the person fortunate, well built. He gets a beautiful wife and possesses all comfort. He is religiously inclined and favourably disposed towards spiritual studies. The combination is said to bestow a life of more than 82 years.

Hard Aspect - Aspects which create tension and friction. Squares, oppositions and quincunxes are all hard aspects.

Harihara Brahma Yoga - Refers to 3 sets of planetary combinations: (i) Benefics placed in the 2nd, 8th, and 12th houses from the sign in which the lord of the 2nd house is placed; (ii) Jupiter, Moon, and Mercury posited in the 4th, 9th, and 8th houses from the sign where the lord of the 7th house is situated; and (iii) the Sun, Venus and Mars in the 4th, 10th, or 11 house from the ascendant lord. These combinations make the individual truthful, effective speaker, victorious, well-versed in religious scriptures, and philanthropic.

Harmonics - The term for the Aspects describing the relationship between two points, bodies or Signs.

Harmonious aspect - Aspects in which the planets involved are mutually supportive; their energies operate together comfortably and productively. The sextile and trine are major harmonious aspects; also called easy aspects.

Harmonic Chart - Chart based on any chosen division of the zodiac. For example, the fourth harmonic features planets in square aspect. In the harmonic chart, these planets are shown in conjunction.

Hayz - A very powerful form of accidental dignity, based on sect, planetary joy, being above the horizon etc. Hardly used in modern astrology.

Heavy planets - A term used to refer to the slower-moving whose influece is considered more serious than the other planets. They are: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Heimarmene - One of the three fates referred to by the ancient Greeks, also known as immutable fate.

Heliacal rising - "Rising with the Sun" - occurs when a planet or star, which was hidden by the Sun's rays, again becomes visible.

Heliocentric - Measurements based upon the Sun as the central point of reference or observation; Sun-centered.

Heliocentric System - The system in which cosmographic coordinates are given on the assumption that the Sun is at its center. It is a realistic approach.

Hermes - One of the Greek gods, has references to the planet Mercury.

Herschel - The original name for the planet Uranus, which was discovered in 1781 by the British astronomer Sir William Herschel.

Higher Octave planets - The three outermost planets, which symbolize the higher or spiritual level of expression in contrast to the lower or physical level symbolized by the inner planets with which they are linked. Uranus, the higher octave of Mercury, objective intellectualism. Neptune, linked to Venus, expresses spiritual love; Pluto, the higher octave of Mars, is associated with spiritual evolvement; Mars with physical development.

Holistic - That which seeks to take the whole body, soul and mind into consideration in any prognosis or interpretation.

Hora - The rising of a radical sign; an hour; it represents a part of the zodiacal sign divided into two parts, each of which is owned by Sun or Moon. Sun's Hora is considered masculine and Moon's Hora is feminine.

Hora Lagna - A sort of ascendant worked out by multiplying the birth time after sunrise by two and dividing the product by five, and adding the result to the sunrise on the day.

Hora Shastra - A treatise on predictive astrology, but generally it refers to the science of astronomy and astrology both.

Hindrance - Any condition that hinders or impedes the functioning of a significator.

Historic Aspect - An aspect that occurs in the chart of an event, as opposed to a living being.

Horary astrology - The branch of astrology devoted to answering specific question by means of a horoscope drawn up for the time a question is asked.

Horizon, Celestial - Extension of earthly horizon to space. Astronomically, horizon refers to the small circle of the celestial sphere whose plane is tangent to the earth at the position of a given observer or the plane of such a circle which is also known as the Sensible Horizon.

Horoscope - It literally means a map of the heavens at the time of one's birth.

Horoscope of Solar Ingress - Planetary positions along with the ascendant and other horoscopes details for the moment when the Sun during its annual sojourn returns to its exact zodiacal position as at birth. This chart is used as an aid for annual forecasting.

Horoskopos - Ancient Hellenistic term for Ascendant

Horizon -The visible juncture of Earth and the sky, represented in a horoscope by the Ascendant-Descendant axis.

Hours, Planetary - The hours of the day are ruled by planets in their order from Saturn inward to the Moon.

House- One of the twelve mathematically derived sections (houses) of a horoscope, each of which represents a particular area of life. The size of a house and the zodiacal degree that appears on its cusp depend upon the house system used.

House cusp- The zodiacal degree at which a house begins.

Human signs - Signs that exhibit human qualities : Gemini, Virgo, the first 15° of Sagittarius and Aquarius.

Humanistic astrology - Person-centered astrology as opposed to event-oriented.

Humours - Traditional functions of the body, first expounded in ancient Greece by Galen: sanguine (blood), phlegmatic (phlegm), melancholic (black bile) and choleric (yellow bile). When these four humours are in balance, the body is in a state of health, when they are in imbalance there is disease.

They are related to the Elements in Astrology: fire (choleric); water (phlegmatic), air (sanguine) and earth (melancholic).

Hurling rays- Refers to aspects cast backward in the order of the signs. May imply that the planet casting the ray is somehow hindering the receiving planet.

Hyleg - Interchangeable with Apheta.

Ichchita Mrityu Yoga - The planetary combination formed by Mars in a cardinal house and Rahu in the 7th. It leads the individual to self-destruction.

I-Ching - The I-Ching, or "Book of Changes," is an ancient Chinese oracle book that deals with philosophy and divination.

Ikkbala Yoga - A term used in annual forecasting. It is formed by all the planets placed in Panphara houses. It produces many desired events during the year.

Immersion - The beginning of an eclipse, or of an occultation. The opposite of Emersion, or coming out of the aspect.

Impedited - A planet is impeded in its natural action when afflicted, especially by malefics.

Imum Coeli ( I.C.)-One of the four major angles of a birth chart; this one falls at the bottom of the chart wheel. It is the start of the Fourth House and is one of the most personal points of the chart.

Impedition - Any factor that weakens a significator. Badly aspected, especially by malefics. Affliction. Hindrance.

Inarticulate signs - Aries, Taurus, Leo and Capricorn, signs pictured as animals that have voices but lack the power of speech, symbolizing an inability to communicate.

Inconjunct - Quincunx. An aspect of 150°, creating stress, unhappiness and sorrow. The aspect has a 6th or 8th house effect, depending on whether the swifter planet is applying or separating from the opposition to the slower.

Increasing in Light - A planet increases in light as it progresses from the conjunction with the Sun to the opposition.

Increasing in Motion - A planet moving faster than on the previous day.

Indrachapa - An invisible Upagraha, satellite, of Venus. Its other names are Kodanda and Karmuka.

Induvara Yoga - An inauspicious planetary combination. It is studied primarily in Tajaka astrology. The seven planets in a progressed horoscope based on solar ingress principle, situated in Apoklima houses produce obstacles and thereby nullify the fructification of an auspicious combination that may otherwise be present.

Inferior Planets - Planets orbiting between the Earth and the Sun (Moon, Mercury and Venus and the postulated Vulcan). The orbits of the superior planets, Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars lie beyond that of the Earth from the Sun.

Infortunes - Uranus, Saturn and Mars. Mercury and Neptune when afflicted.

Ingress - Entry of a planet into a sign. Usually the Sun's ingress into the four cardinal signs.

Inner Planets - The faster moving planets that are in the inner part of the solar system. Includes the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars; usually the Moon is included. These planets generally indicate parts of the personality that are well-known to the ego and relate to everyday behavior patterns. Also known as personal planets.

Inter-aspect - An aspect that is formed between 2 charts as opposed to 1. An interaspect is the result of any alignment of 2 natal planets where 2 persons each contribute 1 natal planet, and the 2 planets are at an aspect angle to each other.

Intercepted - When a sign is fully enclosed between the cusps of a house without actually being on either cusp it is described as being intercepted. This only appears in charts; signs are never intercepted in the zodiac.

Interconnected Magi Quads - One of the most powerful planetary alignments, it consists of 6 planets, which are broken down into 3 pairings. Each of the 3 pairings are aligned in such a way that each pairing quadralizes to both of the other pairings to form a Magi Quad, thereby forming a total of 3 Magi Quads, each of which shares a pairing with one of the other M/Qs.

In its own light - A planet is said to be in its own light when it is in the corresponding hemisphere of the light of the time acording to its sect membership. To determine if a planet is in it's own light, first determine the sect of the chart. If diurnal then the daylight of the Sun is above the horizon and the Moon's light is below . If it is a nocturnal chart then the Moons light is above the horizon and the Suns is below

Ishtha - The desired object. Ishtha Kala is the time of an epoch. It is measured in terms of time elapsed from the moment of sunrise to the moment of the occurrence of the event.

Ishwara - God; the Almighty God; the presiding deity of a manifested solar system.

Ithasala Yoga - Also known as Muthashila Yoga. A planetary combination considered in connection with annual forecasting . It is based on the relative motion of different planets.When two planets are related in such a way in a house that the slow moving planet is ahead of the fast moving one, Ithasala Yoga is formed. This formation is effective only when both the planets are within their the orb. In this situation, the fast-moving planet transfers its influence to the slow-moving planet.

Jagadamba - Mother of the world; one of the names of Shiva's consort. Among the zodiacal signs, Virgo generally stands for Jagadamba, especially in the sense of sacrificing oneself for the welfare of others.

Janma, Anujanma and Trijanma - These terms are shortened expressions to describe the planets occupying the Moon sign (janma), the 5th from the Moon sign (Anujanma), and the 9th from the Moon sign (Trijanma).

Jnana - Knowledge; sacred knowledge, especially derived from meditation.Saturn and Ketu lead to the realization of spiritual truths and understanding of deeper cosmic laws.

Judicial Astrology - Relates to the forecasting of principal events which will befall a country and public conditions which will prevail.

Juno - The queen of the gods. An asteroid seen by modern astrologers as significant.

Jupiter-Represents luck, philosophy, religion, higher learning, ethical values, expansion, abundance and excesses. It also rules long distance travel, aspirations and judgment.

Jyeshtha - The 18th asterism extending from 2260 40' to 2400 00' of the zodiac. It consists of three stars symbolizing an earring. It is ruled by Mercury and is presided by Indra, the king of gods in the celestial world.

Jyotish - Indian (Vedic) astrology. This is based on the sidereal zodiac, as opposed to the tropical zodiac favoured by most contemporary Western Astrologers.

Kahal - A planetary combination that produces contradictory results: persons born under the combination are courageous, virile, commanding a well-equipped army, and ruling over an extensive area, yet they are intellectually foolish, ignorant. The lords of 9th and 4th houses should be in mutual angles and the lord of the ascendant should be strong for this yoga.

Kaksha - A kaksha is 1/8th of a sign. It is used in Ashtakavarga.

Kala - A unit of Time. An unseen satellite of Sun.

Kala Bala - Strength from time related causes. The Kala Bala is the sum of 9 kinds of strength, all related to time. Kala Bala is one of the components of Shad Bala.

Kanya - Virgo.

Karakamsha - The sign occupied by the Atma karaka.

Karma - The end result of the law of cause and effect in relation to the totality of one's actions in one of the successive states of existence, viewed as a preparatory phase for the next state.

Karka - Cancer.

Katarche - Greek word for "ruling beginning". A chart based upon an inception of some event such as a question or an election.

Kendra Bala - A source of strength based on the house the planet occupies. Planets are strongest in kendras (houses 1,4,7 and 10), weaker in Panaparas (2,5,8 and 11) and weakest in Apoklimas (3,6,9 and 12). Kendra Bala is one of the components of Stana Bala.

Kepler, Johannes - One of the founders of modern astronomy who discovered the three basic laws of planetary motion, among them that planetary orbits are elliptical. He introduced several minor aspects including the bi-quintile (144°), tredecile (108°), quintile (fifth harmonic, 72°), decile or semi-quintile (36°), quindecile (24°), and the semidecile or vigintile (18°).

Ketu - Name for the Dragon's Tail, in Indian Astrology.

Kite - A Grand Trine with one of the planets making an opposition to a fourth planet which in turn makes sextile aspects to the two others of the Grand Trine. The need to place creative expression of talents in a grounded context, supplied by the opposition.

Koch houses - A system of house division developed by Dr. Walter Koch and based on dividing the quarters of the chart formed by the Ascendant and Midheaven axes into three equal time segments rather than three equal spatial segments as in the Regiomontanus system.

Koz Warning - A time of moderate, easily utilized planetary energy when the A5 Spectrum waveform has a strength of 400 to 500 units.

Krittika - One of the 27 nakshatras

Kronos - The fourth symbolic planet used in Uranian astrology.

Kumbha - Aquarius.

Kundali - Chart.

Latitude (Celestial) - Measurement of distance of any planet or star north or south of the ecliptic.

Latitude (Terrestrial) - Degree of distance of any place north or south of the Earth's equator. Leo - This regal sign is the fifth sign of the zodiac. Fixed and Fiery. Ruled by the Sun. Leo's symbol is the lion.

Libra - The seventh sign of the zodiac, Libra is the sign most concerned with relationships. Cardinal and Airy. Ruled by Venus. The exaltation of Saturn. Libra's symbol is the scales, or balance. Lights - Astrological reference to the Sun and the Moon.

Light of the time - Another way of expressing the sect of the chart at some katarchic event. In other words if born in the daytime the light of the time is the Sun, if at night, the Moon.

Lilith - The "Black Moon", a supposed invisible satellite of the Earth, also an energy vortex in the Sun-Moon-Earth system. There is as well an asteroid called Lilith.

Line of Advantage -An imaginary axis that connects the third decan of the third and ninth houses. The Moon's North Node east of this axis is thought to be in a favorable or advantageous position.

Link - To form a linkage.

Linkage - An interaspect that is formed by any enhancement angle or a quincunx.

Linkage Angle - An angle that forms a linkage, which is any of the 4 enhancement angles or the quincunx.

Linked Persons - The 2 persons who form a linkage.

Light collection- A term used in horary astrology to describe developments when two planets not in aspect both apply to a third, slower planet that "collects their light" (unites their energies), symbolically establishing a relationship between the two.

Local Mean Time -The actual time in a given location based upon the Sun's position at the Midheaven (noon) of the place. Abbreviated LMT; also called True Local Time (TLT).

Local Space - The name for all the concepts related to how the sky appears to an observer on the Earth's surface. Astrologically, local space ideas are used to describe how planets affect the mundane affairs of everyday living for a person.

Local time - Sun time. The actual time at a location within a time zone. Noon local time occurs when the Sun crosses the meridian of that location.

Locational astrology -The practice of casting a horoscope for the place in which a person resides, or would like to reside, rather than the place of birth. This system is often used to determine the location likely to prove most congenial to a particular individual.

Logarithms - Tables by which when a planet's motion is known its position at a given time may be readily calculated.

Logjam - term for a period of time when there are a large number of planets at or near their stations. With so many planets standing still, there is a marked lack of progress in current situations, since there are few aspects happening to create change.

Long Ascension - Signs of long ascension take longer to ascend than others. Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius. Long and short ascension are reversed in the southern hemisphere.

Longitude (Celestial) - Measurement along the ecliptic in terms of signs and degrees from the point of the vernal equinox. The longitude of a planet in the 126th degree of the zodiac is 6° Leo.

Longitude (Terrestrial) - Distance in degrees, minutes and seconds of any place east or west of Greenwich, England. Also measured in hours, minutes and seconds.

Longitudinal Synchronization - A Magi Astrology term for planetary synchronization of planets in the longitudes.

Lord - Refers to the primary ruler of a sign, usually by domicile.

Lost objects - Personal possessionsare shown by the 2nd house. The house and sign placement of the 2nd ruler usually give a clue to the location of the lost object. The lost item will usually be found if it's ruler is retrograde and/or applies to a favorable aspect with the owner's ruler. A Void of Course Moon often means that the lost item will be found.

Luminaries - Lights. The Sun and the Moon.

Luna - The Moon.

Lunar Eclipse - When the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow and seems to disappear. An omen of deep transformation, often lasting 6 to 12 months.

Lunar Node - The points on the zodiac where the plane of the moon's orbit intersects the plane of the ecliptic (the Earth's orbit). These points are called the north node and the south node. They are generally considered to describe a person's karmic patterns and goals. Lunar Mansions - 27 traditional sectors (nakshatras) of the zodiac, where the Moon spends her time on a day by day basis. Each mansion, of 13° 20' duration, has a specific influence, especially if Moon, Sun, Ascendant, or Ruling Planet are placed there.

Lunar period -The time it takes the Moon to return to a particular point in the zodiac; the Moon's zodiacal period, a little less than twenty-seven days, eight hours.

Lunar Return - Time of the month when the transiting Moon is conjunct natal Moon.

Lunar Return - A very significant time in life when the progressed Moon reaches the conjunction with natal Moon for the first time at around age 27, marking the first part of the difficult transition from the phase of Youth to the phase of Maturity associated with the Saturn Return. The second Lunar Return occurs around age 54 and the third around age 81. See Saturn Return.

Lunar return chart -A chart cast for the time the Moon returns to the exact degree, minute, and second it occupied at the moment of an individual's birth.

Lunation - A lunar period, measured from one place in the zodiac until the Moon's return thereto. A chart made for the moment the Moon conjoins the Sun is called a Lunation Chart.

Lunation cycle- The Moon's phases relative to the Sun as it moves from one new Moon to the next; the time interval between two successive lunations is approximately twenty-nine and one-half days, a lunar month.

Magi AstroChart - A birth chart drawn the Magi Astrology way. Normal birth charts depict the locations of only the longitudes of the planets. A Magi AstroChart includes the declinations. All planets that are in significant declinational aspect to each other are highlighted by connecting lines.

Magi Astrology - A branch of astrology with astrological principles and rules of interpretation developed by the Magi Society in 1625. In Magi Astrology, Chiron and the declinations are always included, and unique analytical tools of Planetary Geometry are applied to obtain a more complete analysis than the standard methods.

Magi Astrology Law of Symmetrical Enhancement - Whenever 3 or more planets are aligned in such a manner that the planets form a symmetrical pattern, then the aligned planets enhance each other and influence each other positively (except if 90 degree angles are formed - as is the case with the T-Square). The positive influence of the combined planets will conform to the integrated combined symbolisms of the planets that form the symmetrical alignment.

Magical Angle - Two planets that are Trine, Conjunct or Quincunx - unless Saturn is involved. Whenever a planet from one person's chart makes a 150-degree angle with a planet from another person's chart, one of two things can happen.

Magi Dek Quad - A Declinational Magi Quad.

Magical Time - the time period when an aspect is most powerful; in Magi Astrology, these are the 3 days before and after an aspect is exact.

Magi Pyramid - A term in Magi Astrology referring to the condition where in the declinations, at least 3 planets are each in aspect to one another. This usually occurs when 3 planets are all parallel to each other, but it is possible for it to occur when 1 planet is contra-parallel to 2 planets, which are, in turn, parallel to each other.

Magi Quad - A Magi Quad is a Multiple-Planet Aspect comprised of 4 planets. In the longitudes, it exists wherever 4 planets are aligned in such a way that they form a symmetrical pattern such that at least 2 of the 4 sides are parallel to each other.

Magi Quad/Yod - A 5 planet alignment consisting of a Magi Quad with a 5th planet where this extra planet is located at either the near or far midpoint of the 2 pairings of the M/Q; the 5th planet is often the key to the symbolism of the entire alignment.

Malefic-The belief that some planets, like Mars and Uranus, are destructive, negative influences, while others like Jupiter and Venus are positive and beneficial.

Mars-Represents action, passion, drive and determination. It deals with one's sexuality, force, daring, courage, competitive nature, aggression and assertion.

Major aspect - Also called Ptolemaic aspects. The conjunction - 0 degrees , sextile - 60 degrees, square - 90 degrees, trine - 120 degrees, and opposition - 180 degrees.

Map -A horoscope.

Masculine & Feminine Planets - Pluto, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars and Sun are masculine. Neptune, Venus and Moon are feminine. Mercury is convertible; masculine when with masculine planets and feminine when with feminine. When unaspected its sex is determined by its sign.

Masculine signs - Air and fire signs. The odd numbered "yang" signs of the natural zodiac.

Match Degrees - When 2 planets match degrees, they are in the same degree of either the same sign, or the same degree of 2 different signs. They can also be in the same degree north or south declinations.

Matutine - Stars or planets rising before the Sun in the morning.

Medium Coeli (MC) - Meaning "the middle of the skies", the MC is the point at the moment of birth where the Ecliptic crosses the meridian of the place of birth. As the culmination point, the MC is usually interpreted as representing issues of ambition, career, outward striving, making one's mark on the world.

Melancholic - One of the four temperaments, associated with the element of earth. The melancholic personality indicates a conservative, practical, dependable temperament, prone to stubborness and possessiveness.

Meridian -A great circle, encircling Earth, that passes through the North and South Poles. A line of longitude.

Meteorological astrology -The use of astrology for forecasting the weather conditions, earthquakes, and severe storms. Also called natural astrology.

Midheaven -The most commonly used term for Medium Coeli, usually designated by the initials M.C.

Midnight Ephemeris- An ephemeris that lists astrological data exact at the beginning of the day, 12:00 A.M. Also called zero hour ephemeris.

Mundane astrology -That branch of astrology that deals with world events and universal trends rather than the individual.

Masculine Signs-The Fire and Air Signs, comprised of Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius. It represents assertive and self-assured energy.

Mean/ Average Daily Motion of Planets - The normal rate of travel of a planet through the zodiac.

Mean Time - True Local Time.

Medium Coeli (MC) - Mid-heaven, or meridien. The Southern point of the chart.

Mega-Event - A historic event of significance.

Mercury - Represents communication, intellect, consciousness, transportation, dexterity and the mind.

Mercury Retrograde - A brief but generally stressful period during which Mercury's motion through the zodiac appears to be reversed.

Meridian - A great circle projected onto the celestial sphere, which encompasses the north and south points on the horizon and the zenith, which is directly above the observer.

Meridien Distance - Measurement along the celestial equator between any point and the upper or lower meridien. A portion of the semi-arc, usually expressed in degrees of time. Metonic Cycle - The 19 year cycle wherein the conjunctions of the Sun and Moon begin to appear progressively in the zodiac in the same places as in the previous cycle. Discovered by Meton of Athens.

Mid-heaven - Meridien, or MC (Medium Coeli). The point of the chart at which the meridien intercepts the ecliptic. In many house systems the MC is also the cusp of the tenth house.

Midnight Mark - Mean local time at birthplace when it is midnight at Greenwich, England.

Midpoint - The exact midpoint between two planets as measured in degrees and minutes of arc around the chart.

Midpoint Crossing - A Midpoint Crossing occurs whenever a planet crosses an equal degree angle to the midpoint of any 2 other planets. A Midpoint Crossing refers to an alignment of 3 planets.

Midpoint Equivalence - refers to a law of Magi Astrology. The law states: Every midpoint acts as if it were a planet. All midpoints influence planets and other midpoints under the same rules as planets themselves.

Midpoint Projection - By the Theory of Midpoint Projection, always use the term Conjunct or Trine - not Opposition or Sextile. All contacts of any multiple of 30 degrees by a midpoint to a planet is positive, but the strongest is the Conjunction (Opposition) and Trine (Sextile).

Midpoint trees - Graphical representations of the midpoints which fall within a specified orb of a given planet, believed to illustrate in greater detail the quality of expression that planet is likely to have.

Modality - The 3 modalities are different styles or manners of expression of the 4 elemental energies. These modalities go by the names cardinal, fixed and mutable.

Mono-Directional Aspect - A Magi term for an aspect that has both planets in retrograde, or both planets in direct motion.

Monomoiria - This is the apportioning of individual degrees to each of the planets starting with either the sign ruler and continuing in descending Chaldean order, or the triplicity / trigon lord, and varying with sect.

Moon - The Earth's satellite. The Moon is classed as a planet in astrology and represents matters to do with women, the mother, the public, the emotions and so on. A feminine planet, she rules Cancer and is exalted in Taurus.

Moon's Nodes - Shadow planets.

Movable signs - The Cardinal signs, the movers and shakers of the zodiac, namely, Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn.

MQ - Abbreviation for longitudinal Magi Quad.

Multiple Planet Aspect - A Multiple-Planet Aspect is an alignment of 3 ort more planets such that all the planets that constitute the alignment influence each other. Magi Quads and Midpoint Crossings are examples.

Mundane Astrology-The branch of Astrology which deals with places as opposed to people; world events and universal trends are the focal point.

Mundane Parallel - Equal distance of two planets from any angle.

Music of the Spheres - Ancient astronomers, starting at least with Pythagoras, held that the Earth was the centre of the universe and that the planets and stars occupied positions in a series of concentric, crystal spheres surrounding the Earth. Each sphere corresponded to a note in the musical scale. The spheres rotated and the subtle sound generated was called the Music of the Spheres.

Mutable - One of the modalities for expressing elemental energies. The mutable expression involves expanding in all directions at once, changing or transforming the original energy in new ways. It suggests traits of flexibility, changeableness and adaptability, often promoting a change in conscious awareness.

Mutablility - One of the three modalities which finds expression through the signs Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. These signs share a common dynamic, namely that of adaptability, changeability and they provide flexibility.

Mutable Signs-Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. This Quality represents a flexible nature.

Mutual application - An applying aspect in which the two planets are moving toward one another because one is advancing and the other is retrograde. A potent force in bringing matters to perfection. Often brings a fast, unexpected result.

Mutual reception - This occurs when two planets receive each other in one of their essential dignities. Mutual reception by ruling sign is the strongest. There can be reception (in order of strength) by sign, exaltation, triplicity, term, or face. There are also mixed mutual receptions, as when planet A is in the terms of B while planet B is in the exaltation of A.

Mystic Rectangle - A configuration formed by at least four planets, comprising two trines and two sextile aspects with oppositions forming from all four corners of the configuration.

Nabhasayoga - A group of 32 planetary combinations classified in 4 categories depending upon their commonality, viz., Akriti (shape)-20 combinations, Sankhya (number)-7 combinations, Ashraya (dependence)-3 combinations, and Dala (petal)-2 combinations.

Nabhiyoga - A planetary combination formed by Jupiter in the 9th house, lord of the 9th house in the llth from Jupiter, i.e., 7th from ascendant, and Moon associated with Jupiter. The combination bestows on the individual born under it auspicious events in life, especially after the age of 25 years; he also receives many honors from the state and accumulates huge wealth.

Nadir - Cusp of fourth house, Lower Meridien, Imum Coeli (IC).

Nagayoga - A planetary combination formed by the lord of the Navamsa sign of the 10th house lord occupying the 10th house along with the ascendant lord. An individual born under it receives his education specially after the age of 16 years. He finally receives state honors and riches.

Nagendra Yoga - A planetary combination formed by the placement of the lord of 9th house in 3rd house inspected by Jupiter. It makes the individual physically well proportioned, good-natured and learned. His prosperity increases after the age of 6 years.

Naidhana - Seventh asterism from the birth asterism.

Naisargika Bala - Inherent strength of a planet as distinguished from Kala Bala or temporal strength.

Naisargika Dasa - Number of years assigned to different planets which is taken into account specially in the determination of ones longevity under certain methods of its calculation. Years alotted to different planets under it are as follows: Moon: I year; Mars: 2 years; Mercury: 9 years; Venus: 20 years; Jupiter: 18 years; Sun: 20 years; and Saturn: 50 years.

Nakshatras - Lunar Mansions in Vedic Astrology.

Nakshatra, Maha - Asterisms, viz., Anuradha, Mrigashirsha, Swati, and Makkha. Their presence as birth asterism in any of the partners for marriage counteracts all inauspicious incompatibilities.

Naktya Yoga - A planetary combination used in Tajaka system. It relates to the relationship between planets with different motions in close association. If the lord of the ascendant and the lord of the house whose result is being studied do not have mutual aspect but there is a fast-moving planet in between them, then the fast-moving planet in between them transfers the benefic influence of the anterior planet to the forward one.

Nala Yoga - A planetary combination formed the exaltation of the lord of the Navamsa sign in which the lord of the 9th house is placed and is in association with the ascendant lord. It makes the individual powerful after 7 years of age. He receives many state honours and is interested in the scriptures.

Nalika Yoga - A planetary combination formed by the placement of the lord of the 5th house in the 9th house while the lord of the 11th house occupies the 2nd house along with Moon. The combination makes the individual very creative and an excellent orator. Many heads of state pay respect to him.

Nanda Yoga - A planetary combination formed by two planets in each of the two signs and one planet in each of the three signs. It bestows affluence and long life.

Nandi - Bull of Lord Shiva. It symbolises the second zodiacal sign, Taurus, and stands for Procreative potential.

Nasir Yoga - A planetary combination formed by the ascendant lord and Jupiter placed in the 4th house, Moon associated with the lord of the 7th house, and the ascendant aspected by a benefic. An individual born under this combination is very charitable, rich, well-proportioned yet stocky in constitution. He gains repute after the age of 33 years.

Natal - Synonymous with 'birth.' Natal chart and birth chart are terms which can be used interchangeably.

Natal Chart - Horoscope drawn for the Nativity. Birth Chart.

Natal astrology - The branch of astrology dealing with the individual. The horoscope cast for the birth time of the individual, showing life potentials.

Natalization - The concept where an action creates a birth chart, and the Planetary Geometry of the moment of the action is preserved in the birth chart, which then has all of the properties of astrological charts.

Native - Subject of a Nativity, or Natal Chart.

Nativity -A natal horoscope.

Natural chart -A chart with 0° Aries on the cusp of the first house that shows the natural horoscope position of signs. Also called a flat chart.

Nau Yoga - A planetary combination formed by all planets occupying consecutively the first seven houses without any gap. It makes the individual earn his livelihood from professions connected with navigation, fishing, import-export, and international commerce.

Navamsa - One-ninth division of a sign. Planetary position in these divisions significantly affect the disposition of planets in the natal chart. Each of these divisions is ruled by a planet which need not be identical with the planet owning the sign. If a planet occupies the same sign in the natal and the Navamsa charts, it attains great benefic power and is known as Vargottama.

Navaratna - Nine precious stones, viz., ruby, related with Sun; pearl, related with Moon; coral with Mars; cinnamon ruby or hessonite, also known as gomedh, related with Rahu; yellow sapphire or oriental topaz, also known as pushpa-paraga or pokharaj, related with Jupiter; blue sapphire or neelam, with Saturn; emerald or panna with Mercury; Cat's Eye with Ketu; and diamond, related with Venus.

Neechabhanga Raja Yoga - The planetary combination for the cancellation of adverse effects of a debilitated planet. The cancellation enables the person to attain the status of a king. The combination is formed in several ways.

Neomenium - The change of the Moon to New Moon, especially that which occurs closest to the Vernal Ingress.

Neptune - One of the outer, trans-personal planets. Said by modern astrologers to rule Pisces, with Jupiter. Neutral Planets - Mercury and Neptune. These two tend to be benefic when well aspected to the benefics and unfavourable when forming any aspect to the malefics.

Night House - The sign a planet rules by night. Except for the sun, whose night house is Leo, each planet rules a feminine (even numbered) sign by night. The Sun has Leo as its only house.

Ninth House - The ninth chart segment, governing higher learning, religious education, long distance travel, lawyers, legal affairs and publishing.

Nirayana System - Fixed or sidereal zodiac. It does not take into account the degree of precession in fixing the position of planets. This is the system used in oriental or Vedic astrology.

Nocturnal - Planets below the horizon (between the first and seventh cusps via the IC), versus Diurnal, above the horizon.

Nocturnal Arc - The distance in space or time taken by a planet passing through the night.

Nocturnal Chart - Nativity of person born at night.

Nocturnal Signs - The zodiacal signs powerful during night. The first four zodiacal signs from Aries, and the 9th and 10th signs are nocturnal ones whereas the others are diurnal signs.

Nodal Degree - The same degree, regardless of sign position, as the Moon's Mean Nodes.

Nodes - The point in the zodiac where a planet, particularly the Moon, passes from southern into northern lattitude is called the North Node and when moving in the opposite direction (crossing from north to south) is called the South Node. Noon Mark - Mean local time at birthplace when it is noon at Greenwich, England.

Northern Signs - Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo. In these signs the Sun has northern declination.

North Node - The lunar node where the moon's orbit passes from south of the ecliptic to north. Also called "Caput Draconis" (Latin for "head of the dragon"). Indicates your karmic potentials and lessons in this life.

Novile - A minor aspect of 40 degrees, being 1/9th of the zodiacal circumference. Implies completion of a cycle and is often associated with some sort of spiritual test.

Nripa Yoga - A planetary combination formed by the lord of Navamsa sign of ascendant associated with the lord of Moon sign and the lord of the 10th house aspecting it. An individual born under this combination occupies a very high status in society and is much renowned. The Yoga fructifies early in life.

Numerology - An ancient science that offers insight into the personality by assigning numeric values to names and birth dates, calculating numerological values and then interpreting the results.

Nuptial Planetary Geometry - One of 4 types of Combined Planetary Geometry deemed to be conducive to a marriage. They are: Romantic Super Linkages, Symmetrical Combined Planetary Geometry, Romance Linkages, and Sexual Linkages.

Nutation - It is that part of the precessional motion of the pole of Earth's equator which depends upon the periodic motion of Sun and Moon in their orbit round Earth. The periodic oscillation observed in the precession of Earth's axis and the precession of the equinoxes. It is periodic in nature equal to a 19-year cycle.

Obeying signs - The southern signs opposite the commanding signs.

Obhayachari Yoga - A planetary combination formed by planets, other than Moon, situated on both sides of Sun. It makes the individual well proportioned, handsome, skilled and effective in many

undertakings, full of enthusiasm, tolerant, and balanced in approach even to complicated problems. Such a person is affluent like a king, enjoys good health and possesses all good things in life.

Occidental & Oriental - From cusp of tenth house westward to fourth is occidental. The opposite half is oriental. Planets are sometimes described as being occidental or oriental of the Sun. Occidental means setting before the Sun, oriental means rising after the Sun.

Occidental of the sun - A planet is occidental of the Sun when it rises or sets after the Sun. If you rotate the chart so the Sun is on the Ascendant, planets below the horizon are occidental. The Moon, Mercury, and Venus are accidentally dignified when occidental. The western half of a chart between the M.C. and 4th cusp is called the occidental side of the chart. A planet setting in the west after the sun is also called "vespertine." influence.

Occultation - Planets occasionally obscure other planets or stars temporarily. The Moon, transiting a variable orbit, does so frequently. The phenomenon is termed occultation to distinguish it from eclipses. An occultation is equal to a powerful total or partile conjunction.

Occurring Magi Sequence - This refers to a given day's existing M/Qs or MDXs, and are listed and organized according to the appropriate Magi Sequence.

Offset - A technique of interpreting an aspect by reversing the symbolism of one of the two planets that form the aspect. This is done in Magi Astrology when interpreting a Turbulent Aspect that is also a Historic Aspect.

Oikodektor - The greek word for domicile lord, literally meaning "house steward". The planet that takes care of the affairs of a given house or sign.

Oochabala - Strength assigned to an exalted planet.

Opposition - A generally adverse aspect of 180 degrees, depending on the planets involved.

Orb -The number of degrees by which an aspect may vary from partile (exactness) and remain effective.

Orbit -The path a heavenly body follows as it travels around another stellar body.

Orb of a planet -The orb is measured as the diameter of an imaginary sphere of light surrounding a planet. The light within this sphere is strong enough to form aspects with another planet by mixing with the light surrounding the other planet.

Oriental - In astrology, it refers to the eastern half of the cusp of the ascendant. The planets situated immediately before the rising Sun. Such planets possess exceptional strength.

Outer Range Progression - When the progression "peak" is too far away to really matter - such as a progression that peaks or becomes exact in 500 years.

Out of Bounds - Planets which are outside the usual north or south measurement of the celestial equator within which planets rest.

Out-of-Sign - Aspect which, though within orb, is not within the bounds of the aspecting sign.

Outer Planets - Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. These planets, the furthest out in our Solar System, are invisible to the naked eye and so were only discovered in modern times, due to the invention of the telescope. They affect us at a very deep, subliminal level and the unconscious, generational effects are only brought to the surface when aspected by the Luminaries or other visible planets.

Ownnership- Ownership of zodiacal signs and asterisms by different planets.

Pairing - Refers to any 2 planets of a Magi Quad that interact with each other on a primary level. In the case of longitudes, the pairings are always between 2 planets that form one of the two parallel lines. In the declinations, the pairings are between 2 planets that form the 2 midpoints that are parallel to each other.

Pallas Athene - The warrior queen. An asteroid seen by modern astrologers as significant.

Parallel Aspect - Planets having equal distance in declination on the same side of the equator. A similar effect to the conjunction. Contra-parallel is the equal distance in declination on opposite sides of the equator and is similar in effect to the opposition aspect.

Parallel of declination - This occurs when two planets are the same number of degrees of arc North or South of the Celestial Equator.

Parallel of latitude - This occurs when two planets are the same number of degrees of arc North or South of the Ecliptic.

Paran - Angular relationship between a planet and a fixed star in a chart. Parans can occur when any planet (esp. Sun or Moon) is angular and any star is also angular.

Pars Fortunae - The Part of Fortune, one of the most important of the Arabic Parts. The point lies the same distance in longitude from the ascendant as the Moon lies from the Sun. Its house represents an area of life where one finds happiness and natural tranquility, expressing innate abilities. It indicates an area wherein the self is easily expressed.

Parts - Calculated points in the horoscope.

Partile - An aspect is described as partile when it is exact (ie within 1 degree of arc). Traditionally, to be truly partile, the planets should also be in the same degree of latitude, as well as longitude.

Part of fortune - The benefic point on the Ecliptic as far from the Eastern Horizon as the Moon is from the Sun. The Part of Fortune and its dispositor are helpful in matters of finance and in finding lost objects.

Peregrine - When a planet is void of essential dignities. Planets in mutual reception cannot be peregrine.

Peregrine planet - A peregrine planet is one that has no essential dignity at its current position in the zodiac. A planet in one of its debilities with no essential dignity is still considered peregrine.

Perfection - When an applying aspect between two planets becomes exact, the aspect is said to reach perfection. If the aspect signifying a matter can be brought to perfection without impedition, then the matter itself can be accomplished or "brought to perfection."

Perigee - The place in a planet's orbit which is nearest to the Earth.

Perihelion - The point in a planet's orbit where it is closest to the sun and moving as fast as it can. This often intensifies the planet's effects on us.

Perpetual Progression - A concept in Magi Astrology referring to the condition where an "applying" Progression lasts many years. Most successful companies have Perpetual Progressions of either Pluto or Neptune making an enhancement angle to Venus.

Personal Aspect - An aspect that exists in the chart of a person or other living entity.

Personal Planet - A faster moving planet that represents "ordinary" states of awareness or everyday workings of the mind. Includes the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars. Also known as inner planet.

Phlegmatic - One of the four temperaments, associated with the element of water. The phlegmatic personality indicates a withdrawn, sensitive, emotional, somewhat unstable temperament prone to moodiness and self-protective behavior.

Pivot - This is what the Greek astrologers called an angular house.

Places - Ancient term for Houses.

Placidus system - Method of house division, named after the 17th century astrologer Placidus de Tito, using time division to trisect the diurnal semi-arc.

Placing the question - The method of identifying which of the twelve mundane houses relate to the horary question. The planets ruling the signs on the cusps of those houses become the chief significators. Unless the question is located in the proper houses, the answer given by the aspect between significators will be no better than chance.

Planet - describes any heavenly body which when viewed from Earth appears to move, as distinguished from fixed stars.

Planetary Eclipse - Any two planets creating an eclipse only refers to Sun and Moon. A conjunction and a parallel equals a Planetary eclipse - very strong aspects.

Planetary Geometry - Any line or lines, shape, or pattern that is formed when connecting lines are drawn between the planets. Besides the planets, Planetary Geometry can include the Ascendant, Midheaven, Asteroids, and Comets and any other astrologically significant factor, whether real or calculated. Aspects are the simplest forms of Planetary Geometry.

Planetary hours - The hours of the day are ruled by planets in their order from Saturn inward to the Moon. More on Planetary Hours.

Planetary Personality - In Magi Astrology, it is believed that each planet has a personality, just like each of the 12 signs.

Planetary strength - The power of a planet in a horary chart due to the sum total of the planet's dignities or debilities, both essential and accidental.

Planetary Storm - A pattern containing a large number of planets interconnected by many close aspects, typically lasting for 1 or 2 weeks. Planetary storms show up in the A5 Spectrum as strong, tall waveforms , with clearly defined harmonics, that persist for a long time.

Planetary Synchronization - Planetary Synchronization is the Focus of every chart . Itrefers to the condition where at least 3 planets are within orb to all make aspects to each other. This can occur in the longitudes or declinations.

Platic aspect - An aspect that is not exact or partile but is within orb.

Pluto - Until recently, the furthest known planet from the Sun. Rules Scorpio with Mars. Pluto Square - A difficult aspect.

Point of Fortune - A mathematically calculated point in the sky which is the same distance from the Ascendant as the Moon is from the Sun. It is associated with success, happiness, and luck.

Polar Elevation - A body in the heavens at a certain elevation from the meridien towards the horizon. The lattitude for which a chart is cast.

Polarity - Polarity of the horoscope is the lattitude of the place on which it is cast. Polarity of a relationship is the balance between the masculine and feminine forces.

Polarities - A division into two, usually the gender of a sign: Feminine/Masculine.

Ponderous - A planet that is moving slowly is said to be ponderous. The slower of two planets is more ponderous than the faster one. The more ponderous planet receives an aspect; the lighter (faster) planet casts one.

Post-ascension - This is what the Greek astrologers called a succedent house.

Postnatal Eclipse - An eclipse, either solar or lunar, which occurs in the months immediately following the birth of the native.

Power of the aspects - In traditional astrology, the conjunction is most powerful, followed in order of decreasing power by the opposition, dexter square, sinister square, dexter trine, sinister trine, dexter sextile, and sinister sextile.

Precession - Due to the pole of the equator revolving around the pole of the ecliptic, the equinoctial point moves backward with relation to the constellations at the rate of approximately 50" per year. It makes a complete revolution through the twelve constellations in the great cosmic year of 25,920 earthly years, or 2160 years to pass through one constellation.

Precessed Solar Return - Solar Return Chart corrected for precession.

Precession of the equinox - The "backward" motion of the vernal equinox, which marks 0 degrees Aries, against the backdrop of the fixed stars. A complete cycle takes about 25,800 years. The gravitational forces of the Sun, Moon, and planets on the Earth cause a westward movement of the intersection of the planes of the Equator and the Ecliptic at a rate of about 50.23 seconds of arc per year.

Prenatal Eclipse - An eclipse, either solar or lunar, which occurs in the months preceding the birth of the native. Not usually considered more than 12 months prior to the birthdate.

Prenatal Epoch - The astrological moment of conception, approximately nine months before birth. The Moon's place on epoch day, or its opposite, becomes either the ascending or descending sign and degree at birth.

Primary Directions - Method of directing based on a degree for a year.

Primary Focal Planet - A planet that recurs so often in the first 6 M/Qs of an Occurring Magi Sequence that its importance cannot be ignored and its symbolisms must be given highest priority in an analysis of the birth chart as a whole.

Primary Magi Quad - The most influential and powerful M/Q in an Occurring Magi Sequence; usually the first one.

Prime vertical - The vertical East-West great circle, whose plane is perpendicular to the plane of the meridian, and which passes through the East Point, Zenith, West Point, and Nadir of a particular location. An observer who is standing upright and facing south will be standing in the plane of the prime vertical.

Profection - This is the moving of some point or planet at the rate of one sign per year , 13 signs in 12 months in the case of the monthly profection, and either 1 sign per day or 1 sign per 2.5 days.

Progressed Horoscope - A chart calculated for as many days after birth as there are years in the life of the querent.

Progressed Super Transit - A Progressed Transit that is a Super Transit.

Progression - Movement of or aspect to planet or sensitive point in progressed horoscope.

Prohibition - When one significator is applying to a major aspect with another, symbolizing perfection of the matter, but a third planet aspects one of the significators before they can aspect each other, a prohibition occurs.

Project - Refers to the concept that midpoints can be simultaneously in the same degree of opposing signs.

Promittor - Significator of certain events. In a Horary question of marriage, for instance, the lord of the seventh is Promittor.

Pronoia - One of the three types of fate according to the Greeks, associated with the Moon.

Prorogator - The Alpheta: planet which upholds life.

Proper Motion - Direct Motion through the zodiac in order of the signs.

Proximity Enhancement - A term in Magi Astrology referring to the condition where any 2 planets are in equal-degree aspect to each other, and the aspect is closer than 0:30 degrees. Such proximity of 2 planets is aspect to each other is considerably more favorable than a wide aspect of the same 2 planets.

Ptolemaic aspect - Ptolemy distinguished four major aspects between zodiac signs: sextile, square, trine, and opposition.

Ptolemaic System - Ancient geocentric cosmic schema, based in the belief that the planets, Sun, Moon and stars revolved around the earth. Formalised by Hellenic astrologer Ptolemy.

Psychological astrology - The practice of astrology, the purpose of which is to provide information, insight or advice about psychological issues or issues of personal or spiritual growth. The primary tool is the natal chart.

Quadralizethis word refers to the process of combining to form a Magi Quad. Two pairings quadralize to form an M/Q; or a pairing and a composite quadralize to form an Aspected M/Q.

Quadrants - The four quarters in a chart, or the four seasons in the year or the zodiac.

Quadrupedian signs - Alternate term for bestial signs.

Quadrate - Major malefic square aspect of 90 degrees.. Quadratures - Moon's dichotomes: changes, phases or quarters. Frequently referred to as the square aspect.

Quadruplicities - Division of the signs of the Zodiac into three categories - Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable - related to specific attributes common to each category. Cardinal signs represent signs associated with beginnings; fixed signs are identified more with completion; and mutable signs can go either way. Also known as the Qualities.

Qualities - The Signs are classified by their Qualities: Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable. Also referred to as modalities or quadruplicities.

Quarter periods - One of the general time lord systems of the hellenistic period, based upon quarter periods of the Moon.

Quaters - North, South, East and West.

Querent - Person asking a question of the astrologer.

Quincunx - An arc of 150 degrees. Also known as the inconjunct; this aspect creates a certain uneasiness and a feeling of discomfort.

Quindecile - A minor easy aspect, the fifteenth harmonic, 24°.

Quintessence - Fifth alchemical principle. The underlying spiritual basis underpinning the four elements, corresponding to the idea of the Ether, or space-time continuum.

Quintile - The quintile is an aspect of 72 degrees. It is an easy minor aspect often signifying human endeavor and accomplishments.

Radical - Pertaining to the birth chart, also known as the radical chart. In horary astrology, a radical chart is one that describes the situation and is likely to give a valid answer.

Radical chart - The natal horoscope. In horary astrology, the term radical applies to a chart deemed readable by virtue of the Ascendant being greater than 3° and less than 27° in any sign.

Radical position - The position a planet occupies in a natal horoscope.

Radix - Referring to the Natal Chart. In Horary terminology, it implies that conditions have been fulfilled enabling the chart to be judged.

Rahu - Name for the Dragon's Head in Indian Astrology.

Rahu Kalam - A portion of the day ruled by Rahu which is considered inauspicious. It lasts for 12 hours. It is calculated by adding to the time of sunrise for the day the following figures to get the time of its commencement.

Rajapada Yoga - An auspicious combination formed by Moon and ascendant in Vargottam (q.v.) Navamsa, and four or more planets expecting them. It makes the individual head of a state or its equivalent.

Rajasic Houses - According to some astrologers, the 2nd, 7th, 10th, and 11th houses in a natal chart. These are the houses in a chart which are specifically related with worldly attainments.

Rajju Yoga - A planetary combination formed by all planets in movable signs. The combination makes the individual born under it to settle in a foreign country. He is generally unjust and engages in illegal activities.

Rapport measurement - applied to progressions based on advancing a planet's natal position one degree for each year after birth.

Rapt Motion - Apparent diurnal motion from east to west.

Rasatala Yoga - A planetary combination constituted by the lord of the 12th house in exaltation, and Venus posited in the 12th house and expected by the lord of the 4th house. Persons born under it attain the status of head of state. They may find wealth buried under the earth.

Ravi Yoga - A combination of planets formed by Sun in the 10th house and the lord of the 10th house in 3rd house along with Saturn. It makes the individual born with this combination a scientist who attains a powerful status in administration. He eats very little, is much occupied with his studies, and is greatly respected.

Rays - A planet is said to be "under the rays" of the Sun when it lies within a distance of the Sun's orb. Thus a planet within 17o of the Sun is "under the Sun's rays" or "under the Sunbeams." When the planet gets within half the Sun's orb, it is combust or burned by the Sun's rays. When it lies within 17 minutes of the Sun's center, it is Cazimi or in the heart of the Sun.

Reception - Planets in each other's dignities act as though in good aspect to each other. When in each other's debilities, planets act as though in adverse aspect to each other. Especially important when comparing nativities of two people.

Rectification - Correcting the given birth time to true birth time by comparing the nature and date of significant events in the life with the aspects denoting them.

Refranation - If two planets are applying to an aspect and one of them turns retrograde before the aspect culminates, it is said to refrain from the aspect, showing that the effect indicated by the aspect will not materialise.

Regard - A term often used by ancient astrologers by planets that see one another by aspect.

Regiomontanus houses - A system of house division based on dividing the quarters of the Equator defined by the Ascendant and Midheaven axes into equal spatial arcs and projecting them back onto the Ecliptic.

Regiomontanus system - Method of house division, evolved by the 15th century astrologer Johannes Muller, who used the pseudonym Regiomontanus. This system produces accurate results in polar regions.

Regulus - A benefic Fixed Star in the 30th degree of Leo. The most royal of the four Royal Stars, aka Cor Leonis, the Lion's Heart.

Rekha Yoga - A planetary combination leading to poverty. It arises when a weak lord of ascendant is expected by the lord of the 8th house, and Jupiter is combust by Sun. Alternatively, if the lord of Navamsa occupied by the lord of the 4th house is obscured by Sun while Sun itself is expected by the lord of the 12th house.

Rejoicing - A condition of a planet when it is in any of it's essential or accidental dignities.

Relationship Chart - An astrological chart of a relationship, such as that of a marriage or love relationship. If 2 persons are not married, the relationship chart of 2 persons who are intimate is that of the first time they made love. The Marriage chart or divorce chart are all Relationship Charts.

Report-An interpretation of one's birth chart. Also known as delineation. radical chart.

Retrograde-When a planet appears to be traveling backwards from our perspective on Earth. The energy of a retrograde planet is less assertive and more internalized.

Retrograde application - Term used in reference to a retrograde planet which, because of its retrograde motion, applies to an aspect with another planet. If both planets are moving toward each other, the term mutual application is used.

Retrograde motion - The apparent backward motion of a planet when it appears, as observed from Earth, to reverse its natural direction of travel and move backward in the zodiac.

Retrograde station - The point where a stationary planet begins its retrograde motion, compared with a direct station, where a stationary planet begins its direct motion.

Retrograde Zone - The space along the zodiac between the direct stationand retrograde station of a planet. This is a zone of heightened influence for that planet, since it passes back and forth across this area 3 times over an extended period of time.

Retrogression - The movement of a planet in the direction opposite to that of Earth. It is an apparent retrogression, not an actual change in direction. It occurs due to the relative position of Earth and the planet though the both may actually be moving in the same direction.

Revolution - One complete orbit or cycle. In a natal chart, a planet's return to its natal degree upon completing a circuit of the map.

Right ascension - Measurement along the celestial equator eastward from 0° Aries that describes planetary positions in terms of degrees, minutes and seconds, not zodiacal signs. Sidereal time expressed in unit of arc.

Rising - A planet is said to be rising, or ascending, when moving via the ascendant between the fourth and tenth cusps, i.e. in the eastern hemisphere of the chart.

Rising planet - Any planet that is near the Ascendant in the natal horoscope. Rising planets will have a significant influence on the personality.

Rising Sign-Also known as the Ascendant. The degree at which the Zodiac rests over the eastern horizon of the birthplace at the moment of one's birthA new Sign rises approximately every two hours. The Rising Sign represents one's persona and image to the world.

Romance Aspect - An aspect formed by 2 Romance Planets.

Romance Linkage - A linkage formed by at least 1 Romance Planet.

Romance Planet - Chiron, Venus, or Neptune, based on the belief that these planets have rulerships that govern matters of romance and love.

Romance Transit - A transit by or to a Romance Planet.

Romantic Super Linkage - A Super Linkage where at least one of the inter-aspects is a Chiron Linkage.

Royal Stars - Fixed Stars of particular significance. There are four Royal Stars: Aldebaran, Regulus, Antares and Fomalhaut. Regulus is usually considered the "most royal", although Aldebaran has his proponents.

Ruler - The planet which corresponds to the house or sign in question. Example: Jupiter is the ruler of the 9th house and of Sagittarius.

Rulership - Different signs are ruled by different planets and their influences can be affected by this fact.

Ruling planet - The ruling planet of the horoscope is that planet said to "rule" the Ascending sign. Likewise, planets are said to rule the various houses in the chart based on the sign on the cusp of the respect houses.

Ruling Progression - A positive or negative powerful progression that is the primary influence on the native's life.

Ruminant signs - an obsolete term applied to signs symbolized by cud-chewing animals, namely, Aries (ram), Taurus (bull), and Capricorn (goat).

Sagittarius - The ninth sign of the zodiac. Mutable and fiery. Ruled by Jupiter.

Saros Cycle - The cycle of eclipses, discovered by the ancient Chaldeans, lasting a little over 18 years, when Lunar Eclipses seem to repeat themselves. A full Saros Series lasts some 13 centuries, due to the movement of the lunar nodes.

Satellite - An attendant body revolving around a larger one, its primary. The Moon is a satellite of the Earth, but for historical reasons is called in astrology a planet, as is the Sun. Astronomically, all planets in our solar system are satellites of the Sun.

Satellitium - A group of planets conjoined in a particular area of a chart having a significant effect comparable with the conjunction of all the planets concerned, even though outer members of the group would be normally considered out of orb with each other.

Saturn - The planet symbolising matters to do with karma, responsibility, age and so on. Ruler of Capricorn and Aquarius. Exalted in Libra.

Saturn Aspect - An aspect where Saturn is one of the 2 planets that form the aspect.

Saturn Clash - A Turbulent Inter-aspect formed by Saturn to any planet, especially Chiron, Neptune, Pluto, Venus, Sun, Uranus, Moon, or Jupiter. Saturn Clashes can lead to heartbreak.

Saturn Return - A twenty-nine year cycle, representing a time in life when we feel frustrated, angry, sad, confused, tired and insecure. A time when we become aware that we must accept responsibility for our actions.

Scapulomancy - Divination by interpreting the patterns, cracks and fissures of the burned shoulder blade of an animal. Sometimes considered to be a form of augury.

Scarpomancy - Divination by old shoes.

Scatomancy - Divination by interpreting excrement. A form of Spatalamancy (divination by interpreting skin, bones or excrement).

Scheme of heaven - A term used for a horoscope chart.

Schematomancy - Divination via the appearance of people. Divination in which the personal history of a person is inferred from their form and appearance.

Sciamancy - Divination by communication with spirits. Distinct from Necromancy in that the spirits are voluntary participants in the divination. Divination by consulting the dead.

Sciomancy - is divination using a spirit guide, a method generally employed by channelers. Divination by consulting the dead.

Scorpio - The eighth sign of the zodiac. Scorpio, the Scorpion, is a fixed water sign. It is traditionally ruled by Mars and modern astrologers have designated Pluto as its co-ruler.

Scrying - is a general term for divination using a crystal, mirrors, bowls of water, ink, or flames to induce visions.

Scyphomancy - Divination by drinking cups.

Secondary Directions - The progressed horoscope, based on the "day for a year" system of progressing the nativity first employed by the ancient Arabian astrologers.

Second House - The second segment of the Natal Chart, counted counterclockwise from the Ascendant. Associated with resources, money, talents, property, self-confidence, and the sign Taurus.

Sect - Comes from the greek word hairesis, meaning division. In this case the division is into two: day and night. The planets of the daytime division (sect) are the Sun, Jupiter and Saturn, and the planets of the nocturnal sect are the Moon, Venus and Mars.

Seduction Aspect - An aspect in the sky such that when it occurs, most people are more disposed to seduction, and more susceptible to seduction.

Sedna - A newly discovered trans-plutonian planet, named after the Inuit goddess of the sea. Some 13 billion kilometres from Earth and smaller than Pluto, this "planet" has as yet no accepted astrological meaning. Discovered in 2003, it is estimated to take 10,500 years to orbit the Sun.

Selenomancy - Divination by interpreting the appearance and phase of the moon.

Semi-decile - An aspect of 18 degrees of arc, formed by a division of the 360 degree zodiac by 20.

Semi-quintile - Kepler's decile, a minor benefic aspect of 36 degrees.

Semi-sextile - An aspect of 30 degrees of arc, formed by a division of the 360 degree zodiac by twelve, or a division of the sextile aspect by two. Interpreted usually as a milder or more suble form of sextile aspect. Semi-square - An aspect of 45 degrees of arc, formed by a division of the 360 degree zodiac by eight, or a division of the square aspect by two. Interpreted usually as a milder or more subtle form of square aspect.

Separation - Moving away from the partile (exact aspect). As the planet separates, the aspect becomes weaker. In Horary Astrology, it indicates events just past, or that the matter under inquiry will not eventuate.

Septile - An aspect of 51.4 degrees of arc, formed by a division of the 360 degree zodiac by seven.

Serpents - 19 degrees Scorpio. Considered by some to be a malefic degree of the zodiac.

Sesquiquadrate - An aspect of 135 degrees of arc, the combination of a square and a semi-square. The sesquiquadrate is usually interpreted as providing an influence of irritation or agitation on the planets involved.

Seventh House - Also known as the House of Partnership. It represents marriage, joint partnerships, ventures and business partnerships. It also rules divorce, legalities, open confrontations, contracts, lawsuits and negotiations. Sextile - An aspect of 60 degrees of arc, formed by a division of the 360 degree zodiac by six. Interpretted as having a gently beneficial influence on the planets involved.

Sexual Planets - A term in Magi Astrology that refers to Venus, Mars, and Pluto because it is believed that their symbolisms are the ones that relate to sex.

Sexual Linkage - A linkage between any 2 of the Sexual Planets.

Shadow Planet - Not a true celestial body, but a calculated point of significance in the chart, primarily the Moon's north (ascending) and south (descending) nodes.

Short Ascension - Signs of short ascension are often found intercepted in horoscopes, They are Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus and Gemini. Interception is neither a dignity nor a debility.

Sidreal Time - The amount of time required for a fixed star to revolve around the planet Earth and return to the exact same position in the sky. A sidereal day is equal to twenty three hours, fifty six minutes and four point zero nine seconds (23hr 56' 4.09").

Sidereal Zodiac - Zodiac based on actual positions constellations in the heavens, as opposed to the Tropical Zodiac, which is a fixed format based on the seasons.

Sideromancy - is the burning of straws with a hot iron, the resulting figures having divinatory properties. Divination interpreting straw placed on a hot iron surface.

Sign - A constellation of the zodiac.

Significator - In Natal Astrology, the planet which rules the Ascendant. In Horary, the planet ruling the house governing the matter or person in question.

Silver Linkage - One of the 5 linkages that are Success Linkages, but which is not as strong as the Golden Linkage.

Singleton Aspect - Not part of any Planetary Synchronization.

Sinister Aspect - An aspect read from the left (ie applying to the exact point of aspect).

Sinister - An aspect ray cast foreward in the order of the signs (to the left).

Sixth House - Also known as the House of Health. It is about your job, routine, daily responsibilities, diet, employees, pets and physical fitness. It also addresses a fulfillment of duty and the conscious mind.

Skatharomancy - Divination by interpreting the tracks of a beetle crawling over a grave, especially that of a murder victim.

Slow in Course - A planet moving slower than its Mean Motion.

Slow in motion - Said of a planet when it is traveling slower than its average or mean daily motion. A form of debility.

Social - One of the three orientations where energy is oriented toward relating with others. The social signs are Leo, Virgo, Libra and Scorpio and the social houses are the 5th through 8th houses.

Solar - The Sun, central power source of our solar system. The Sun stands for the individuality in the nativity. It rules Leo and is exalted in Aries.

Solar Arc Directions - A secondary movement in Astrology which takes the daily movement of the Sun and interprets that with a year of life.

Solar chart - A horoscope that is set up with the placement of the Sun positioned at the Ascendant. This type of chart is sometimes used when the hour of birth is not known.

Solar Eclipse - When the Sun is covered up by the Moon. An omen of deep transformation, often lasting 6 to 12 months.

Solar Return - The solar return chart occurs once a year at about the time of one's birthday.

Solid - The signs of the fixed quadruplicity.

Solistice point - Same as Antiscion.

Solmancy - Divination via the interpretation of the patterns formed by the rays of the sun.

Solstice - Sol+systere, latin for Sun and standing still. The place in the ecliptic where the Sun appears to stand still at its furthest point north or south of the equator, the first degree of Cancer or Capricorn.

The northernmost point is the summer solstice and the southernmost is the winter solstice, when viewed from the northern hemisphere.

Solsticial Signs - Cancer and Capricorn. These signs hold the summer and winter solstices cf Equinoctial Signs.

Sortilege - is the casting of lots and the assessment of omens indicated. Divination by casting or drawing lots.

South Node - The lunar node where the moon's orbit passes from north of the ecliptic to south. Also known as "Caudus Draconis" (Latin for "tail of the dragon"). Indicates your karmic talents, habits and blockages from previous lives.

Southern Signs - Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. The Sun in these signs has a southern declination.

Spatalamancy - Divination by interpreting skin, bone or excrement.

Spatilomancy - Divination by means of animal excrements and refuse.

Spatulamancy - Divination by shoulder-blades.

Spasmatomancy - Divination of forecoming diseases by watching the twitching limbs of a person.

Spear-bearing - A planet belonging to its sect (a co-sectarian) that protects the light of its sect by hurling rays to either side of that light (either the Sun or Moon).

Speculum - A table of the data concerning the planets in a horoscope. Useful in calculating directions. Speculum of Aspects - A table of every degree in a horoscope that may be in aspect with the planets. Useful for noting transiting aspects at a glance.

Speed of planets - The usual order of the speed of planets is, from fastest to slowest: Moon, Mercury, Venus, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

Spheres - Ancient astronomers, starting at least with Pythagoras, held that the Earth was the centre of the universe and that the planets and stars occupied positions in a series of concentric, crystal spheres surrounding the Earth.

Spheromancy - Divination via a crystal sphere.

Sphondulomancy - Divination by spindles.

Spica - A quite benefic fixed star at 23 degrees 50' Libra in the year 2000, of the nature of Venus and Mars. An oasis of good fortune in the otherwise parched path from 15 degrees Libra to 15 degrees Scorpio.

Sports Champion Aspect - A term in Magi Astrology referring to one of the 17 aspects that have been found by the Magi Society to greatly enhance athletic ability. Most of these aspects involve Mars or Pluto.

Square - Major malefic (unfavourable) aspect of 90 degrees. Standard Time - Time adopted in modern time zones. This is not true local or Mean Time and must be corrected according to longitude for the accurate calculation of horoscopes.

Station - A planet makes a station when it appears motionless before reversing direction in its orbit as viewed from the Earth. Thus a planet can make a station (appear to stop and then move in the opposite direction) when going from retrograde to direct, or from direct to retrograde. Stationary planets are considered quite influential. When turning retrograde, they symbolize a reversal or delay. When turning direct, they indicate a renewal or revitalization. The Sun and Moon are never stationary and never retrograde.

Stationary - A planet in its station appears to be standing still between periods of Retrograde and Direct motion. Sun and Moon are never stationary.

Stationary Direct - A planet stationary at the position of returning to Direct Motion through the zodiac. This is considered to be among the most powerful positions for planetary influence, especially in Jyotish, or Indian (Vedic) astrology.

Stricture against judgment - A modern term for Consideration Before Judgment.

Subterraneous - Usually refers to the 4th sign from the ascendant or other horoskopos, but can mean below the horizon generally.

Succedent - Second, fifth, eighth and eleventh houses in a chart. Corresponding to the fixed signs, they lie between the cardinal angles and the cadent houses. Planets in these houses function at around 50% of their power, based on the strength of an angular placement, which is the most potent.

Succeedent house - Houses 2, 5, 8, and 11. They follow, or succeed, the angular houses.

Success Linkage - One of 10 linkages that are either Golden Linkages or Silver Linkages.

Sun Signs - The twelve traditional signs of the zodiac. The Sun Sign is the sign through which the Sun is passing at a given moment, such as the moment of birth.

Super Aspect - In Magi Astrology, one of 15 aspects discovered by the Magi Society that bestows to the native a significant advantage in achieving fame and fortune, or success in general.

Thribhaga Bala - A source of strength caused by the birth taking place in one of the 3 portions of day and night. Any planet may get this strength only if birth took place in its particular portion of the day or night. Thribhaga Bala is one of the components of Kala Bala.

Thumomancy - divination by one's own soul.

Time To Exactness - the time in days, hours, etc., before an aspect will be exact, or the time after an aspect was exact.

Timing - A method of estimating how long it will take for the matter inquired about to occur. Generally timing is estimated by the combined house and sign position of the faster primary significator involved in

the aspect which answers the question. Of the signs, Cardinal are fastest, Mutable slower, and Fixed slowest. Of the houses, Angular are fastest, Succedent slower, and Cadent slowest.

Tiromancy - is a type of divination using cheese. Divination by interpreting the coagulation, especially holes, in cheese.

Tithi/ Lunar Day - The area covered by Moon in its transit away from Sun, computed for the moment of its conjunction with Sun to its true longitude at the moment of the epoch. It is obtained by subtracting the Longitude of Sun from the longitude of Moon. A tithi is completed when the longitude of Moon gains exactly 12 degrees or its multiple on that of Sun and therefore there are 30 tithis in a lunar month.

Topocentric system - Method of house division, proposed by Polich and Page, which is capable of calculating house cusps for any place on earth. The system is said to have been derived from experience by projecting known events onto a chart, as opposed to other house systems which have been derived mathematically.

Topomancy - Divination via the shape of an area of land.

Topos - These are houses based on meaning of a particular location in the sky and not strength showing how many such occurences you will have of a given subject. Specifies that the type of house division being used is one based on whole signs.

Transataumancy - Divination based on something seen or heard accidentally. Even trifling mistakes were accepted as omens by the ancient Romans, and even today many people are apt to attribute their good fortune to chance occurrence or coincidence.

Transformed - A term referring to the changed and modified symbolisms of planets and aspects when another planet or midpoint makes an equal degree contact to the original planets or aspects.

Transit - The movement of the planets through the sky in real time. The planets moving through the sky right now are called today's transits.

Transition Period - The time between two planetary storms. The energy is usually very weak and scattered, making it hard to get anything done.

Transition Rules - You aren't going to get much done during a transition period.

Translation of Light - A planet separating from an aspect to a slower moving planet forms an aspect to another while still within orb of the original aspect. This forms a chain of influence between the three factors.

Trans-personal Planets - Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Trans-Pluto - Aka Bacchus or Persephone, this planet is postulated as orbiting beyond the outermost known planet, Pluto. It has been proposed that it rules Taurus.

Tredecile - Kepler's 108 degree aspect, which is somewhat favourable. Used in Horary Astrology.

Trikona/ Trine Houses - The 5th and 9th houses in a natal chart. Ascendant is considered both a trine as well as a cardinal house.

Trikona Dasa - A system of planetary direction in which the most important sign among the 1st, 9th, and 5th houses determine the sequence. Otherwise, it is similar to Chara Dasa. The sequence differs for odd and even signs.

Trikona, Mool - Mool Trikona position gives a strength of 90 per cent to a planet; while in exaltation, it secures 100 per cent strength; and in its own sign, 80 per cent. Mool Trikona positions of different planets are as follows: Sun: Leo 200; Moon: Taurus 270; Mars: Aries 120; Mercury: Virgo 160-200; Jupiter: Sagittarius 100; Venus: Libra 150; Saturn: Aquarius 200.

Trine - An arc of 120 degrees; the most harmonious aspect. In most cases, it joins planets in congenial Signs of the same Element. These energies combine with ease.

Tripataki Chakra - A planetary combination formed by all planets, except Jupiter and Mars, afflicting ascendant and Moon. It is an inauspicious combination leading to misfortune and frustration in life.

Triple Aspected Midpoint Crossing - this is similar to an Aspected Midpoint Crossing but is compromised of an additional 5th planet, which makes an equal degree aspect to the two non-midpoint planets.

Triple Magi Quad - In the case of longitudes, an alignment of 6 planets that form 2 Magi Quads when the 2 Quads border on each other on one side, thus creating 3 parallel lines when the appropriate pairs of planets are connected. The term triple is used because there are really 3 Magi Quads in such an alignment, the third being the large M/Q formed by the two non-bordering parallel lines.

Triplicity - An equilateral triangle superimposed on an astrological chart, each point indicating signs of the same element. There are four triplicities, representing the elements of fire, earth, air and water.

Trishamsa - One-thirtieth division of a sign, but classified differently for odd and even signs. The divisions are grouped in five categories, each having special characteristics. The ownership of these parts is assigned to only five planets, which excludes the luminaries as well as the nodes.

Trochomancy - Divination via the interpretation of wheel tracks. Tropic - The line of lattitude, approx. 23° 28' either north (Cancer) or south (Capricorn) of the equator, corresponding to the furthest point of the ecliptic. The place where the Sun pauses, then reverses its declination at the summer and winter solstices.

Tropics - The parallels of latitude about 23.5 degrees North or South of the Equator.

Tropical Signs - Cancer and Capricorn.

Tropical Zodiac - Zodiacal system based on the movements of the seasons, as opposed to the Sidereal Zodiac, which is based upon actual stellar positions.

T-square-The configuration formed when two planets in opposition both square the same third planet (and form a 'T' in the heavens). This is a challenging focal point for planetary energies.

Tuche - Greek word for "fortune". What happens to an individual in their day to day affairs, as with the lot or part of fortune.

Tula - Libra

Turbulent Aspect - An aspect that is made by the 90 or 180 degree angles. If the aspect is a Saturn aspect, then it could also be 150 degrees.

Turbulent Planetary Geometry - Planetary Geometry that is formed by only Turbulent Aspects.

Turbulent Transit By Saturn - A transit by Saturn in the sky where Saturn makes a Turbulent Angle (or a quincunx) to a natal planet. When this occurs, the native's judgment and health are impaired.

Twelfth House - Also known as the House of the Unconscious. It represents the hidden or unknown, the subconscious mind, the intangible, sleep, dreams, karma and spiritual debt. It rules solitude, confinement, fears, sorrow, secrets, hidden enemies, non-reality, institutions and charity.

Twelfth-parts - Depending upon the context, can refer to either the signs themselves or the dwadasamsa, or dodektamoria.

Twelve Super Progressions - In Magi Astrology, similar to the Super Aspect, the 12 Super Progressions refer to the12 progressions that the Magi Society has found to be most beneficial to the native in achieving fame and fortune.

Udana - Vital air that rises up the throat and passes into the head. The Buddhists consider it an expression of joy and praise.

Udyama - Strenuous or assiduous efforts; firm resolve; striving hard. The 3rd house in a natal chart is related with Udyama or personal initiative and self-exertion.

Umbilicomancy - Divination by the umbilical cord; omphalomancy.

Under duress - When a person's significator is besieged by two malefics within tight orbs, the person is said to be "under duress."

Under the Sun's Beams - Within 17 degrees of the Sun. Any planet here is weakened, though more so if combust (within 8 degrees 30 minutes). Not so important in natal astrology.

Universal - One of the three orientations where energy is oriented toward relating with the universal or transpersonal. The universal signs are Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces and the universal houses are the 9th through 12th houses.

Universal time - Greenwich Mean Time.

Upachaya - The 3rd, 6th, 10th, and 11th houses in a natal chart.

Upadana - Acquiring; withdrawal; material cause. Used in connection with assuming of a form or manifestation. Withdrawal of activities of the sense and perception from the external world and its object.

Upagraha - Minor planets; invisible or shadowy planets or satellites, e.g., Dhuma , Vyapata, Parivesh, Indrachap, etc.

Upaketu - One of the invisible or shadowy planets. It is one of the following 9 invisible minor planets: (1) Kala, (2) Parivesh, (3) Dhuma, (4) Ardhaprahara, (5) Yamakantaka, (6) Indrachapa, (7) Gulika, (8) Dyuteepath, and (9) Upaketu. They are related with Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu, respectively.

Uranian astrology - A school of astrology, founded by Alfred Witte in Hamburg, Germany, which relies heavily upon the interpretational emphasis of midpoints. In addition to traditional astrological elements, it includes as symbolic indicators eight hypothetical planets: Cupido, Hades, Zeus, Kronos, Apollon, Admetos, Vulkanus and Poseidon.

Uranian Planets - Planets postulated to lie beyond the orbit of Pluto.

Uranomancy - Divination via consulting the heavens.

In the Hindu scriptures, Vahan represents the nature of the manifesting impulse of the deity who is supposed to possess that stead.

Vaikhari - Speech in its fourth stage of articulation, the first being the stirring of air or breath, second, articulation or utterance, the third is utterance of sound or words, and the fourth, or Vaikhari, is the articulation of intelligible sentences.

Vaikuntha Loka - Heaven of gods like Vishnu, Krishna and others. In Puranic literature, it is described as the eastern peak of the (mythical) Meru mountain.

Vaishya - The trading and agricultural class in ancient India comprising one of the four categories of Varnashram.

Valid Range of Interpretations - The range of interpretations that an aspect or inter-aspect can be reasonably ascribed; the range depends on the breadth and the scope of the numerous validated symbolisms of the planets comprising the aspect or inter-aspect.

Vapi Yoga - A planetary combination formed by all planets either in Panaphara or in Apoklima houses. It makes the individual born under it find buried treasure which he does not share with others.

Vayu - Air, wind. The god of wind. One of the Vedic Trinity.

Vedanga - Constituents of the Vedas. Six in number, necessary for understanding and proper sacrificial employment of the Vedas are (i) Sikshas, the science of pronunciation, (ii) Chandas, the science of prosody, (iii) Vyakarana, the grammar, (iv) Nirukta, etymology or glossary, (v) Jyotisha, astronomy and astrology, and (vi) Kalpa, the rituals.

Vedanta - Esoteric and deeper teachings of the Vedas as propounded in the Upanishads and such other systems of thought.

Vedha - An opposition, an impediment or an obstruction. In astrology, it refers to impediments to favorable transit effects of a planet.

Vedha Chakra - A diagram which indicates if the transit effect of a planet is nullified by the presence of any other planet in any specific house.

Venus - Represents love, romance, beauty, culture, the aesthetic, affection, one's social appeal and acceptability, good taste, harmony and values.

Vesta - The Eternal Flame; goddess of the hearth. An asteroid seen by modern astrologers as significant.

Vespertine - A planet setting in the evening after sunset.

Vernal Equinox - Spring Equinox (northern hemisphere). The first degree of Aries, the beginning of the astrological year, when the Sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north.

Vernal Point - Point on the ecliptic marking the position of the Sun at the moment of the Vernal Equinox, when the Sun is directly overhead at midday along the Tropic of Cancer.

Vertex - The western intersection of the Prime Vertical with the Ecliptic.

Vertex Point - used by astrologers in the 70's, representing the inner life of the ascendant. Calculated by inverting the degree of the Ascendant (ie calculating the degree of the ascendant as if the native were born in the opposite hemisphere and calling this point the Vertex). Verticle - The prime verticle or circle of observation is the circle in which an observer stands when facing south. This circle is divided into 12 equal parts, comprising the 12 houses through which the signs and planets seem to pass obliquely in their apparent diurnal motion from east to west.

Yuddha Bala - A source of strength applied on planets that are in "war", i.e. a planet may get this when placed within one degree of longitude from another planet. Yuddha Bala is one of the components of Kala Bala.
