AstroGrid Cycle 4 Science Planning
Summary: Consolidate and Exploit
http://wiki.astrogrid.org/pub/Astrogrid/CycleFourPlanMeet20060523/cycle4planupdated.pdf
• Key Aim: engage ~400 astronomer users of the AG system by end 2006
• Provide increased access to relevant data sets
– cross match of data tables – authorised access
• Provide improved supporting documentation
• Expand the 'testbed' system with sufficient level of service

Recap: Goals for Cycle 3
• YES: Key Aim: engage ~200 astronomer users of the AG system by mid 2006
• PROBABLY: deliver real science – ~5 papers to journals – IAU!
• YES: Provide examples of one/ two step processes • PARTLY: Provide stable access to the 'common' science services
• The key 4 AG services: AstroScope, redshift maker, colour cutter, moviemaker– PARTLY: Provide increased access to relevant data sets – PARTLY: Provide improved supporting documentation – PARTLY: Expand the 'testbed' system with sufficient level of
service

Input from the AGOC
• Provide a clearer description of the exemplar science
• projects (e.g SAG cases) currently defining AstroGrid.
• Provide examples of 'simple' 1,2-step actions that an astronomer can perform with the system
• Provide more explicit list of current and planned capabilities (thus list data, tools available)
• All above points from Feb 2006 still relevant into Cycle 4

Input from the SAG
• Generate a library of simple annotated workflows
– Selecting data – Querying common catalogues – Simple use of complex tools
– Simple scripting examples
• Work with SAG on the SAG science cases– Followon from the 'AstroGrid Ten' – focus on science themes….
• Further workshops – Durham– Queue: Birmingham, Cardiff, Herts, Bristol, Cambridge

Key Data Needs for Science Themes
• 1st Priority– UKIDSS (Images + cats), SDSS DR4/5 (images/cats) Ed/JAT– 2XMM (EDR/pre-release) – aim to show at IAU in Aug 2006 JAT– GLIMPSE + C2D (Spitzer legacy survey programmes) Ed– IPHAS/VPHAS AR– Solar-B + STEREO SD
• STEREO requires models as well – run via AG infrastructure?
• 2nd Priority– FIRST & Spitzer (SWIRE, image/cats) Ed– SOHO/LASCO (@RAL), SOHO/EIT (available now) SD– SINGS AR– UVES AR
• Issues: access to large compute/disk for multiple simultaneous users (e.g. multi-λ case)?

Key Tools for Cycle 4
• 1st Priority– Cross Matcher JAT– Le Phare Ed– Suitable imaging of radar data? SD– http://astro.ensc-rennes.fr/basti/synth_pop/ AR– Montage (to create large mosaics) AR
• 2nd Priority– StarPop AR– Maths + stats of columns (c.f. Maths in TopCat)? Ed– Cloudy AR
• Tools Call– 10 applications for 2/3 tasks…dev effort required
