Keep your eyes peeled for signs of autumn Butterflies Red admiral, speckled wood and brimstone butterflies still flutter during autumn. Harvestmen Spot these arachnids on oak bark (and sometimes in your home!). Mushrooms How many different types of mushroom can you find? Webs Keep your eyes peeled for spider webs glistening in morning dew or frost. Skeletons Spotted any delicate leaf skeletons on the woodland floor? Birds Find them flocking around berry-laden trees, and feasting on the fruit. Squirrels During autumn, squirrels are busy gathering (or caching) nuts and seeds such as acorns. Owls Can you hear tawny owls calling ‘twit twoo’ to each other during the evenings? Badgers Keep your eyes peeled for old bedding left outside the sett. Galls Look out for knopper galls, spangle galls, marble galls and cola nut galls. Ivy Ivy flowers provide valuable late nectar for butterflies and bees. Look out Try sitting super still and keeping quiet – what can you spot?
