B- Bar Pilots~ Escort ships over the Columbia River Bar and up the channel daily. From the Wet Dog Café , 144 11th St., watch the tug  boats take the pilots to the ships. Bar Pilots interpretive display located on the ferry dock at the foot of 14th St. The Columbia River Bar has sunk over 200 ships and over 2000 vessels. Bird Watching~ Park yourself on the deck of the Wet Dog Café & get an eyeful of birds fly ing all around the waters edge. Watch out for seagull droppings! C- Capt. George Flavel~ One of Astoria’s first Bar Pilots and the areas first millionaire. Children’s Museum~ Located in the Upper-town Firefighters Museum on the second floor, across from the Desdemona Club. Shipping channel from the Pacific Ocean to Portland. Columbia River Maritime Museum~ Recognized as the best Maritime Museum on the West Coast. 2002 $6 million renovation. Over 44,000 square feet of interactive exhibits. 503-325-2323 Located at 1792 Marine Dr. Admission Fee Crab Festival~Astoria/Warrenton ~ Held annually at the Clatsop County Fairgrounds the last weekend of April. Over 200 booths  packed with tasty seafood treats, arts & crafts and a fine selection of wines representing Oregon’s finest wineries. Aft er the festival closes, the hot spot is DJ Dancing at the Wet Dog Café. Customs House~ The first US customs house was built in 1849 and is marked by a rebuilt replica located on Marine Dr. across from Safeway. D- Desdemona Club aka “Dirty D”~ Opened as a beer parlor in 1934, the oldest standing structure in the upper-town district, 2997 Marine Dr. Stories of men being shanghaied thru a trap door in the floor. 503-325-8540 Over 21 yrs old only. Fisher Poets Gathering~ The Wet Dog Café, 144 11th St., hosts Annual Fisher Poets Gathering. Poets from all over the

Fort Astoria~ Replica located at 15th & Exchange St. John Jacob Astor fur traders built a small fort at this site. Free to the public.Fort Clatsop National Memorial~ Located 6 Miles SW of Astoria off of Hwy 101. The site where the 33 member Lewis & Clark

I-Indians~ Our County is named after the Clatsop Indians which inhabited the area. Lewis & Clark bargained with the Indians for dugout

canoes, whale oil & blubber & other necessities.

J-John Jacob Astor Hotel~  Named after the famous fur trader, John Jacob Astor. Located on the corner of 13th & Commercial St.

Astoria’s tallest structure. (Not operating as a hotel) 

K-Kindergarten Cop~ Filmed in 1990. Starring Gov. Arnold Swartzenegger. Some footage of Astor Elementary School located at

35th & Franklin.

L-Lewis & Clark ~ Meriwether Lewis & William Clark expedition of over 450 miles through Oregon & Washington. Astoria Oregon

 being one of the western areas explored. 2005 Commemorated the Lewis & Clark Bi-Centennial.

Liberty Theatre~ Opening Night 1925. Recent $2 Million Renovation. 1203 Commercial 503-325-5922 for scheduled events.

M-Marinas~ Located at the Port of Astoria & the foot of 37th Street.

Megler Bridge~ Finished in 1966 over 4.1 miles long & is considered the longest 3 span truss bridge in the world. Connects Astoria to

Washington State.

N-North Coast~ Astoria being one of the northern Oregon Cities. Take Hwy 101 all along the coast of Oregon for panoramic views of the

Pacific Ocean.

O-Old 300~ Astoria’s riverfront Trolley. $1 per person/per ride. Runs east to 39th Street and

West to the Por t of Astoria. Built in 1913. Recently purchased from the City of SanAntonio in 2005. The trolley was rebuilt and restored 1999-2005. Catch it in front of theWet Dog Café , at the foot of 11th street.

P-Pacific Ocean~ If you can’t find it, you need glasses. The Columbia

River flows into it. Icy cold salt water that has claimed 1000’s of lives.

Port of Astoria~ Created in 1914, one of 23 Oregon Port districtsthat support the Trade & Commerce of Oregon. Each year an in-creasing number of cruise ships stop in Astoria and moor at the Portof Astoria. Office located at #1 Portway St. 503-325-4521

Q-Queen Victoria Homes~ Astoria’s East side is landscaped with 100’s of Victorian era homes.

R-Razor Clams~  Native to the Pacific Ocean. Tasty & Delicious. Try them fried at the Wet Dog Café.

Regatta Parade~ Over 100 floats & entries parade down Commercial St. for the annual Parade. Held the2nd Saturday in August. Special Regatta functions are scheduled all week-end. For more info~check withthe local Chamber of Commerce. Oldest celebration west of the Rockies.

River Walk ~ Walking path along the Columbia River running from the Port of Astoria to Alderbrook area .

S-Scandinavian Midsummer Festival~ Located at the Astoria Fairgrounds. Three days of Scandinavian tradition. Dancing,

Music, Food and colorful costumes bring the areas heritage to life. Held Mid-June each year. Beer Garden provided by Astoria Brewing Co.

Outdoor barbeque in beer garden arena provided by the Wet Dog Café.

Seagulls~ Local river & ocean scavenger birds flying on the waterfront. Look for their droppings on the windows of the Wet Dog Café. 

Sea Lions~ Large & black. Swimming in the Columbia River & hanging out on the rocks at the East End Mooring Basin located at the foot

of 37th street. Listen for their loud barks.

Shanghaied in Astoria~ Summer musical about historic Astoria which has been running for over 25 years! Performed by Astor Street Opry

Co. cast which plays from mid July-September. 503-325-6104 for tickets.& location.

Short Circuit~ Filmed in 1986~Shots of Megler Bridge, Astoria High School, Alameda Ave., West Marine Dr., Lincoln & Duane Streets.
