ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Today's feast celebrates Mary's Assumption into heaven. It is one of three feasts of Mary that are Holy Days of Obligation for Catholics in the United States. January 1 is the feast of Mary, the Mother of God, and December 8 is the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. The assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven has long been held as an important Catholic belief. However, the belief was not defined as dogma (a religious doctrine that is proclaimed as true without proof) until 1950 by Pope Pius XII. The dogma of the assumption teaches that Mary, who was without sin, was taken, body and soul, into the glory of heaven.

Once, when a first grader was asked what the feast of the assumption was all about, he answered, “It was when Mary was ZOOMED into heaven!”

Today's Gospel highlights Mary's faith. Mary's faith

enabled her to recognize the work of God in her people's

history and in her own life. Her openness to God allowed

God to work through her so that salvation might come to

all. Mary is a model and symbol of the Church. May we

be like Mary, open and cooperative in God's plan of

salvation.

LA ASUNCION DE LA SANTÍSIMA VIRGEN MARIA

La fiesta de hoy celebra la Asunción de María al cielo. Es una de las tres fiestas de María que son días de observación para los católicos en los Estados Unidos. El 1º de enero es la fiesta de María, la Madre de Dios, y el 8 de diciembre es la fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción de María. La asunción de la Santísima Virgen María al cielo se ha mantenido durante mucho tiempo como una importante creencia católica. Sin embargo, la creencia no fue definida como dogma (una doctrina religiosa que se proclama como verdadera sin pruebas) hasta 1950 por el Papa Pío XII. El dogma de la asunción enseña que María, que estaba libre de pecado, fue llevada, en cuerpo y alma, a la gloria del cielo.

Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
