PARTICIPATION IN THE DIVINE LITURGY

Please use the Divine Liturgy books that are found in the pew racks. These books contain the

Armenian text as well as the English transliteration and translation in the second section.

For your convenience, the applicable page number in the burgundy Divine Liturgy book is

located above the right door by the Altar leading to the Vestry. If assistance is needed, please

ask a member of the Parish Council. Please observe the “Arrows” in the new liturgy books.

They indicate when you should Stand, Sit or Kneel.

Parishioners are also encouraged to sing with the Choir, whose real purpose is to lead the

congregation in singing the hymns. Also join in the recitation of the Creed which is found on

pages 18 and 19 of the second section.

COLLECTION PLATE

To allow the opportunity for everyone to participate, the collection plate will be passed after

Holy Communion.

REVERENCE REQUIRED

Please be advised that, according to the tradition of the Armenian Church, members of the

congregation are strongly reminded to refrain from walking in and out of the Sanctuary while

services are in progress. You are especially reminded not to do so during 1) the Chanting of

the Gospel (p. 17; 2) recitation of the Creed (Havadamk), (p. 18); 3) the Chalice Procession,

(pg.24-25); 4) the Hymn, “Der Voghormya,” (pg. 45); and 5) distribution of the Holy

Communion (p. 49). Also, please do not chew gum or cross legs during church services and

we ask that everyone kindly turn off all Cell phones and all other such electronic devices prior

to entering the sanctuary out of respect for the sanctity of our services.

'MAS'

At the end of the Divine Liturgy, the 'Mas' or Holy Bread is distributed to the congregation.

When you take your 'Mas' you kiss it and eat it. A good custom is to take some home to those

members of the family who wanted to come to church, but were unable to.

This year on Sunday, August 16, 2015, according to the Armenian Church calendar,

the Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God is celebrated The Assumption of the Holy Mother of God is one of the five major feast days in the

liturgical calendar of the Armenian Apostolic Church (also called, Tabernacle (Daghavar)

feasts). The Armenian Church remembers The Assumption (Dormition) as is the greatest of the

three major holidays of the Armenian Church devoted to the Virgin Mary which are the Birth

of the Virgin Mary, the Annunciation, and the Assumption, which is celebrated on the nearest

Sunday to the 15th of August (August 12-18), a schedule adopted at the time of St. Nersess the

Graceful.

St. Mary fulfilled God's divine plan for mankind by becoming the bearer-of-God,

(Asdvadzadzin in Armenian, Theotokos in Greek). The term "Bearer of God" was officially

recognized as the proper term to be used by the church during the Council at Ephesus in 431. In

the Old Testament we read how the Prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled in the Virgin Mary. "And

there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse (The father of King David)." Her name

is invoked first in the intercessory prayers of the church, because she quite literally became the

connection between God and man. St. Mary also plays a central liturgical role in the Armenian

Church. Her picture with the Christ child on her knees adorns the main altar of all Armenian

churches, and daily worship services include the chanting of one or more hymns in her honor.

From her birth St. Mary was blessed by God to fulfill his divine plan of salvation. In the

Gospel of Luke 1:41-42 it states, "And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby

leaped into her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and she exclaimed with a

loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!" the

Armenian church doctrine teaches that the Blessed Mother Mary has a primary place of honor

because it was of her and by the Holy Spirit that God became incarnate (took human flesh). She

is seen as the image of humanity fully obedient to God and ultimately sanctified by doing God's

will" (p17 Bless, O Lord)

This belief was sanctioned by the church between the 9th and 12th centuries. The

earliest and most reliable written formulation of the tradition of the Assumption comes from St.

John of Damascus, who wrote that at the Council of Chalcedon in 451, the Emperor Marcian

wished to possess the body of the Mother of God. The Emperor was told however, by the

Bishop of Jerusalem that "Mary died in the presence of all the Apostles, but that her tomb,

when opened, upon the request of St. Thomas, was found empty; wherefrom the Apostles

concluded that the body was taken up to heaven (P. G., I, 96)." The raising up of Mary's body

to heaven, following the ascension of her Son Jesus Christ, is perhaps the best testimony of her

importance, second only to Jesus, in the Christian tradition. In this way the image of Mary and

Jesus side by side, which is familiar to every Armenian churchgoer, will continue to greet our

faithful now and forever and unto the ages of ages.

THE BLESSING OF THE GRAPES This ceremony commemorates the falling asleep (death) of Mary and her Assumption;

ascending into God's heavenly Kingdom. The grapes are considered the queen of fruits and the

first fruits of the Jewish harvests. "Celebrated is the person of St. Mary, the "Tree of Life" who

gave birth to the vine--her son Jesus Christ, the first fruit. Christ the vine gave His blood to us

for eternal life and in remembrance we bless the grapes, the fruits of the earth." (p.16 Bless, O

PRAYER FOR THE BLESSING OF GRAPES

O Lord God, infinite Father, uncreated, immortal and self-existent, who created all things from nothing; who on the third day of Your creation commanded the earth to bring forth various fruit-bearing plants for the needs of living creatures that feel and breathe. You also planted the elegant trees in your renowned Garden of Eden for the sustenance and enjoyment of rational creatures. You bestowed upon them your blessings, according to the Divine saying, "God saw that they were very good and God blessed them." But when men transgressed against Your command by eating from the forbidden fruit, You changed your divine blessing on the earth and its fruits to a curse, saying to Adam, "let the ground be cursed in your labors," [Gen. 3, 18] and Your judgement was just, since after the head dies, it is impossible for the limbs to live. Likewise, after man, who occupies the first place among the creatures that feel, died in sin, it was impossible for the accommodating nature of the earth to remain the same under the blessing of your life-giving word. But You manifested to mankind your hidden fatherly love when You sent Your Only Begotten Son so that He would bodily come forth as a rod out of the root of Jesse and rise as an elegant and fragrant blossom out of the immaculate Virgin Mary [cf. Isaiah, 11:1] and be presented as the fruit of life and immortality for mortal nature. While He was on the cross, You once again blessed the entire universe in accordance with Your undeceiving promise which was made to Abraham, the father of faith, that "in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed." [Gen. 22:18] If the judgement of the curse overwhelmed the prince of all and all those who were under his dominion [John, 12:31, 16:11], how much more will the sensitive nature of the creatures be again in communion with the divine blessings through the blessing of our human nature? More so than all the others, the fruit of the vine, the extracted juice from which became worthy of the greatest grace and blessing by becoming the element of the redeeming blood of Your Only Begotten Son, with which we were bought and liberated from the servitude of sin and death. Taking this in his hands in the Upper Room of mystery, he blessed it saying: "This is my blood," and with this all the fruits of the same kind received the perfect blessing. Therefore, O Lord, with the same blessing You blessed the good creatures of your first and second creations, now likewise bless the first fruits of this new year, namely these bunches of grapes, which are donated to You according to the ancient priesthood of Aaron, whereby You prescribed to the race of Israel through Moses to present to You the first bearing of all the fruits on the Tabernacle of witness, so that through these special gifts all fruits would receive Your blessing. In the same manner mix with these donated fruits Your divine and spiritual blessing, so that by eating from this fruit we who partake of it may receive in our souls the intelligible grace of Your blessing and through this act of eating we may be cleansed and attain remission from our sins and be worthy of partaking from the Tree of Life which You ordered the Cherubic regiment to protect with a flaming sword. Immortalized by this, we shall with the host of immortals always glorify You together with the Son and the All Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen.

Peace Unto All

You are blessed, O Son and Word of God, ineffable radiance of the first light, form and image of the invisible God, consubstantial with Him and co-creator of the creatures, Who spoke in word and they came into being, who ordered and they were created. For You, Who conceives and wills perfectly, made the vine, which is the weakest among the plants (of wood), stronger than the tallest trees because of the usefulness of its fruit. Moreover, considering it a symbol of Your supreme essence, You honored it, calling yourself the vine, and those who are united with You in love the branches, and Your father, the cultivator and the tiller, Who in the manner of pruners cleanses those who are fruitful in righteousness and cuts off the unfruitful, condemning them to the eternal fire. Through the prophets You showed that wine dispels sadness and is the cause of happiness, for the Father said in regard to the body that wine makes man glad, and His Son ordered to give wine to those who were sad. In the Upper Room You dispensed Your expiatory blood and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit as a two-fold pleasure-giving cup and established this as a mystery, and through your prototype Melchisedec offering bread and wine to Abraham the Patriarch. You also made this known through Noah who had been saddened by the contamination of the world as a result of the deluge and gave this to him in consolation. For Noah planted the first vineyard, as the Scriptures state, and he drank from the wine; and the just man was delighted. Although wine was given by You as a goodly gift, drinking has become the cause of evil for people because of those who make unwise use of it, as of the many other good things you created. Therefore, bless, O Lord, the fruit of the vine dedicated to the temple for the glory of your name with the first blessings, with which you blessed the cluster that was found among the bunches of grapes. Grant remission of sins, spiritual and physical well-being to those who partake of this fruit blessed by You, and allow those who partake of this with faith to share the immortal fruit of the Garden of Eden with the thief [who was crucified with Christ]. Bless, O Lord, those who donated these offerings of the new fruit and in return to this perishable fruit let them receive the joy of eternal life. Bless, O Lord, the vines and vineyards from which these bunches of grapes were picked to be blessed and were dedicated to the Holy Church. Make them fruitful and bounteous so that they resemble fertile fields. O Lord, ward off from the vineyards, from whence these dedicated fruits have come, all the calamities - hail, frosts, the southern winds and harmful insects, which come from above because of our sins, so that we, who enjoy the material things created by You in this world which you granted us to enjoy for Your glory, may deserve partaking and drinking with You from the all-bounteous fruit of Your vine stock at Your Father's heavenly table, in accordance with Your certain promise, and be worthy of honoring and glorifying the Consubstantial Trinity, the Father and the Son and the All Holy Spirit, to whom are befitting glory, power and honor, now and always and to the ages of ages. Amen.
