Universal testing machine

A universal testing machine (UTM), also known as a universal tester,[1] materials testing machine or materials test frame, is used to test the tensile stress and compressive strength of materials. It is named after the fact that it can perform many standard tensile and compression tests on materials, components, and structures.

A universal testing machine is used to subject a material sample or structure to either tension ("stretch it") or compression ("crush it") for the purposes of experimentally determining certain engineering properties or characteristics. These properties generally deal with the yield strength of a material, ultimate or failure strength or a material or structure, or the stiffness and ductility of a material.

control of the disc speed with auto shut-off of the machine at the selected number of revolutions. ] Abrasion testing to these standards is performed on materials subject to abrasive wear in service. This test method allows comparative measurements for checking the uniformity of specified products and its measured values are key parameters for the abrasive wear behaviour of rubber and elastomers in practical applications.

Page 6: assssfgfd

The test covers the procedure for testing coarse aggregates for resistance to abrasion. The machine consists of a rolled steel drum having an inside dia. of 711 mm and internal length 508 mm. The drum is rotated by a speed reducer driven by an electric motor at a speed of between 31 and 33 r.p.m. The machine is

Page 7: assssfgfd

equipped with an automatic counter, which can be preset  to the required number of revolutions of the drum. The unit is supplied without the abrasive charge, which has to be ordered separately depending on the standard in use (see accessories).

The Los Angeles Abrasion test is widely used as an indicator of relative quality of aggregates. Test measures degradation of standard gradings of aggregates when subjected to abrasion and impact, in a rotating steel drum containing an abrasive charge of steel balls. Up to twelve balls are used, depending on gradation of test sample.

Marshall Stability Test Apparatus

The test is applicable to hot mix designs using bitumen and aggregates upto a maximum size of 25mm. In this method, the resistance to plastic deformation of cylindrical specimen of bitumenous mixture is measured when the

Page 8: assssfgfd

same is loaded at periphery at 5 cm per min. This test procedure is used in designing and evaluating bitumenous paving mixes. The test procedure is extensively used in routine test programmes for paving jobs. There are two major features of the marshall method of designing mixes namely, a) density – voids analysis b) Stability – flow tests. The marshall stability of mix is defined as a maximum load carried by a compacted specimen at a standard test temperature of 60ºC. The flow value is deformation the marshall test specimen under goes during the loading upto the maximum load, 0.25 mm units. In this test and attempt is made to determine optimum binder content for the type of aggregate mix and traffic intensity.

Used for the measurement of resistance to plastic flow of cylindrical specimens of bituminous paving mixtures when tested in a marshal load frame. Test specimens are produced and tested at a speed of 50.8mm/min.The maximum load(stability) and deformation(flow) of the

Page 9: assssfgfd

specimen are recorded. Generally the test is applicable to hot mix designs using bitumen and aggregate of maximum size of 25mm. Widely used for designing and evaluating bituminous paving mixes.

how cooking became a science London, 1920

Page 20: assssfgfd

Radiation ‘New World’ H16 gas cooker, c. 1923. Science Museum/ Science & Society Picture Library. In 1923 a thermostat-controlled flue oven designed for the Radiation ‘New World’ H16 marked the greatest single advance in the design of gas cookers since their introduction. Designed by the London company Radiation Ltd, the oven enabled people, as an advertisement stated, to ‘cook anything from a single dish to a full-course dinner without attention’. This was made possible by the ‘Regulo’ thermostat which allowed the oven temperature to be controlled precisely. Gas had been used for cooking since 1837, though it was slow to be widely adopted as people feared it might be poisonous or give food a bad taste. Cooker design changed little during the 19th century, and electric ovens only became common in the 1930s, which is why the ‘New World’ H16 marked a turning point. With the introduction of temperature-controlled ovens cooking could become the exact science that we recognise today.

The temperature is controlled by a specially fabricated differential expansion type thermostat. For better accuracy and safety of the oven, Digital Temperature Controller (PEW-202) can be provided at an extra cost.

Sieves

Test sieves are ideal for use in industries including chemicals, food, fine pharmaceutical powders. Use sieves to measure particle size as part of your research or quality control applications. Sieves come in different materials: brass, stainless steel, or brass frames with stainless steel mesh. Diameters include 3”, 8”, and 12” with mesh sizes ranging from 4 millimeters to 38 microns. When stacked on a shaker, the top one generally has the largest mesh size and the bottom one the smallest mesh size. Pans and covers are available to complete your stack. Sieve shakers provide uniform motion to ensure the reproducible results you can’t get from hand sieving. Shakers are available with amplitude control and timers allowing you to standardize your procedure for reliable results. Clean your

A measuring instrument is a device for measuring a physical quantity. In the physical sciences, quality assurance, and engineering, measurement is the activity of obtaining and comparing physical quantities of real-world objects and events. Established standard objects and events are used as units, and the process of measurement gives a number relating the item under study and the referenced unit of measurement. Measuring instruments, and formal test methods which define the instrument's use, are the means by which these relations of numbers are obtained. All measuring instruments are subject to varying degrees of instrument error and measurement uncertainty.Scales are used to measure the weight of an item. To use a scale, the item which needs to be weighed is put on one side of the scale. Then, weigh stones are put on the other side. Once the scale balances (that is the indicator between the two scales is in the middle), the correct weight was chosen. There are also modern scales, where the item is simply put on the scale. Its weight can then be read from an electronic or analogue display.Weighting Scales are used to measure the weight of an item. To use a scale, the item which needs to be weighed is put on one side of the scale. Then, usually stones are put on the other side to compare the weight of the stone with the weight of the object you have chosen. If both cups are in the middle, it means that the weights of the objects are equal. If one cup is more up while the other one is down, it means that the one that is down is the heavier one. For example: If you place a small stone in one cup, and a watch in the other cup, and the cup with the watch goes down and the stone obviously goes up, it means that the watch has a greater weight than the stone.

Page 43: assssfgfd

Weighing scales are used to measure weight and/or mass of an object, reports the United States Department of Agriculture. Dozens of types of scales exist, but the simplest scale uses a beam and a pivot to balance the weight of one known object with another. More modern weighing scales use digital calibration to give a more accurate and quicker reading.

Digital weighing scaleUnited States Patent 4173263Abstract:A digital platform scale having a base and movable cover thereon with a lever system in the base converting vertical movement to horizontal lever movement, spring means connected to the base and lever to counter-balance the lever movement and a differential transformer connected to the lever system and to an electrical digital readout to display weight, an improvement is provided that disposes the spring horizontally in the base and connected to the lever system at its point of maximum movement. A differential transformer is interposed as part of the connection between the spring and the lever system and axially aligned with the spring. The transformer is an outer fixed winding in the form of a hollow cylinder connected to the readout and the inner core, connecting the spring and lever system, is spaced from the winding within the cylinder avoiding contact therewith whereby the core is the sole integral direct link of the balance system at its greatest travel for maximum sensitivity and minimum friction in the system.

A digital scale is a measuring tool that is used to measure the weight or mass of an object or substances. They are often compact, precise and durable compared to other scales like balance scale and spring scale.

A meter stick is a measurement tool that measures length in metres. The measurement is done by placing the meter stick against the object whose measurements are to be taken and the readings read from zero. The readings can then be converted in to other units such as centimetres, inches and feet as deemed convenient.

The oldest, most widely used test for determining workability. This test is used to determine the workability of fresh concrete, which would normally be undertaken at the point of delivery to ensure the concrete, is of adequate consistency for placement. The test is applicable to concrete of medium workability.

The device is a hollow cone-shaped mould. The mold is filled in three layers of each volume. Each layer is rodded with a 16mm steel rod 25 times. The mould is then lifted away and the change in the height of the concrete is measured against the mould. The slump test is a measure of the resistance of concrete to flow under it own weight.

More specifically, it measures the consistency of the concrete in that specific batch. This test is performed to check the consistency of freshly made concrete. Consistency is a term very closely related to workability. It is a

Page 51: assssfgfd

term which describes the state of fresh concrete. It refers to the ease with which the concrete flows. It is used to indicate the degree of wetness. Workability of concrete is mainly affected by consistency i.e. wetter mixes will be more workable than drier mixes, but concrete of the same consistency may vary in workability. It is also used to determine consistency between

individual batches.

A wire brush is a tool, consisting of a handle, usually wood or plastic, occasionally bone, and a brush. The brush is usually made from a large number of steel wire bristles. The steel used is generally a high carbon variety and very hard. Other wire brushes feature bristles made from brass or stainless steel, depending on application. Wires in a wire brush can be held together by epoxy, staples, or in some cases one continuous wire. Some types of wire brushes can also be used on an angle grinder or electric drill.

A spade is a tool designed primarily for the purpose of digging or removing earth and spreading the soil.[1] Early spades were made of riven wood. After the art of metalworking was discovered, spades were made with sharper tips of metal. Before the introduction of metal spades manual labor was less efficient at moving earth, with picks being required to break up the soil in addition to a spade for moving the dirt. With a metal tip, a spade can both break and move the earth in most situations, increasing efficiency.

To make the process of sieving easier and quicker, electrically operated mechanical Sieve Shakers are offered for dry sieving. The mechanical Sieve Shakers effect a more elaborate and standardised sieving action to produce accurate results and eliminate personal errors involved in manual sieving. On the basis of experience gained in the production of these sieve shakers for more than thirty years, considerable improvement has been made in the design and performance of these units. These Sieve Shakers are popularly used not only in soil laboratories but also in a number of industries where sieving is required; such as for ores, refractory materials, minor aggregates, pigments, powdered coal, soap, cement, roofing materials, plastic moulding powders and pharmaceuticals.

The new design is compact and light weight and can bemounted on a bench top. This eliminates the use of concrete foundation. Noise has been reduced considerably in the new model. A digital timer adjustable from 0-99 minutes is incorporated as an integral part of the equipment.

The Sieve Shaker can carry upto 8 sieves of 20cm dia. It is driven by a ¼ HP geared motor. The Sieve Table is inclined from the vertical axis and the direction of inclination changes progressively in the clockwise direction. In addition to the gyratory motion of the table, there is a tapping motion as well.

The extent to which a given measurement agrees with the standard value for that measurement  ¹   The ability of a scale to provide a result that is as close as possible to the actual value.  Example, if a known calibration standard weight of 100.000 grams was placed on the Scientech SP250 and the display shows 100.002 grams we could say the accuracy of the balance is 0.002 grams or 2 milligrams.  Accuracy tells how close a balance gets to the real value.  The accuracy of the scale is very sensitive to the calibration process.  It is recommended to perform a calibration at the end user facility.  If calibration is well performed, we can usually say the accuracy of the scale should be within +/- one display resolution with most scales.
