# Word study will now be used instead of spelling tests. These will include word sorts that will be designed for multiple ability levels within the classroom. One of the greatest goals of Reading Workshop / Writer’s Workshop is to encourage more independent time for our students so that they can develop these literacy skills while reading and writing about topics they are specifically interested in. These programs will help to make more authentic readers/writers through their work. !Next PTA meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 5th Mr. Neddersen plans to discuss Math Expressions. !Mr. Neddersen also provided time for Officer Fox and Officer Olivera of the California Highway Patrol’s Community Outreach Program to speak briefly about driving safely around our community and our schools. Officer Fox mentioned that they are enforcing traffic and parking laws around our campus and are writing tickets as needed in order to make the drop-off / pick-up times as safe as possible for our students. Mr. Neddersen urged parents to be patient in the mornings and at pick-up in order to make it as safe as possible for parents and students. Officer Fox said that the CHP plans to have a presence at our Walk to School Day on October 8th. He also mentioned that if parents have any traffic concerns or questions, to contact him at (714) 567-6000 or via e-mail at [email protected]. !

IV. Approval of Previous Meeting Minutes: ! A motion was made by Sandy Tweedt to approve the minutes from the September 10, 2014 PTA Meeting and seconded by Trishna Taurek. The meeting minutes were approved and the motion passed. !V. Treasurer’s Report - Anna Mohr (via Jason Schade): The ‘Checks to be Ratified’ and the ‘Deposit Detail’ reports were distributed and reviewed. A motion was made by Lesley Renken and seconded by Trishna Taurek to pay any bills between Sept. to October 2014 and to approve the budget. The motion was approved. ! Jason Schade discussed that there will be a new check reimbursement process implemented that will be a two-sided sheet so that a specific budget category can be marked off. Mr. Neddersen mentioned that check items that say “prior year expense” are items for education support/supplies, that due to the billing cycle of school districts, came in over the summer and were paid in September. !VI. Ways & Means Update - Aida Cook: ! Aida Cook mentioned that the “Dollar-A-Day” fundraiser (asking each family to donate $200 to the PTA to help fund enrichment programs at Red Hill) will be ending on Friday, October 17th. ! The goal is to raise at least $25,000 via this campaign, but they’ve only raised $13,000 thus far. There is a link online at www.redhillpta.org under the “online payments” section where you can easily pay with your credit card for the “Dollar-A-Day.” ! She announced that the 2nd Annual Adult Meet & Greet will be held on Friday, Oct. 17th at the Lost Vine. There is no cost to attend. VII. Programs Update - Christy Bianchi: ! Christy Bianchi was pleased with the outcome of the Family Movie Night held a few weeks ago. It was not a fundraiser, but she managed to cover the event costs and bring in a small profit after everything was paid. She said that Mo Bites, who catered food that night, donated $120 to our school from the proceeds too. She plans to hold Movie Night again next year. ! She announced that the deadline for signing up for the after school enrichment assemblies will be Friday, Oct. 17th. You can not sign-up after this date. There are three assemblies will be held right after school from 1:30-2:15. The cost is $10 per session or $25 for all three. See details about each assembly and sign-up online at www.redhillpta.org under “online payments” and then clicking on “after school cultural assemblies.” ! Mr. Neddersen noted that although these are paid, the PTA funds many enrichment assemblies throughout the year that are held during school hours. He highlighted one coming up in January for TK through 5th grade students called “Imagination Machine” that will have improv actors taking several of our children’s written stories and turn them into fun and interactive skits. PTA also sponsored several grade-level specific science assemblies that will be presented throughout the year. !VIII. Community Update - Sandy Tweedt: ! Although the book fair went from 5 days typically to 4 days this year, Sandy Tweedt said that sales from the fair went up 5% this year! Volunteer Amy Jensen reported that the fair netted a little over $17,000 and they were able to donate more than $4,000 in books to the library, faculty, teachers and students (which was approx. 800 donated books). Sandy Tweedt said that this was the first year there was 100% participation from the teachers, library and support staff to attend the book fair preview and to select their wish lists, etc. ! Dino Dash on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014 is the next event she is planning for. The Wednesday flag salute on Oct. 15th will include a visit from the Dino Dash mascot. Sandy Tweedt said that there is financial incentives for our school if we increase our Dino Dash registration numbers either by 25% (to get 453

(Community Update continued) !registrations) or to get 532 registered, which would be a 90% registration rate for our school (remember these registrations include those from other family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc.). If we meet the 532 registrations goal, we should be the #1 registered elementary school for Dino Dash in TUSD! She reminded everyone the importance of clicking on a Red Hill teacher’s name when registering online because that teacher will receive $6 from the TUSD Foundation for each registered person. !IX. New Business/Acknowledgements: !* Jason Schade announced that the new school marquee sign should arrive

sometime in November. * Dena Horne discussed Red Ribbon Week. It will be held October 20-24. The first

He asked for additional ideas from members for ideas to increase participation at the meetings. *Kelly Hannegan & Rebecca Walters along with many volunteers were acknowledged for their hard work at the campus/Learning Garden clean-up that was held on Sept. 26th. There is a need for additional help at future clean-ups. *Sean Sanchez discussed that recycling at Red Hill has gone up and that compared to last year. He has added cell phone recycling, which is a safe way to donate your old phone and raise potentially a few hundred dollars per phone. He also mentioned that Sports Clips off of Irvine Blvd. is donating 60% per haircut to our school. *Janelle McMahon mentioned that GoBananaz frozen yogurt near Sports Clips is still donating 20% of proceeds from Wednesday afternoons. *Krista Pruitt, head of our PTA membership” said the deadline for joining will be this Friday. We only have 205 families signed up now. We are typically one of the top PTA membership schools in the nation and she wants to keep that tradition. The $20 fee includes a school directory.
