FRIENDSASSOCIATION FOR CHILDREN

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

As I approach the end of my first full year with FRIENDS, I wish that everyone could see our two centers the way I do. We operate 12 hours every day, and our centers are full of children with boundless energy and cheerfulness that melt my heart. Their innocence and excitement is contagious!

Thus I was delighted to see our enrollment rates increase dramatically this past year—averaging 90 percent or more—which makes it clear that there remains a strong need for our services.

The success of our “graduates” demonstrates the effectiveness of our programs. Children who have been with us at least two

years start kindergarten with reading skills 2-3 levels above their peers, on average. Many of these children will come

back to FRIENDS in before-and after-school programs, where we continue to work with them to ensure their

educational success.

I could not be more pleased with the dedication and perseverance of our staff and volunteers,

as we’ve confronted real challenges. I look forward to our future with energy and

optimism, and offer many thanks to you for your generous support in

helping FRIENDS invest in the lives of our children.

THE INVESTMENT OF A LIFETIMEWhen you give to FRIENDS, you’re helping build a person.

A living, breathing, intelligent soul with limitless potential.

Someone who—with the right learning environmentand support—might someday change our community, city, nation and world.

Right now, in one of our classrooms, may be a future mayor of Richmond, world-class composer, or scientist who’ll makea groundbreaking discovery.

All of our students can be strong citizens, productive employees, and caring mothers and fathers.

All they need is a guiding hand, a strong education, and an encouraging word.

All they need is FRIENDS. And all we need is you.

SHAKA AND MYA SMART ARE FRIENDS

When Shaka Smart was invited to participate in the 2013 ESPN Infiniti Coaches Charity Challenge, he and wife Maya selected FRIENDS as their charity partner. Together, we participated in a variety of community events and activities, including the Museum District Home & Garden Tour, events with local merchants,

and a highly successful T-shirt campaign.

The T-shirt effort, the brainchild of Maya Smart, allowed the community to support FRIENDS by purchasing a high-quality T-shirt emblazoned with our logo. Together, we sold nearly 1,700 shirts and generated almost $30,000. All told, the Smart’s efforts on our behalf generated more than $100,000 in contributions this year! We’re immensely grateful for our relationship with Shaka and Maya. They have been generous with their time, talents and treasure, and are committed to helping FRIENDS invest in Richmond’s children.

A PLACE TO LEARN

We are first and foremost a place of learning. Although some of our youngest students are still babies, we expect them to learn as they grow with us. This isn’t day care and we aren’t babysitting; we’re investing time and effort in young people who we consider to be future leaders of our community.

Although our fees average 30-40 percent below standard rates, our early childhood program is Virginia Star Quality Initiative rated, with a nationally recognized curriculum and a leading-edge system for evaluating student progress. For school-age students, we offer after-school homework assistance, dance and performing arts lessons, individual music lessons, health education classes, financial literacy workshops, and social skills groups. We also tailor activities and lessons to meet students’ individual needs.

Lucy Goode Brooks, a former Richmond slave, founded FRIENDS in 1871 to serve former slave children left homeless after the Civil War. The local congregation of Quakers (who call themselves “Friends”) agreed to sponsor the orphanage and raised money in Virginia and the Northern states.

HERE FOR THE LONG HAUL

Few things speak to the quality of an institution better than lengthy service on the part of its staff. We’re pleased and proud of the fact that the average length of service on our teaching staff is nearly 20 years—some serving as many as 35 years!

Of course, the key beneficiaries of our vast experience in early childhood education are

our students, some of whom do not enjoy great stability in their home environments. Our staff is here to serve them each and every day, year after year, which gives them a sense of belonging and security. We’re like an extended family, and our students know and feel that we’re here for them and fully committed to their success.

A WHOLE-FAMILY APPROACH

Many of our families experience income challenges that require them to seek assistance from public sources. Yet anyone who has attempted to navigate the social welfare system will tell you how difficult that can be. That’s why we have licensed social workers on staff to help families find their way through the maze of federal, state and local social programs.

Our social workers are also responsible for completing screenings on all students before they enter FRIENDS’ programs and working with teachers to address behavioral and academic needs. They lead our Parent Advisory Committee, refer students to local educational agencies, and help them develop Individual Educational Plans.

“FRIENDS gave me a foundation and passion for lifelong learning, and that foundation has taken me through grade school, college, law school and into a successful career.”

THE ARTS LIVE HERE

The Music and Performing Arts program at FRIENDS offers our children enriching music and creative activities. All preschool, toddler, and Head Start students participate in weekly group music lessons. Also available are individual and group music, dance, and performing arts lessons taught by professional and college-level instructors.

FRIENDS students have a chance to show off their performing arts skills during public performances like the Winter Holiday Program featuring The Bells of FRIENDS (English hand bells), music recitals, and Preschool Graduation, where children perform numerous skits and poems expressing what they’ve learned that year. This year’s outreach activities included a dance performance at the Westminster Canterbury retirement community and a musical production of the Veggie Review at Kingdom Kids.

Linda Crafton —Head Preschool Teacher Linda came to FRIENDS as a student volunteer 38 years ago and never left. She also brought her own daughter to FRIENDS for her preschool education. “I look forward to hearing my students say, ‘Look what I did, Ms. Crafton’ to show me what they can do by themselves.”
