I. THE AERONAUTICAL SOCIETY OF INDIA

1. Brief History :

The Aeronautical Society of India was established in 1948 under the SocietiesRegistration Act XXI of 1860 with the support and patronage of PanditJawaharlal Nehru, who also became the Society's first Patron-in-Chief. TheSociety was formally inaugurated by Pandit Nehru at the Puttanna Chetty TownHall, Bangalore on the 27th of December 1948.

Over the years, the Society has grown into a major professional body with alarge number of corporate members including all major organization industriesin the field of aeronautics in the country and also some of the world's leadingaeronautical industries. Individual members include eminent Scientists, Pilots;Engineers and Technologists drawn from all major organizations like theHindustan Aeronautics Limited, DGCA. DRDO, India Air Force, IndianAirlines, National Aerospace Laboratories, Aeronautical Developments Agency.Aeronautics Research and Development Board, Airports Authority of India, GasTurbine Research Establishment, Aeronautical Development Establishment,Pawan Hans Helicopters Limited, Indian Space Research Organization, etc.

2. Organization and Management :

The affairs of the society are managed by a Council consisting of President,President-Elect, Seven Vice-Presidents, Honorary Secretary General, HonoraryTreasurer, Twelve members elected by the General Body and three membersnominated by the President to represent special interests. Two immediate PastPresidents of the Society, the Chairman of all branches of the Society and theEditor-Journal of the Society are ex-officio members of the council. The Councilis elected by the members every year at the Annual General Meeting of theSociety.

3. Objectives:

The objectives of the Society are to promote the advancement and diffusion ofthe knowledge of the aeronautical sciences and aircraft engineering and theelevation of aeronautical profession.

4. Activities :

i) The society provides a platform to professionals in the field of aeronauticsto meet and discuss issues of mutual interest.

ii) The Society organizes Seminars, Workshops and Conferences to promoteaeronautics and bring about greater awareness in this field.

iii) The Society publishes a quarterly journal and devoted to research andtechnical papers on various facets of aeronautical sciences.

iv) The Society confers a number of awards for outstanding contributions infundamental/applied research in the field of aeronautics and spaceevery year.

v) The Society conducts annual essay competitions to recognize andencourage talent amongst young scientists, engineers and students.

vi) The Society conducts examination in aeronautical engineering twice everyyear. About 40 to 50 candidates graduate every semester.

vii) The Society provides library facilities at Delhi for Delhi based student-members. A good number of Branches of the Society have also establishedlibrary facilities for local students. Student-members are advised toascertain further details from the respective Branch offices.

viii) The Society also provides multimedia and video based learning facilities atits Headquarters.

ix) The Society has instituted a number of prizes to encourage students.

x) The Society organizes On Job Training for those who have successfullycompleted Section-A and Section-B examinations. Of these, merit studentsare also provided financial stipend of Rs3000.00 pm for period up toone year.

xi) The Society encourages young scientists to participate in internationalconferences by way of presenting technical papers, by way of part financialsupport.

II. ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP EXAMINATION :

5. Recognition of the Examination :

The Society conducts Associate Membership Examination twice a year. A passin Section-A and Section- B of this examination has been recognized by theMinistry of Education, at par with a Bachelor's Degree in AeronauticalEngineering from an India University. The subject letter is reproduced below:

Candidates are eligible to appear in GATE for Post-Graduates studies at some ofthe IITs after successfully completing Section-A and Section-B. Some of otherUniversities and educational institutions have also recognized this examinationfor higher studies, and students are advised to confirm such details from therespective institutions directly.

The Engineering Council, London has recognized our examination and thosewho have completed Section A & B of the Society examination shall be granteddirect entry into Part 2 of their examination.

6. Details of Examination :

The examination, named "Associate Membership Examination" is beingconducted since year1953. The syllabus for this examination was revised,updated and approved by Govt of India vide its letter No.F.18-21/74-T-2 dated21st July1975 and has been in force since then.

The syllabus has now once again been updated and its approval obtained fromGovt of India vide letter, copy reproduced below, after having been evaluatedand recommended by All India Council of Technical Education.

On the recommendation of the AICTE, the High Level Committee of thisMinistry in its meeting held on 17.09.2004 approved the revised syllabus forimplementation. The Approval for implementing the revised syllabus is subjectto all other conditions of recognitions mentioned in our earlier letter, remainingsame.

A copy of the approved revised syllabus for Associate MembershipExamination (Section A & B), duly authenticated is forwarded herewith. Theearlier letter 16.11.2004 in this regard, may please be treated as withdrawn.

The Governing Council of Aeronautical Society has authorized conduct of theAssociate membership examination with new updated Syllabus from June 2006exam-session. As per the Rules, all student-members registered on or after01 Aug 05 will be evaluated as per the now updated syllabus. Student-membersenrolled/registered prior to 01Aug05 will be free to pursue studies and continueappearing in the examination with the current unmodified syllabus, howeverthey are advised and welcome to change over to the now modified syllabus at theearliest. The Associate membership examination of Section-A with currentunmodified syllabus will be conducted uptoDec07 session only and will beclosed there after. The Section-B exam with current unmodified syllabus willcontinue for some time and further details will be published separately.

Like the current unmodified syllabus, the modified syllabus also has two parts,called, Section-A and Section-B. Brief details of the two Sections are placedbelow. (For full details please refer to the Syllabus)

Section-A

There are ten compulsory subjects in this Section and also there is a practicalcapsule of six weeks duration on workshop practices. The compulsory tensubjects are:

i) Applied Mathematics-I (ii) Fluids Mechanics

iii) Basic Electronics (iv) Workshop Technology

v) Electrical Engineering (vi) Introduction to Aeronautics

vii) Engineering Thermodynamics (viii) Engineering Drawing & Design

Eligibility for appearing in the Section-A

A candidate who has passed Intermediate or 10+2 or Higher SecondaryExamination (12 years course) with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and50% or more marks in each : or who had passed the Studentship Examinationof the Society up to June 98 session after which examination was stopped, canappear in Section A . Candidates who have passed B. Sc. (Physics, Chemistry &Maths) with a minimum aggregate of 50% in each of the three subjects overthe three year period or Diploma in Engineering (3 years course) with 50%marks in aggregate over the three year period or Aircraft MaintenanceEngineering Course of 3 years duration from Institutes recognized by DGCA arealso eligible to appear in Section A. Airmen of Indian Air Force in any of thefollowing trades under X category are also eligible to appear in Section A.

AF/Fit. Elect/Fit. Eng/Fit. Inst/Fit. Rad/Fit. Rdo/Fit. Wpn/Fit. MT/Fit.Wks/Fit.(M) Photo/Fit. Missile/Fit(M), Missile/Fit.(L),Missile/Fit(E)

The following - categories ofAir Technical personnel of the Indian Navy are alsoeligible to appear in Section A. Aircraft Artificer. Electrical Artificer (Air),Electrical Artificer (Air Radio), Aircraft Artificer (Weapons), all 5th Class andLeading Air Mechanics, Leading Electrical Mechanics (Air Radio), LeadingElectrical Mechanics (Air) and Leading Air Ordnance Mechanics.

Candidates who possess a degree in Engineering or have passed Section A & Bexamination of any other professional institution which has been recognized bythe Government as being equivalent to a degree in engineering, can also registerfor the examination. Such Engg graduates shall be eligible to seek exemptionfrom appearing in up to six subjects of Section-A, details as follows:-

(a) Engg graduates belonging to Electrical / IT disciplines can getexemption of six subjects, namely Applied Maths-I, BasicElectronics, Electrical Engineering, Microprocessors & SoftwareEngineering, Engineering Drawing & Design, and, WorkshopTechnology.

(b) Engg students belonging to Mechanical/civil/chemical etc disciplinescan get exemption of six subjects, namely Applied Maths-I, FluidMechanics, Strength of Material, Engineering Thermodynamics,Engineering Drawing & Design, and, Workshop Technology.

(c) Graduate degree holders in Engineering and Diploma holders inEngineering are exempted from 6 week workshop Training Capsule.

Section-B

The Section-B has four different streams to choose from, and each stream has

nine compulsory subjects and one elective subject, making a total of ten subjects.The four streams are titled Aero-mechanical; Avionics; Maintenance &Production(Electrical); and, Maintenance & Production (Mechanical) streams. Acandidate can select either of the four streams at one time while pursuingSection-B. Each stream has ten theoretical subjects and two practical trainingcapsules each of six weeks duration.

Eligibility for appearing in the Section-B

Candidates who have successfully completed Section-A subjects and the sixweek training capsule on workshop practices are eligible to appear in theSection-B.

7. Registration :

a) Candidates who wish to appear in the Associate Membership Examinationconducted by the society should register themselves as Student Membersof the Society. Application form for registration should be sent on theprescribed form, which is attached with the Prospectus. The Prospectuscosts Rs. 10/-. For receiving it by regd post/courrier, please remit Rs.50.00by bank DD.

b) Candidates, who qualify for Registration/Exemption as per conditions inpara 6 should submit the duly completed application along with thefollwing:-

(i) Pass Certificate of Class-X, in original as well as a Certified TrueCopy for verification of Date of Birth and spelling/format ofindividuals name and father’s name.

(ii) Marksheet(s) and passing certificate of Class-XII/Diploma/BSc, asapplicable, in original as well as a Certified True Copy for ascertainingthe defined qualification for registration.

(iii) A bank DD of Rs 1600/- for the applicable fee plus postage chargesfor sending Registration Card, I-Card, Rules & Regulations Book andallied documents with Syllabus.

c) Certified True Copies of certificates must be signed by the student as wellas attested by a Gazetted Officer/ Head of a Recognized Educationalinstitution or a Member (full) of the Society. The name and designation ofattestor should be clearly visible and he should affix his seal/rubber stampon the document.

d) All financial payments to the Society are to be through DemandDraft/Banker's Cheque/Payorder drawn in favour of the Aeronautical

Society of India and payable at New Delhi.

e) Registration process may take about 3 to 4 weeks.

f) Candidates, whose applications for registration are received between01 February to 31 July, shall be eligible to appear in the exams fromfollowing December exam-session on wards. Candidates, whoseapplications for registration are received between 01 August to 31 January,shall be eligible to appear in the exams from the following June sessiononwards. With additional payment of late fee of Rs300.00, the last date foreach block is extended by one month, i.e. up to 28th February and 31stAugust respectively.

g) Registration Number shall be allotted to every candidate who has beenaccepted as a Student Member. Depending upon his/her educationalqualifications, he/she shall be permitted to appear in Section A.

h) The society reserves the right to reject an application for Registrationwithout assigning any reason.

8 . Examination Centers :

The Examination is held twice a year in June/December at the following elevencentres, namely: BANGALORE, CHENNAI, DELHI, HYDERABAD,INDORE, KANPUR, KHARAGPUR, MUMBAI, NAGPUR, PUNE, andTHIRUVANANTHAPURAM.

A candidate may select the centre of his choice. Change of examination centrecan be permitted provided a request for the same is received with payable fee, ofRs 200/- two weeks before the start of the examination.

9. Examination Application Form :

Application Form for the examination can be had on request, free of charge, bycandidates already registered with the Society by sending a self-addressed(9"X4") envelope stamped for Rs. 10/- quoting their registration number. Acandidate should submit a fresh application form, for every session.

The completed exam application form should be sent not earlier than 15thFebruary for June and 15thAugust for December session examinations. The lastdate of receipt of Examination Application Forms, without late fee is 10thApril/10th October and with late fee of Rs 200/- is 25th April /25th October forJune and December session examination, respectively.

10. General Information about the Examination :i) The registration is valid for a maximum period of 8 years. On expiry of

eight years, the registration will stand cancelled.ii) A candidate will have to apply for at least four exam sessions during

Section-A and at least four exam sessions in Section-B. In each such session, acandidate is allowed to take a minimum of one and maximum of four subjects ofhis choice of Section-A or Section-B as applicable.iii) The marks allotted to each subject are 100. The pass marks in each subject

are 50. A candidate who secures a pass in any subject is not expected to re-appear in that subject. However, a candidate is permitted to re-appear onlyonce in any subject to improve his performance and for this priorpermission from the HO is essential. Violation of this aspect may lead todisciplinary action against the student concerned. Higher of the two scoreswill be accounted in the final mark sheet.

iv) Result is normally declared in the 2nd/3rd week of followingAugust/February for the examinations conducted in June/December,respectively. The results are placed on website www.aesi.org

v) No certificate or mark sheet will be issued on completion of Section-A.vi) Consolidated Mark Sheet & Provisional Certificate can be obtained

immediately after successfully completing Sectiob-B. Such successfulcandidates must submit request along with bank DD in respect of arrears ofdues, if any, and four stamp size photographs. Completion certificate willbe handed over to candidates during Business Session of the Society'sAGM, usually held in Dec/Jan every year.

vii) A candidate may apply for recounting of marks of the immediate pastsession on payment of Rs. 100/- per subject to ascertain whether all answershave been marked and the marks awarded have been added correctly.Revaluation of answer books shall be undertaken only if all attemptedquestions in the answer book have not been evaluated by the examiner. Thisoption is available only till the conduct of the next session examination.

viii) Detailed instructions are available in the book titled Rules & Regulationsof the Examination, a copy handed over at the time of registration to everycandidate.

ix) For any additional information. Candidates should send a 9" X 4" selfaddressed and stamped envelope (for Rs. 5/-) for prompt reply. For reply tobe sent by registered post, the envelope may be stamped appropriately.

x) There is a maximum time limit for completing Section A & B exam of 8years from the date of registration.

xi) Candidates may appear in any additional stream after completing Section-B in one of the streams only after obtaining prior permission.

11. Private Coaching Institutions / Colleges : Recognition of :

The Society is aware that some private institutions/colleges and few otherprofessional bodies are conducting coaching classes for candidates taking theAssociate Membership Examination of the Society. The Society has a policy notto accord affiliation or recognition to any such coaching institution/college.Candidates are expected to take necessary precautions against likely disputeswith such institutions.

12. Library facilities :

The Society has Library facilities at Delhi and at some of it branches which caterto needs of only local students & members.

13. Identity Card :

An Identity Card will be issued initially with a validity of five years at the timeof registration. For renewal of I. Card the students should send a DD of Rs 100/-, two recent stamp size photographs and a self addressed envelope stamped forRs. 25/- towards sending Identity Card by Speed/Registered Post.

14. Schedule of fees :

(a) Payable fee at the time of Registration

Registration Fee : Rs. 1100.00Annual subscription for one [email protected] per year : Rs 500.00

Total : Rs 1600.00One copy of syllabus, identity card will be issued at no extra cost to a studentmember on registration. Those student members who have been removed fromthe Rolls due to non-payment of subscription for more than threeyears will pay Registration fee of Rs. 200/- and Annual Subscription of Rs.500/- for one year. Those student members currently on rolls registered prior to01 February 2002 will continue to pay Annual Subscription of Rs. 500/- onannual basis as before.

b) Payable fees on annual basis (By all student members)

i) Exam fee for Sec-A : Rs. 500/- per subject

ii) Exam fee for Sec-B : Rs. 600/- per subject

c) Payable fee on as required basis (By all student members)

i) Syllabus : Rs. 200.00 by hand

ii) Duplicate Identity Card : Rs. 100.00

iii) Recounting of Answer Books : Rs.100.00 (per subject)

iv) Duplicate session mark sheet : Rs.50.00 (per session)

v) Change of exam center : Rs.200.00

vi) Issue of Transcripts/NOC : Rs.500.00(US$20.00)(per transcript/NOC)

vii) Issue of duplicate completion certificate/ consolidated mark sheet :Rs.500.00

viii) Unsolved question paper : Rs. 10.00 (per Q.P.)

ix) Issue of duplicate admit card : Rs.100.00

Note: Postage/Courier charges of Rs. 50.00/Rs.100.00 or US$ 20.00 would beextra and payable along with request for any of the transactions at (c) above.

d) Composite fee for life membership: Rs.800.00 (payable in two installmentsof Rs.400.00 each, first, on completion of Sec. A and, second, on completion ofSec. B).

e) Special fee for use of library at AeSI HeadOffice NewDelhi and at Branches(By all student members)

i) Annual Library subscription : Rs.50.00

ii) Library security (refundable) : Rs.2000.00 (per card) (max no. ofcards to be issued : Two)

15. Unsolved Question Papers :

Question papers of previous sessions in each subject are available on paymentof a token fee of Rs.10/- per question paper. The candidates should submit selfaddressed envelope (suitably stamped) and Demand Draft of appropriate amountwhile making a request.

16. Mode of Payment :

All payments to the society should be made only by a crossed DemandDraft/Banker's Cheque. All payments should be in favour of "The AeronauticalSociety of India" payable at New Delhi. Payment by Money Order, M.T.,Cheque, Postal Order or cash is not acceptable.

17. Completion Certificate :

Provisional completion Certificate along with Consolidated marksheet shall beissued to a candidate who has completed Section A & B examination. Thecandidate should send an application form for issue of Completion Certificategiving full particulars together with requisite fee, four stamp size photographsand the outstanding composite fee. The Completion certificate shall be issuedduring the ensuing Annual General Meeting held in January every year .However, consolidated Marksheet and Provisional Certificate shall be issuedwithin one month after receipt of request as mentioned above.

II. ALLIED GENERAL INFORMATION :

18. Graduate Membership :

Candidates who have completed section A & B and have paid the first and

second instalments of Life Composite Fee shall be automatically elected asGraduate Members of the Society. For this, after issue of ConsolidatedMarksheet and Provisional Certificate, Graduate Membership will be approvedby the Governing council of the Society. The candidates will be forwardednecessary papers for their signatures and return of those papers for issue ofGraduate Life Membership Cards.

19. Prizes and Awards for the Students :i) Shri R. Venkataraman Prize is awarded for the best overall performance in

the Associate Membership Examination during the year. The Prize amountis Rs. 3000/-.

ii) Society's Prize is awarded for the second best overall performance amongstudents in this Examination during the year. The prize amount isRs. 2500/-.

iii) Indian Air Force welfare Prize of Rs. s1500/- is awarded for the bestperformance by an Indian Air Force personnel (including retired) duringthe year in this examination.

iv) Dr. Abdul Kalam Prize is Rs. 3000/-. It is shared by students who scorehighest marks in any subject of Section B in June & December session,each year.

v) Mrs. Kiran Kant Prize is awarded for best performance by a femalecandidate during the year in the examination. The prize amount isRs. 2500/-.

20. Scope / Placement :i) Candidates who have successfully completed Section A & B of the

Associate Membership examination of the Society are treated at parwith those holding a Degree in Aeronautical Engineering from anIndian University for recruitment to superior posts and services underthe Central Government.

ii) The Society's graduates are eligible to compete in the GraduateAptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for admission to IITs etc. forhigher studies.

iii) Some of the Universities in India and abroad admit our students forhigher studies.

iv) Those who have successfully completed Section A & B examinationof the Society are occupying responsible posts in HindustanAeronautics Limited, Indian Airlines, Air India, Pawan HansHelicopters Limited, Defence Research & Development Organisation,National Aeronautical Laboratories, Aeronautical DevelopmentAgency, Civil Aviation Department, various DRDO Laboratories andprivate airlines.

The Scheme is to provide on-job-experience/training in aeronautical industry,Airlines and R&D establishments and thereby to help the student members tosecure a suitable job. The scheme is open for those who have completed SectionB with minimum aggregate of 60% marks in Section B subjects. Selection ispurely on merit. The duration of the on-job-experience/training is one year andselected candidates are given a stipend of Rs. 3000/- per month by the Society.The total number of vacancies approved by the Council is limited to 20 only.
