• When looking for the right communication device, there are several components that should be considered:• Is the device durable?• The patients that have these devices are mildly or severely impaired and

need a device that can withstand their severe muscle tone and sometimes destructive behavior

• Can the device be used from birth through life?• Patients can receive these devices at a young age, so it’s important to

select a device that will fit their needs now and in the future• Is the device easy to program?• With the high quality of care that these patients require, families need a

device that is easy to program so that it can be modified based on their changing communication needs

• Does the device have a keyboard? • Without a keyboard, a device is not as easily usable since it will not have

word prediction and a way for the patient to easily type out words • Can technological support be reached within my time zone?• Since some devices are made internationally, it is important that tech

support can be reached so that use of these devices is easy for the families involved
