Students travelled from as far away as Mildura (7 hours), Hamilton (4 hours), Ballarat and many other regional centres. The boys all did their very best and each won at least 2 of their games over the day. Competing against students whose schools have chess coaches was a challenge for many students with over 270 students competing, representing 45 schools. To get to the State Championships is a fantastic effort and we must congratulate, David O’Neill, Connor Swale, Stavro Karanicolas, Max Crooke and Johnny Karanicolas. Johnny did the best of our team scoring 3&1/2 points out of a possible 9 – a very good effort! I would like to thank Mrs Voon O’Neill who drove the boys and myself to Wantirna and provided great support. (Continued on page 2) Well Done Award Winners 7th November, 2016

2017 Prep Orientation Session #3

On Wednesday, we had our 2017 Prep students attend school for their third transition session in readiness for next year. The children were very excited about their time at school and created some wonderful pictures of themselves and their teacher. Thank-you to Mrs Kerrie McPherson, Mrs Jodie Casbolt, ES staff Annmarie and Di for supporting our 2017 Prep students as well as our Year 5 teachers Mr Dan Wells and Mr Greg Eddy whose students

buddied-up with our current Prep students for the afternoon.

H.P.V.

Today, our Human Powered Vehicle Team is travelling to Stony Creek Go-Cart Track for a day of concentrated practice for their annual Lap-a-thon. The students have been seeking sponsors for their efforts today. This will support their big H.P.V. annual trip to Maryborough which sees them head off next Wednesday for 4 days of racing against hundreds of other students. The town of Maryborough grows enormously as many more support team members meet for this huge event. The students have been training for many months in readiness for the event and without the support of Mr Craig Friebe and a dedicated group of helpers, this event just wouldn’t occur. At tomorrow’s Assembly, the team members will be presented with special items to do with their trip to Maryborough. We

wish them the best of luck next week.

Remembrance Day

Tomorrow, our School Captains, Vice Captains and all our Junior School Councillors will walk to the Cenotaph at Coleman Park to participate in the annual Rememberance Day Service. Our school will acknowledge the event with a small service just before Recess while we will also acknowledge the day at our morning Assembly. Unfortunately, due to dwindling numbers, our local RSL Sub-Branch is unable to have members conduct a service at our school Assembly tomorrow morning, thus our participation in other ways tomorrow, including the Korumburra town service at the Cenotaph at

Coleman Park.

Student Placement 2017

At this time of the year we are heavily involved in planning for next year and making decisions about our class structure and the placement of teachers. Although we have not yet formally determined our class structure or which teachers will be in which classes, we do however at this time of year invite written requests from parents regarding class placement. Any such requests need to be made on sound educational, social or emotional issues and must be in writing. It is not appropriate to make requests for individual teachers, particularly as teachers have not yet been assigned to

classes.

(Continued from page 1) There are many factors to consider and it is usually not possible to accommodate all requests. Be assured, however that each and every factor in the decision as to where a child is placed next year is given our utmost attention and teachers take great care in making

these decisions.

Any requests for class placement are to be made in writing and addressed to the Principal and marked ‘Confidential’. The specific content of any such letters will be kept in the strictest confidence but the intent of the request obviously will need to be discussed when class lists are generated. Any parents who may have concerns about their child’s placement for 2017 could also make an appointment to speak to either David Gray or myself. The opportunity for parent input for 2017 is only available for a brief period (all requests must be in by tomorrow, Friday November 11th ), as there is a lot of time, effort and consideration put in by

teachers to arrange appropriate class groups for the following year.

Repeats

Could parents also note that if they are contemplating having their child repeat a year, they MUST discuss such matters with their child’s class teacher. These matters are only carried out if there are

very strong educational reasons for doing so.

Exact Numbers- Enrolments and Planning for 2017

At present we are heavily involved in planning for the 2017 start to school and need to have accurate figures on how many students will be enrolled. Therefore we are asking any parents who know that they will be moving prior to the start of the 2017 school year to let us know so that we may base our planning on accurate figures. It is also important that any parents intending to enrol a new Prep student please do so as soon as possible as again we need to have

accurate figures for our planning.

Semester 2 Reports

Teachers are currently assessing students on their academic progress in preparation for the students’ Semester 2 reports. This process is very time consuming and the teachers do a very thorough job to ensure the children’s reports are an accurate reflection of their academic, social and emotional progress this year. I know that you will enjoy reading them when they are made available around

December 16.

Spot Mr Gray’s Spelling Mistake

Good luck spotting my very easy mistake in this report. Please let

me know if you spot my ‘intentional’ spelling mistake!

Sports Uniforms

As the year is coming to an end we are still asking for students to return any school sporting attire that they may have at home. There are still

many items missing so please check your cupboards.

Shelley Snooks

PE Coordinator

Some of the Year 4s are very excited to be travelling to Leongatha to play in the Kanga 6 Competition. This is our third try at completing this event, hopefully the Weather is on our side on Monday 14th of November. All children competing on the day are asked to bring hats, refillable drink bottles, lunches and snacks for the day. Sunscreen is a very good idea as well. No money is needed on the day as there is no canteen available where we are playing.

Bike Ed will be starting shortly. In Week 8 the children will need to be ready for Bike Ed. They will be able to bring their bikes to school and keep them locked up in our bike shed over-night if need be. Bike Ed will run over Weeks 8, 9 and 10, on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week. Stay tuned for more information about this program. It would help a great deal if the children were to have a working bicycle and an Australian Safety Standard helmet for the program.

The Year 3s have been working on a Poetry unit of work which has involved using descriptive language to create pictures in the reader’s minds. Many really good poems have been written by the children and are on display in the Middle Dept. Gallery. Over the last couple of weeks the children have had the opportunity to reflect and discuss their camp experiences and have completed maps and diagrams of the camp.

Both year levels are presently involved in preparing the children to take the next steps into Years 4 and 5. Much discussion is being held in regard to this big step the children are about to make.
