5. The Principal APZ Public School Udyog Vihar Gurgaon 9th September, 20xx Sub: Request to start a course in martial arts Sir With due respect I would like to say that today

there are many notorious men wandering here and there. We have to meet with the insulting remarks passed on by some of them when we go to the market or shop. Especially girls are the sufferers of such remarks. We often ignore their remarks and go on only because we know that we are not able to retort them.

4. ARTICLE WRITING1. A Good Citizen

A good citizens is one who tries to work for the greatness and glory of his country. He is faithful to his country and isreadytosacrificeeverythingforthehonouroftheland. He must be law abiding and must respect the traditions of his country. He should make all possible efforts to remove the social evils which are the bane of the society. He must live in peace with his fellow citizens and help the state against all criminals and law breakers. He is not blindly conservative and he is progressive in his outlook. A good citizen must be committed to the high ideals and work for the betterment of his country. He should work for the unity in the country and does not do anything which might harm the solidarity of the country. He knows that if his countrymen are not united, the nation shall face danger from other countries hostile to us. He is kind and sympathetic towards everyone. He respects this rights and privileges of others. He does not do anything which might have bad effect on others. He is honest and diligent and works for the good of his fellow citizens.

2. The Place of Women in Indian SocietyIn Indian society, women have been given a better position than that of men. We can see their presence in

every walk of life. Ranging from topmost constitutional position of a prime minister and president to constable and metro driver, they have marked their presence. Nowwomenarepoliceofficers, judges, bankmanagers, armyofficers, pilots, etc.Theyareholdingpositionsof responsibility in various spheres of life. They are successfulinthefieldofbusinessandcommerce.Moreand more women are coming out of the four walls of their houses. Literacy rates in women have witnessed a sharp rise during the post-independence era. But there is no deying the fact that the rise in social and economic status of women has added to their burdens and responsibility. They are still slaves as they have to do double duty—as employed women and as working housewives.Despiteallachievementsandprogress, women still have to depend on male members of the family for their protection during different phases of their life. At times they have to depend on their father. Then there are husband and again sons. They are not given freedom to take the decision of their life. In our male-dominated society, women are still regarded as inferior to men. Therefore it is the crying need of the hour that women should awake and arise against their exploitation.

3. The Importance of Moral EducationIn our country the introduction of a new education system is essential which must be in tune with our major values of national tradition and integration. This system can only nourish and strengthen our national consciousness. Human actions are judged as good or bad right from ethical point of view. These judgments are always determined by the common moral standard of our society. In a nutshell, morality means honesty of characters, fairness in attitude, absence of evils like hatred jealousy, greed, telling lies, etc. This ultimate objective of education is to inculcate these human values in the students.Moral education can be given through value education curriculum by all boards and universities. At school level, the syllabus should include folk tales, stories of patriotism, biographies of great men, poems, parables providing valuable lessons for the student. As character is necessary for individuals, it is also necessary for a nation. A nation cannot make progress if it has lost its character. Thus introduction of moral education from grassroots to university level is very necessary.

4. Environmental PollutionThe introduction of harmful pollutants into the environment is called environmental pollution. It has hazardous effect on the natural world and on the activities of living beings. The industries all over the world that brought prosperity and affluence, made inroads into the biosphere and disturbed the ecological balances. The pall of smoke, the swirlinggases,industrialeffluentsandthefall-outofscientificexperimentsbecameconstanthealthhazards,polluting and contaminating both air and water. The smoke emitted by vehicles using petrol and diesel and the cooking coal also pollutes the environment. The contaminated water that we drink creates a number of incurable diseases.Air-pollution may cause severe lung-diseases, asthma, brain-disorder diseases, etc. Soil-pollution may have negative effect on farm output ratio. Noise-pollution causes deafness, tiredness, and mental losses. In order to deal with environmental pollution, the Government can at least see that future factories are set up at a distant place, an industrial complex far awayfromtownship.Deforestationshouldbestoppedandforestryshouldbedeveloped.DischargeofFactorywastes in rivers should be banned.

5. Meaningful Use of Leisure TimeLeisure implies free or unoccupied time, when there is freedom from the demands of work or duty. Today people live under constant stress and demands of modernity. As a result, they are prone to physical and psychological problems. It is essential to spare some time from a mechanical routine and spend this time to rejuvenate the mind and the body.We can utilise our free time in a variety of ways. Reading is one of the most popular free time activities. A wide range of subjects and the existence of well-maintained libraries has made reading a very rewarding and affordable activity. From simple entertainment to highly specialised discourses, reading invariably contributes to one’s knowledge and helps widen one’s perspective. Other common activities are music, gardening, carpentry, cooking, etc. One can also choose from activities which are directly relevant to the society, like special work, caring for abandoned and stray animals, caring for the environment, etc. Activities in the areas enumerated above impart s sense of achievement besides giving meaning and purpose to life. Activities like carpentry,

painting and clay-modelling help satisfy the creative impulse in many an amateur artist. Besides, we should spend some time in socialising. It is a healthy activity and promotes goodwill and mutual understanding among people. We should play outdoor games also. It has the advantage of catering to physical fitness and thus helping to develop a healthy attitude towards life.

6. Disaster ManagementThe term 'disaster management' refers all aspects of preventive and protective measures, preparedness, and organisation of relief operations for mitigating the impact of disaster on human beings and socio-economic aspect of the disaster prone areas. We can divide the whole process of disaster management into three phases: impact phase, rehabilitation and reconstruction phase and integrated long term development and preparedness phase. There are three components of impact phase : forecasting of disaster, close monitoring of agents causing disasters and management activities after the disaster has occurred.Inordertoforecastaboutflood,oneneedstostudy. Approach of cyclone can be tracked and monitored by satellites. Then early warning and evacuation efforts may be made. Close monitoring of agents responsible for disaster can help deployment of teams to help evacuation and supply of goods, clothing and drinking water.Disasterleavesatrialofdeathanddestruction.This will require medical care and help of various kinds to the affected people. Under long term development phase preventive and precautionary measures of various kind should be implemented.

7. Population HazardThere is no denying the fact that the rate of population increase has gone down, but the balance between the optimum population growth and a healthy nation is far to be achieved.Ignorance, illiteracy, unhygienic living and lack of proper recreation are the main causes of population hazard in India.People, themselves must realize the merits of small family. They should be encouraged to adopt preventive checks—checks that control the birth rate. Religion also adds to the growth of population. Some communities consider any mandate of statutary method of prohibition to be sacrillious. India, being a secular state, cannot exercise any check or restraint on religious grounds. The importance of a higher standard of living should be inculcated in the mind of the people. The desire

for better living conditions automatically works as a deterrent to heavy increases in population. It restricts the population explosion and thus tends to keep high theefficiencyofourexistingpopulation.Educationatthe grass root, more equitable distribution of the natural wealth, restriction on religious fanatics that would damage the country’s economy by unnecessary births, These measure alone can bring about a kind of effective control over the population problem.

8. Work is WorshipThis is an oft saying proverb that work is worship, which means there is no better way to worship God except to be hardworking. Man owes all his greatness to hard work. Hence, it is the root of all success. There is no alternative of hard work. Today man has conquered nature, he has set foot on the moon, he has travelled in the space, he has invented so many life saving drugs—all became possible because he never avoided work. We seewonderfulprogressinthefieldofagricultureandindustry.God also gets impressed and helps and cooperates only those who are hardworking and sincere. God does not love being worshipped by a person each second. He wants that a person works hard. So, it is not useful if we worship God all the time and do not work at all. Some useful people who believe that it is luck that plays asignificantroleinanybody'slife. Thus, theyavoidwork and wait for the miracles, which according to them must occur in their life and consequently they would get all those things which they wish for. But the reality is that no such miracle happens particularly when we don't work.

9. Our National FestivalsIn our country people of different religions, regions and cultures live together with peace and harmony. India is worldwide known for its cultural diversity and colorful festivals. Apart from these festivals, we also have nationalfestivalssuchastheIndependenceDay,theRepublicDayandGandhiJayanti. We celebrate Independence Day to mark theindependence of India. India became independent on August 15, 1947, after the British left the country. Since then, August 15 is celebrated as the Independence Day.Onthisday,variousformaleventsincludingflag-hoisting and march in all states, districts, panchayats, schools, colleges are organized to commemorate the day of freedom. The Prime Minister of the nation hoists the tri-colornationalflag(Tiranga)attheRedFortandaddresses the nation from its rampart. We celebrate Republic Day on January 26 tocommemorate the adoption of our Constitution. As per the records, the Constitution of India came into force on January 26, 1950 by replacing the Government of

Every year, this auspicious occasion is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. People across the nation offer prayer services and tributes to Gandhiji on this day. Various cultural programmes showcasing Gandhi ji's life and struggle for independence are organized, at school, colleges, government and private organizations, etc. Also, different types of competition, such as essay writing, painting etc are organized to remember the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.

10. Indian FarmersIt is indeed a matter of shame for us as the food producers in our country have to die out of hunger. India is mainly an agricultural country. Agriculture is the backbone of our economy. The farmer is an important part of agriculture. It is the hard work of the farmer which brings prosperity in the country. The farmer has to lead a tough life. He gets up early in the morning. He takes his plough and oxen and goes tothefield.Hiswifeandchildrenalsohelphiminhiswork. His routine does not change even in biting cold. Thefarmerremainsbusyintillngthefields, sowingseeds and reaping crops throughout the year. The farmer takes great care of his crops and dreams of good crops. Sometimes adverse weather condition causes severe harmtocropsintheformofdrought, floodoruntimely, uneven rains. In spite of his hard work, farmer has to live in a miserable condition, when his crops fail. They have to borrow have money from the moneylenders at a high interest rate. In case of the failure of his crops, he becomeshopeless.Itbecomesdifficultforhimtopayback the money. Sometimes he takes the drastic step of suicide. We need to be sensitive towards farmers. The governmental and non-governmental organizations should come forward and make them aware of the latest technologies, programmes and policies. Our nation can be a prosperous one only when our farmers are prosperous.

dear friends!Travelling is not only recreative, but also an educative activity. Travelling also has a different cultural value. We come across all sorts of people during travelling. People in various countries have different appearance, manners and beliefs. When we go and see them, we compare their lifestyle with our own. This broadens our outlook and sympathy. If sympathy develops between the peoples of two countries and there will be no war between them. Thus, travelling can reduce the fear of war too.A person who does not travel gets no chance to come into contact with other and they remain prejudiced against all their beliefs. There is yet another advantage of travelling also. A traveller when visits other country, understands new things. He moves about with open eyes and open mind. Helearnstobeaminuteobserverofthings.Thisfindshim in good state of life.Another value of travelling to a person is that we learn to be patience. We have home and go out. dear friends! It is no wonder when a school boy expresses joy when a holiday arrives. All students eagerly wait for holidays.Holiday brings delights to the students, because holidays provide them recreation and rest. Holidays remove the seriousness of study and examination from the tender minds of the students.

Generally we pass our time by visiting our friends, by reading stories visiting cinema, theatre and circus etc. Such activities enhance our spirit for further study. Therefore, holidays are very important. There are different kinds of holidays. Sunday is a regular holiday after six days of work. There are other holidayssuchasIndependenceDay,RepublicDay,andsoon.HoliandDiwaliarefestiveholidays.Dussehra,Christmas and Summer vacations are long holidays. We may engage ourselves in developing our hobbies. We may play games, may collect rare photographs or may play on musical instruments. dear friends! The rising population of India is one of the major problems. The present population of India is nearly 1.3 billion people. It is true that big population of India provides large work-force resources which, if properly utilized, can highly beneficial for the economic prosperity of the country. In our country, a large number of people are poor and illiterate. Their basic need are not being met. The abnormal population growth is one of the principal

causes of India’s poverty and very low standard of living for people. Efforts are being made in India for improving the economic condition of people but it can bear no fruitful result if population grow unchecked. The national activities in free India are directed to the task of providing adequate means of livelihood to an increasing number of people through an integrated development of agriculture, trade, commerce and industries. The schemes adopted for this purpose cannot materialize unless the population problem is tackled satisfactorily.Overpopulation weakens the economy in many aspects. The increasing pressure of population on natural resources will retard the economic progress and minimize the scope for social services in the form of education, wealth, housing, etc., To check population growth family planning should be adopted by the people after the birth of two babies.6. Good morning respected Principal, teachers and my

dear friends!Having good friends is a matter of good fortune for a person. The word friend bears its great meaning only to those who can understand the greatness of its meaning. Friendship needs to be cherished and built up for many years with much care. Friends come and go but with the some precious friends, we shall live our lives happily. In order to be a good friend one should be a good listener. If your friends feel that you do not listen or have any interestintheirlives, theywillnotconfideinyou.True friends should always be compassionate. They should be able to sympathize regardless of whether or not they agree with the crisis their friends are facing.Good friends should always be loyal. A good friend should never betray you in any way, talk about you behind your back. Good friends should be trustworthy. You should have such friends to whom you can tell all your secrets. Good friends should always be supportive. You should have friends that you can be sure that they will stand behind you regardless of the situation or problem that you are facing. A good friend should be reliable.Thank you7. Good morning respected Principal, teachers and my

dear friends!Playing aggressive video games develops aggressive thoughtsamongstchildren, whichisreflectedintheirbehavior as well. This might not be a good sign, since we do not want our children to be more verbal and aggressive with their peers. Spending too much time on video games affects the studies of children as well. Lack of concentration and focus is evident amongst children who are crazy after video games. Video games encourage sedentary lifestyle. Children may develop poor eating habits and unhealthy lifestyle.

Children must spend time by playing both indoor and outdoor sports. Elders should encourage children to participate in outdoor activities as well, rather than sticking to video games all day long. Being able to monitor and control the amount of time your kids spend on video games is the key to restrict the negative impacts of video games. Make sure that you expose your children to the right games with limited time. So taking all the above-mentioned negative effects of video games into consideration the video games must be banned.Thank you8. Good morning respects Principal, teachers and my

dear friends! To begin with, people take smoking as a hobby which soon takes the form of addiction. Tobacco smoking is not less than an epidemic in the youth of this country. Since we see our favourite actors smoking a cigar or a cigarette in movies and shows we tend to imitate it.Nicotine addiction hampers one’s health as well as degrades the biotic and abiotic environment and poses a huge threat for the surrounding non-smoking communities. Tobacco smoking in any form is not only injurious to health, but also life threatening activity. It directly injures our lungs and other respiratory organs. Smoking causes various respiratory disorders like, asthma and lung cancer. It also affects the heart functioning and results in to heart attack, coronary heart disease, swelling and bursting of blood vessels and various neurological disorders.Smoking not only harms the addicted person but also affects other people as passive smokers. The children and infants of a family are especially at risk from it.Life is the most precious gift given to everyone which remains unnoticed until our own unwanted habits become the reason for its degradation. Fast food includes fried food with little nutuitional value. It doesn't take long for the calories and fat to add up. Most fast food items are very high in sodium andcholesterol.Thesemealscontainverylittlefiber, vitamins and other nutrients the body needs to properly function.According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), fast food consumption is strongly associated with insulin resistance. This greatly increases an individual's risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The NIH also explains that fast food consumption may lead to obesity. One study found that a person who eats fast food at least two times a week will gain at least 10 pounds of extra weight.A poor diet like one obtained from fast food often leads to high blood pressure. In turn, high blood pressure is the leading risk factor for stroke. According to Corporate Accountability International, one-third of cancers are related to poor diet. This is often paired with the fact that obesity is closely linked with cancers of the colon, kidney and esophagus.Children who eat fast food regularly have a higher risk for developing asthma, hypertension and high cholesterol. Besides, it may lead to improper growth and development in children and teens. In fact, diet is one of the main factors that contribute to proper growth and development. So fast food must be avoided as much as possible. 11. Good morning respected Principal, teachers and my

dear friends!Electricity, public parks and grounds, hospital, libraries, government offices, etc are the examples of public properties. These are all built with public money that is from the taxes we pay. And the government is responsible for maintaining this property.

It is also the duty of people to help the government in maintaining them. If we do not use these public amenities properly or destroy them, it will not be easy to replace them. Some people do not use railway toilet properly. They throw garbage on the road and spit on it while walking. Before doing so they must think that other people have to suffer because of this antisocial behaviour. It has also been seen that telephone booths, post offices and letter-boxes are damaged. Benches are stolen from the parks and water sources contaminated, causing numerous problems to others. We should think that we are harming overselves as well as the progress of the country. We have no right to destroy it or use it recklessly or steal it. We must show the quality of good citizen by using the public property as carefully as we use our own things. Its misuse causes inconvenience to everybody, including ourselves. We must develop a sense of cooperation in having a comfortable and happy civic life. Thank you

Against the motionGood morning honourable judges, Principal, teachers and my dear friends!I,Karuna, standbeforeyoutospeakagainstthemotionthat ‘cinema leaves a bad impact on growing children. No movie is bad in itself. It is up to us what we learn from a movie. A movie is always displayed with a good message. If any movie conveys bad message, it would not be permitted to be displayed publicly by the Central BoardofFilmCertification.ActuallyitisobligatoryforeachmovietobecertifiedandpermittedbytheCBFCto be worth displaying publicly and the movie conveys a good message. In movies, we see the actions of actors, actreses and villains. But we should imitate the actions of actors or actresses not villains. Actors often help the weaker. We should learn it.Movies also teach us that even underprivileged may have extraordinary talent. In the movie Slumdog Millionaire an 18-year old orphan from the slum of Mumbai answers all questions except for the last one to win 20 million in the contest who want to be a Millionaire? So, it is wrong to say that movie has any bad impacts on children. But it all depends on us what we learn from a movie.Thank you2. For the motionGood morning honourable judges, Principal, teachers and my dear friends!I, Surbhi, stand before you to speak for the motion that ‘PunctualityistheKeytoSuccess’.Punctuality enables us in better time management, time discipline and it projects and presents our personality positively to others. It indicates how much concern and respect we have towards others to whom we have given your appointment. It is like valuing others and their time and sends right signals for others. A punctual person always manages his/her time properly. When people maintain punctuality, work can be executed smoothly and successfully. If people don’t stick to deadlines, they tend to procrastinate culminating into delays and stress. If we are punctual we can avoid stress and anxiety and gain respect among others. If we waste one minute of our time we are wasting one minute of our life. In a nutshell, punctuality saves our precious time as well as others. We command respect among all. We will have peace of mind as things roll out as per the schedule. Finally, we can be in the good books of all. We will have peace of mind as things roll out as per the schedule. Everyone will be ready to show us the right path. Thus punctuality it is the key to success.Thank you.

Against the MotionGood morning honourable judges, Principal, teachers and my dear friends!I, Akshita, stand before you to speak against the motion that‘PunctualityistheKeytoSuccess’.Punctualitymeans doing our work at the scheduled time or before. We have a great deal of work to be done right from our childhood. If we do all work at their scheduled time, we don’t have spare time to play or take sound sleep. Our life would become restless. We will always be under stress to do something or the other. By dint of our punctuality, we will certainly achieve success. But life without fund, amusement, play would be boring and dull. This is what the extract ‘what is the life if full of care, we have no time to stand and stare’ from the poem ‘Leisure’ by William HenryDanessuggests.Soinmyopinion, weshoulddoour work as per our convenience. We should not do any work in such a way that it creates tension for us. Life is the most valuable gift given by God to us. We should live it happily. But we should must do all work that is essential to do, if not today then tomorrow.Thank you3. For the MotionGood morning honourable judges, Principal, teachers and my dear friends!I, Neha, stand before you to speak for the motion that ‘Recreation is Good for Health’. This is an oft saying proverb ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’. Indeed, recreation is essential for our well being. For recreation, we participate in indoor as well as outdoor games. In both the cases, we spend our time with our friends or relatives happily. If we live happily many diseases cannot catch us. Playing outdoor games like football, cricket, etc. is a good exercise which keeps us fitandstrong.Italsolowersourbloodpressureandmaintainspulserates.Thephysicallyfitpersonislessprone to injury and less likely to experience depression. Recreation like playing ludo, chess and cards provide us with the opportunity to expel our energy.Thank youAgainst the MotionGood morning honourable judges, principal, teachers and my dear friends!I, Tarun, stand before you to speak against the motion that ‘Recreation is Good for Health’. Recreation cannot always be good for health. Sometimes recreation proves to be harmful to our health. For instance people play cards sitting together for hours. It makes them lazy. They don’t want to do any work. Besides such people may catch some diseases. They may become the victims ofobesity.Diabetes, highbloodpressuregastricandheart diseases.

So, we cannot say that recreation is good for our health but it may also be bad for our health.Thank you4. For the motionGood morning honourable judges, principal, teachers and my dear friends!I, Harshil, stand before you to speak for the motion that ‘Women should Avail Equal Status in Society’.It is fact that women in India have made a considerable progress in almost seven decades of Independence, but they still have to struggle against many handicaps and social evils in the male-dominated society. Many evils and masculine forces still prevail in the modern Indian society that resists the forward march of its women folk. Social rights, political rights, economic stability, judicial strength and all other rights should also be equal to women. But only men cannot be held responsible for such discrimination. Women are also responsible for it. They should come forward to take their equal rights. They shouldfightalltogetherfortheirequalstatusinsociety.Only then equal rights will be given to women.Thank youAgainst the Motion(We should not speak anything against the motion.)5. For the motionGood morning honourable judges, principal, teachers and my dear friends.I, Aryan, stand before you to speak for the motion that ‘TelevisionhasaBadInfluence’.Todaymostofthe children are glued to television after school time and completing their homework. They watch cartoons, serials and movies on television. They try to imitate the stunts displayed in the programmes as their mind is underdeveloped. As a result, they hurt themselves. They also imitate the dialogues and dressing style of actors/actresses. Sometimes, children start insisting on having the dress of the new fashion, as shown in movies.Besides, they spend their most important time in watching television instead of doing some formative activities. It promotes laziness also.Thank you

Against the MotionGood morning honourable judges, principal, teachers and my dear friends.I, Heena, stand before you to speak against the motion that‘TelevisionhasaBadInfluence’.Theprogrammesdisplayed on television are the sources of gaining knowledge. Children learn many things by watching differentprogrammes.OnDiscoverychannel, theylearnabout different kinds of animals and places. They also

learn how to deal with different situations as shown in programmes. They can improve their communications skills by watching English Movies and other English programmes like news on BBC World. Besides, children learn moral values displayed in different programmes. Children also learn good etiquettes and well manners from the programmes.Above all, people can gain a lot of general knowledge by watching national and international news.Thank you6. For the motionGood morning honourable judges, principal, teachers and my dear friends!I, Neha, stand before you to speak for the motion that ‘Cellular Phones should not be Allowed to Children’. Today cellular phones are not used only to talk to each other but they are used for many other purposes also. Children are not able to differentiate between right and wrong. They spend most of their precious time which should be devoted to study in chatting with one another. They spend a lot of time in playing games on mobile phones. They spend too much time in reading and sending messages on WhatsApp. As a result, they are unable to concentrate on studies.Sometimes they even misuse mobile phones. They start watching those clips and videos on mobile phones which must not be watched by them. Besides, children even take cellular phones to school with them and start chatting with their friends even when the class is going on . It causes distractions for students as well as teachers. So, cellular phones can cause a big obstacle for children’s development and must not be allowed to children.Thank youAgainst the MotionGood morning honourable judges, principal, teachers and my dear friends!I, Bhavesh, stand before you to speak against the motion that ‘Cellular Phones should not be Allowed to Children’. The use of cell phones is not limited to talking or chatting with one another. They can be used for a lot of purposes. The parents of every child are not able to provide their child tuition and they do not have even time to give their child. In this case, a cell phone plays asignificantroleforachild.He/Shegetsolutionstoanyproblems on mobile phones. And he/she is not deprived of gaining knowledge on any topic. Parents may talk to their children anytime in case of a family emergency. Cells can also help parents know where their children are after school. Thus in my opinion there is no harm in allowing cellular phones to children.Thank you

7. For the motionGood morning honourable judges, principal, teachers and my dear friends!I, Himanshu, stand before you to speak for the motion that ‘Stalls of Fast Food in and Outside the school campus should be Banned’. Fast foods include fried food with little nutritional value and hence they are spicy and tasty. The students during the recess or after the school time, often eat fast food sold on stalls in and outside the school campus. Their mind is not so developed that they can know the bad impacts of eating these foods on their health. Besides they have too much calories and fat, sodium and cholesterol. So keeping in mind the bad impacts of eating fast foods on health, it would not be wrong if stalls of fast food in and outside the school campus are banned.Thank you8. The major productsaretimberandfirewood.Theseareusedforindustrial and fuel purposes.Forests provide raw materials for pulp, panel products, wood-based industries. Forests are also a source of a number of minor but important products like bamboo, canes, grasses, essential oils, lac, resins, fatty oils, fats, gum, tanning material, dyes, etc.Apart from the above, a number of medicines are prepared with medicinal plants. 3. Hostel Life is a Boon for Students

Good morning respected Principal, teachers and friends!

I feel exalted to have an opportunity to speak in favour of the topic–Hostel Life is a Boon for Students.

As far as I think living in a hostel has several advantages. A student gets full academic environment around himself. Hostel is a place where students get all round development. They become aware of the valuesofpunctualityanddiscipline.Hostellifefillsthem with a sense of responsibility. It teaches them to be helpful and cooperative. It broadens their outlook by moulding their attitude towards life. It teaches them to be caring to their fellow students. The students living in hostels are comparatively more tolerant. They do every work at proper time. In this way, they learn to obey rules. One who gets a chance to live in a hostel, is really fortunate. He gets so many friends at the same time. It is good to live together with many students under one roof. It is really a boon.

Even I had planned how I would enjoy the tour in AC bus with our classmates. When I asked my father why he could not give me this amount, my father told me that my grandfather is suffering from Chikunguniya and it is more essential to get him treated by a doctor than giving me some money. So I think he did not do so deliberately. He did it under a compulsion.

20th April, 20xx The Editor The Times of India NewDelhi Sub : How to check problem of begging Sir, Through the column of your esteemed newspaper,

I would like to mention a few points on how the problem of begging can be checked in our country.

Begging has grown at an alarming rate in India. It is estimated that half a million people in India are beggars. The government, many organization, activists claim that many measures have been taken to abolish begging and it has been successful to a certain extent. But the trend of begging still continues. We are also responsible for it. We, as Indians are very orthodox, God-fearing and have a religious frame of mind. This compels us to do charity. And one easy way is to visit a nearby temple and give alms to the beggars there.

All of us should make our all out efforts to stop this menace and the best way is to stop giving alms. It might seem that we are very heartless is not giving money to a little child begging on the street, but his is one step that we can take to prevent begging. If more and more people come out and take pledge that they are not going to give a single penny to any beggar, irrespective of their need, beggary will certainly be completely uprooted from our country.

Thank you Yours sincerely Mohit

and my dear friends! I, Sanjana, stand before you to speak for the motion

that ‘Video Games are Good for Growing Children’. When a child plays a game such as The Incredible Machine, Angry Birds or Cut The Rope, he trains his brain to come up with creative ways to solve puzzles and other problems in short bursts. In shooting games, the character may be running and shooting at the same time. This requires the real-world player to keep track of the position of the character, where he/she is heading, his speed, where the gun is aiming, if thegunfireishittingtheenemy, andsoon.Allthesefactors need to be taken into account, and then the player must coordinate the brain’s interpretation and reaction with the movement in his hands and fingertips. This process requires a great deal of eye-hand coordination and visual-spatial ability to be successful. Thus children learn iconic, spatial, and visual attention skills from video games.

Playing video games enhances the ability of quick thinking, making fast analysis and decisions. Sometimes the player does this almost every second of the game giving the brain a real work out. According to researchers at the University

ofRochester, ledbyDaphneBavelier, acognitivescientist, games simulating stressful events such as those found in battle or action games could be a training tool for real-world situations. The study suggests that playing action video games trains the brain to make quick decisions.

Thank you Against the motion Good morning honorable judges, principal, teachers

and my dear friends! I, Surbhi, stand before you to speak against the

motion that ‘Video Games are Good for Growing Children’. Most of the bad effects of video games are blamed on the violence they contain. Children who play more violent video games are more likely to have increased aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and decreased pro-social helping. Playing too much video game makes children socially isolated. Also, he may spend less time in other activities such as doing homework, reading, sports, and interacting with the family and friends.

Video games teach kids the wrong values. Violent behavior, vengeance and aggression are rewarded. Negotiating and other non-violent solutions are often not options. Women are often portrayed as weaker characters that are helpless.Violence and bad behavior played in the virtual world may be contributing to better behavior in the real world. Persons who play violent games may feel guilty about their behavior in the virtual world and this may make them be more sensitive to the moral issues they violated during game play. Games can confuse reality and fantasy. Academic achievement may be negatively related to over-all time spent playing video games.

Thank you

Abou gave his reply in negative. The angel then gold him that he could not write his name. Abou further added “However I don’t love God, but I love my fellowmen vrey much. I also help the needy.”

Reluctantly the angel included his name int he list but he wrote his name at a place and disappeared.

Every creature on earth is my child and I always went everyone to be happy except those who hurt or harm my other children. Abou is also doing the same work,” said God.

2. Value of Games It is often said that a healthy mind lives in healthy

body. Creativity and productivity can be enhanced by making the pupils healthy. They must not suffer from any chronic and fatal disease. The students can actively take part in all the activities if they have no ailment. It is possible only when they play daily. Physical fitnessmakes the humanbeings active, energetic, enthusiastic and decisive. They become alert and accomplish all assignments. Those who are unhealthy cannot enjoy life. They seem lazy, disheartened and dejected. They lose the battle of life. ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’ is a popularly known saying. Team games give us lessons in coordination. Sportspersons become disciplined and supportive. Man is a social animal. He should adept to the new situations. A sportsman learns to adjust himself in the team. Victory and defeat must not be given importance. The most important is to learn team work and persistent efforts to grow. It is rightly said that there is always a scope for improvement. Games hone our life skills. The most unfortunate thing is that parents do not allow children to play. They are forced to study round the clock. These children develop a sick mentality. They become the victims of inferiority complex. Games refresh players and instil a sense of responsibility in the sportspersons.

SECTION-B3. The Paramount Significance of Trees Good morning respected Our life is dependent upon trees. There is a long

association of man and trees. Since the ancient times man and trees have been the two major creations of Nature. In his prehistoric days man turned to trees and plants to collect the things vitally necessary for his existence. Since that time man and trees have been interdependent, though man is more indebeted to trees.

Todayifweseearoundus, wefindanumberofthingsmade of wood like chair, table, door, cupboard etc. Trees provide shelter to our animals. Trees help to combat pollution. Besides, there are many medicines that are made with the help of medicinal plants.

Trees produce oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. They use sunlight to convert water and carbon-dioxide into oxygen and carbohydrates. We need oxygen for our survival. Trees are the key factors to strike a balance in the eco-system. The forests contain a large number of animal species, crops and medicines. So establishment of new forests with large number of trees (afforestation) is important.

Or Child Labour: A Blot on Society Indeed child labour is a blot on our society. We

canstillfindalargenumberofpeopleworkinginhazardous industries. It is a gross violation of human rights. If children are not dying in explosion, they are dying in slow but sure death in the glass, brass ware, lock, slate, balloon, brick—kiln and other industries.

Besides, they are also engaged in the most hazardous processes in industries which adults do not want to touch. In the glass industry children are primarily engaged in removing molten glass from the furnaces. Since the furnaces are designed for adults, the child’s face is almost touching the wall of the furnance.

The government must take some steps to tackle the problem of child labour.

The message needs to reach the homes of such parents also. Parents also cannot be allowed to send children to work in such industries on the grounds of poverty. A massive countrywide campaign is needed to be launched–like the campaign on the grill child-stating clearly the punitive action which would be taken if children were found to be employed.

SECTION-B3. The Editor The Hindustan Times Delhi 12 April 20×× Sub: Ways and means of saving water Sir, I have returned from a visit to Mehrauli which is

in the grip of a severe water crisis. The problem is equally pathetic in my hometown in Rajasthan. I have got some tips which suggest ways and means to save water and I want it to be published through your esteemed newspaper. Washing our hands and face under a running tap for only two minutes wastes about27litresofwaterwhereasahalffilledbasincan do this work with only 2 litres of water. While brushing our teeth if we let the tap run for five minutes we waste 45 litres of water but if we use a glass of water, we consume only half a litre of water.

Page 39: Assignments in ENGLISH PLUS - fullmarks.org · proper, personal and professional care. 2. Tooth brushing is the best method to remove plaque and proper method of brushing can minimise

39TEACHERS’ HANDBOOK

If we turn off the tap while soaping our body before bathing we use only 20 litres of water, whereas if we let it run we waste about 90 litres. We should avoid usingbathtubsasafilledbath-tubwastes110litresof water. A leaky tap must be repaired immediately to save water.

If we understand it and decide to follow this simple but very important rule, we are sure to solve the problem of water crisis.

Yours sincerely Ankit Kumar Or THE FURY OF FLASH FLOOD Floods are common in India. They are a natural

calamity. They occur on account of heavy rainfall. In hilly regions, cloud-burst is also a major cause. But whenever, it occurs, its fury devastates the life of the people. It also causes huge loss to property andanimals.Standingcropsinthefieldsarewashedawaybytheswiftcurrentsoffloodwater.

Thefuryofflashfloodscausesmoredestructionthannormalfloods.Itisbecausepeoplearenotawareof its occurrence. There is no prediction, hence, no precaution. The way the state of Uttrakhand got devastated is enough to show how people become helpless in the hands of the fury of flash floods. Hundreds of people were washed away in the rushing water. Thousands of them got dislocated. Hotels and buildings got collapsed in seconds.

Such natural calamities shake the lives of the people.

4. There was a lion. One day he was very hungry and went out in search of animals. Soon he saw a hare playing under a tree. The lion’s mouth was watered. “The hare will be a nice meal”, he said to himself and hurriedly went towards it. The hare began to run in fear but was soon caught. The lion raised his paw to kill the innocent animal and make it his nice meal. Just then he saw a deer. “The hare is too small to fill my belly. It is better to make deer my food,” he thought. And the very next moment he let the hare go off and ran after the deer. The deer ran faster than the lion and disappeared somewhere in the dense forest. The lion realised his mistake. He should not let the hare off because it was in his grip.

43TEACHERS’ HANDBOOK

DearPradeep

Last week I along with my classmates went to see the zoo at Mysore. Our class teacher was with us. As we entered the compound of the zoo, we saw a small house surrounded by a wire net. Inside it, we saw a number of snakes of all sizes and colours. The pythons seemed to be two-three quintals heavy. Then we saw a tank full of all kindsofcolouredfish.Theywereleapingaboutand swimming beautifully in the clear water of the tank. We saw many kinds of birds too. The ostrich was as large as the camel. The peacocks presented a beautiful scene. They were dancing merrily. Then we saw the deer and rhinoceros. The big rhinoceros was surrounded by the iron bars.I enjoyed the visit very much. I had a wonderful experience in the company of animals.

Yours affectionatelyGaurav

4. A farmer had three sons. They never heed the advice of their father. They had peevish nature. They often quarrelled among themselves. The farmer advised them time and again to check their irresponsible

behaviour. He intended that they should not quarrel with one another. His words failed. He asked his sons to bring a bundle of sticks. They followed him and came to him with a bundle of sticks. All of them were asked to break those sticks tied in a bundle. The sons tried their level best but could not break the bundle. All failed. Then the farmer united the bundle and asked his sons to break the sticks. All of them broke the sticks easily. The farmer taught them a lesson that if they lived united, misfortunes would not befall them. If they quarrelled, they would suffer. These words of the farmer worked magically. His quarrelesome sons promised him to change their ways. They began to live peacefully.

ASSIGNMENT 4 1. (a) This is the picture of the Red Fort located in Delhi.

It was the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal dynasty for nearly 200 years, until 1857. It was constructed in 1639 by the fifth Mughal Emperor of Shah Jahan as the place of his forfeited capital Shahjahanabad. The Red Fort is the name of its massive enclosing walls of red sandstone and is adjacent to the older Salimgarh Fort, built by Islam Shah Suri in 1546. The imperial apartments consist of raw pavilions, connected by a water channel known as the Stream of Paradise (Nahr-i-Bihisht). The fort complex is considered to represent the zenith of Mughal creativity under Shah Jahan, and although the palace was planned according to Islamic prototypes, each pavilion contains architectural elements typical of Mughal building that reflect a fusion of Timurid and Persian traditions. The Ref Fort’s innovative architectural style, including its garden design, influenced later buildings and gardens in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, Kashmir, Braj, Rohikhand and elsewhere.

Every year on 15th August, the Independence Day of India, the Prime Minister hoists the Indian “tricolour flag” at the main gate of the fort and delivers his speech from its ramparts. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 as part of the Red Fort Complex.
