5. HOMEWORK SHOULD BE ABOLISHEDRespected Chairperson, members of the jury andmy worthy opponent. The topic for today’s debateis “Homework should be abolished” and I, RaviKumar of Class V-C stand before you to speak forthe motion.

Often you find, school children working late nightstrying to complete their homework. I say thathomework is nothing but an additional burden onthem. Children who are loaded with homework areoften weak, sickly and irritable due to working lateat home. Children should be told to complete theirassignments in school itself by giving them an extrahour or two. This way they would be able to comehome and have their lunch on time. They would beable to revise their lessons for the next day. Theycould also go to play their favourite games or go fora walk. They would also have some time left to interactwith their family members or watch programmeson the television. They would then be able to go tobed early and then wake up early. I hope I haveproved my point that homework should be abolished.

Thank you

Gardening refers to the art of looking afterthe plants in our homes etc. There are so manyvarieties of plants like creepers, shrubs, climbers, herbs, trees etc. Each type of plant needs specialcare for its growth. Each type has a different seasonwhen they can be planted, when they produceflowers and when they die. Some have a short lifewhile others live for years. Gardening is an artinvolving many activities like preparing the soil, enriching the soil with manures, caring for theplants, protecting the plants from diseases etc. Weneed not have a gardener for this activity as we canlook after the plants with some training andguidance. It always gives great pleasure to see plantsgrowing healthy and producing beautiful flowers andfruits. Indeed, gardening is a wonderful hobby as itenables one to be with nature and enjoy it. I am happy to learn that you have stood first in yourclass exams. It is indeed great. But your friends havetold me that you are a bookworm and you hardlytake interest in any sports. Let me tell you thatkeeping away from sports is not a good attitude. Itwill affect your health badly. So, please take part ingames like hockey, football, cricket etc. Playing willhelp in refreshing your mind and keep you physicallyfit. It is good for studies too. So, study hard but atthe same time take out some time to play too.

5. ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAYHonourable teachers and my dear friends, the topicof my speech is “Rome was not built in a day”. Itmeans that you cannot achieve fame and gloryovernight. You cannot achieve fame without patientlabour. Rome was once at the height of its glory. Butthis glory took many many years to achieve. Sameis the case with all other things in life. Everybodyis after fame but a few attain it. It is because theydo not have the necessary patience to achieve it.Most people lose heart if they do not get immediatesuccess and they get out of the race. And those whostick, do succeed. One must bear in mind that everygreat work needs proper time, energy and determinationto get executed. There is indeed no magic wand tomake wonders. One must put in a lot of hard labourand wait patiently for success to come.

Thank you.

5. FAST FOODS SHOULD NOT BE BANNED INSCHOOLS

Respected chairperson, members of the jury andmy worthy opponent. The topic for today’s debateis “Fast foods should not be banned in schools” andI, Ashwin Arora of class V-A stand before you tospeak against the motion. It is a common sight to see a lot of plump, fat, rolypoly, obese children having difficulty in walking andbecoming breathless after running in the school. The culprit is the fast food which children relish intheir school canteen i.e. the samosas, breadpakoras, chowmeins, potato wafers, maggi noodles, burgersetc. Such foods are harmful to their health as theyare very rich in carbohydrates and harmful fats. They lead to disorders in children like bloodpressure, obesity, hypertension and breathlessness. Moreover lack of time for walking or sports intoday’s study loaded child has added to his healthwoes. It is high time parents and teachers woke upand banned fast foods in schools and homes beforeit is too late. Children should be encouraged to eatfresh foods, fruits, vegetables containing less fat sothat they remain healthy and active.I hope I have proved my point that fast foods shouldbe banned in schools.

Thank You

7. FAILURES ARE THE PILLARS OF SUCCESSFailures are like bricks which help make the pillar ofsuccess. Success can be achieved only by climbing theladder of failures. Only those who have failed come toknow the full importance of success. The sweetnessof success is increased for those who have tasted itafter tasting the bitter fruits of failure. Fighting withfailures and overcoming them makes a man moredetermined. Initially failures will not be able to breaka determined man. Constant and continuous effortswill give a determined man success one day. The bestexample is of King Bruce of Scotland. He failed seventimes in his efforts to free his country from theEnglish rule but did not lose heart. He tried theeighth time and succeeded. So, it is rightly said thatfailures are the pillars of success.

Thank you.

7. HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICYHonourable teachers and my dear friends. Thetopic of my speech is “Honesty is the best policy.”There are various values that sustain you in life.Honesty is one of those values. Honesty enablesyou to achieve success, satisfaction and peace ofmind. An honest person never deceives anyone. Inreturn, he gets love and respect. He is trusted byeveryone. Honesty, however does not meanhonesty in money matters alone. It includeshonesty in thought, word and deeds too. An honestman is always regular, punctual, straight forwardand fair in justice. He has nothing to fear. He wouldnever waste time. Success and glory go to thosewho practice honesty. All the men of the worldwere honest in their dealings.

7. EXCURSIONS ARE A WASTE OF TIMERespected chairperson, members of the jury and myworthy opponent. The topic for today’s debate is“Excursions are a waste of time”. I, Sushil Mittal ofClass V-D stand before you to speak against themotion. Excursions are never a waste of time. I wouldrather say that they are funfilled tours of shortduration. You come to meet so many people, eatvarieties of food and have adventure filled activities. You get a chance to see new places, historical sites, natural beauty etc. You would forget your worriesand tensions–you go back refreshed and happy. Youget away from tightly packed schedules and busy life. You go back from your excursion with a positiveapproach and full of energy. I conclude that excursionsare exciting, educating and a good way to enjoy living.

Thank you
