STYLES

Styles are commonly used within music videos.

Interpretative is where the song is shownthroughvisuals which refer to the lyrics and the representation ofthem throughout the video. It grabs the audiences attention and gets them to look at what's happening and interpret it themselves.

Narrative is the way a story is told, we are talking about how the music video communicated a story to an audience.

In-concert (as-live) is used in more videos for indie and rock bands. The real-life footage of the band or artist performing live in front of an audience.

Illustrative music videos are the simplest and easiest concept to base a music video around as it is just a literal meaning to the song;s lyrics in visual form.

Surrealist is a form of art movement which shows a creative side of juxtaposition of images.

Pastiche / Homage: Pastiche is where the music video is dependent on another media product, They create a parody of the media product and without theofficialmedia product then the music video would have nothing tocompare to. Homage is where you acknowledge something from the past.

Parody music videos involve changing or copying existing musical ideas or lyrics. The intention of musical parody ishumor.

Animation is a medium which has classically been used to experiment with a story telling techniques, music videos will often use animation. There are two types of animation one Stop Animation and two digital/cell animation. Stop animation is a technique that physically manipulates an object that appears to move on its ownwhilstdigital/cell animation is the process used for generating animated imaged by usingcomputer graphics.

ConventionsLyric interpretationExtending song's meaningFocus on performerLighting for moodAllusion

Conventionsare commonly used within music videos.

Lyric Interpretation is wherethe music video is exactly the same as goodwins theory of link to lyrics and visuals. When something is on screen in the video it is linked together with what the singer is actually singing about. It is overused in some music videos which reduces creativity and innovative as though the creators dont think outside of the box. On the other hand lyric interpretation is effective and is perfect for people who want their video to represent and reflect on the song meaning.

Extending songs meaning is where a music video is used to symbolise and things in the mise-en-scene are further used to push the meaning of the song to also add more of a meaning to a song or bring the lyrics together in a visual explanation to show what the song actually means. You can change the way you make the target demographic feel by having a straight forward song with a consolidating music video.

Focus on performer means that the music video is based around the artist or band. This is done by using a verity of different shot sizes and camera angles which focus directly on the performer. This gives the target demographic and idea of their star image and the music video could reflect the artist and there personality.

Lighting for mood means that the music video will reflect the feelings and emotions of the music video and its follows to the concept of the music video. For example if light lighting is use it will create a dull and sad feeling in the video, which would highlight the song meaning. On the other hand if lots of lighting is used, it gives the impression that what we are watching is a happy and enjoyable moment. This is very common in music videos.

Allusion is very similar concept to intertextual but it less obvious and in your face. Alluding to something mean to reference it so you could blatantly reference another artist by wearing clothes for them or by word of mouth or having it in text on shot which would be intertextual reference.

TechniquesCutting to beatMiming/lip syncSpecial effects e.g. green screenMulti imageCamera techniques : Shots, angles & movement

Techniques are used constantly throughout music videos

Cutting to beat is a music video technique where editors change shots (cuts) on the beat of the song which helps create rhythm and pace in the song

Miming/lip sync is when in a music video the people in the video don't actually sing the song, they just move their lips to make it seem like they are singing the song.

Special effects e.g. green screen are used in music videos to add a narrative.Major record labels will use effects in these music videos.A green screen is something that you can place a background on, this is used in the background of something, in this case it will be a music video, usually you will see the band/artist performing and there will be a big green screen in the background, but in the video it will be something different..For example they will make explosions or building clashing to the group.

Multi Image is when there is different types of shots that are focusing on one target.

Camera Techniques (camera shots, angles and movements) - A tracking shot is where the camera move along with the subject a panning shot is where the camera moves on the shot. These will be used to cover movement. Close ups will be to capture emotion, an establishing shot is used to set the scene, a high angle shot will be used to show somebody's innocence and low angle will show importance respect.

Eminem - Stan

Lyric interpretation-So this is the cassette Im sending you, I hope you hear it. Im in the car right now doing 90 on the free-way See Slim, (screaming) shut up bitch Im trying to talk! Hey Slim, thats my girlfriend screaming in the trunk Well gotta go, Im almost at the bridge now. Oh shit, I forgot, how am I supposed to send this shit out?Extending song's meaningThere is a fictional characterThe chorus sung by Dido doesnt extend the songs meaningThere is four verses In memory of Eminem uncle RonnieFocus on performerDifficult to portray in the music videoStan takes place of the artist and close-up are seenStan placed in centre frame when at his deskLighting for moodLow Key lightingEmphasized and created a certain mood

The lyrics are interpretative throughout the video as the story and clips follow the words of the song. One particular example in when he does the voice recording of himself driving his care into a lake, with hispregnantgirlfriend in the truck which is represented to us in the lyrics. The lyrics to the song tell a clear story, linking in with the video, of an obsessive fan writing to Eminem for the third time hoping for a response.

Extending the song meaning is done by telling the story of a fictional person named Stanley "Stan" who claims to be Eminem's biggest fan. Within the song , he writes letters to Eminem, with each verse he becomes gradually more obsessed with him, and where there is no reply he become progressively angrier. The chorus sung by Dido, doesn't extend or add to the songs meaning. Stan finally creates a voice recording of himself driving his car into a lake. The first three verses are delivered by Eminem as Stan while the fourth verse is Eminem attempting to write to Stan, only to come to therealizationthat he had heard aboutStan'sdeath on the news. Therefore this is allcontributingto extending the meaning of the song as it follows the death ofEminemdeceased Uncle Ronnie, who took his own life in 1991.

Focusing on the performer is difficult to portray in the music video as through most of it, Stan, not Eminem, is narrating the events however due to this, Stan takes place of the artist and close-ups are seen, a specific example being at the beginning of the music video where is looking in the mirror, he is clearly shown to the audience. Throughout the rest of the video, whenever Stan is at his desk, he is always placed in centre frame and if not, the shot is from behind or the side. The camera privileges Stan throughout the music video but still shows cuts of Eminem to re-assure the viewer that it is still his rap. The track is led to the term Stan being used in the industry to describe an obsessive fan and had huge influence within the music industry.

The video starts from a black fade transition shot to a low light set. The low key lighting is continued whilst looking at the broken wall tiles. This emphasizes the social class and the lighting creates a dull and emotional feeling about the narrative and the song lyrics.

IllustrativeBased around a literal meaning to the song lyricsThe music video follows the lyrics to the song'If you didn't wanna talk to me outside your concert you didn't have to, but you coulda signed an autograph for Matthew. That's my little brother man, he's only six years old. We waited in theblisteringcoldfor you, four hours and youjustsaid, "No."NarrativeTraditional narrative structureBased around an obsessed fanMiming/lip syncEminem and Dido are both lip syncing throughout the music videoEminem is lip syncing as Stan and EminemSpecial effects Car crashes scene ExaggerationCamera techniques : Shots, angles & movementOpening shots are zooming and close upsStraight cut shots and different camera angles used in the bathroomShots of argumentsDidoDido is represents throughout by acting the place of Stan's pregnant girlfriend

The music video has a traditional narrative structure, as the exhausted relationship of the protagonist and his girlfriend is presented early on. The root narrative of the video is based around an obsessed fan of Eminem, who neglects his pregnant girlfriend in favour of idolising his favourite artist with a collection of Eminem iconography put together in a shrine, showing intertextuality. We see a shrine with a well executed tilt that takes us through the floor boards

Eminem and Dido are both lip syncing throughout the music video. Eminem is lip syncing as Stan and Eminem.

The special effects used in Stan is when the car crashes into and off the bridge when Stan is angry and aggressive. The crash shows the anger and with the force of the car going off the bridge it shows how dangerous Stan can be so the special effects help exaggerate the anger and the crash.

There is a wide range of verity of camera techniques used within Eminem Stan. The opening shots, zooming towards a window using fade transitions, are of a heavily pregnant women, her stage of pregnancy exaggerated close-ups of her stomach. This then follows on to a straight cut in the bathroom of the man bleaching his hair which is shown in many different camera angles. This is followed by shots of an argument between a pregnant women and her boyfriend. The second verse begins with a low angle shot of Stan looking agitated. They have used a verity of different movements, including tracking, pans, tilt and crane shots. They used tracking shots when the car crashed off the bridge. Tilt shot to go through the floor boards down into the basement to see Stan writing letters to Eminem.

Dido is represents throughout by acting the place of Stan's pregnant girlfriend.

Eminem Love The Way you lie

Eminem Love the way you lived10

Extending song's meaningMale dominanceVideo portrays idea of domestic violenceFemale vulnerabilityWomen can be the ones doing the domestic actionsInterpretativeAggressive nature in the backgroundI love the way you lieFlamesAllusionIm Superman with the wind at his back, shes Louis LaneHow bad their relationship ca be at other timesLighting for moodLittle lightingDull and emotional feelingGives disheartened impressionsMiming/lip syncEminem and Rihanna are both lip syncing throughout the music video

Extending the songs meaning is done by having a male dominance throughout the video, and the power of Eminem's voice throughout over shadows Rihanna's soft tome to emphasise the view. Initially the video portrays the idea of domestic violence, implemented mainly by Eminem. The femalevulnerabilityis also displayed through the way Rihanna sings in front of burning flames singing 'Stand there and watch me burn',however further on in the video Megan Fox throws the first punch, while Dominic is still asleep. And the second, and the majority of all the punches.Thistherefore goesagainst this whole idea of the male dominance. This shows the domestic violence isn't always men on women it can be the other way round which extends the meaning of the song.

Love the way you lie is an interpretative music video. Throughout, Eminem screams his lyrics aggressively in the background as if he himself were the male character of the video, the words connote how and why a over so provocatively fierce in one moment could have gone terribly wrong Rihanna sings the chorus as if she were the female character of the video. Her line, ad title of the song, 'I love the way you lie' suggests the female character finds some erotic pleasure in being repeatedly betrayed and abused. They both have scenes in the front of a house that's engulfed in flames. The flames, represent the heat of desire, of anger and, at some points regret.

Allusion is used through "I'm Superman with the wind at his back, she's Lois Lane" This impacts the listener because it gives us an idea of what their relationship us like when they are not getting along. But it also gives us an idea of how ad their relationship can be at other times.

Within the music video little lighting has been used so creates a dull and emotional feeling throughout the video. This help highlight the narrative and meaning of the song as it is an emotional subject that has affected lots of people in the world. From the start of the music video there is no lighting used which already indicated that music video is giving a disheartened impression.

Special effectsCreate fire over the human body and in the actors handsGreen screen for fire in backgrounds and to show a large fieldBurning buildingCamera techniques : Shots, angles & movementPicture of Rhianna focuses on her not the fireClose ups are used throughoutDiscontinuity editing / Jump shotsLong shot to show mise-en-scene Medium shotEstablishing shot with tiltLong stablishing shotNarrativeConventional of mainstream music videos in the modern dayDomestic violenceMan hitting a women, stealing from a shop and setting a house on fire.Every seems of fine at the start but then escalates rapidly Stereotype

Special Effects are used throughout the music video from fire to a green screen to a burning building. Special effect are used to created a fire over the human body and in the actors hands. This is done to follow the lyrics of the music video and it ties in with the narrative and the lyrics. They use a green screen to complete this and they also use a green screen to show the burning fire in the background when Rihanna is singing. When Eminem is in the field in the grass that is also a green screen which shows his full body and the movement and his actions which show frustration and aggression. They also used the green screen to show the burning building.

Camera Techniques are used in a verity of different ways. The picture of Rihanna is in focus while the fire is blurred in the background which directs the target demographics attention to the intensity in Rihanna's face. Close ups are used throughout the video since the emotion has to be solely portrayed through the actors'/singers' faces. They have used discontinuity editing so shot jumps are used between the narrative story and the singers performing. Camera shots jump from one intense scene to the next without necessarily showing the shots in a continuous manner. They have done this to emphasize emotions and to portray the intensity. The long shot of the actress sets the scene and the tone of the story, the long shot allows the target demographic to see the setting and the effect of the fire links the image with the artist's performance. The song quickens pace it cuts to a long shot of Eminem, the framing of the shot makes the audience feel as through we are in the grass, the grass goes out of focus as it cuts to a medium shot the setting looks brighter and more natural. Further along in the music video the story continues the shots of Eminem and interwoven with the establishing shot which is used a tilt, showing the landscape and the different shots this makes it more interesting and visually appealing. At the end of the music video it shows the couple kissing outside the burning house as Rihanna gets more emotional in her performance, both Eminem and Rihanna turn round to look at the burning house and this is done in an establishing long shot so the target demographic can see everything as through we are stood behind the.

The narrative style is very conventional of mainstream music videos in the modern day. It portrays a narrative about love and domestic violence which is unusual in some cases, it follows a very linear narrative so that the spectator can keep up with it and know what is happening throughout the narrative of the video. The theme of the narrative is violence in relationships as the man in the video is nearly hitting the woman throughout it and creating scenes of violence with other men, stealing from a shop and at the end set the house of fire. Firstly everything starts fine the relationship seems fairly happy, disruption is where he punches the wall and we start to see the man's anger, the recognition and attempt to resolve this are she tries to get away and meet someone else bu the finds her and beats the man up.Then finally he sets the house on fire and the two are shown setting on fire. It creates a binary opposites between women and men. I couldn't help but notice the house setting of the narrative portion of the video along with the couples' wardrobe and how it contributes to the stereotype that abuse only happens in lower-class settings.

Eminem Not Afraid

NarrativeNot afraid of anything or finding himself againStanding on the edge of a skyscraper and falls off a cliffArtist being apart of the narrativeFocus on performerFocuses completely on Eminem No distractions of other peopleMiming/lip syncEminem is miming throughout the whole of the music video.Special effects e.g. green screen Green screen with a skyscraper, cliff and flying Camera techniques : Shots, angles & movementEstablishing shot to show the location Close up of EminemFast Shot and cutsTracking ShotsHigh and low angle shots

The narrative in 'Not afraid' in this particular video is that he is not afraid of anything and is finding himself again. This is linked to the lyrics as the title is not afraid and he is standing on the edge of a skyscraper and also falls off a cliff representing that he is not feared of anything. The artist was also taking part in this narrative making it more personnel for him and what this adds to the video is making it a lot more interesting when watching it for the target demographic.

Not Afraid is purely focused on the performer Eminem throughout the whole music video. Through the narrative of the film it shows the he has no fears and as Eminem is doing all of the acting within the music video he shows that he is not afraid as an individual to do anything. The is no other individuals present in the music video so is sourly focused on the performer.

Eminem is miming throughout the whole of the music video.

The director of the music video has used special effects such as a green screen in the music video to produce a climax and imagery of Eminem standing facing a skyscraper which show bravery of heights and he has also used a green screen further on in the music video when he falls off the cliff and fly's back up onto solid ground.

The camera and editing techniques used at the star of the video is an establishing shot, to show the location in New York and to give the audience a quick and subtle him to where Eminem is and where the video is located. There is also a close-up of Eminem's shoes shown and he is standing tall on the building which adds tension. As the music video carry's on the faster the shots are cut and they start using tracking shots to focus on this movements and actions he taking alongside using panning shots which allow us to see the location of where Eminem is. There is a mixture of high and low angle shots throughout the music video which show the importance and there is no fear,
