INTRODUCTION

Page 5: Assignment Mgt

Food is important for us to survive in our life. What happened if the food

supplied to us does not follow the guideline and not achieve the hygienic level

that has been state by the Ministry of Heath? Do you prefer to buy that food?

That is why we choose this problem as the title of our assignment. We

need to finish an assignment about the problem occur in UiTM. So, we are

interesting to know about the problem that has been suffered by student in UiTM

campus. We want to know about the situation that cause the people choose to eat

outside rather than in UiTM itself. Then we can help to solve this problem.

In order to finish up our assignment, we have done a survey on a group of

students to get their opinion about this problem. The reasons why we choose the

topic “Why People Prefer to Eat Outside Rather than in UiTM” is because we

discover that some dining and food court in UiTM did not follow the guideline that

has been given to them by the Ministry Of Health. At the end we will explain what

are the factor of problem and the opinion of the students to solve this problem.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF UiTM

Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has gone through an era of substantial and continued progress over the past 48 years. Historical moments have been charted ever since its inception as Dewan Latehan RIDA in 1956.

DEWAN LATEHAN RIDA ( 1956-1965 )

The establishment of Dewan Latehan RIDA was inspired by Dato’ Onn bin Ja’afar. As a government agency, it served to alleviate the socio-economic status of rural Bumiputeras by providing training and educational opportunities. It started its operations in November 1956, with the initial intake of 25 students. Among some of the early courses offered were Preparatory Programmes for the London Chamber of Commerce, Bookkeeping and Commercial Practice for Small Businessmen, Stenography, Secretarial Practice and Accountancy. At its first convocation in December 1964, 50 Bumiputera graduates received their certificates from Dewan Latehan RIDA.

MAKTAB MARA ( 1965-1967 )

In response to resolutions made at the First Bumiputera Economic Congress in 1965, the name of Dewan Latehan RIDA was changed to Maktab MARA to consolidate the government’s efforts of national development. The initial courses continued to be offered. In 1966, the Diploma in Business Management course was introduced, with the co operation of the Ealing Technical College in London, as the external examiner to ensure the quality of diploma conferred.

Page 7: Assignment Mgt

The scope and role of the Maktab MARA expanded progressively and the federal government allocated a 300 acre plot of land in Batu Tiga (Shah Alam), as the new campus site. On 14 October 1967, the foundation stone was laid by the late Tun Abdul Razak and Maktab MARA was renamed as Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM). The Shah Alam campus was operational in 1970. ITM continued to experience rapid growth and continuous changes as the Bumiputera institution of higher learning. Branch campuses were set up in stages, in almost all states. In June 1976, the ITM Act was passed and its administration was placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. Subsequently, the ITM Act (Amendment 1996) bestowed ITM with the autonomy to function as a full university, albeit no change in name.

On 26 August 1999, the Prime Minister then, Dato’ Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced its change in name, from Institut Teknologi MARA to Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), at a premier gathering of ITM Alumni with the Prime Minister. The ITM Act (Amendment) 2000, Act A1073 has been implemented at UiTM, since. At present, UiTM offers various programmes at Diploma, Degree, Master and Ph.D level. As the largest university in Malaysia, it has 13 branch campuses, with the student enrolment

of 100,000. Despite several changes in name, the original objectives and functions of UiTM have been maintained, that is, to serve as a catalyst to the socio-economic development of the Bumiputeras.

HISTORY OF UiTM PERLIS

UiTM Perlis is the largest and one of the oldest UiTM branch campuses. It is located in the royal town of Arau, 13 kilometres from Kangar, the capital of Perlis. It is also the pioneer UiTM campus to join the tripartite organization of IMT-GT (Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand- Growth Triangle).

Page 9: Assignment Mgt

ITM Perlis Branch was officially opened on 5 July 1974, with the initial intake of 258 students. The courses offered were 1 preparatory course and 5 diploma programmes. There are Diploma in accountancy, Diploma in Public Administration, Diploma in Secretarial Science, Diploma in Plantation Industry Management and Diploma in Business Management. In the beginning, there were 15 academic staff, and 31 administrative and support staff. It was temporary campus of a makeshift Scouts Building at Padang Katong Road, Kangar. The administration rented individual premises around Kangar to be used as students’ hostels. In the meantime, plans were drawn up for a permanent campus.

Page 10: Assignment Mgt

Consequently, on 27 July 1978, the foundation stone of the permanent campus in Arau was laid by His Royal Highness, the Raja of Perlis, Al-Marhum Tuanku Syed Putra Ibni Al-Marhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail. In 1980, the ITM Perlis Branch in Arau was fully operational on a 335-acre plot of land granted by the state government.

The campus is now known as UiTM Perlis, due to the institution’s change in name in 1999. More land was conferred by HRH the Raja of Perlis and the state government in 2002, making up the campus size of 464 acres. Of this, 240 acres are for the Plantation Unit, which provides practical training and research opportunities. It is also designated as a tourist attraction. Various crops are harvested, namely rubber, bananas, mangoes, cikus and vegetables, besides the breeding of dear, ostrich, cattle and poultry chickens.

As the largest branch campus, UiTM Perlis has a big student population. As at 1 February 2004, the student population stood at 5300, including 3 visually-impaired students. Academic staff total 303, while the non-academic staff comprise 324 personnel. The infrastructure and various recreational facilities are provided for the convenience of staff and students. These include 5 male hostels, 9 female hostels, 4 dining halls, a library, 90 lecture rooms, 5 lecture halls, 11 science laboratories, 10 computer laboratories, 2 language laboratories, 7 engineering workshops,

CONCLUSSIONIn the conclusion, based on the survey that we have done most of our respondents have given different opinion about this problem. The highest factor that caused people to choose to eat outside rather than in UiTM is no variety of food. Most of the students has the same perception that the food serve in food court and dining has no variety. The second reason is the price of the food. The price of food in UiTM is very expensive and not reasonable compared to the price outside UiTM. Other than that, the student chooses to eat outside because the food serve is more delicious. Besides that, the surrounding and service also affect to this problem. Last but not least lack of food supply also contributes to this problem.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

There are many sorts of problems in the UiTM. Most of them are the major factors that give negative impression to students. We decided to choose “food” as our topic of assignment.

As we know, many students in UiTM suffered from food poisoning. Everyday, many student from every part and course came to the Unit Kesihatan UiTM Perlis which is known as UK because of the food poisonous. They took their meal from the stalls inside the UiTM. Hence, we had listed a few of stalls that are located in the UiTM and we figure out that most of them took their meal at Damak Corner, a stall which is located opposite the Damak’s College.

From our own experiences as well, we had detected that students always doing a report about the stall but there is none actions taken. As a result, the number of students that suffered from food poisonous had increase. Students used to give both positive and negative compliments but badly we count up that most of them give bad compliments towards the food served.

Page 20: Assignment Mgt

Other problem regarding food is inadequate food. For example in the Izhaton Corporation, they served lack of food and in a small amount which is tributes to the insufficient food. Hence, students have to find out other stalls to eat. The problem is students do not have transportation and time to go and search for other stalls.

Besides, the food served inside UiTM is also dirty and expensive. The owner of the stalls did not take a serious action in order to ensure the stall had achieved the hygienic level that had been stated. They just think for the profits as they know even their stalls are dirty and expensive; students are still willing to buy and enjoy the meal because it is including students’ health. When they do so they are actually do not have a sense of humor.

As we observed this problem, we really hope that this problem will be managed and settle up. Students need a healthy meal for gaining energy and body as well. A good body comes from the healthy food taken.

Page 21: Assignment Mgt

BACKGROUND OF PROBLEM

We had chosen “food” as our problem to be solved. Hence, we had find out what is the causes that lead to the problem regarding food. We found out that food is the major problem among the students in the UiTM Perlis.

This problem is continuously happened because of their attitudes themselves. They did not take this problem seriously. So, it becomes worse. There is no measures use to overcome this problem.

We found that the stalls’ owner did not use their experiences as guidance. For example is Damak Corner’s stall. He got many comment and compliment regarding their food served. But there is nothing changed. In that way, it is better not to give those compliments as they will never change their attitudes in preparing food.

Page 22: Assignment Mgt

The other cause is students themselves. They give a lot of compliments towards the stalls, but they still enjoy the meal served. All efforts that they put are meaningless. Besides, the other party also did not take the problem regarding food seriously. They think just by giving advices everything going to change. Their perception is totally wrong. Nothing is going to change instead of ourselves.

In conclusion, the food has its history itself. They are not the factor of many bad things happened to man but the maker who make it good or bad. Hopefully, by doing this observation, all the things will change. Food is very important to man.
