    Discourse Analysis 2

01 Adrian: [tapping car-driverhye, hye] Watch out, watch out!

02 Satnam: [walking towards the car] Welcome my friend!

03 Adrian: [coming out of the car and hugging Satnam] Great to see you.04 Satnam: Glad you made it.

05 Adrian: [pointing towards Satnams little boy] This cant be Ajit. Hes a little man already[pause]unbelievable!06 Aparna: I hope youre hungry Adrian.

07 Adrian: Im famished. How are you, Aparna?08 Aparna: I made the fish curry you love.

09 Adrian: I cant wait.10 Satnam: [ha, ha, ha

11 Adrian: She gets more beautiful every time I see h[er],why is that?

12 Satnam: Strange [pause]isnt it? But her fish curry is still awful.13 Adrian: [ha ha...while entering into

the copper mine] You were mysterious on the phone. Why didnt you attend the

conference?14 Satnam: I will show you, Adrian sir.15 Adrian: Satnam [pause]stop sir-ing me. How deep do we need to go?

16 Satnam: 11000 feet [pause]searched all over India for this dig [pause]used to be the

deepest copper mine in the world. [pointing to his brother] Remember my brotherGurdeep? Hes a student now.

17 Gurdeep: Namaste, Dr. Helmsly sir.

18 Adrian: Adrian [pause]just Adrian.19 Gurdeep: [to Satnam in Hindi] I need more ice. Ice bars are melting fast.

20 Satnam: Just dont pour too much [hum].

21 Adrian: How do you work in this heat?

22 Satnam: Youve come on a good day, my friend [pause] [tapping Adrian on shoulder]sometimes it can hit a 120 degrees. [I] want you to meet Dr. Lokesh [pause]

Fellow of Quantum Physics at the University of Chennai.

23 Adrian: Namaste.24 Lokesh: [nodding in response of greeting]

25 Satnam: Dr. Helmsly [pointing towards Adrian]

26 Adrian: [in front of a computer] So [pause]what a[er] we looking at?27 Satnam: These neutrinos are acting normally [pause]minimal mass [umm], no electrical

charge. They pass through ordinary matter almost undisturbed.

28 Adrian: Your message said the count dabbled after the last solar eruption.29 Satnam: That was last week. But this happed two days ago. [showing in the computer]

The biggest sun eruptions in human history [pause]causing the highest

    neutrino count weve ever recorded.

30 Adrian: My god!31 Satnam: Thats not what worries me, Adrian. For the first time ever [pause]the

neutrinos are causing a physical reaction.

32 Adrian: [nodding] Thats impossible!33 Lokesh: [placing feet in cold waterah!] That feels very good.

upcoming drastic geological crisis. Later, Dr. Adrian Helmsly comes to a party held at White

House in order to meet Mr. Anheuser who is the deputy of US president. At the party, Dr.

Helmsly also interacts with one of his subordinate colleagues Scotty. YouTube Link:

    Discourse Analysis:

The discourse starts with a hesitation marker hye-hye (in line 01) when Adrian tends to inform

his car-driver to drive carefully as a child is playing on the street. Afterwards, the conversation

between Adrian and Satnam starts with a greeting-greeting adjacency pair (in line 03 and 04) as

Satnam welcomes his friend-cam-colleague Dr. Adrian Helmsly (in line 02). We also notice that

Adrian hugs Satnam at the time of greetings which implicates that the adjacency pair occurs in a

very preferred sequence. We see a pause in line 05 when Adrian is surprised to see that

Satnams little boy Ajit has grown up. Up to line 05 turn-takings occur smoothly and participants

(Adrian and Satnam) are progressing through the current speaker selects next turn-taking

    strategy.

In line 06, Stanams wife Aparna joins in the conversation through self selection turn-taking

strategy. She adds a new topic in the conversation as well asking Adrian that whether his is

hungry or not. She further informs that she has cooked fish-carry for him. Adrian also responses

quite well saying Im famished and I cant wait (in line 07 and 09). Hence the line 06 & 07

and 08 & 09 are the best examples of solidary routine adjacency pairs. But in the line 08, we

also notice that Aparna flouts the relevance maxim of conversation by ignoring Adrians query

of how she is (in line 07). Adrian has traveled a long way to come to India and he must be very

hungry. Aparna seems aware of that and thus she is more conscious to treat the guest, Adrian.

This would be an implicated meaning of Aparnas flouting of maxim relevance.

We further notice the flouting of maxims of conversation in line 11 and 12. Line 12 lacks

informativeness as we cant find any direct answer of Adrians question which he asks in line

    11. Adrian is wondering why Aparna looks more and more beautiful every time he looks her (in

line 11). Satnam ignores Adrian by saying Strange, isnt it. Satnam maybe dont want to talk

further about his wife as he has some more serious issues to discuss with Adrian. Later as we see

that Adrin adds new topic in the conversation and they (Adrian-Satnam) starts to talk about

geological crisis. This would be an explanation of Satnams flouting of maxim informativeness.

Line 13 to 16, we notice that Adrian and Satnam start to talk on a new topic (about geological

changes) while entering into the copper mine. Here, turn-taking also occurs smoothly and both of

the participants imply current speaker selects next turn-taking strategy.

In line 17 and 18, we see a ritual adjacency pair occurs in a dispreferred sequence. Satnam

introduces Adrian with Satnams brother Gurdeep. Gurdeep says Namaste (a greeting in Hindi)

to Adrian. But Adrian doesnt response well in return. He is also expected to say Namaste or at

least Hello to Gurdeep. But Adrian seems more anxious about why everyone is addressing himby Sir as he says Adrianjust Adrian in response to Gurdeeps greeting. Again, we see a

ritual adjacency pair which occurs in a preferred sequence this time (in line 23 and 24). In

line 22, Satnam introduces Adrian with Dr. Lokesh who is also doing research in the copper

mine. Adrian says Namaste to Dr. Lokesh, and Dr. Lokesh nodding and accepting the greeting

of Adrian. Dr. Lokesh only nods his head in response of the greeting because at that time maybe

he was overloaded with his research work or maybe he is not very intimate with Adrian.

In line 22, we notice that Satnam implies current speaker continues strategy of turn-taking. Atbeginning of the line 22, Satnam clarifies Adrians query of how its possible to work in such a

heat and later he continues (without giving further opportunity to Adrian to take a turn) the

conversation by saying I want you to meet Dr. Lokesh.

From the line 23 to 25, we see that turn-takings overlap a bit as three of the participants

interactAdrian by saying Namaste to Dr. Lokesh, Dr. Lokesh by nodding his head in

response of Adrians greeting, and Satnam by introducing Dr. Lokesh with Adrian. From line 26

to 34, Adrian and Satnam talks further about the upcoming geological crisis. By analyzing the

computer data and other evidences at the copper mine they try to understand the crisis, and hence

conversation progress through more or less smooth turn-takings. In line 33, Dr. Lokesh implies

self selection turn-taking interrupting in Adrian-Satnams conversation.

    Discourse Analysis 6

From line 35, the White House setting of the conversation starts. Mr. Anheuser who is the deputy

of US president is talking in a fund-raiser party at White House. Adrian comes to meet Mr.

Anheuser where he interacts with his subordinate colleague Scotty. Adrian-Scotty interaction

starts with a solidary routine adjacency pair (in line 39 and 40). Adrian draws Scottys attention

as the guards in front of the party-hall arent allowing Adrian to enter into the party (as Adrian

doesnt wear a black jacket which is the dress-code of attending the party). Scotty responses

quite well and he is also a bit surprised to see Adrian as Adrian supposes to be in India. We also

notice a flouting of maxim relevance in Adrian-Scotty interaction (line 41) when Adrian says I

need your jacket in response to Scottys query Whats going on? Adrian is desperate to get

into the party in order to meet Mr. Anheuser which forces him to flout relevance maxim. Thus,

Adrians urgency to meet Mr. Anheuser is the implicated explanation behind his flouting ofmaxim relevance. Adrian-Scotty interaction (line 39 to 46) progress through current speaker

selects next turn-taking strategy with a turn-taking overlap. In line 44 and 45, we see that Adrian

overlaps with Scotty when Scotty is refusing to give his jacket and Adrian is forcing Scotty to

give the jacket. Understanding the participants face (sense of personal worth) can give us a

better idea that why Adrian is so forceful to Scotty (as Scotty is a subordinate colleague of

    Adrian).

Whereas in Adrian-Anheuser interaction (line 47 to54) Adrian is unable to be as forceful as he iswith Scotty. Here, Adrian is a subordinate to Mr. Anheuser and thus he has to explain Mr.

Anheuser (politely) that why Mr. Anheuser should talk with him. Moreover, we see that Adrian-

Anheuser interaction starts with a ritual adjacency pair occurring in a dispreferred sequence

when Mr. Anheuser says Do I know you? in response to Adrians query I need to talk to you

(in line 47 and 48). Mr. Anheusers responses in the interaction are as such because he is way

superior personnel than Adrian. Therefore, without understanding participants face, we cant

understand the implicated meaning of the conversation.
