This example is not meant to overwhelm but to inform. We are posting this example of

Assignment #2 to give you an idea of what we are looking for; we do not want to see carbon

copies of this particular assignment. We have removed all but the final published references

(you need to do your own research - your first assignment should provide an excellent resource

for this assignment). You will see that the main diagram provides an overview of the functions

within the library and shows the relationships between them (although there are many more

that could be displayed). The breakdown diagrams provide greater detail and more information

than in the overview diagram (this is what is meant by separate ‘pages’). They are still rather

linear, however, and would benefit from the inclusion of more relationships. Note the use of color,

shapes, and other features used to organize the concepts. Finally, the main decision points

should be included in the overview diagram and not just in the breakdown ones (where the main

decision points can be supplemented by more specific ones directly related to the function).

Booktown Library: About Us

The Booktown Library is a small public library in a rural town. This public library has 50,000

volumes of books, 5,000 AV materials, and a user size of about 60,000 a year: 20,000 children

and 40,000 adults and young adults. There are 7,000 cardholders, including children, young

adult and adult. The community is made up of all ages, nationalities, income levels, and

information needs. The staff size at the Booktown Library is about 17 employees, consisting of 4

full-time and 13 part-time staff members; including a director, an administrative assistant, 6

cleerks, 3 professional librarians, 3 technical services professionals, a children’s librarian (who

coordinates children’s programming) , an adult/young adult programmer, and a page.
