Liwasang Bonifacio, Ermita, Manila
ANALYSIS:
The Plaza Lawton or the Liwasang Bonifacio, as it is known today, was chosen because it
was a plaza dedicated to one of the bravest heroes that fought for our country. Andres Bonifacio,
who has always been compared to Rizal, is one of the most influential man in the history of the
Philippines. He was born on November 30, 1863 in Tondo, Manila. His known major
contribution in our struggle for freedom was creating the Katipunan, an organization that fought
the Spanish oppressors. He was known as “Ama ng Katipunan”. The plaza was renamed in 1963.
A monument in his honour now stands in the center of the plaza and it was designed by national
artist Guillermo Tolentino to commemorate his birth centennial. The said monument is now
protected by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines marker which makes it a
national treasure. Another factor that made it relevant is that during the Spanish occupation, a
plaza is a very important part of a community. People who lived close to the plaza were
considered as important people. Having a plaza dedicated to someone implies that they are very
important and are well-respected.
Today, the plaza can still be visited although it is never a first choice to visit when in
Manila since it lacks activities that can be done within the area. Also, people may be
intentionally avoiding the plaza especially at night since there are many homeless people and
vagrants that live there. It is not very well maintained especially when it comes to the cleanliness
of the area. Trash are scattered everywhere and it somehow smells bad. The water in the plaza’s
fountain is quite dirty and is being used by the homeless people for washing their face, their
hands, for bathing and somethings even drinking. The place ought to be more preserved and
should be taken with good care.
