BREAKING THE SPORT NEWS

5B y G u y S a v i n o ^ ^ M M S M m l t

SOME ASPECTS OF SPORTS IV.

All of the aspects of modem sports have not been touched in, djei four columns we have pepped under this tide, but intend to leave die subject here, anyway. The very laughable otpniMttofcs. such as the Amateur Athletic Unions, the State Boxing Commissions, the Tennis Associations we haven't ap poached. Why should we have? We have hinted sports have been mechanised. With every mechanical thing there is something that is present for reasons not very obvious, Automobiles have wind catching expensive fenders, and the human body has it* appendix and baseball has iu Landis. Sports have their regulators, theit associations with power to act. That moat of them are designed with the sole purpose of allowing corpulent gentlemen to ease themselves into dress clothes and to parade about arenas of various sorts is quickly seen after a study of them.

W e have no grievance against sports. Their only ill results, as we see them are a crushed hand or leg, or an over-worked lnart or over-development of the muscles and under-developmcnt of die brain. But we do scoff at the sums of money spent on

in schools, colleges and in welfare work.If every Board of Education in every state in the United

States was to order the abolishment of inter-school sports, the country would suffer no appreciable hurt, but would gain considerable. The vast expenditures made on sports are usually explained with the fact, a successful team is good advertising for } community. That reasoning prevails in many cases and we jur..it is no sufficient basis for spending thousands of dollars for I organization in which only a small percentage of the students

Some colleges have made their sport system pay. Not many them have reached that happy state. M«\y_ .°f $*9* 010

of thousands of dollars in a hole each year. If any school has been able to make its athletic system for , we haven’t heard of it, and if such a school does exist,1 it

a meagre minority.* * * * ..........

If the Board of Education was to take the money thc high ' *s spend each year on sports and use it to develop tenni?

_and basketball courts, and baseball fields for thc student? r phy on—and not for teams—and if the groups that organize

every time the high school eleven turns in a good football season were to use the same energy to collect that money to open up additional playing fields for the tennis, baseball and basketball players, why—there wouldn't yet be enough playing room available. But it would be a great help.

If one erf every four students in a high school, and one in every ten or twenty in a college participated in the organized

per centage is high.hlete is a gifted person who has excellent control over :-developed muscles, and if the athlete is good enough

for tmc sport, with a bit of practice he will be good enough for the other. Most sports are dominated by the large-bodied player? and ih high schools not many of them can be found. Thus, a certain few can be found to be present in almost every sport The local high school furnishes examples. So does every school ground you. Colleges, in a lesser degree because of their greater enrollment, find themselves in the same situation.

Sports should net only be given back tn the players, hut should be given to more players. Organized sports that drivr foward dnly to victory don't follow that rule.

, One sure solution of the problem is to take the inter-school team contests out and if contests must be had, make them inter-class, and take the money lavished on team, and use it on the players.

The players, we mean to be every kid who lifts a finger to exercise.
