Groups discussionAs a follow up to the survey, a focus group

sessions was organized, Invitations were sent to each of the questionnaire

respondents who had indicated a willingness to participate.

a MACO-RWANDA ,field assessor consultant was engaged to facilitate discussion ,1 facilitator for each group/6 Group in total

• The aim of these groups was to use the survey results as a basis and

to gather further detail regarding the goat keeping issues facing

dairy. • The structure of each session was designed

to maximize the potential to achieve this aim and the hear what they

really desire particularly.   .The MACO-RWANDA Facilitator wrote

question 10,11 and 12 on the flip-chart and Respondents wrote there discussed answers on a papers.

(See Appendix 2 for the focus group

session-Questions discussed .)

Target Audience and Responses

The quantity of information received has varied. In some cases, the responses have provided little detail, due to the nature of the CBG ;

The graph below shows that there has been

wide consultation within the 6 groups and the Group size From past experience, we know that there are differences in the requirements and training needs of each of these categories

Comment1: All of these 6CBGs are well communicating ,as we see on the chart ,the member participation in decision making is fully made, in all CBGs by group members, but only 3 of them have the legal Status ,others are processing to be legal .

Two of these cooperatives ignore the importance of holding a regular account book. do not fill them ,they keep their cows at home and don't find any interest in finance reporting.

A sensitization and Training in Association & Cooperatives accounts books and rapport, importance of working in Registered cooperative is highly needed .

take only prescribed medication,

Less than 10% is enabled to use morden rearring materials, other above 90% of the CBGs members raising ther cows from home.

70% don,t vaccinate, they also buy and conserve medications on their own decision and use poor material like plastic bath ,plastic baskets,as rearling unstensils

All these 6 CBS,never used the insemination method, and they all hold local race goats.

Only less than 20% of the respondents is able to feed they cows a varied Alimantion .

Comment 3: Only CBG1 [Abishyizehamwe] has managed to encrease both of

the Production parameters[ Numbers of cows, and money] their goats has doubled and they are able to save 25,000Frws/year on the cooperative account.

CBG5[Dukoranumwete] has decreased in number of cows, most of the dead cows ,died after abotion, but at least they managed to have 15,000frws/year.

CBG2,3,6 respectvelly [Abisyizehamwe]and [Abahujumugambi] ,[Zigamira ubuzima]don,t detrmine theit own annual incomes, they don,t have to save on the common account, members have free hand on money they sell individually ,and have testified that the milk poduct is to little;the consurm it and only sell some dung[fumier].

Page 24: Assessment training needs in cattle-rearing

The invariable Cattle, remarked from CBG3 [Abahujumugambi ]caused by the high mortally rate ,both these cows aborted ,but they have them since 2011. Still to date they have yet benefited from them.

VII. Focus Group Session

As a follow up to the survey, a focus group sessions was organized, with a total of 26 attendees from both of CBGS . These were conducted asfollows:Each CBG, assisted by one MACO-RWANDA facilitator, responded these 3

question on the Flip –chart.; answers provided will be present in a table bellow.

Challenges 1- Common challenges

All these 6 ladies CBGS share the listed challenges: the lack of modern rearing essential materials. Their cowsheds are not modern. Minimum production caused by a poor alimentation

based on only available herbal plants .  These CBGs have never benefited a Cattle-rearing

training until to date.  Don’t practice the regular Check –up from the local

available Veterinarian .

Recommendations and conclusion

Having produced a summary of both the questionnaire and focus groups sessions, the next step has been to analyze and to interpret the results from the data collection ,we have summarize the outcome of the assessment .

Some of the conclusions to be drawn from the assessment and corresponding

Recommendations are listed below : modern cattle rearing trainingRecommendation:All the 6 CBGS assessed are willing to have a modern cattle rearing training. We here recommend an immediate training in cattle rearing to all CBGs

members .

Page 29: Assessment training needs in cattle-rearing

Vaccination and regular check upRecommendation: 2 CBGS respondents testified that they have never

practiced the Cow vaccinations,[Dufatanye] and {Abishyizehamwe], they only buy and conserve anyhow medications and sometime they use nature unmeasured herbal juice.

We here recommend a particular training on cattle-Care ,organize a general vaccination campaign to all these 6 CBGS.

Page 30: Assessment training needs in cattle-rearing

Cattle alimentation and hygiene –and reproduction system We have seen only clean CBGS cowshed from Abishyizehamwe ,

tothers are in poor matieriel they don’t even dispose essential rearing materials, most of them use, home plastic basket and basin to give water

We also suggest an introductive course on cowshed construction and specification on rearing essentials materials.

According the alimentation, all these Groups feed they animals with plants derivates [banana-lambs,telebusakumu( ) .A particular lesson on cattle-feeding is highly needed. And a study trip too.

,.

Page 31: Assessment training needs in cattle-rearing

Profit maximization-Saving-notions All these 6CBGS have noticed the importance of legal

statute, they all hold cooperative account bank, but they are nt motivated to keep saving on the cooperative account; eve .2 of them don’t even see the importance of a shared saving account and 3 which have managed to annually save an amount .They said the wish to be trained in cooperative management, project elaboration.

Here we recommend a session of training in Profit maximization and saving notions.

Conclusion.

MACO–RWANDA, in order to be efficient, while assessing the CBGS

needs in training ,used 5 qualified field officers, facilitated by ADRA facilitators from MAHEMBE sector.

This assessment ,has been exhausted from a sample of 26 respondents taken from respectively in 6CBGS Nyamasheke. The Data collection was been conducted in 2 days as proposed , our staff was guided by ADRA facilitator on each and every site.

After the data collection, the supervising team redacted an analyzed and detailing assessment rapport, here presented as

proper product of MACO-RWANDA.
