Create an assembly sequence

Estimated time to complete this lesson: 7 - 10 minutes.

You will create an assembly sequence for this valve and play the sequence.

Steps in this project are minimal. If you need to review the exact procedure for any portion of 

this activity, refer to the section on Assembly Sequences.

Create a sequence

Open valve_partial_assembly and start the Assemblies application.

Set up translucency, if needed.

Create a new assembly sequence.

Change the name of Sequence_1 to Pump Assy Sequence.

In the Details pane, double-click Display Split Screen to display a split screen.

Note:

Remember to adjust the view as needed.

Use Disassemble and Assemble

Expand the Preassembled folder in the Pump Assy Sequence.

Select all components under Preassembled folder, then right-click and choose

Disassemble.

The housing is the component to which other components will be added.

In the Assembly Navigator , right-click Constraints and choose Hide All Constraints.

Right-click valve_housing and choose Sequences→Assemble.

The valve component is added to the sequence and shown in the sequence work view. The

step default name is that of the component.

 Assemble the arm and cover bolts

Now, you can assemble the vendor supplied subassembly as one sequence step.

In the Assembly Navigator , right-click valve_vendor_subassembly and choose

Sequences→Assemble Together .

In the Assembly Navigator , select all three valve_cover_bolt components, then right-click

and choose Sequences→Assemble Together .

In the Pump Assy Sequence, click Sequence Group 1 step.

In the Details panel, rename it to 3 Cover Bolts.

Property Value

Name 3 Cover Bolts

Why are the cover bolts referred to as a Sequence Group in the Sequence Navigator whilethe vendor subassembly, which was also assembled as a group, is not?

The vendor subassembly is seen as one component (its components are seen as an"implied" sequence group), while each cover bolt must be explicitly identified as being part of a sequenced group.

 Assemble the valve and shaft bolts

There are three remaining components: the valve, and the two shaft bolts that hold the valve

to the shaft. First add the valve component.

In the Assembly Navigator , right-click valve and choose Sequences→Assemble.

Ctrl+click both valve_shaft_bolt components.

Right-click and choose Sequences→Assemble Together .

Click Sequence Group 2 in the Pump Assy Sequence.

In Details panel, rename the Sequence Group 2 to 2 Shaft Bolts.

 Add camera steps

In the sequence work view, orient your view to the approximately as shown and click Record

Camera Position .

In the Pump Assy Sequence, drag the 2 Shaft Bolts step to just after the Camera step.

Play the sequence

Choose valve_housing in the Pump Assy Sequence.

Right-click and choose Go To Step.

On the Assembly Sequencing Playback toolbar, click Play Forwards .

Click Finish Sequence .

Close all parts.

Create a clamp assembly

Estimated time to complete this lesson: 16 - 24 minutes.

In this project, you will create this clamp assembly and assign assembly constraints.

 Assembly constraints may be assigned using one of two available methods:

•  Assignment on existing components of an assembly.

 Assignment on components as they are added to an assembly.

Design intent

You will bring five piece parts into your assembly.

You will begin by creating an empty assembly part.

Create a new part file using an Assembly template. Use Inches for the units. Name the

assembly clamp_assm. Place the file in a directory where you have write permission.

 Add the clamp base

 Add the part clamp_base to clamp_assm at the Absolute Origin. In the Settings group,use Entire Part, and Work, and click OK.

Click Assembly Constraints and add a Fix constraint for the clamp_base.

Verify that the constraint is displayed in the Assembly Navigator . If necessary, click Include

Constraints .

 Add the clamp cap

You will add the clamp_cap so that the assembly looks like this.

Click Add Component , and add the clamp_cap part. Use the positioning of By

Constraints. Use settings of BODY and Work.

Click Apply.

Position the clamp cap using centerlines

 Align the cylindrical axes of the holes of the cap and the base.

 Add a touch constraint for the clamp cap

 Add an angle constraint

Click Assembly Constraint and add an Angle constraint of 180 degrees between the

top face of the cap to a top face of the base.

 Add the clamp lug

 Add the clamp_lug component. For settings, use the Entire Part and Work layer. Align the

datum axes of the clamp_lug and the right hole in the clamp_base.

 Add an angle constraint

 Add the Angle constraint to the centerline of the clamp_lug and the flat upper face of the

clamp_base, and use an angle of  –90 degrees.

 Add the clamp nut and clamp pins

The last components to be added and constrained are the clamp nut and two clamp pins.

Clamp nut  Clamp pin 

Test your knowledge by adding and mating the two pins. The two pins hold the cap and lug

to the base.

Your successful solution should look like the illustration below.

Hide all constraints, and replace all reference sets with Model.

Close all parts.

Working with an automotive assembly

Estimated time to complete this lesson: 10 - 25 minutes.

The automotive assembly and phone assembly give you a chance to apply what you havelearned about assembly modeling in NX.

You are encouraged to exercise your acquired knowledge of basic assemblies on these

projects.

These models provide a safe environment in which to create reference sets, apply mating

conditions, apply attributes, and so on.

• Choose Assemblies→Reports→List Components.

In the Assembly Navigator , examine all subassemblies in the top level assembly.

Notice that solid bodies are located in the subassemblies. These bodies should be included

as components of the subassemblies.

Using what you have learned in this course, replace these bodies with components. Be sure

to position them correctly.

Make drive_hub_asm the displayed part and check the components.

Examine the drive_innercv_asm subassembly

Display the parent drive_assembly.
