Principal’s message (continued)

All students now have support not only from your parents and teachers but also from your fellow students.

You can approach them for help and advice at any time.

I have a Challenge for the senior student leaders.

I challenge you to get involved in One community project by the end of term three with the help of your

colleagues, family and friends. There are many community projects such as feeding the homeless, helping

the elderly, collecting clothing for the needy and assisting those communities experiencing the devastation

of war, drought and flooding.

Student Leaders please read, acquire, gain knowledge to improve yourself and use this acquired knowledge

to make this world a better place for all to live in peace. From today you must read, listen and gain

knowledge about leadership and what skills are needed to be a good leader. Read about past successful

leaders and study how you should act and behave as a leader of AIIC students.

I congratulate you on your appointment as College Captain, College Vice-Captain and College Student

Council leaders. You have the opportunity to help your fellow students and the community.

Be confident, be a great role model, inspire others by your actions and make a positive contribution to your

college.

May Allah (SWT) guide you and give you the strength to be excellent student leaders for 2019”.

FROM THE PREP CLASS Dear Parents and Guardians,

Asalamualaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barkatahu,

A very special welcome to all the new families and Prep students who have joined our school this Academic year. In sha Allah we are going to have a fantastic year with lots of fun learning happening in the Prep class. I hope you have enjoyed your first few weeks of your child attending school. The students have settled well into their new class and are already following rules and routines in and out of the classroom. I am very excited about teaching your child as I have planned lots of fun learning activities, which I’m sure they will experience great growth, and learning this year in 2019. I have very high expectations of all the children that I teach and I am there to guide, support, encourage and

challenge children’s learning.

The students have already started with their homework and are already showing progress. The prep students

are given a set of spelling words to learn along with the jolly phonics. They will be given books to read as soon

as they have learnt to read the first set of spelling words. It is important for prep students to learn through

repetition as repetition provides the practice that children need to master new skills. Repetition helps to

improve speed, increases confidence, and strengthens the connections in the brain that help children learn.

It is important that Prep students complete homework that is given to them. Homework provides students with

opportunities to consolidate their classroom-learning, pattern a behavior for lifelong learning, beyond the

classroom and involve family members in their learning.

Sun hat is essential as we are a Sun Smart School and children are not allowed to play outside or participate in

sports activities if they do not have a school hat. Swimming lessons will begin next week so please ensure that

all items of the clothing are named so it can be returned to its rightful owners if they are misplaced.

Please come and talk to me if you have any questions or concerns. I am available most days after school or

alternatively you can contact me through the school office or email me on [email protected] Your

child will also be given a communication booklet where we can correspond to each other.

I look forward to working with your children to ensure they reach their full potential this year.

FROM THE YEAR 2 CLASSROOM Asalaamu alaikum Wr Wb

Dear Parents/ Caregivers

We are half way in to our first term and we have covered so much content already in year 2. In Maths we

covered basic addition, subtraction, measurement, 2D Shapes and now we are on our 3D shapes. In Health

we are looking at all the wonderful things that make us special. In art our class had a lot of fun drawing our

portraits and others. Our Science lessons consist of forces (push and pull), we even got to play with play-

dough as part of our force experimentation. In History lessons the students have discovered all the changes

that have occurred around our house. We looked at old house hold items and toys and compared them to

the new ones we have today. We also discussed how things might look in the future.

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

As our 2019 school journey begins, I would like to congratulate all Year Six students on a successful start to the year. Being only 4 weeks into Term 1, Year 6 students are well aware that this year’s focus will be to equip them for an effective transition to High School. In doing so, students have impressed me with their ability to demonstrate strong organisation skills and a willingness to positively act on feedback given in all areas of the curriculum. They have already demonstrated a marked improvement as a result of their encouraging and upbeat attitude towards learning.

Many teachers across the school were also impressed with Year 6’s enthusiasm towards taking on leadership roles. With

campaign posters and stickers in hand, the majority of our class put their hand up for the responsibilities that go with School

Council and Captaincy roles. They were posed the daunting task of presenting a captaincy nomination speech whilst standing

before almost half the school population. And, whilst the competition was fierce, our frontrunners had to emerge. A big

congratulations to our newly selected Primary School Captains Yousef Masri and Asma Antar and our Student Council

representatives Muhammed Masri and Adela Meskovic. We look forward to the many ideas our representatives will contribute

at upcoming council meetings.

Adela Luqmaan Omar

As our school journey goes on, I hope to see Year 6 continue to show such confidence and work ethic throughout the year. With assessments fast approaching, I encourage students to maintain their homework commitments and ensure they engage in as much reading as possible. I also remind parents to support your child’s academic success by ensuring their nutritional needs are being adequately met. Whilst we have been discussing how to maintain a healthy body and healthy mind in the classroom, it is important this is being reinforced at home with the provision of a healthy breakfast and nutritional lunch.

On a final note, thank you to parents who made the time to attend our parent information session. It is important that students see you are taking an interest in what is happening inside the classroom. Research shows that our children succeed most when parents actively engage in their child’s education, as it helps students to value the learning process. In working together for the betterment of our students’ future, I look forward to welcoming more parents into our classroom as the year goes on, insha’Allah.

Kind regards,

Merima Celahmetovic

NEWS FROM YEAR 6

Page 9: Assalamu álaikum Wabaratullahi Wabarakatuhu, a ......Asalaamu alaikum Wr Wb Dear Parents/ Caregivers We are half way in to our first term and we have covered so much content already

2019 has begun with students re-establishing their daily disciplines for study after the long Summer break. It is

particularly wonderful to see the new year 7’s mostly remembering to do all of their homework and following the

daily routines to ensure there can be real learning in class setting them up for success now and into the future.

History

Year 7/8’s are learning about the basics of history and archaeology. We have been considering

ancient relics versus hoaxes in both Australia and overseas.

Year 9/10’s are learning about World War II and the Holocaust. They are seeing that it was

not only the attempted genocide of the Jews as a race but also Christians, people with black

skin or a disability and that even those with brown eyes or any other hair colour than blonde

were targeted!

We also discuss how history can impact our lives on a daily basis today such as with certain interest groups using

obvious and subtle propaganda techniques to influence our thinking.

English

Years 7 – 10 are working on narrative stories this term. We are learning what makes a good

story and the importance of overcoming. There is lots of excitement to be sharing stories.

Year 11 has begun at the Gold Coast. We have been considering different aspects of what

it means to be Australian as well as why we think the way we think and how we are

positioned to feel a certain way about an issue.

Visual Arts

Year 7/8’s are working on perspective drawing whilst year

9/10’s are working on pop art. We hope to showcase

some of their masterpieces in the next newsletter.

We look forward to a successful term 1.

News from our library: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Great news – AIIC Gold Coast now has a fully functioning library with its very own librarian! After the installation of new Library database software, our books have now finally been catalogued and organised according to their relevant sections. This has been great news for our students who are finally able to efficiently search for books they are eager to read.

Over the past two weeks, students have been learning to understand the Dewey decimal system and where the numbers and letters of spine labels come from. It has been wonderful to see students coming into the library during library lessons and referring to the Dewey decimal system information posters to find books on specific topics that interest them. It has been even more wonderful to see students also coming in at lunch times to borrow books or to read to one another. Considering the importance of instilling a life-long love of reading in our children, I would say this has been a huge step in the right direction for our school!

Our younger students have also been busy learning about the importance of caring for our books so that we have lots of books we can continue to enjoy together. In doing so, children were given the opportunity to enter a colouring competition that helped them to understand how to make sure our books are not damaged. A big congratulations to Noah Abou-Zeid of Year 2 and Aaleyah Celahmetovic of Year 1 who both did an amazing job with their colouring entries. Noah and Aaleyah both worked hard to win special prizes. Their entries (along with all other entries) can be found on the walls of our library.

For parents who would like to come take a peak, our library is open Monday to Thursday at lunch time between 1:15 and 1:45pm. I have also been keeping our library open during Madrassa times on Monday and Thursday afternoons between 3:20pm and 4:20pm. We would love to share the excitement of our new library with the community, so please feel free to come in and have a chat or to share the excitement of a book with your little one.

On a final note, as our library is just at its humble beginnings, please remember that we are keen to accept any donations of books you may no longer be using at home. Book donations can be left with Sister Fatima at the front office or passed onto myself in the Year 6 classroom.

Kind regards,

Merima Celahmetovic
