My vision is to have many people sharing the workload so that each person will be committed to volunteering no more than a few hours a month. Currently, there are a few empty positions and a few volunteers have doubled up and are filling more than one capacity. But, all in all, I am happy with the number and dedication of the current volunteers. So, with this eager group of volunteers, we began planning the fiscal year. I believed we must first find out what our members were interested in before we could make plans. We created a survey and emailed it to our members. We were a little surprised once our Programs Chair complied the results. It appears the most popular night to conduct monthly meetings is on Thursdays, not the Tuesdays which our meetings were traditionally held. The most popular price for meetings was *free* (does that include dinner?). And we obtained a bunch of ideas for seminar topics. (Continued on next page)

Chair’s Message

Dear Temecula Valley ASQ Members,

Hello everyone! I’m Lisa Grosskopf, the newest Chair of the Temecula Valley ASQ. I hope that by now you have noticed a change in our section. This year’s leadership team and I have been making changes and adjustments so that every ASQ member perceives tangible benefits by being an ASQ member.

Even before the new fiscal year began in July, the unofficial “planning committee” conducted several meetings to determine, first, if there is enough interest to continue an ASQ section in Temecula, second, if there is enough interest, are there enough volunteers to make the section work, and third, if there are interest and volunteers, what could we do to make our members feel connected and how can the section provide beneficial services to our members. Over the last couple of years, it seems that only a couple of people were truly interested in keeping the section going and were attempting to perform all volunteer activities themselves.

I have been involved in a couple of different ASQ sections, and believe that I have learned quite a bit about the field of quality by attending monthly seminars. I truly believe that, with enough volunteers and hard work, the Temecula Valley section will be a section our members are proud to belong.

Well, there is interest in keeping a section active in Temecula. Several people have volunteered to hold key positions. We could still use a few additional volunteers, though.

From the Membership CommitteeGreetings fellow members and welcome to your “re-energized” Temecula chapter.

I am Mike Wakshull, co-membership chair for ASQ Section 713 and programs chair for the ASQ Southern California FD&C discussion group. My background is more than 20 years managing global, cross-functional, multidisciplinary and multinational Quality and Information Systems functions. At Amgen I managed the Corporate Quality Risk Management group and built the global IS governance organization. Currently I work in the risk management group at Abbott Vascular. My passion is handwriting analysis and forensic document examination. These disciplines are both studies in variability which require analytical skills.

I am Pat Spink, a “hands on” coach and mentor I have developed a successful international quality and manufacturing operations career with responsibility for operations in China, Mexico and the United States. For more than 20 years I have held leadership roles for a major medical device company and a high volume global plumbing products manufacturer. In these roles I had responsibility for quality and regulatory affairs, manufacturing, safety, customer service, supply chain and supplier development.

We are here to answer all your ASQ membership questions and help you with any issues which may occur. Additionally, we are working to meet a Section goal of retaining existing members and we have a bunch of great ideas. We look forward to working with each of you this year!"_____________________________________________________________________________

Chair Message (continued)Being the Chair means that sometimes I get to do what I want (within reason). I wanted to kick off the ASQ fiscal year spectacularly and have the first meeting somewhere memorable. Since Temecula Valley is known as wine country, the team and I decided to hold the kick off meeting at a local winery. What a great idea this turned out to be! I certainly hope that you attended this event.

Speaking of events, our annual Quality Day celebration is rapidly approaching. This year's theme is "Quality: Taking Root in Times of Change". The Keynote Speaker will be David Spong, the President-elect of ASQ. I hope to see all of you there!

The leadership team is planning several additional activities, one of which is a new website that will include the ability to register online for our events. The new web address is www.asq-temecula.org.

We are working hard to develop programs that meet our member’s needs. Feel free to contact me directly if there is anything that we are missing or could improve.

Sincerely,Lisa Grosskopf2009-2010 ChairTemecula Valley ASQ Section #0713

This Month’s Program

Quality Day is Coming Soon!

It is October and time to celebrate National Quality Month! The Temecula Valley Section of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) is again organizing a community-wide event to reaffirm our commitment to quality principles and practices. The theme for this year’s event is “Quality: Taking Root in Times of Change” and we expect it to be our best ever.

The concept for the theme came from the perception that, due to the current economic climate, quality is taking a back seat at many companies. Participation in quality-related activities is down from prior years' participation. Employees are fearful that their job may be eliminated and are often required to perform twice as much work as they have had in the past. Additionally, tying to the "Roots" theme is a rededication of an apple tree. This tree was planted 10 years ago this month and was originally dedicated to the management at Guidant (now known as Abbott Vascular).

We are very excited that David Spong, President-elect of ASQ has agreed to be our Keynote speaker. Mr. Spong’s topic will be “ASQ’s Future Study“. This is an opportunity you should not miss! There will be presentations, tutorials, exhibitors and guest speakers throughout the day.

The celebration is scheduled for Thursday October 22nd, 2009 and will be held at the Abbott

Vascular facility (26531 Ynez Road, Temecula, 92591). Onsite registration begins at 7:30, with the event starting at 8:00 am and ending at 5:00 pm. Our luncheon is $20.00 per person (advanced registration only) and seating is limited, so please let us know by the 19th if you would like to join us. Attendance at the remainder of the day's events is free. We look forward to seeing you at this event!

Sincerely,

Theresa SamuelsQuality Day CommitteePh: 951-914-1218

AQS Meeting at the Temecula LibraryBy Frank De Meo

In our September meeting we had the honor of having one of the original founders of our ASQ section speak to us about Risk Management. Tony Chan, an internationally known expert on Risk Management, was our featured speaker. He made a special trip back from the Far East to speak to us.

But before started the formal portion of the meeting we enjoyed a catered meal while seated in outside patio of the Temecula Public Library. It was a good time of fellowship and conversation.

For the formal portion of the meeting, Tony delivered a comprehensive message about risk management. He explained the importance of effectively understanding our risks and learning how to mitigate them. Tony explained the current regulatory expectations, emerging standards and provided guidance on the roles and responsibilities of executive management. His message demonstrated that good risk management is a system. The audience asked several questions that were relevant to their specific businesses and about where the science of risk management is headed in general.

ASQ Section Meeting at the Winery

By Ric Van Der Linden

In the rolling hills of the Temecula Valley wine country, a region renowned for its natural beauty and wine country experience, a rustic and charming winery awaits (as seen on the Ponte web site) and, what a great place to have held our July section meeting. More than 40 members attended the meeting held at the Ponte Winery in the Temecula Wine Country. Not only was the food and wine great, the tour was even better. We had a chance to see behind the scenes of wine making. We heard directly from the one in charge of managing all aspects of growing the grapes to producing the wine. Think of a winery as a small business with a product to be produced and sold. With so much variation in producing the wine, building of the product is more of an art than a science which makes for a special challenge when managing processes and controlling quality. It was great to see that even a small business, such as this, can put to use the aspects of quality that ASQ teaches and supports.

From the VOC Chair to you.By Ric Van Der Linden

So, what is VOC? You may have heard of “Volatile Organic Compounds”; it’s not that VOC. The VOC we are talking about is “Voice of the Customer”. ASQ has created a chair position to focus on VOC – Voice of the Customer and you are the customer. Here is the description of the new position that is being established at all sections:Promote member unit and Society research opportunities, participate in questionnaire development, and conduct analysis that will provide useful and applicable information to member units and the Society through collaborative voice of the customer efforts.

I have spent years working with other chapters of ASQ and have always tried to establish a section that responded to us…the members. Last year I moved to Temecula and began getting involved with the Temecula section. I worked together with the other board members to create and deploy the member survey that went out to you a couple months ago. The intention of the survey was to “hear your voice”. We learned your preferences for meeting frequency, location, timing and topics. And, the board is adjusting to assure the majority of the members get what they want from ASQ.

As the VOC Chair, please know that I am here to support you and would like to hear your voice. If you want ASQ to provide in a different way, please feel to contact me. Ric Van Der Linden (619) 244-8705 [email protected]

Education UpdatesBy Tony Duarte

As the Education Chair, let me tell you the plans I have for the upcoming year! Our goal is to provide the general membership and local community the tools they need to feel comfortable in taking certification exams and passing them on the first attempt. We are scheduling refresher courses for several upcoming ASQ exams in 2010. We plan to offer Certified Quality Auditor (CQA), Certified Quality Improvement Associate (CQIA), and Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) refresher courses. Where else can you get 30 class hours of training for only $560.00? There are several other exams available and we hope to get some feedback from our members regarding various certifications they are interested in taking. The technical content of our refresher classes is similar to courses offered in nearby areas. However, the other courses are sometimes almost twice the price! Our instructors are certified in the area in which they teach and we have several instructors for each class. Each instructor contributes their own experience and knowledge on the various subjects. This benefits the students by having various points of view on the subject material. Our previous experience has shown that students understand subjects better if the material is presented in various styles and formats. We did schedule a couple of refresher courses that started the first week of October. These courses were to be completed in time to support the ASQ certification exams which will be held on December 05, 2009. However, only one student showed up for the Audit refresher course and no one showed up for the Engineering refresher course. Therefore, the courses were cancelled. :(Please take some time to contact us and let us know which courses you are interested in taking; we will do our best to provide the required training in a timely manner, in support of your needs and goals for your future and career. You can reach me directly at [email protected] or (619) 540-2777.
