The Capacity Challenge The Aspire Di�erence

Faced with network resources being pushed into overload causing service quality degradation, mobile Operators are forced to expand network capacity. Before heavy CAPEX spending, Operators want to verify the need for investment and ensure it goes to the right parts of the network. Facing an unexpected increase in user data tra�c, a Tier 1 mobile Operator turned to Aspire Technology. Aspire was tasked firstly with conducting an independent network capacity audit, followed by an impartial evaluation of the Capacity Expansion Programme advocated by the Operator’s equipment supplier.

A major surge in demand for network capacity is sweeping the mobile

telecommunications industry. With increasingly versatile smart phones, tablets

and other mobile devices, consumers have an unprecedented and accelerating

appetite for immediate access to data, video and voice services.

During the audit phase, Aspire didn’t limit itself to merely performing a comprehensive analysis of current network resource utilisation. As part of Aspire’s holistic approach to Capacity Management, it went one step further by profiling Network Tra�c and Terminal characteristics. Upon detecting ine�ciencies in radio data tra�c handling, the Aspire team developed and re-designed the Operator’s tra�c strategies for Idle Mode, IRAT, and inter-carrier Load Sharing. Resulting improvements in data tra�c handling enabled the operator to realise a substantial 25% increase in capacity without additional CAPEX.

When it came to the second phase of evaluating the equipment vendor’s Capacity expansion proposal, Aspire’s revised version was significantly less than the vendor’s. This enabled the Operator to reduce CAPEX spend by 67%.

The Operator’s initial expectations were that Aspire would draw on its considerable RAN experience and methodologies to perform a comprehensive Network Capacity analysis. What really wowed the Operator, however, was that Aspire not only delivered on this primary goal, but also delivered improved Capacity utilisation and CAPEX savings. Since then, Aspire has become the go-to partner for the Operator when it requires impartial expertise in critical network issues.
