I am delighted once again to highlight the achievements of our Arden HSC students, these from our Class of 2016. In these pages you will see the benefits of an Arden education: not only have our HSC students enjoyed some impressive results, but they are well-rounded individuals who are ready to engage with the world. They have enjoyed the support of a genuine community, buoyed by parents, teachers and each other. And as they embark on some exciting opportunities, you’ll see that many of them have a real sense of giving back, a responsibility towards others, particularly those less fortunate than themselves. This is borne out of a strong Christian message that forms the backbone of Arden as a school.

My thanks in particular go to our hardworking teachers for partnering with the Class of 2016 throughout their Arden journey. With a passion for their subject areas, our teachers have not only encouraged students academically, they have also helped students to find out ‘what makes them tick’—their unique gifts and strengths.

You will notice that during their HSC year our students strived to find balance and enjoyed participating in all areas of school life. We now have students embarking on all kinds of adventures, whether on a Gap Year that will hone skills and widen horizons, or undertaking further study in diverse fields such as midwifery, human rights law, biomedical science and the media.

In terms of tertiary entrance, the ATARs our students achieved were most conducive for tertiary entrance. Indeed, 94% of Arden students received offers of places in degree programs through the Universities Admission Centre, overseas or private providers. There continues to be an emphasis on early entry offer equivalents and our well-rounded students enjoy a real advantage in this area.

Well done Class of 2016. We look forward to hearing news of your continuing learning adventure and the positive, powerful impact you will each make in our world.

Mr Graham Anderson Principal

“My teachers instilled in me a passion for the world. They taught what really matters is developing your character rather than how high you achieve academically… that success is not built on how high you achieve, but that life is also about service to others.”

EMMA SPIRITOSANTO 2016 YEAR 12 STUDENT

When our Year 12 students reflect on their time at Arden, and in particular their HSC year, there is a consistent theme: they express a real gratitude for the passion and dedication of their teachers as well as the support and care their teachers showed. Arden students appreciate and acknowledge the vital role their teachers played in their HSC success. They note that their teachers led by example, teaching lifelong lessons in addition to subject content, and offering genuine, caring and individualised support to help them achieve their personal best.

you thrive at your job and leave the greatest mark on

LIAM BAKER 2016 YEAR 12 STUDENT

“My teachers have demonstrated how to apply your passions and interests to your career and celebrate the individuality of each person. They have also shown the value of lifelong learning.”

PHOEBE GOTO 2016 YEAR 12 STUDENT

Students felt that their teachers had prepared them well for life outside school. “My teachers have helped me to see the merits of hard work and diligence this year and to persevere,” said Nathan Carr. “They have helped me build a good work ethic, time management and commitment,” Chris Mallison said. Eden Li emphasised the acquisition of lifelong skills: “They have taught me valuable lessons such as preparation, perseverance, patience and empathy.”

“Arden’s teachers have prepared us for life after school through their daily example,” said Oliver Hubbard. “They conveyed the power of passion and hard work as truly inspiring teachers, across all subjects. They also demonstrated compassion and care. Their teamwork showed us the importance of community, and their leadership also showed a real selflessness. They embodied foundational values every single day.”

“The teachers provided an environment where I could discover my strengths and have given me the mindset to pursue my passions and dreams,” said Liam Baker. Nathan Carr agreed: “They kept seeing the potential in us and always believed that everyone could improve their marks with more practice. They encouraged us to ask questions and provided valuable feedback throughout the HSC year.” Claira Benn appreciated that her teachers taught and encouraged her to develop her own thoughts and opinions.

Angela Zhang plans to become a human rights lawyer and is aiming to undertake a combined Commerce/Law degree at The University of Sydney under the dux scheme. Ultimately she wants to “ensure each individual’s inherent rights are respected and protected.”

With an ATAR of 99.3 Angela is the 2016 Dux of the School. She made the HSC All Rounders List, received an Arden Academic Excellence Award and placed first at Arden in Chemistry, English Advanced, Legal Studies, Mathematics, Music 2 and Music Extension.

Her proudest achievements were being elected Prefect and overseeing the performing arts and co-curricular portfolio. “I had the opportunity to encourage students to become involved with co-curricular activities,” she said. Part of this role included organising a student music concert each semester.

Angela made sure she kept a well-balanced approach during the HSC by being involved in the Social Justice Group, Debating (both as a team member and as a coach to junior teams) and continuing her sporting passions. She was recognised as Age Champion in 2016 for Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics.

Angela’s advice to other students is to keep organised and to work with friends: “Collaborating with friends allows you to share ideas and ensures greater understanding and memorisation of the content and it definitely makes studying much more enjoyable.”

“Arden is a well-rounded school,” said Angela. “While it focuses strongly on academic education, it also nurtures and cares for each student to ensure they reach their full potential.”

KATHERINE LOWatar: 92.65

Where to nowI will be studying International Studies and Media (Communications and Journalism)at the University of New South Wales.

Favourite memoriesThe Cambodia and Vietnam Mission trip because being somewhere completely new with a group of people you love, seeing poverty first hand, and instilling change was truly rewarding.

Special achievementsI think the greatest achievement of my time at Arden was participating in the Hillary Challenge in Year 10 and Year 11 for both State and Nationals. Being pushed mentally, emotionally and physically was challenging, but the reward of completing such a rigorous competition in a team of fellow Arden champions was worthwhile.

Co-curricular activitiesDance, Netball, Basketball, Touch Football as well as Hockey and Volleyball Championships.

Advice for those still to finish schoolTreat each other as resources, sharing knowledge and notes is so helpful. Most importantly, maintain your health.

Liam will be studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)/Commerce degree at the University of New South Wales and is hoping “to work in an NGO or charity organisation creating a sustainable future for everyone.”

Liam achieved an ATAR of 92.9 and was first at Arden in Physics. Mrs Carolyn Imre, Head of Science, said, “Liam developed a deep interest in science and social justice for others. He became passionate about applying science to improve life and living standards for other people in the world.”

“Arden has given me opportunities to lead, explore my interests and equipped me with skills to be confident in the future,” reflected Liam.

Liam’s parents, Tony and Jennifer Baker, appreciated the love of learning fostered by Arden. “We were impressed by the commitment of his teachers and were pleased that the focus in Year 12 was not exclusively academic. Year 12 students were encouraged to take part in a range of co-curricular activities.”

During his HSC year Liam was a Prefect, helped lead the Social Justice Group and Science Club, and participated in AICES Swimming and Water Polo and the All Schools Triathlon.

Where to nowI will be studying Bachelor of Business Administration/Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) at Macquarie University.

Co-curricular activitiesI was involved in music programs and events. Music ensembles gave me great leadership opportunities and performance experiences. I was part of Arden’s first international Music Tour to China. I also participated in Crusaders and Debating.

Overall reflectionsArden helped me develop a passion for learning. The passion our teachers had for their respective subjects was engaging and encouraged me to learn more about the content by asking questions. That attitude to learning made me feel more prepared when it came to the HSC exams.

Advice for those still to finish schoolRemember to ask your teachers questions to help you understand the difficult topics. Plan your study time carefully to avoid having to catch up later.

Special achievementsBeing a School Captain and Birnam House Captain. Also, receiving The School Council Academic and Community Endeavour Award, the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award, Macquarie University PACE Award, Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and various sporting awards.

Wesley Adora will undertake a double degree of Biomedical Engineering/Medical Science at The University of Sydney. “My biggest goal is to study Medicine. However, I would also be happy to apply my love for mathematics and science into research and development of medical devices or teaching,” Wesley said.

Wesley achieved an ATAR of 97.2. He made the HSC All Rounders List, received an Arden Academic Excellence Award and was placed equal first at Arden in Geography. During his time at Arden, Wesley played Football, Futsal, Touch Football and Volleyball and was a member of the Senior Chapel Band. “I was blessed to have an opportunity to invest in people and relationships through the roles of Peer Support Leader, Prefect, Science Club leader and Mathematics Club member,” he said.

Wesley feels prepared for the future. “I’ve been instilled with a fearless spirit to continue to discover what I am really capable of, but most importantly, to trust in God’s plan and not to lean solely on my own understanding while doing so,” he shared.

GAP YEAR EXPANDS HORIZONS

“Gap years are such a good idea, even if you know what you

want to do after school. You get the chance to step out of your

comfort zone and try so many new things.”

JULIA TIMMINS-SMITH

Taking a Gap Year has been a popular choice for several Arden graduates. There are many good reasons for taking a Gap Year, and Arden students have cited a number of motivations: travel opportunities, work experience, building life skills, developing independence and resilience, and clarifying career directions.

Alana Townley came first at Arden in Design and Technology and was nominated for SHAPE for her Design and Technology major project. Given this success, she has a goal to become a Designer. She will be taking a Gap Year, working at Burgess Hills Girls School in England. “I hope to travel and gain skills and experience in caring for children,” Alana said.

Prior to studying a Bachelor of Politics and Economics at The University of Sydney, Alexandra Gore will be working at St. Catherine’s School in England. Part of her motivation is to clarify career goals. She hopes her Gap Year will help her discover whether she wants to work with children. However she has other goals as well: However, I want to travel to as much of Europe as possible, and spend time with my extended family,” she said.

Julia Timmins-Smith, recipient of the Pierre de Coubertin Award, plans to enter paramedicine or nursing but she too is planning to head to the United Kingdom for her Gap Year. She believes a Gap Year will help her gain independence. “Doing a Gap Year will hopefully help me to achieve confidence, grow as an individual, teach me how to live on my own and how to budget in order to travel around Europe,” she said.

Finally Claira Benn (pictured above), who placed first at Arden in Visual Arts, will be undertaking a one year program with Sydney Missionary and Bible College before studying Secondary Teaching at Macquarie University. Ultimately she wants to gain a pastoral/teaching position in a secondary school and believes a Gap Year will give her valuable vocational and life skills.

Arden graduates are certainly expanding their horizons and we wish them all the best on these adventures!

With an ATAR of 94.4, Oliver Hubbard, one of our School Captains and Sherwood House Captain, has accepted an early offer from Australian National University’s Spirit of Excellence Entrance Scheme in order to study a Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics. The science degree will have a focus on environmental management and science communication, enabling Oliver to pursue his dream of shaping “a fairer and more sustainable future.”

“Arden has fostered an environment to pursue leadership development, mentoring (Science Club, Peer Support, basketball coaching) and sport, alongside deep academic enquiry,” he said.

He received the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Youth Leadership and Teamwork Award, Academic Application Award and Coach of the Year Award, was a member of the SRC and was ranked first in Biology at Arden. He competed in the State and National Hillary Challenge, various public speaking competitions and participated  in the Cambodia and Vietnam Mission.

Oliver attended Arden from Pre-School. “Arden’s encouragement and development of flexibility, adaptability and resourcefulness will provide a stable foundation … Arden’s development of Christian values enriches the future, no matter what it holds,” he said.

Arden’s Class of 2016 has continued a tradition of aspiring to access tertiary education after completing secondary school.

As part of preparing our students for life beyond school, Arden’s Careers Adviser interviewed each student during the course of Year 12 to discuss their desired post school destination. The students were counselled about their plans and given guidance about the required documentation and how to prepare themselves to meet the necessary selection criteria. Many students applied for early offer entry schemes and 14% were successful.

Offers of places94% (59) of Arden students surveyed received offers of degree places in tertiary courses through the Universities Admission Centre (UAC), overseas or private providers. The remainder chose employment and TAFE study.

Majority of students gain entrance into preferred courses79% (50) of all 63 students surveyed were offered the exact post school destination that they had desired when interviewed. Some students changed their preference after being interviewed.

78% (45) of the 58 students choosing Commonwealth Supported Places at NSW/ACT and NZ Public Universities were offered their first choice of course, with the majority (72% or 42 students) being accepted into their preferred university.

47% (27) of the 57 students desiring entry into tertiary courses through UAC were offered places in courses despite having a lower ATAR rank than the published ATAR cut-off. In these cases, a variety of bonus points and early offer schemes were operating. Universities are increasingly using these schemes as an alternative means of assessing potential success. Arden supports applications for these schemes which include subject specific performance, educational access for disability or disadvantage, local area catchment schemes, leadership programs, Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS), and elite athletes and performers consideration.

Mrs Ariana Ryan, Head of English, described the cohort as persistent and interested, with “a desire to improve and perform to their best.”

“It is lovely to see some excellent personal results, achieved through hard work, determination and support from their teachers,” said Mr Joshua Harnwell, Director of Teaching and Learning.

The Class of 2016 exhibited an excellent attitude to work, showing resilience and maturity. Mr Trevor Bridgland, Head of Technological and Applied Studies, commented that, “The cohort really valued learning. This nurtured a teaching and learning environment that was as much about exploring their future as it was about a HSC course.”

Teachers also noted a pleasing camaraderie.

“Individually there were some outstanding results,” said Mr Simon Przydacz, Head of Senior School, “yet it was the collective, team approach which was most pleasing. Our HSC students have excelled in many co-curricular areas including music, sport, leadership and service, embodying the core values and the vision and mission of the School.”

The Class of 2016 should be commended on their achievements, borne out of a perseverance and determination to do their individual personal best, but also a team approach that saw them encouraging and supporting each other. Arden’s emphasis on balance meant that many students embraced a number of co-curricular opportunities during their HSC year.

“The Class of 2016 were close-knit, desiring success and keen to make the most of the opportunities offered

at Arden.”

Mr Trevor Bridgland also made mention of the support and encouragement the students had given each other. “They were also very teachable, reflective of the Arden culture and ready to listen to guidance in its various forms,” he said.

It was their attitude to others in need which impressed Mrs Carolyn Imre, Head of Science. “They had a real heart for improving the social justice of people in this world,” she said.

“Our graduates finish their time at Arden as confident, capable global citizens who will use their many experiences and skills to help transform the communities in which they will live and work. This is a broader and greater outcome than just the rank or number of the ATAR alone,” concluded Mr Simon Przydacz.
