Asphalt-Rubber Blending Systems

CEI EnterprisesSince 1991, CEI Enterprises has been designing industry-leading technologies for blending crumb rubber with asphalt cement for highway paving applications.

With over 30 Asphalt-Rubber blending plants delivered, CEI equipment designs incorporate leading technologies that have earned our #1 market share.

Asphalt-RubberAsphalt-Rubber is defined by ASTM definition D8-88 as:

“A blend of asphalt cement, reclaimed tire rubber and certain additives in which the rubber component is at least 15% by weight of the total blend and has reacted in the asphalt cement sufficiently to cause swelling of the rubber.”

In actual practice, the rubber component is normally 20% of the binder by weight.

Asphalt-Rubber Attributes• Better reflective crack resistance• Darker in color, providing enhanced pavement markings• Better water drainage and skid resistance• Cost effective, long-term performance that provides years of

maintenance-free road surfaces• Cost effective, a thinner lift requires less time to grind, less

material to lay and a short construction period• Can be used in any climatic area — hot or cold• Quieter than any other paving material available• Keeps tires out of landfills or stockpiles

Crumb-Rubber Blending Plants are designed with a wide range of options to suit particular users requirements.

Options are readily available to meet any specific needs and any customer preferences.

Asphalt-Rubber Blending

Basic Blending Criteria• Flow controls for virgin asphalt, crumb rubber and any

additives• Automated PLC-based control system for accurate

proportioning• High-shear mixing for product uniformity• High heat system in BTU and temperature to drive the

reactions• Blended asphalt-rubber sent to reaction tank at final

temperature• Compliance with all emissions standards

Crumb Rubber Hopper• Crumb rubber hopper

includes an air canon to insure free-flowing material

• Rotary feeder controls the specified volume to the mixing can

• Load cells accurately measure material by weight

Asphalt Supply & A-R Pumps

• Asphalt supply and A-R pumps are readily available designs

• AC supply pump is complete with a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD)

• Strainers protect against foreign and oversized material flows

High Capacity Heating• High BTU output:

5.0 MMBTU/HR• Hot oil temperatures:

600 degrees F maximum

Heat Exchanger

• Blended Asphalt-Rubber is delivered to the Reaction Tank at usage temperatures for high production.

• Virgin AC is controlled at temperature compensated mass flow rates for accurate weight proportioning.

Additive Systems• Liquid additives can be

added when required• The PLC control system

is designed to supply additives at a specified percentage addition rate

• A heated or non-heated storage tank is optional

Mixing Can• High shear mixer is used to

homogenize the crumb rubber particles with the liquid asphalt

• An overflow connection is provided for those times when moisture enters the system

• The tank has dual pump connections for operation and complete drainage

Automated PLC Controls• PLC system has flow

rate, temperature and density compensation.

• All valves are actuated and all drives have VFD drives.

• Control panel is “arc flash” designed for safety. Control house is optional.

• “Recipe-driven” logic simplifies operator functions, and flow schematics are provided in the PLC and on the panel.

Asphalt-Rubber Reaction Tank

Basic Reaction Criteria• High agitation for a homogenous product• Temperature control and measurement• Sampling capability for quality assurance• Separate controls per compartment• Accurate flow regulation for the plant supply• Documentation of actual performance

Agitation and Heat Control• Multiple coil layers for

effective heat transfer• Shrouded high-speed

auger for pumping• Low-level heat shutoff• Individual controls in

each compartment

Auger Agitation• Large coil area is used

for heat transfer• Auger provides

material agitation and flushing of the coil bundles

Auger Design• If the coils are clean,

heat transfers, reducing maintenance costs and allowing for maximum production rates.

• If the coils plug, you not only lose heat but also capacity.

Production Capacity

• Nominal continuous capacity ratings per 24 hour operating day• Compliant with specifications for reaction time• Available material to supply a plant - plant piping may be

insufficient for the available flow volumes

Reaction TankSingle

CompartmentDouble

CompartmentTriple

Compartment

Tons Per Hour 10 to 15 15 to 22 25 to 35

Capacity and Emissions• Triple compartments for high

production• Vent condensers with external

cooling• Smog Hogs to control final blue

smoke fumes

Plant Supply• Mass flow meter• Ports for calibration, drum

plant and batch plant• Sample testing valve• Ability to transfer between

each compartment

Asphalt-Rubber Plants• Batch plants, drum plants,

or both.• If you need high

production, then go with triple-compartment designs.

• Emission regulations — NO PROBLEM.

Asphalt-RubberFNF Construction has been presented the 2004 Sheldon G. Hayes Award for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement. This NAPA award is a two-year process with projects over 50,000 tons of HMA.This is the first and only Asphalt-Rubber project to reach this level of industry recognition.
