Vice President – Technical Report (May 2001)

May 2001 Newsletter) April 19, 2001

By: Jun Padilla, CIPE Many thanks to Mr. Todd Noce of Mason Industries, our last month’s Technical Seminar Speaker. As expected, our half-day seminar on “Seismic Restraints of Mechanical and Electrical Systems” proved to be both informative and very interesting. Also thanks to all the attendees and their respective employers, who encourage continuing education and, for their continued support of ASPE (listed alphabetically): Agilent Technologies BWF Consulting Engineers C&B Engineers Fard Engineers, Inc. - Chamberlain/Painter Flack + Kurtz, Inc. Glumac International Horn Engineers L.J. Kruse Company Laws and Associates MDS For those who missed the seminar, Mr. Noce is gracious enough to offer assistance should you have any questions regarding seismic restraints. You may contact him at (714) 535-2727 or you may visit Mason Industries’ website at www.masonanaheim.com. In other news, next month will be our last ASPE monthly meeting for the season. We have scheduled Mr. Wil Wilkes, Regional Manager for Grundfos Pumps to be our guest speaker. The topic will be “Variable Speed Booster Pumps”. A number of booths at last year’s Nashville ASPE Convention were representing this type of system. There is an indication in the industry that this system is gaining much popularity in various applications, for various reasons. I hope you will take advantage of this presentation and find out why and how this system may be the right option for your projects. Hope to see you there! As always, any suggestions on topics and/or guest speakers are always welcome. You may contact any of the Board Members for suggestions or you may contact or send a fax directly to me at: Jun Padilla, CIPE - VP Technical c/o Fard Engineers, Inc. – Chamberlain/Painter (925) 932-5505 ph (925) 932-0555 fax [email protected]

HARRY HAPP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP When Harry Happ past away a few years ago, his family requested that the Harry Happ Memorial Scholarship be started and perpetuated in his honor. The Family of Harry Happ generously provided funds to start the scholarship in hopes that a scholarship could be given each year to a student studying mechanical systems for buildings. Harry served as a Board member in both the San Francisco and the Silicon Valley Chapters giving a lot of time and effort to the Chapters and was proud to be a member of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers. Harry was a Past President of the San Francisco Chapter and would be pleased to see deserving students encouraged to continue on in the plumbing industry. Cal Laws, Executor of the Harry Happ Scholarship Fund, has made arrangements with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, to fund a scholarship that is to be awarded to a qualified applicant each spring. To continue this scholarship fund, we need the help of the members of the San Francisco Chapter of ASPE and all friends of Harry's to fund the scholarship on a regular or yearly basis. The donations are tax deductible. If you would like to generously participate in this worth while program, please write your tax deducti-ble check to: The San Francisco Chapter of ASPE for The Harry Happ Memorial Scholarship Fund. Checks will be gratefully accepted by Cal Laws at the ASPE Chapter meetings or can be mailed to Cal in care of Laws and Associates, Inc. 433 Airport Blvd, Suite 326, Burlingame, CA 94010. If you have any fund raising ideas for the scholarship, please contact Cal Laws at 650-348-8433 or any Board Member of the San Francisco Chapter of ASPE.

ATTENTION ALL ASPE CHAPTER MEMBERS

PM Engineer is now accepting nominations for its Engineering Firm of the Year award. The award was established to identify and honor an outstanding plumbing or mechanical engineering com-pany. Six criteria will be used to select what best exemplifies an engineering firm committed to being the best at what it does in the field of plumbing, piping, hydronics or sprinklers. They are: Innovation in design Customer satisfaction Ability to meet schedules Industry involvement Completeness and thoroughness (in regard to projects) Community involvement PME’s Engineering Firm of the Year will receive permanent recognition and be honored in a fea-ture article in the November 2001 issue. Nominated companies can be consulting, specifying or design engineering firms. A firm’s size in dollar volume of work or number of employees is not a consideration. Rather, the award seeks to identify companies that strive to be the best at what they do—regardless of size—and that constantly seek to improve and enhance all aspects of their organization. To nominate your company or another company, submit 3 copies of a detailed statement about why you feel the firm is deserving of this honor. The deadline for submissions is September 1, 2001. Include the name, phone number and e-mail address of a contact person at the company. Your nomination, in triplicate, can be sent to: Kelly Johnson 3150 River Rd., Ste. 101 Des Plaines, IL 60018 Phone: (847) 297-3576 Fax: (847) 297-8371 E-mail: [email protected].
