Some months ago Carol Jernigan came to the CL&M Ministry Team with a wonderful offer: She would like to volunteer her time and skills to establish a Faith Community Nursing program at JPC – formerly referred to as Parish Nursing. All appropriate ministry teams and the session as a whole have given enthusiastic support to this new effort. The Shalom Circle has contributed generously to the ministry, as well. I have said both “volunteer” and “contributed.” Here’s the deal: Carol, a registered nurse, will, indeed, volunteer her time and she will work under the auspices of the Mountain States Health Alliance Faith Community Nursing Program. One of the requirements of the agency behind the program is that congregation offer reimbursement for mileage and any supplies needed. Fair enough. We have cobbled together funding ($700) for the remainder of 2015, and we will assess Carol’s use of those funds to determine an appropriate line item for 2016. It is important to understand what Faith Community Nursing is and is not, as well. As a F.C. Nurse, Carol’s role will be limited to health education, advocacy, and interpretation. She will continue to do things like teach yoga. She will schedule blood pressure screenings and opportunities to learn more about health/wellness issues. She can visit us in the hospital and in homes to help interpret diagnoses and treatments. When she has concerns, she can refer us – urge us, even – to schedule appointments with our doctors. What can Carol not do? By law and by insurance company guidelines, she cannot diagnose illnesses. She cannot prescribe, recommend, or administer medications (prescription or over-the- counter). Nor can she draw blood. Things like wound care are also issues for doctors or home health nurses. As a Faith Community Nurse, Carol is not a clinician. She is a minister whose focus encompasses the well-being of bodies, minds, and souls. We will hold a commissioning service for Carol later in June. She will begin with her first big job, however, on Sunday, June 14 when she heads to Kentucky as part of the Appalachian Service Project mission trip. We are very excited about the possibilities of this new ministry at JPC. And we are grateful to Carol Jernigan for offering to serve God in this capacity through this congregation. Peace, Allen

Hi! I’m Carol Jernigan, the new Faith Community Nurse at Jonesborough Presbyterian Church. Many of you already know me from my Gentle Yoga Classes on Tuesday mornings in the Fellowship Hall. I am looking forward to meeting every one as I take on this new role.

I will be traveling with the youth on their ASP Mission Trip to Harlan County, Kentucky on June 13th. Typically I take the role of the Safety Officer while I’m on these trips making sure everyone stays hydrated, sufficiently rested and apply the occasional Band-Aid when necessary.

Beginning June 27th, I will provide blood pressure screenings on the last Sunday of the summer months. Please feel free to drop by the Fellowship Hall before and after the Sunday School Hours. Gentle Yoga will begin on Tuesday, July 14th at 11 am. This is a gentle stretch class where many of the poses can be done while sitting.

Yoga Workout A new class for a more strenuous practice will begin on Thursday, July 16th at 10 am. This is for individuals who don’t mind getting up and down off the floor. Mats and props are provided for both classes. Feel free to bring your own props as well. Classes will run for 6 weeks, July 14th – August 20th.

If you should find you or a family member hospitalized, please let your admitting nurse know that you would like a visit and Mountain States Hospitals will notify me that you have been hospitalized. I will then call and arrange a visit or you can contact me through the Church Office or on my cell phone at 901- 485-4280.

If you are interested in participating in this new ministry and would like to be a part of the Faith &Wellness Team at JPC please contact Allen, Corrine Parnell or me. I would enjoy hearing your thoughts and ideas for this new endeavor.

10 Cents-A-Meal Every Family Lunch Sunday, Jonesborough Presbyterian Church receives the 10 Cents-a-Meal Offering. This money is sent to Holston Presbytery. Churches in our presbytery may then apply for grants to support local, regional or global efforts that address immediate hunger issues. In the past, JPC has applied for and received grants to support the work of the JAMA Food Bank. On Family Lunch Sundays, there is a basket on the credenza to your right as you make your way to the buffet table in the fellowship hall for donations to help with the 10 Cents-a-Meal.

Thank you for your continuing and generous support of this mission.

Family Luncheon Note Please allow all visitors with their hosts, and anyone having difficulty standing or

walking move to the front of the serving line during our luncheon. Thank you.
