About Our ASP Ministry

The Appalachia Service Project was founded by Glenn “Tex” Evans in 1969. Evans, a United Methodist minister and former missionary, established ASP’s first work camp center in 1969 at Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. In the first year, they repaired four homes. More than 30 years later, youth from across the country have assisted in this summer home repair program. Last year, more than 13,000 volunteers repaired 389 homes.

The Appalachia Service Project (ASP) has played a major role in the youth ministry of Metropolitan Memorial since the project’s inception in 1969. ASP addresses severe shortages of decent housing in the country’s poorest regions through a simple but effective ministry, one that confronts need – not with studies or grants – but with muscle, sweat and shared hope in the Resurrection. The money raised during this auction will send three crews of our Senior High Youth to West Virginia for a life-changing experience. Our dates for serving in mission with ASP are June 25-July 2, 2011. Metropolitan has been serving in Appalachia for more than 35 years.

About Our Heifer Int’l Ministry

Heifer Global Village at Overlook Farm in Rutland, MA– part of Heifer International

After a two-year hiatus, Metropolitan’s youth will return to Massachusetts this year. The Heifer Overlook Farm is one method that Heifer, a non-profit organization working to end world hunger and poverty in a way that cares for the earth, uses Overlook to raise awareness of hunger and poverty.

The Heifer Global Village is one of the many facilities seeking to promote peace, justice and understanding among the world's people. The experience-based Heifer Global Village programs explore the issues of global poverty and hunger while challenging people to examine their own habits, consumption patterns and beliefs to become more responsible global citizens.

Our Youth will be challenged to examine their own habits, consumption patterns, and beliefs to become responsible citizens. They will feed and care for many of the animals that Heifer International uses around the world, including sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, water buffalo, alpaca, llama, and a camel.

Special Thanks Dear Metropolitan Community, It has been my pleasure this past semester to hang out with the youth of Metropolitan. We have enjoyed many outings, lock-ins, and wonderful shared moments in our regular Sunday morning and Sunday evening times together. The youth love to have a good time in fellowship with one another, but I am inspired by their desire to reach out and serve others as well. It is a wonderful tradition in this church that the youth year after year attend ASP and other mission opportunities. Service is obviously a vital part of the youth’s faith. This past October for youth Sunday, the youth led the services with the theme of “If we are the body” and these mission opportunities allow the youth to be the hands and feet of Christ to others. I am excited to lead the trip this year and have my very first ASP experience. The youth have already been educating me about all the wonderful experiences I will have as we all prepare for another great trip this summer. Heifer International allows our youth to be challenged to look outside of their own environments. The Heifer Global Village provides the youth with a concrete encounter to understand what a typical family in another culture experiences in a 24-hour period. They will not only witness, but also live in different settings to learn the challenges of economic, political, and environmental situations in other countries. The annual auction provides the youth with an opportunity to connect and share with the rest of the congregation the experiences they grow up looking forward to and as formational experiences in their faith journeys. The auction provides an overwhelming majority of the funds that make these experiences possible for our youth. Your support is deeply valuable and truly allows the youth to see the support and love of their church family. Thank you for your contributions and donations to the youth and for helping to make the auction such a success year after year. I would like to thank the staff of Metropolitan for helping me understand and prepare for the auction. Specifically, I would like to thank Jimmy for his partnership in the youth program of our church and to Anita Seline for her loving guidance each week as we work together for all the children of our church community. Helen Simon’s constant energy and enthusiasm to be available for any task at hand has been invaluable to getting things together. I would also like to thank those who are leading us today in a variety of ways: Pam Settlage and Helen Simon (our accountants), Craig Gildner (our auctioneer), and all those have done many things behind the scenes. Thank you to all the volunteers who weekly give of their time and energy to be present with the youth. Lastly, thank you for coming today. Your contributions not only make a difference for our youth but then reaches beyond Metropolitan as our youth go out in the world to serve. We deeply appreciate your support.
