Much has changed over the ASO’s 75 years but one thing remains constant and that is our passion and commitment to making great music. Pictured is the artistic interpretation of the music—an ever changing, multifaceted form, always refined and intriguing, sometimes bold, sometimes brooding but always beautiful, depicting the sound and the soul of the orchestra. You may not see it but it is always there. It emanates from the instruments and fills the room. It is why we’re here and what we love—the music!

Seventy-five years represents a milestone that any orchestra in the world would proudly celebrate. Since its inaugural concert in 1936, the ASO has a long list of significant achievements to look back on, and a future to look forward to which is bright indeed.

We acknowledge the anniversary throughout the Master Series, recapping some of the works that featured in the ASO’s first-ever concerts, and celebrating Australia’s creativity and cultural contribution by bringing a special focus to some of the best music by Australia’s own composers. A particular highlight of contemporary Australian talent will be Adelaide's premiere performance of Brett Dean’s magisterial The Lost Art of Letter Writing, winning the world’s most prestigious composition prize, The Grawemeyer. Since joining the ASO, I have been delighted to make strong connections with a range of Australian composers and I’m very pleased to recapitulate some of the great pieces I’ve discovered from composers Ross Edwards, Carl Vine and the late Richard Meale.

In 2011, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa headlines a splendid array of visiting artists and guest conductors in a special Gala performance. Other inspiring artists who are returning to Adelaide after earlier great successes here are the pianists Nikolai Demidenko, Freddy Kempf and Cédric Tiberghien and violinist Tasmin Little, while pianist Simon Trpceski, and cellist Alban Gerhardt will be exciting new discoveries for Adelaide audiences.

The ASO will again be at the forefront of the highly anticipated 2nd Adelaide International Cello Festival ‘Cellissimo’. One of the world’s legendary cellists, in favoured Rostropovich pupil David Geringas will be performing exclusively with the orchestra. This is a major coup for Adelaide.

Of course, we must not overlook the splendid talents of our own Australian soloists and conductors. Simone Young instilled great zest into the orchestra in her ASO debut in 2009, and we look forward to her return. I am sure we will all keenly anticipate the return visit of David Elton, our former principal trumpet, now making his name as a distinguished soloist. Our 75th Anniversary Gala concerts also celebrate Australian talent by featuring ASO soloists.

2011 also brings us closer to the culmination of our cycle of Mahler symphonies, with the Fifth and Sixth symphonies. We know that you have been inspired by encounters with these masterworks and will continue to be!

The Season is made complete by a full range of activities and concerts which bring the orchestra closer to its community. Santos Symphony Under the Stars is back as well as the opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy the ASO in Alfresco and a special family concert. Our Showcase Series is firmly established and not only provides the orchestra with such a diverse range of repertoire but audiences will always find a highlight in their genre of music, from jazz, to rock to movie music and even musical comedy!

Our special Gala performances, marvelous Master Series, along with our ventures into popular music, our Community Series and our Education program are full of appealing offerings which I hope you will take advantage of, making the ASO an integral part of your life.

Arvo VolmerChief Conductor & Music Director

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the ASO on 75 years of superb performances.

As an energy pioneer that has been powering South Australia with natural gas for more than 40 years, Santos is very pleased to support an organisation that brings its own brand of energy to this state.

Our principal partnership with the ASO— now in its thirteenth year—is a significant part of our widespread contribution to the South Australian community.

The ASO is an internationally-renowned orchestra that truly enriches the community through the talent, innovation and energy that it brings to every performance.

I am looking forward to the 2011 Season, and hope to see you at Elder Park in February for the Santos Symphony Under The Stars. Please enjoy the ASO’s 75th year.

As the sun dipped down over the hauntingly beautiful Yalkarinha Gorge in the Flinders Ranges, internationally acclaimed opera star, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, took centre stage with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in Opera in the Outback, in 1988. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa enjoyed Opera in the Outback so much, that she returned to the event again in 1997, regarding it as one of her career highlights.

Now Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, arguably the most famous soprano in the world, is set to return to South Australia and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, a major coup for Adelaide audiences and the orchestra, as part of its 75th year anniversary.

I cannot think of a more fitting artist for the ASO to perform with in such an historic and celebratory year for the orchestra, Kiri’s voice is still second to none. The performance will be elegant, glamorous, moving and will have everyone talking’, said The Advertiser’s opera critic Ewart Shaw.

Saturday 19 February, 8.00 pmFestival Theatre

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has sung on the great opera stages of the world, performed for royalty, top celebrities and inspired generations of opera singers around the globe. In 2004, she launched The Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation, a charity which aims to give support and financial aid to the new generation of young New Zealand singers and musicians.

Dame Kiri gained legendary status almost overnight after her sensational debut as the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 1971. From then, she moved rapidly into the front rank of international opera. Of her return to the Adelaide stage Dame Kiri says, What a thrill it will be for me to once again be performing with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, I have fond memories of Adelaide and their wonderful orchestra’.

Here is a chance to reunite with or discover for the first time one of the true stars of the music world.

‘Resplendent in flowing blue, Kiri Te Kanawa walked, sang and bowed with impeccable poise, and she was loved as if she were a princess from the land of the long white cloud …’ sydney morning herald

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1936 as a 17 player permanent ensemble that played for radio broadcasts and also performed public orchestral concerts. Its concert activity followed a tradition dating back to the late nineteenth century with such orchestras as Herman Heinicke’s Grand Orchestra and the more recent South Australian Orchestra. Mr William Cade (pictured), an Adelaide born musician who had worked in London with Sir Thomas Beecham, was the orchestra's first conductor. This core ensemble formed the basis of an augmented orchestra that performed half a dozen or so regular public concerts at the Adelaide Town Hall.

The ASO’s only choral program in 2011 highlights some of Australia’s most beautiful and angelic voices, including those of Sara Macliver and Sally-Anne Russell in two of Johann Sebastian Bach’s greatest works—the Cantata—‘A Mighty Fortress is our God’ whose eloquent words by Martin Luther himself contain the bedrock of Bach’s Protestant faith, and the irrepressibly joyous and exuberant Magnificat, in which Bach’s soul does, indeed, ‘magnify the Lord’. The distinctive and deeply-felt music of Arvo Pärt amplifies the program’s spiritual dimension with his latest masterwork.

Now it’s the violin aficionados turn to rave! Tasmin Little’s 2011 appearances will instantly rekindle memories of her 2007 performances of Elgar’s titanic Violin Concerto. This time, the violinist dubbed ‘an international star’ by The Independent, performs Brahms’ equally profound and moving concerto, a work which enshrines the composer’s soul. Written while still a teenager, Shostakovich’s first symphony is a dazzling display of the young prodigy’s talent, revealing an abundance of clever musical imagination and achieving immediate popu- larity for its sparkling and irrepressible vitality.

It received an ecstatic reaction at its premiere in 2002 and has continued to enrapture audiences and follows Richard Meale’s imaginative and colourful Three Miró Pieces. Then, savour the dark romantic beauty and powerful passion of Dvorák’s Seventh Symphony, regarded by many as his greatest, about which the composer himself wrote: ‘… I think of nothing but my work, which must be capable of stirring the world ...’ How brilliantly he succeeded!

The ASO is thrilled to welcome back David Elton, former principal trumpet, now making a splash as a brilliant soloist, in a concerto by the master orchestrator, Richard Mills, considered an Australian classic. A perfect Gallic reverie with a touch of the erotic. Debussy’s floating Prélude à L’après—midi d’un faune, the intoxicating rhythm of Ravel’s Boléro and La Valse and the sounds of Spain in Ibéria will hypnotise audiences. A highlight of 2011, this concert features Brett Dean’s Violin Concerto, subtitled The Lost Art of Letter Writing, a work which won the world’s most prestigious composition prize, The Grawemeyer. This moving homage to the hand-written letter, dedicated to the work’s champion, Frank Peter Zimmermann, is both a lament for the ‘lost art’ of domestic writing and a meditation on great letters penned by people as various as Brahms and Ned Kelly.

The exquisitely tender Adagietto of Mahler’s Symphony No.5, immortalized by Visconti in his film version of Death in Venice, has been a defining moment for many music lovers and inspired their ongoing love affair with Mahler’s music. But there’s much more in this wonderful musical arc, which begins with dark turbulence and ends in a blaze of optimism and glory. Cédric Tiberghien, one of the most exciting pianists on the international circuit, returns to Adelaide to perform Mozart’s K466 Piano Concerto, one of only two written in a minor key, with intense qualities which transcend the emotional boundaries of the eighteenth century and make it a favourite among pianists—and audiences.

The ASO’s interpretations of Wagner, Sibelius and more recently Gustav Mahler have earned the orchestra kudos and a reputation as a great orchestra. ‘In the more than 20 years I’ve worked with the ASO—in symphonic, family, educational, choral and crossover concerts as well as opera—one thing stands out: they can play anything. These musicians are amazing and Adelaide is so lucky to have an orchestra of this calibre and flexibility’, said ABC Classic FM presenter Graham Abbott.

The ASO’s ETSA Utilities Education Program is recognised nationally as innovative and creative. It is designed for young people and families to discover and engage in creative musical learning experiences that can only come from a live symphony orchestra. Committed to fostering the appreciation of classical music, the ASO offers exciting programs that open the world of orchestral music to students from early childhood to secondary school.

ElectraNet Touring EnsemblesMiss Lily String QuartetPerformed by the ASO’s String Quartet, based on Margaret Wild’s picture book, Miss Lily’s Fabulous Pink Feather Boa, combined with Quentin Grant’s original score, journey with the little Potoroo as she befriends a myriad of Australian animals and the mysterious and magical feather boa. Brought to life in the classroom, an up close and personal version of a beautiful picture book and rich experience of narration with string instruments.

Brass ZooThe Brass Zoo offers a fun and informative look into the Brass section of the orchestra. Visiting classrooms all over Adelaide the ASO’s Brass Quintet demonstrate brass instruments by playing some familiar classics, and then turn them over to the children for them to have a go.

WindstormDesigned for young musicians in Secondary School, Windstorm involves an ASO Wind Ensemble visiting classrooms to explore the beautiful workings of the woodwind instruments. Students can ask questions and gain feedback from professional musicians in an informative masterclass style atmosphere. Proudly supported by:

Toe Tapping ToddlersCome and join the members of the ASO’s string trio and presenter Trish Storer as they play music that encourages you and your children to dance, jump, march and sing along. This program encourages listening skills, learning, and an interaction with music in a fun educational environment. Part of the ElectraNet Touring Ensembles.
