One of Australia’s National Living Treasures, Professor Peter Doherty shared the 1996 Nobel Prize with Professor Rolf Zinkernagel in Physiology or Medicine for his ground breaking work on unravelling the mechanisms of how lymphocytes recognise both foreign and self antigens in order to kill virus infected cells. Professor Doherty’s illustrious body of work formed the foundations for the modern revolution in cancer immunotherapy. In 2017, the ASMR launched the Peter Doherty Leading Light Award to recognise the transformational work being undertaken by Australia’s mid- career health and medical researchers. Now in its third year, the award will recognise a single piece of work undertaken by a mid-career researcher. The award is open to all areas of health and medical research, and can include, but is not limited to, clinical, public health or biomedical research. Instructions to Applicants Applicants must be between 5 and 12 years post-PhD (with career interruptions taken into account), and must be an ASMR member at the time of submission . In order to be considered, please submit the following for consideration by the assessment panel: Description of the single piece of work (100 words maximum) - Describe the single piece of work, and the applicant’s contribution to it. Research impact statement (300 word maximum)- Describe the quality and impact of the paper and work within

o Knowledge impact- demonstrating the benefits emerging from adoption, adaption or use of the knowledge arising from the work

o Health impact- demonstrating the benefits of translation of the work to changes in practiceo Policy impact- demonstrating how the work leads to Improvements in societal and

community health.Please note, this statement must be written in a style that is intelligible to a non-scientific audience.

Curriculum Vitae (2 page maximum)- The applicant’s CV will be reviewed for track record relative to opportunity (please include career

disruptions to justify equivalent years post-doctoral)- Please start with an executive summary of achievements (150-200 words)- Also include:

o Degrees/qualifications and date awarded, current position and institutiono Awards/Achievements/Recognition/Fundingo Higher degree, honours and undergraduate supervision

- Scientific leadership - such as institutional roles, conference organisation, workshops, mentoring, etc.

JudgingAn assessment panel consisting of the ASMR President, senior researchers, and community members will review and rank applications based on the:

1) Quality and impact of the applicants piece of work (60%) 2) Applicant’s track record relative to opportunity (20%) 3) Level of scientific leadership the applicant has displayed (10%) 4) Degree of community outreach and service to the scientific community shown (10%)

The decision of the judging panel is final. The winner will be notified no later than Friday 18 th October 2019. The winner will present their work in a 10 minute seminar covering translation and impact of the research at the ASMR National Scientific Conference held in Fremantle, 20-21 November, and must be available to attend to be eligible for the award.
