This weekend we continue reading from the Letter of Saint James, we have heard from Saint James throughout September. The person to whom this letter is ascribed can scarcely be one of the two members of the Twelve who bore the name James, for he is not identified as an apostle but only as “slave of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ”. This Saint James most probably refers to the third New Testament personage named James, a relative of Jesus who is usually called “brother of the Lord”. He was the leader of the Jewish Christian community in Jerusalem whom Paul acknowledged as one of the “pillars”. In Acts he appears as the authorized spokesman for the Jewish Christian position in the early Church. According to the Jewish historian Josephus, he was stoned to death by the Jews under the high priest Ananus II in A.D. 62.

Today’s passage from James shifts from instruction on how to live and proper dispositions underlying a righteous life to warnings for those who ignore such teaching. Immediately before today’s Second Reading, the author has cautioned against overly confident preparation for the future, since all things are divinely ordained. In each present moment, one ought to do God’s will, and whoever fails to do what he or she knows to be right commits sins.

James addresses the warning that follows in today’s Scripture to those who expend great effort amassing wealth in this world. Again he stresses that the present world is transitory, and so the attempt to store up riches for the future is fruitless. Further, those who have cheated others in order to secure luxury for themselves will find God on the side of the poor who suffered because of their grasping for wealth increasing riches and pleasure for oneself at the cost of fair treatment of others is momentary; God’s just recompense will last forever.

God’s Just Recompense (taken from Commentary On Today’s Second Reading) By: Kelly Flores

This year has been exciting and joyful at Saint Lawrence Elementary and Middle School so far. Some very special, positive changes for the School are the return of former members of the Community. One of those special returners is Mrs. Stein! Mrs. Stein taught Kindergarten at SLEMS from 2004-2011, her last class is the current 8th grade. Mrs.

Stein has stayed in contact with the Community over the years, joining in Graduation and other celebrations and events. Her new role at SLEMS is our librarian. When asked about her new adventure Mrs. Stein said “I’m very proud to return to my home at SLEMS after my retirement, hoping to make a difference in a small way. I was delighted when Mrs. Lares suggested I might work in the library. I hope to enhance the curriculum by inspiring young readers to love books. I’ve always felt that part of my mission is to create a warm, loving learning environment that is safe, nurturing and fun”. We feel very blessed to have Mrs. Stein back with us weekly, and look forward to the wonderful lessons and joyful books we will be sharing during library time with her!

The Next Marriage Encounter Weekend is November 9-11, 2018 in San Jose.

Pbro. Santiago Martin
