Asikkala and Vääksy

• Asikkala Was established in 1848.

• The population is approximately 8500.

• The area of Asikkala is– 756 km2, of which the

watersurface 192 km2.– The shore-line is 581 km.

• Vääksy is the vivid center of Asikkala.

• Vääksy is known of the canal

which devides the village in two

sides.• Vääksy canal is one of the

busiest inland leisure waterways in Europe.

• There is also another, much

larger canal in the village of

Kalkkinen.

Youth Council in Asikkala

• For the period 2013-2014 there has been elected 8 members to Asikkala Youth Council and also two members in reserve.

• Their task is to stand for the benefits of youngsters and process activities and happenings with other operators.

• Each of them also take place in different municipal boards.

• Those are the first steps to municipal life and principals.

• They also represent good manners and want to prevent teasing and discrimination between students.

The establisher of Rapala industries Lauri Rapala was born in 1905. Poor family earned their living with forestry work and fishing.

To get a little bit more savings he started to make wobblers.He made his first famous lure in 1936.

At the end of 1940s Rapala family started the serial production at home.

In United States the Rapala lures became really popular when there happened to be a Rapala article in the same Life magazine where was the tragic life story of Marilyn Monroe in 1962. It literally exploded the markets in United States.

Rapala has sold 350 hundred million lures all around the world.

In Asikkala Rapala has been most inportant private employer from the sixties and though it nowadays is an international company, it still has a great value to Asikkala.

• Conducts raw water from Asikkala open lake to the capital area of Finland.

• The tunnel is 120 km long, 4,8m high and 3,8m wide.

• The starting point of the tunnel is 36 m higher than the end of the tunnel, so the water flows in the tunnel by gravity.

• The building of the tunnel started in 1973 and the tunnel was completed in 1982.

• The tunnel is in the bedrock and it´s average depth is from 50 to 70 meters trom the ground level.

• The tunnel brings clean water to more than a million people.

• The water flows in average ten days in the tunnel.

• Partly because the tunnel, the water of Päijänne is clean and drinkable.
