From the minute they stepped through the front door, PeggyHull and her husband John Glover saw the potential of this1935 home in the heart of the Museum District. Good bones.

great natural light and wonderful architecturalmoldings made for a great start for a remodel.

The focus immediately went to an existingsmall kitchen with a narrow useless back hallway space. A breakfast nook was createdwith the addition of a bay window which

now provides a view of a lush English garden.Natural light was also added with an additional

window at the sink.The designer/homeowner created a multifunc-

tional kitchen with gourmet appliances,breakfast nook, utility closet and bever-

age bar all within the original footprintof the space. Custom block panel cabinets with glass

fronts painted in a putty color provide a great neutral withthe soft palette of handmade Italian subway tile backsplash.“Sparkle” comes from the use of stainless steel appliances,an industrial island and halogen lighting. The result is acharming updated vintage style that is in keeping with theoriginal architecture of thischarming home. Functional and pretty baths

are created within smallspaces with the use of insetmedicine cabinets, marbleand hand-painted wall coverings.

The biggest changecomes in the master bed-room where the newlyvaulted ceiling with octago-nal window allows views ofthe sky.

Nestled amid the beautiful oak treesof West University Place, this home was

originally constructed in 1987. The current owners pur-chased it in the summer of 2003 after moving toHouston with their two children. They were particularlyinterested in the comfortable environment provided bythe covered back porch and intimate backyard alongwith the open floor plan of the house that wouldaccommodate their young family’s needs.

Rather than go through the challenge and time-consuming effort associated with a new constructionproject, the owners chose to embark on a completetransformation and renovation of the existing home’sinteriors. A major appeal of the residence was that itprovided an excellent foundation and an opportunity tocreate a custom feel that would reflect the owners’ style.

Renovation began with the kitchen because thehomeowners are avid cooks and required a more func-tional workplace. They set out to design a space thatreflects their Louisiana heritage and now serves as theprimary gathering place for friends and family. Alongwith the kitchen, the master bath was completelyredesigned as well as the remaining baths undergoingupdates.

The owners also completed an outdoor living areaunder the covered porch that remains one of theirfavorite spaces in the home. Finally, once most of the home had been updated, the owners completed several other initiatives including a new exerciseroom and custom closets.

As a registered and licenseddesigner for more than 11years and business owner formore than nine, AudreyDrought-Mitchell’s main focushas been to demonstrate thehighest level of professionalismthrough excellent businesspractices while maintainingopen communication with bothher employees and clients.

Affectionately referred to during construction as “SuburbanRiver Oaks,” this “new-old House” in Bellaire is styled after aclassic home typically found in the affluent neighborhood ofRiver Oaks, but designed to be appropriate for the family-ori-ented neighborhood of Bellaire. All the interior and exteriordetailing reflects the age of proud craftsmanship. Brickdetailing, interior moldings and millwork, high ceilings andother finish details establish this home as an example ofexceptionally designed residential architecture amid a plethora of stucco neo-Mediterranean boxes.

The homeowners are a young couple with two school-agechildren. He is an art dealer; she is an active mom who grewup in a family of homebuilders and has had her own successbuilding the occasional house for her family and as specialprojects for sale.

The house was intentionally designed as a “family-centric”house meant for entertaining—one where the kids would feelcomfortable having friends over and where the grownupscould entertain and feel equally at ease. The kitchen andfamily room were designed with classic details including custom-built cabinets, a true beadboard ceiling, Calacattamarble countertops with a custom butcher-block island andFrench doors to the rear brick terrace—with all views backingonto the nature reserve behind.

Robert Reid, ASID IDC, andDarin Brooks, RID, formedbrooks • reid studio in 2002,after relocating from NewYork City. Intent on providinga fresh, new design perspec-tive to Houston, they havewon many design awards fortheir diverse projects. Recentlycompleted and in-the-worksprojects include numerous pri-vate residences, thePoggenpohl Kitchen DesignStudio, the new Chocolate Barin Rice Village and the public interiors and manyresidences in the 2727 Kirby residential tower.

The main-floor powder room was inspired by a Parisianapartment—with paneled walls and ceilings lacqueredblack and a black and white stone floor.

With an incredible collection of art to display, thedesigners also ensured that rooms were laid out to permitviewing of artwork from multiple perspectives.

The Challenge: to create a “vacation home” as an additionto the clients’ primary residence. This young couple with fourchildren wished to create an entertainment space, not onlyfor the kids, but for friends as well.

The Solution: Entertaining is important to the family, andthey requested a boutique hotel feel for this addition. Thedesign team has sprinkled fun and unexpected accentsthroughout the home. The pool bath features a uniquebubble mirror and warm and inviting colors (on the tour,note the blue glass “pebble” accent in the shower – notseen in these photos).

The guest quarters have a hotel-suite layout and flowfrom bedroom to kitchenette to closet area. The kitchenettehas two-toned wood stains to enhance the look of the upperand lower cabinetry and the faux-bois furniture adds to thenatural feel of the guest room. With Arabescato marble, aframeless glass enclosure for the steam shower, and gor-geous solid granite vessel sinks we created a serene guestbath.

A gorgeous mica wall covering makes the theatre roompower bath the jewel of the home. An etched glass lavatoryis lighted from below, and Murano glass sconces are theperfect complement to the shimmering walls.

The family uses the outdoor kitchen nearly every week-end. A simple, efficient layout using Viking appliances offerseverything they need for successful outdoor entertaining.

With a bachelor’s degree instudio art from the Universityof Texas and a master’sdegree in architecture fromthe Gerald D. Hines college ofArchitecture, Laura Umanskybrings classic architecturaltraining and internationaldesign experience as well as apassion for absolute qualityand individual expression tothe design market. She alsobrings something else, herown retail boutique, the LauraU Collection, to Houston.

Sharon Staley brings more than 40 years experience in theindustry to her full-service design firm where she handles awide range of residential, hospitality, commercial and newhome construction projects. She grew up in the business—her father was a president of the Furniture Association andowned his own furniture stores in Houston, and she carriesthat same passion for exquisite furnishings today. She is anASID Fellow, former president of ASID TGCC and has wonnumerous ASID design awards.

In this relaxing oasis away from the hectic pace of the city, “garden rooms” were planned throughout the back yard.There are four areas with tables and chairs for dining, areas withbenches that overlook the fountain, and the pavilion that housesa conversation area centered on the fireplace and a cookingarea with bar, gas grill, refrigerator and pizza oven. All spacesare lit at night and have surround sound. In the pavilion the TVs,lights and sound are controlled on aCrestron System. The placement ofone of the TVs is perfect for karaoke.

The pavilion’s beams were painted,scraped and waxed to contrast withthe tongue and groove ceiling.Outdoor furniture adds to the comfortof the space. Aluminum frames of thewhite-cushioned furniture have a faux-wood finish to achieve the richness ofwood without the maintenance.

Blue Bahia granite was selected forthe pavilion countertop to coordinate the blue-glass mosaic tile.Texas white limestone faces the fireplace and bar front. The cabinet frames in the pavilion are all faced with tumbled traver-tine highlighted by accents of Rossa Uerona marble. A “rug”inset of tile is seen in the conversation area. The field is traver-tine while the border combines tumbled Rossa Uerona andtravertine mosaics. Custom cuts from the blue Bahia granite areseen in the corners of the stone “rug”.

For additional seating, benches were designed to flank thefire-place. The pool was designed with water features, plantersand colored lights.

In the one gathering area, a round table is flanked on twosides by custom iron benches. The design for the benches wasinspired by an antique chair.

Frequently,an interior designer becomes ateam member with the client’sarchitect, contractor, lighting spe-cialist and landscape architect.

ASID was formed in 1931 and hasmore than 30,000 members. Itsmission statement is to encourageexcellence in the practice of interi-or design, helps its members pro-fessionally serve the public,demonstrate the value of the pro-fession and work for a favorableinterior design environment.

ASID members have education inthe field of interior design orarchitecture or have at least sixyears of full-time work experienceto qualify for membership. Testingfor professional membership hasbeen in effect since 1972.
