Background Information • Onitsuka Co., the earlier name of ASICS, was

founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka, a Japanese man who noticed a need for children’s athletic shoes during the years following World War II.

• Onitsuka began by making basketball shoes in his living room.

• Onitsuka was an advocate of "bringing up sound youth through sports.”

• He changed the company name to ASICS in 1977.

• The name “ASICS” is the acronym of the Latin phrase “Anima sana in corpore sano” which translates to “a sound mind in a sound body.”

• ASICS headquarters are located in Kobe, Japan.
