ldquoInfected mice rarely pose a threat to people if they remain in the wild said Jack Miller director of the County Department of Environmen-tal Health But hantavirus can be a danger if infected rodents get in-doors and people come into contact with their droppings People should never sweep up or vacuum rodent droppings or nesting materials when they find them but use bleach solu-tions and sponges or mops to care-fully clean up insteadrdquo

Wild rodents primarily deer mice carry hantavirus People contract the disease by inhaling dust particles containing the virus from rodent droppings and nesting materials When the virus becomes airborne and is inhaled it can cause hanta-virus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) Symptoms which can develop between one to five weeks after ex-posure are similar to the flu but can lead to severe breathing difficulties and even death

Hundreds of environmentalists defending the rights of the people to their ancestral homelands forests and agricultural lands that are being stolen by the rich and the powerful have been killed according to Global Witness a non-government agency In the Philippines as many as fifty Filipino environmental defenders have been killed in recent years al-legedly by the money moguls behind the logging mining and power plant industries

The UN environmental summit in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil has been declared a failure fizzling out like a damp squib with an insignificant document that failed to reach a clear binding agreement to curb global warming and end fossil fuel for energy production It has achieved practically nothing to curb CO2 gas-ses and other harmful human activity that is causing global warming

It was supposed to get national leaders to agree to a sustainable green energy agenda for the future The super rich industrialists and multinational oil and fossil fuel corporations have played a sinister role behind the scenes to stymie any progress towards a cleaner safer and happier world Most come from a financial culture where Greed is Good and the only green they want to see is on a thousand dollar bill

In the Philippines the voices of the many people demanding an end to the construction of coal powered plants are being ignored and even protesters are receiving threats In Subic Bay the entire bay and its towns are threatened by the pro-posed 600 MW coal plant project of RP Energy a consortium with powerful political connections in the cabinet of President Aquino I pray that his energy policy will favor

renewable energy and not coal and fossil fuel His great legacy of anti-corruption might be sullied by these influential industrialists He must serve the best interests of the people not the profit-making plans of the plutocracy

Industrialists and financing cor-porations lobby heavily to influence governments to continue the fossil fuel fiasco like power plants that poison the people in many countries In the Philippines the Secretary of Energy is pushing President Aquino into the furnace of coal fired power plants like fury The honorable secretary has denied he is influenced in anyway by his past position in the private power generation sector

I pray for him to continue being good and faithful to the people and resist the pressures and temptations to give into the ploys of former associates employers in the power generation industry to whom he may have an debt of honor (utang na Loob) His greater debt of honor is to the President and the people who elected him and who want a clean healthy environment

The Secretary of Energy is report-ed to want eleven coal fired power plants all over the country Lower cost renewable sustainable electric-ity can be generated from volcanic heat through Geothermal plants and get lithium as a side product to make powerful batteries that can run clean electric cars However mysteriously heavy import taxes are imposed on geothermal equipment Almost none on mining and coal burning equip-ment

The Lopez group of companies First Gen Corporation is offering to construct two 300 megawatt hydro-plants on the Angat and Norzagaray rivers respectively Other companies offer clean renewable and solar and wind power to make electricity

The Philippines should end the black and dirty coal policy The pro-posed Subic Bay coal plant is mired in allegedly corrupt deals with the former government They will only pay one million pesos a year in rent These plants that are belching daily poison gasses and ash into the air we breath are killing people There is no long term solution to dispose of the millions of tons of deadly semi-toxic ash and the deadly mercury and ura-nium pollutants will remain forever The Lord of the Cosmos has given us a beautiful planet we are morally bound to protect and cherish it and all living creatures END

church is not a building It is an as-sembly of people

When Jesus said ldquoI will build my church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against itrdquo Jesus was saying that the Church ndash His chosen people ndash would not die out It would be alive a warm and caring body of believers striving to serve God do His work and support each other

Before Christ came to earth God called only a few people out of their societies to serve Him and further His work Many of them are mentioned in Hebrews 11 a chapter in the Bible we could call the ldquoFaith Hall of Famerdquo

Even as Jesus called and worked through individual leaders and prophets to do spiritual work God established a physical nation to help fulfi ll His plan This nation the descendants of Abraham through his grandson Jacob (renamed Israel by God) was also known as Godrsquos church

God had a plan for Abraham In His mission to extend His love to all humanity God chose a man who was faithful and obedient to serve as a physical and spiritual role model Abraham set an example of obedi-ence in leaving his home country at Godrsquos command not even know-ing his destination He believed God would fulfi ll His promises in spite of the seeming impossibilities involved

Those who were called and chosen for a relationship with God in the past present and future are Abra-hamrsquo spiritual descendants but God also worked through Abrahamrsquos physical descendants One of the re-sponsibilities God gave to the physi-cal nation of Israel was to represent Him to show by example that Godrsquos way works

However we read in the Bible that not only did Israel fail to set a good example for its neighboring nations but the Israelites also broke their agreement with God and even caused Godrsquos name to be blas-phemed They didnrsquot have the heart needed to fully accomplish Godrsquos will and they resisted the Holy Spirit as does all mankind without the special calling of God

But God has a plan to make a new heart available to us all and to write His laws in our mind As a result of Christrsquos sacrifi ce Godrsquos Spirit is

The Church that Christ Builtnow available to individuals of any nation or race who genuinely repent and accept Jesus Christ as their Sav-ior and Lord Godrsquos ultimate pur-pose is salvation for all people both Israelite and gentile (non-Israelite)

And here enters the next step in Godrsquos plan ndash the founding of the Church

With the coming of the promised Messiah ndash Jesus Christ of Nazareth ndash the stage was set for a new phase in Godrsquos plan of salvation This phase involves God working through a group of people ndash the Church ndash who are spiritually transformed by the Holy Spirit God chose them not only to receive salvation but to carry out Godrsquos work for the ulti-mate benefi t of all humanity

By calling and training His dis-ciples Jesus prepared them to be His apostles (messengers) and a major part of the foundation of the Church The writings of the apostles continue to teach and support the Church as do the writings of the prophets in the Old Testament who are also part of the Churchrsquos foundation

Miraculous signs marked the beginning of the New Testament Church and Godrsquos giving of the Holy Spirit God wanted to draw at-tention to this event to call a sizable initial base from which the Church would expand into the world

ldquoSo then those who are in the fl esh cannot please God But you are not in the fl esh but in the Spirit if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ he is not His (Romans 88-9)

Without Godrsquos Spirit we are not Christrsquos Yet the Church is described as belonging to Christ ndash it is His Body and Bride ndash a spiritually trans-formed people The Spirit makes that change possible

God called many to repentance and the disciples baptized many The Church grew rapidly in the be-ginning with excitement and fervor evident in the Churchrsquos early history The book of Acts reports on later times of persecution and scattering as well as the growth of individual congregations throughout the Roman Empire as the apostles spread the gospel

Jesus predicted His fl ock would remain small and beleaguered down through history False prophets would even arise within the Church

There is no vaccine or specifi c treatment for hantavirus and the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report the disease has killed 36 percent of all the people known to have contracted it

The best way to prevent the dis-ease is to keep mice out of houses garages and sheds

How to Avoid Exposure

Eliminate rodent infestations im-mediately

Avoid rodent-infested areas and do not stir up dust or materials that may be contaminated with rodent drop-pings and urine

Clean up rodent droppings and urine using the wet cleaning method described below

Use ldquowet-cleaningrdquo methods to prevent inhaling the virus

DO NOT SWEEP OR VACUUM INFESTED AREAS

Ventilate affected area by opening doors and windows for at least 30 minutes

Use rubber gloves Spray a 10 per-cent bleach solution (2 tablespoons bleach to 1 cup of water) onto dead rodents rodent droppings nests contaminated traps and surround-ing areas and let the disinfectant stand for at least 15 minutes before cleaning

Clean with a sponge or a mop Place disinfected rodents and debris into two plastic bags seal them and discard in the trash

Wash gloves in a bleach solution then soap and water and dispose of them using the same double-bag method

Thoroughly wash your bare hands with soap and water

I remember reading a pamphlet of Opus Dei a religious group about work It advised that whatever your job is no matter how insignifi cant or menial it may be you must value it You must sanctify your work by doing a perfect job then offering it to God For instance if you are a janitor assigned to clean a toilet you must make it spic and span Clean it so well that you would not mind sleeping in it Then offer your perfect job to God For God is perfection He will be pleased and you will get fulfi llment and pride in your work no matter how lowly it may appear

Once you have a job save money to support yourself to college Go to a technical school fi rst During our time we have vocational courses here at Arellano Students learned to repair cars radios and televisions and learn bookkeeping Learn a skill like automotive cooking or computer work This will help you get a better job with better pay until you save enough to go to college at night while working during the day Or you can work and save money so that you can go into business Remember Lydiarsquos Lechon Jonirsquos Bakeshop They started small Just a one-table food stand Now they are big corporations You can do the same There are count-less examples If they can do it you can do it too

Once you have a steady career you can work hard and play hard

Some girls are determined to get married after high school hoping their husbands would support them They dream of staying home taking care of the house and the kids and living happily ever after Do you think that is possible Look around Almost all the girls who did so are as poor as rats desperate to survive as any uneducated jobless girl can be Why Because it is beyond logic It is not realistically possible It is a dream It is a fantasy To marry early and live happily ever after is a fairy tale Hindi mo makakain ang pag-ibig You cannot eat love our parents use to say Ang pag-aasawa ay hindi parang mainit na kanin na isusubo at iluluwa pag napaso ldquoMarriage is not a hot rice that is put in the mouth only to be spat out if one gets burnedrdquo so said an old Filipino saying Okay there might be one or two lucky enough to marry well and be sup-ported by their husbands But are they happy Being dependent on some-body else Many women who married irresponsible husbands or those with little education end up sacrifi cing for

their children They end up as bread-winners with no time for themselves But why leave your future to chance Why not take control of your life yourself and carve your own bright future Why not Believe you me there is nothing better than support-ing yourself instead of depending on other people

Of course at this period of your puberty you may fall in love Falling in love at a time when you clearly cannot afford to settle down and raise a family can be confl icting This is one trial every young man and woman had to pass through Like a rite of passage One must resist temp-tations curb onersquos passion control onersquos hormones and keep onersquos eyes on the prize - of fi nishing college and launching a career During our time we had classmates who eloped in their teens Some lived poor others got separated Donrsquot miss out on be-ing a bachelor or bachelorette Enjoy the bliss of singlehood You will be shortchanging yourself denying yourself of much greater happiness if you succumb to your feelings prematurely Those feelings will pass will fade away until you realize that being heartbroken at this point in your life is the best thing that could happen to you Better to focus on your career for now

We accompanied our youngest daughter on a campus tour of a uni-versity in Washington DC The tour guide aside from explaining all the advantages of going to that school told the prospective students ldquoIf you have a boyfriend or girlfriend you are leaving behind in high school or in your hometown I am telling you now to forget them No matter how much or how passionately you love them now For after a semester in this school you will not even think that they ever existedrdquo

Crushes come and go You will experience many of them True love will come your way without you even looking for it God will introduce you to the love of your life your lifetime mate the mother or father of our chil-dren without even you looking for him or her Just focus on your studies have fun going out with your friends boys andor girls and enjoy your youth Donrsquot shortchange yourself by

being happy at fi rst by marrying early only to feel sorry the rest of your life

One way of earning a scholarship to college is by joining the school band which I hear we have This is another avenue you should consider explor-ing

Of course there are those among you lucky to have parents to support you through college Value that great opportunity Donrsquot take it for granted Having a parental support however is not a guarantee for success It de-pends on the attitude of an individual

When I was in college a cousin of mine was brought to our house from the province by his mother She requested we let her son stay in our house so that he could go to college They could not afford a dorm for him to stay My mom agreed out of the goodness of heart That cousin of mine Ely stayed with me in my room I would sleep in my bed while he slept on the fl oor Eventually he moved to my fatherrsquos printing busi-ness in Quiapo for it was walking distance to his school He wanted to become an engineer and he had the intellectual IQ to tackle and succeed in the course A year later his younger brother Mario joined him Mario took up commerce at the Polytechnic University in Manila The brothers lived in the mezzanine fl oor of the printing press rent free Later Ely had a girlfriend They went out on dates despite the limited allowance his farmer father was sending him His girlfriend got pregnant and Ely was forced to quit school and go back to their barrio Mario soon graduated and was recommended for a job at the Central Bank of the Philippines by one of his professors During one of our family gatherings in the province Mario came driving his brand new car He made it big and transformed himself from being a naiumlve barrio boy into a successful bank executive His elder brother Ely the would-be engineer was there too No he did not come in a brand new car He came driving a tricycle which he used in plying his trade as a tricycle driver Given an opportunity you must grab it by the horns Donrsquot let it go until you cross the fi nish line

I responded with the following ldquoDanny thanks for your comments and great COMPLIMENT I have been compared to some famous men before but Dr Jose Rizal Coming from you I am taking it as a real compliment Though this reminds me of San Beda Prof Regalado (who obtained the high-est grade in Bar exams history) when he told us ldquoA praise undeserved is a slan-der in disguiserdquo Being abroad and still concerned about the Philippines there is really a Rizal in all of us It is not unlike the Propaganda Movement in Madrid Spain crying for reforms during his and Lopez Jaenarsquos time So thank you again for the complimentrdquoDuring the darkest hours of Martial Law when the Philippines was gov-erned by a dictator named Ferdinand Marcos there were also efforts abroad by both Filipino-Americans and exiled Filipinos to expose the atrocities and abuses of the dictatorial regime Like the La Solidaridad during the time of Rizal there were also publications ar-ticles and books written to infl uence and advocate changes in US policies that favored or supported dictatorial regimes The targets for these advocacies and lobbying efforts were the US Congress the White House and the US State Department

One active organization leading the propaganda efforts was the Movement for a Free Philippines (MFP) led by Raul S Manglapus and later joined by Ninoy Aquino who was imprisoned by Marcos for several years We all know what happened to Aquino at the airport in Manila while under the ldquocarerdquo of Marcos soldiers Like Rizal he also died for the Philippine cause

What also impressed me during those years was the involvement of real Filipino doctors like Rizal They cam-paigned funded and led without fear until the US administration reversed its policies and supported the Fili-pino peoplersquos desire to recapture their freedom and dignity through the People Power Revolution

I have traveled to several places in Asia South America Europe and North America as a student business executive and lawyer

For sometime now my wife and I have been receiving invitations to join my sister and her husband on a cruise that is usually coupled with land tours

We never got around to accepting fi rst because the cruises were too long (two weeks or more) and second the cities involved in the land tours were places we had already visited

But last month we accepted the invita-tion because the cruise was only 7 days with an additional 3 nights in Madrid Spain

I have never been to Madrid I have always wanted to see envision and trace the movements of Jose Rizal and the other members of the Propaganda Movement during a very important period in our history

I was always interested in drawing parallelisms between and among the propagandists in the 19th Century led by the likes of Jose Rizal Lopez Jaena del Pilar and other members of the Propa-ganda Movement who operated in Ma-drid those in the 20th Century such as the members of Anti-Marcos groups led by Raul Manglapus and Ninoy Aquino who operated in Washington DC and todayrsquos bloggers columnists Twitters Facebook status updaters commentators and other opinion-makers of both the main media and social networks in this 21st Century

When I wrote an article entitled ldquoOld 4Gs to New 4Gs Gaining Groundrdquo It elicited a reaction from Danny Be-navente a resident of Southern Califor-nia but born and raised in my hometown of Rosales Pangasinan Philippines

He said ldquoBrilliant Just plain bril-liant This one can resonate to as far and to the highest public offi ce in the PIrdquo

Four Keys of Life

Irsquom like most people throughout the world someone whose life has been impacted in one way or another by breast cancer In my case mem-bers of my family have dealt with it plus my sister passed away from it a few years ago There are numerous great organizations helping people and ldquoSusan G Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement boasting the worldrsquos largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activ-

ists The organization has included ldquoThe Four Keys of Liferdquo to their education literature to encourage and promote breast self-awareness

The four keys1 Talk to your family There is

still hesitancy in many families to talk about personal health issues especially where ldquofemale cancersrdquo such as breast endometrial and ovarian cancer are concerned But studies have connected shared genetic components between breast cancer and other cancers that may be useful in understanding your risk

of contracting the disease Providing your doctor with your family health history may lead to a better under-standing of your personal risk

2 Get screened Your doctor will determine what screening tests are right for you For women of ldquoaverage riskrdquo clinical breast exams should begin at age 20 and be repeated every three years Annual mammograms should begin at age 40 For higher risk women addi-tional screenings such as an MRI may be recommended by your health care provider

3 Know what is normal for you Any visible or palpable changes to your breasts should be reported to your doctor These changes include a lump hard knot or thickening swelling warmth redness or darken-ing a change in the size or shape of the breast dimpling or puckering of the skin itchy scaly sore or rash on the nipple pulling in of the nipple or other part of the breast nipple discharge that starts suddenly new pain in one spot that does not go away How to perform a Breast Self-Examination (BSE) can be found at wwwkomenorgbse

4 Make healthy lifestyle choices Studies and scientifi c literature purport that maintaining a healthy weight adding exercise to your rou-tine and limiting alcohol intake may all reduce the risk of breast cancer

While there is a shortage for nurses in the United States there is still no indication when USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) will resume issuing immigrant visas to fi ll the void There are many skilled and experienced foreign nurses in the United States who are looking for jobs in vari-ous hospitals and healthcare facilities Hospitals and health care facilities want to utilize their skills and services but there arenrsquot immigrant visas available because of the retrogression Irsquove talked to Filipino registered nurses who have been waiting for the immigrant visa for a long time and are willing to take nonimmigrant visas

THE H-1B NONIMMIGRANT VISAThe H-1B program allows employers

to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise in a specialized fi eld and a bachelorrsquos degree or its equivalent Typical H-1B occupations include architects engineers computer programmers accountants doctors and college professors Certain specialty occupations in the nursing industry may qualify for H-1B nonimmigrant status Specifi cally a narrow group of nurses holding a baccalaureate or higher degree (or equivalency) in nursing that includes advanced practice nurses (such as Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) Nurse Practitioners (NP) Certifi ed Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) and Certifi ed Nurse-Midwives (CNM)) nurse managers and nursing adminis-trators may qualify for H-1B status According to USCIS data the issuance of H-1B visas for specialty occupation nurses varies greatly from year to year In recent history the greatest number of H-1B nurse visas issued in any given fi scal year was only 136 The H-1B visa for specialty occupation nurses is avail-able to qualifi ed nurses from all foreign countries However the limited scope of eligible specialty occupations greatly narrows the potential use of the H-1B to fi ll US nursing job vacancies For instance many RNs may not qualify for an H-1B because employers and state licensing boards do not usually require a BSN to perform services as a registered nurse On June 11 2012 the H-1B cap has been reached and USCIS stopped accepting applications for H-1B The next H-1B season will be open on April 1 2013

THE H-1C NONIMMIGRANT VISAThe H-1C nonimmigrant classifi ca-

tion enables foreign nurses to perform services as a registered nurse in a US health professional shortage area as determined by the US Department of Labor To qualify for an H-1C visa both the employer and employee must meet certain eligibility criteria The US employer must 1) be a ldquosubsection (d)rdquo hospital under the Social Security Act 2) be located in a ldquoHealth Profes-sional Shortage Areardquo 3) have at least 190 acute care beds 4) have a Medicare population of no less than 35 5) have a Medicaid population of less than 28 and 5) be certifi ed by the Department of Labor

Since the H1-C nonimmigrant visa program sunset on December 20 2009 visas for hundreds of nurses have expired or will expire soon leaving H-1C authorized healthcare employers struggling to provide much-needed pro-fessional nursing care with a dwindling nursing staff HR 1933 is currently pending before the US Senate Judiciary

Committee which would reauthorize the H-1C nonimmigrant visa program Ac-cording to recent information provided by this committee HR 1933 remains on its agenda but is not yet scheduled for a Senate vote As drafted the bill will reauthorize the availability of 300 H-1C visas for an initial validity period of three years with the opportunity to renew H-1C status for an additional three years There is however no guar-antee that HR 1933 will be approved and become a law

THE H-3 TRAINEE VISAThe H-3 visa is a rarely used option

available to temporary workers includ-ing nurses The primary purpose of this visa is to enable the foreign nurse to receive training and not to provide productive employment unless such employment is incidental and necessary to the training It is better than the F-1 or student visa because they get paid during the training

The H-3 trainee has been defi ned by the Code of Federal Regulations as ldquoa nonimmigrant who seeks to enter the United States at the invitation of an individual or organization for the purposes of receiving training in any fi eld of endeavor such as agriculture commerce communications fi nance government transportation as well as training in a purely industrial establish-mentrdquo1 Physicians are not eligible to apply under this category but nurses are For nurses the basic requirements are 1) the proposed training is unavailable in the home country 2) the training is designed to benefi t the applicant in pur-suing her career in the home country 3) the nurse has passed the licensure exam in the country where she obtained her nursing education and 4) a statement from the petitioning employer that the applicant is fully qualifi ed to engage in the training

It is important that the employer dem-onstrate that the trainee will be returning to another country to use the skills he or she gained in the United States At the interview the applicant nurse must show that he or she will not abandon residence in a foreign country and that he or she intends to depart the United States at the end of the training program Therefore the H-3 petition may be denied if the applicant nurse has a certifi ed perma-nent labor certifi cation or has an I-140 Immigrant Petition fi led by the same employer on his or her behalf

The training program should not be longer than two (2) years There will be no extension change of status or re-admission to H or L status granted after two (2) years unless the alien resided and is physically present outside the United States for six (6) months This is not too bad compared to the J-1 trainee

who is required to stay in his or her home country for two years Spouses and children of the H-3 visa holder are eligible for H-4 dependent status

H-3 visa holders are given social security numbers and will be paid while undergoing the training However they should not be receiving as much as the regular employees because this can be perceived as displacing the US citizens

old In its over two centuries his-tory America has gone through the fi re that made it strong and stable Through countless trials during her lifetime such as the Civil War two World Wars many foreign wars like the Vietnam War and Iraqi War and civil unrests to name a few many American lives have been sacrifi ced to fi ght for what she believes in The last several years economic depressions or recessions that impoverished millions of people have become top issues in the country that have energized Amer-icans to debate intensely what is the right course for their country to pursue to better serve the well-being of her citizens and to bring back the luster and glory of America Due to national concerns on many is-sues like health care housing and global concerns on trade peace and foreign aid against the backdrop of an emerging superpower China Americarsquos national priorities and foreign policies will see a shift that will cause radical changes in this na-tion This election year will be an-other defi ning moment for America to steer Americansrsquo desire for their government to do to preserve its sta-tus as a superpower and envy of the world Despite its socio-economic problems and several foreign policy blunders that caused a signifi cant decline in Americarsquos infl uence in the world the last decade or so Ameri-cans are still a very lucky people as we are still guaranteed justice liberty and the pursuit of our own happiness that more than half of the earthrsquos population can just dream about

With that as a background I am quite grateful and fulfi lled this Independence Day 2012 as I also celebrated another birthday on July 5th (Philippine time) which is July 4th in America As 4th of July is a major holidays in the United States it has always been an opportune time for me to review my life and refl ect upon lifersquos meaning during this holiday amidst the elaborate fi re-works that surround the city where we live Having lived for over six decades now on this planet 60 of which in the American soil I can-not ask for more as I feel that I have had a ldquogood liferdquo on this earth with people I love and who love me too

The last 365 days since my last birthday were replete with surprises

events experiences and personal episodes that made me quite grateful that I am still alive and happy Like America as a person grows older (and wiser) his priorities change but his core values that serve as his compass remains constant That inexplicable feeling of joy and happiness as well as pains and suf-ferings often come to our lives as certain as the sunrise in the morning and sunset in the evening The past year has caused in me a good mix of human emotions happy sad scared regretful (for many things I have done or not done) hopeful and grateful that I am still alive and kicking today Less than a year ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and to the best of my memory I am the fi rst in my family to be stricken with that dreadful ldquoCrdquo ailment Such unexpected diagnosis from my annual medical exams has caused a very high degree of anxiety and ldquopains and sufferingrdquo within me and my family However I discovered solace and strength in my new found spiritual journey accepting that our Lord not us is in control of our lives and has admonished His people to ldquoBe not afraidrdquo Surprisingly I learned that His ldquoBe-not-afraid- advicerdquo appeared in the Bible 365 times

Thanks to my God the greatest Healer months after my surgery early this year my doctor told me that I am now a cancer survivor as my PSA level is now at negligible level He told me that he doesnrsquot want to see me more than twice a year now

Amidst that scary episode how-ever I also enjoyed many things during the past year like our month long adventure to Vienna Rome London and Paris with my one and only wife of over 30 years as our second honeymoon (many will be smiling or LOL with that bold disclosure) Another inventory of joyful accomplishments included the successful chartering of the Global Kalinga e-Rotary Club fi rst e- Club in Rotary District 3780 (and the second one in the entire Philip-pines) that I initiated and founded last year with 40 charter members who live in 6 countries that is expected to double by our fi rst An-niversary date in Oct 2012

This e-Rotary Club is like an infant that remains so tender and fragile that it needed a lot of patience and nourishment to grow But like lov-ing parents many of our committed

members are matured and patient enough to nurture this e-Rotary baby to develop it to become an Olym-pian athlete to compete in the near future Our GKeRotary Club has now members from many nationalities like Caucasians Hispanics Blacks Canadians Nigerians and Filipinos (from Luzon to Mindanao) who reside in as many 6 countries today As we grow in number with closer camaraderie among us doing many meaningful ldquoService Above Selfrdquo humanitarian proj-ects in the Philippines as well as in the city where we live we will have more FUN in this borderless e-Rotary Club than the traditional Rotary Club that meets weekly

Adhering to the ldquoSecretsrdquo in achieving a fulfi lled life by con-scious efforts (until they become unconscious efforts) to ldquobalanc-ing your Liferdquo into its essential quadrants PHYSICAL (to live) MENTAL (to learn) SOCIAL (to love) and SPIRITUAL (to leave a legacy) I have consciously put more time in one area that matters most (once you are over 60 like me) the ldquoleaving a legacyrdquo quadrant Itrsquos a fact of life that when you become a senior citizen you can no longer do many things nor eat many foods that you enjoyed when you were one and twenty when you were in high school or college so you simply adjust to your new reality Each morning that you wake up and able to walk and see the sunrise hear the chirping of birds smell the aroma of freshly brewed Healthy Coffee itrsquos always a small miracle and you thank the One Who gave you life Having accepted my own mortality that one day I will also meet my Maker I have replaced a good por-tion of ldquobusinessrdquo hours into vol-unteerism or ldquoService Above Selfrdquo hours in my church and several NGOs like the Rotary Interna-tional that truly render humanitarian works to others

Also for about fi ve years now I have been attending a weekly morn-ing Bible Study that has contributed greatly in the balancing of my life that is very hard to do in a materi-alistic society like the USA The word BIBLE has been creatively defi ned to mean ldquoB asic L essons B efore L eaving E arthrdquo and in so many ways it lsquos true All of us homo sapiens undergo that human journey like the biblical ldquoprodigal sonrdquo who must leave the family home goes away (to experience new things both good and bad) and hopefully comes back home (to his Father) as he must undergo some profound changes (for his own salvation) Life without any kind of metamorphosis the caterpillar would never become a beautiful and colorful butterfl y So does a person must undergo many phases of his transformation to enjoy his journey on this earth before he goes into that blissful state that many call Heaven or Paradise

Additionally last year I also fi nished by certifi cation classes and has been ldquocertifi edrdquo by the Diocese of Orange and the Orange County Sheriff to wear a white badge as a ldquoRestorative Justice Ministerrdquo aka ldquoPrison Detention Ministerrdquo where we visit and minister to the inmates in the Orange County Jails every week for Bible Study andor Catholic Com-munion Services every week

Meeting these ldquoinmatesrdquo (thatrsquos what they are called in County Jails in state or federal prison the incarcerated are called ldquoprisonersrdquo) and listening to them and ministering to their ldquospiritualrdquo needs on a weekly basis have an-nihilated many myths and miscon-ceptions that I used to hold ldquoagainstrdquo them Due to some educational and cultural biases I used to believe that all those in prison deserved to be there as they are ldquobadrdquo criminals but slowly I have softened that stand I now believe that although these in-mates are incarcerated they are still human beings also who still possess their human dignity as children of the same God Many martyrs and saints of the church like St John the Baptist and St Paul were also in prison The prison system is a part of the human society since biblical times and its worsening conditions in many areas are a sad refl ection of all of us en of the same God Many martyrs and our lives and He has admonished His people to ldquo

Punishments and Restorative

Justice are two schools of thoughts that are being administered in many prisons today The Catholic and many Christian churches advo-

cate that more must be done in the rehabilitation or in the Restorative Justice of inmates or prisoners in the Justice System to give back their human dignity even when they are incarcerated

Being a Prison Detention Minister and just listening and observing these inmates during our Catholic Communion Services that we do for them is another human experience

that can potentially convert a sinner like me into a better human being For instance I got an unexpected education from one woman inmate

when she declared ldquoI am now very happy that I was arrested for what I did I consider my arrest as my own rescue from a certain deathrdquo What a paradigm shift Now I can understand why there are many spiritual conversions that occur in prison because God does not leave a person wherever he is because He is everywhere

To any practicing Catholic (or any religion for that matter)

out there I highly recommend that he or she tries to see if becoming a Prison Detention or Restorative Jus-tice Minister is right for him or her It is a wonderful experience There is a great need for more dedicated and willing volunteers to minister to the spiritual needs of this growing prison population in America today

The foregoing column is a very sobering personal refl ection on

this 4th of July weekend that I am boldly sharing to all readers and my friends with a ray of hope that some may also be inspired to be an-other ldquoLamp in the City on the Hillrdquo for others to see the inexplicable wonders of God as He has mysteri-ously converted Saul the Christian persecutor into St Paul to become a great and fearless evangelist of our Christian faith

The standoff between China and the Philippines in Panatag (Scarbor-ough) Shoal began in April when the Philippines accused Chinese fi sher-men of poaching in its exclusive economic zone including the shoal During the tensions both sides sent government ships to the area though both have since withdrawn vessels

Vietnam has protested a recent an-nouncement by the China National Offshore Oil Corp opening nine oil and gas lots for international bidders in areas overlapping with existing Vietnamese exploration blocks Viet-nam says the lots lie entirely within its 200-nautical mile exclusive economic zone and continental shelf

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokes-person Liu Weimin said in a press conference in Beijing Monday that the code of conduct is not for the resolution of disputes in the West Philippine Sea

Knowing my daughter and if I am not mistaken I predict that she will persevere and succeed She is guided by the Scriptures and books written by those who have made it She is so disci-plined that she does not even watch TV She says Jessica Sanchez and Manny Pacquaio will not help her become fi -nancially free They could entertain you but when you go back to reality you are still in whatever state you are

A couple from church introduced Am-way to me in 1987 They showed a plan telling me that I could be a millionaire in two to fi ve years if I buy from my own store ndash soaps (both laundry and body) beauty products vitamins and many more ndash and share the dream with others

I did not care I just landed in America just two weeks before I came to Amer-ica to work in pursuit of my own kind of dream Besides even if I wanted to I did not have $8000 then to register plus I did not have lsquoothersrsquo to share dreams with

Fast forward to late 2010 My only daughter and youngest of my children then 18 gets wind of Amway She asks for $16700 so she could register to be-come what Amway calls an Independent Business Owner Although reluctant I shelled out the money After all it was not for drugs or something like that Then she tells us among others to buy from her store what we would be buying from other stores anyway Why make the other stores profi t when we should be patronizing her store The prices were competitive She changed our soaps toothpastes her momrsquos make-up kit drinks vitamins etc I did not really care To me shaving cream is shaving

cream laundry soap is laundry soap My daughter is happy I am happy

What I did not really know was she was growing her market She had others join her in her dream

In late 2010 she had to attend an Amway convention in Portland Oregon with her dozen team members ndash no one was over 21 years old They were going on a long drive for eighteen hours They needed two vans but no rent-a-car would allow them to rent the vehicles Grudg-ingly I acceded to her request that I and her mom rent one each of those vans and might as well join them ndash might as well be in the convention

And so we were there In front of ten thousand participants

couple after couple testifi ed how they realized their dream sharing Amway products They were former waitresses accountants doctors construction workers Navy Seals etc On gargantuan screens they fl aunted their villas jets yachts high end cars and their pleasure trips around the world They said that through patience and hard work for two to fi ve years they sailed to becoming millionaires ndash now waking up whenever they want and being full time moms and dads

I believed them If only one of them would be lying in front of ten thousand people the institution Amway would crumble down

Then I was angry There was this guy same as my age was a teacher like me He was on the stage as a millionaire and I was down there listening to him and I have nothing to show He got into Amway in the middle 90rsquos Deng It was introduced to me in 1987

I started reading their brochures and catalogs I came to the conclusion that mathematically you could really get rich doing this thing All you needed is the belief the emotional quotient strive patience and most of all your dreams

Nonetheless beyond the business be-yond the products beyond the dreams I treasure most what Amway has done to my daughter Instead of continuing to party like most of her peers she is reading the Bible upon waking up and follows this up with management and business related books She is in power business cloths instead of showing her belly buttons Most important before Amway she fi ghts with her mom Now they are the best of friends

So I tell my friends and acquaintances about Amway and its products Most of them because the company has been there for over 50 years have heard of it have been into it and have notions about it This is because Amway is the mother of networking and Amway stands for the American Way

Most of them too after I show or reshow them the product benefi ts and the principle of buying from your own store go back to Amway if they have been there before The main thing is all of them agree to the greatness of the products and appreciate the evolved and developed marketing system of the com-pany ndash for those in the know one does not have to horde products anymore to sell everything now is done on-line And if you are not computer suave one in the organization will do it for you because you at least know how to use your cell phone or you can directly call in the orders

Refl ections The Hebrew word for shepherd does not only mean a king and ruler it also connotes the notion of feeding defending caring

and providing Jeremiah denounced the shepherds of his time who cared for themselves alone and not for the fl ock that were entrusted to them From the Christian point of view Jesus Christ is the shepherd who restores hope to new Israel In turn Jesus wants his apostles to continue his shepherding mission

Reginald Fuller commented that in this Marcan passage the term ldquoapostlesrdquo was not originally a title but a function Jeremiah condemned Zedekiah and the last kings of Judah as shepherds who have misled the people These corrupt shepherds paid more attention to their own selfi sh vested interests than those of the fl ock The Marcan passage is implying that the apostles should

avoid committing the same serious mistake In Matthew 23 6-7 Jesus told his disciples ldquoThey (Scribes and Pharisees) love places of honor at banquets seats of honor in syna-gogues greetings in marketplaces and the salutation lsquoRabbirsquordquo The apostles are told not to put more emphasis on title such as ldquoapostlerdquo and less on responsibilities that come with it Instead they should put more weight on their duties and responsibilities Titles such as ldquodoctor teachers bishop reverend engineer lawyerrdquo denote functions and responsibilities But when a title gains more prominence than the re-sponsibilities that come with it title divides rather than unites people

We read in todayrsquos Gospel that Jesus invited his apostles to take a break from their tiresome activities Likewise we seek scenic vistas sun-ny beaches quiet and private places

to relax and unwind Leonardo da Vinci wrote ldquoEvery now and then go away have a little relaxation for when you come back to your work your judgment will be surer since to remain constantly at work will cause you to lose power of judgment hellip Go some distance away because then the work appears smaller and more of it can be take in at a glance and lack of harmony or proportion is more readily seenrdquo Jesus mindful of his apostlesrsquo need for a breather after a hectic mission asked them to rest a while It was a rest aimed at energizing the apostles with the divine presence that would enable them to be more effective in their mission Onersquos summer vacation can also be an occasion to recharge our spiritual battery

Spiritual courage is something completely different It is following the deepest desires of our hearts at the risk of losing fame and popular-ity It asks of us the willingness to lose our temporal lives in order to gain eternal life

Often he would also feel guilty that having such kind of thoughts about inequality with the priests could be sacrilegious and wonders if he had to go to the con-fessional for that

Such thoughts however would vanish as he immerses himself with the day of classes ndash geometry Latin physics basketball volleyball lunch more studies ping-pong ro-sary and the long litanies and night prayers

The thoughts of inequality how-ever would invade his mind again the following day right after the br-riinnggg brrriinggg brriingggg and the regimen begins

And the regimen he would be go-ing back to made the short Christ-mas holiday break really shorter Nonetheless he had dedicated himself to the vocation and glad that no one or nothing during the vaca-tion made him feel that it was really short He had again passed the test of being out of the seminary walls with still the resolve that he would be going back for Godlinessrsquos sake

Vacations are not only respites from the sanctified isolationrsquos regimen They are tests to how one would not succumb to the calls of the human flesh in the outside world Should one not be able to resist temptations it would be better for one to fall away from the calling earlier than later after one is fully vested when the faithful would be subject to disillusionment

Nonetheless tonight Carlo would indulge in a simple call of the flesh He was ready for the dinner prepared by his mother one much better than the feasts of the priests

Yesterday I received a reminder from the international headquarters of the International CES organizers that reg-istration to the conference and exhibit show just started

I wasted no time to register as a member of the Press again Like in previous years it will be held in Las Vegas Nevada The actual conference will be on January 8 ndash 12 2013 but I will be going a little earlier to attend the Pre-Conference Media events The latter starts January 6th

I am encouraging Asian Journal read-ers who are consumer technology pro-fessionals andor enthusiasts to attend and register early Registration now until August 31st is free but it will cost $100 starting September 1st and will increase to $200 on January 2 2013

The 2013 CES will feature 3000 global technology companies unveiling the latest consumer technology products and services Among the major catego-ries of these products are electronic gaming entertainmentcontent digital imagingphotography connected home technologies automotive electronics audio video TV and many more

The new President of PANASONIC Kazuhiro Tsuga will deliver the Open-ing Keynote Address He is expected to address the ldquoopportunities ahead for consumer electronicsrdquo

Tsugarsquos address will follow the State of the CE Industry keynote address by Gary Shapiro president and CEO of CEA which organizes runs and owns the celebrated conference

Samsungrsquos President Stephen Woo will also deliver a Keynote Address to open day two of the conference He will present his ldquoinsight on the role of com-ponents in enabling consumer product innovationsrdquo

Some thousands of indigenous people all over the Philippines es-pecially in Mindanao especially the Subaanen people on the Zamboanga Peninsula have struggle for years to stop mining corporations from moving in to explore and mine the mountains and hills They are victims of corrupt government offi cials and even judges who are captivated by the vested inter-est of the mining industry

Some Indigenous people are sadly being forced to turn to armed resis-tance as the mining corporations move into their lands The Subaanen people have remained steadfastly non-violent and turned to the rule of law and trust in the constitution to protect them and their rightsBut is it enough

Hundreds of thousands of hectares of ancestral land has been threatened by the illegal and corrupt acts of some offi cials of the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Allegedly some of these offi cials are not on the side of the people in Mindanao but are for the rich and powerful mining interests and the banks that fund them

They allegedly enrich themselves by giving mining permits to companies

over ancestral lands which is forbidden by law It is at this level in the provinc-es where the anti-corruption campaign of President Aquino is weakest He has deposed a former president and a chief Justice but not yet the corrupt offi cials in Mindanao While the president is dedicated and honestly trying to clean up the stinking garbage of corrup-tion he cannot seemingly oust these entrenched offi cials the henchmen and women of powerful political families

They do not have allegiance to their department cabinet secretary or the president In fact they are ones who defy the president and are the hardest to get rid off The presidents politi-cal allies could be behind the corrupt practices that is opening the way for the illegal logging and issuance of mining permits They are pushing the president to override the provincial governments bans on open pit mining He must resist this pressure

Mining companies that get a permit to explore and mine also get a logging permit for the cutting the trees in the area alloted to them for mining This is totally destructive and is a way around the presidential ban on logging which goes on unabated Just drive through Mindanao and you will pass twenty or thirty huge trucks hauling cut logs I have seen them myself

For many years the Subaanen people and their supporters have stood peace-fully for their rights courageously and bravely to stop the local dynastic families and their cronies in the Inter-national mining industry from mining

their ancestral lands The Subaanen have been non-violent and trusted the democratic rule of law to save them

Their breakthrough cam in August 2011 when the Supreme Court of the Philippines granted a Writ of Ka-likasan (A protection of nature) to the people to protect the environment of the whole of the Zamboanga Peninsu-la A Writ of Kalikasan is a powerful legal remedy under Philippine law which provides for the protection ones right to a balanced and health-ful ecology in accord with the rhythm and harmony of nature as provided for in Section 16 Article II of the Philippine Constitution It protects ones right for a healthy environment against damage of such magnitude that it threatens life health or property of inhabitants in two or more cities or provinces But the government of-fi cials are ignoring the Supreme Court order

Bishop Jiminez and three other bishops and an archbishop signed a letter to the London based sharehold-ers of the mining company RTZ-CRA trying to get the offi cials to stop the mining and logging wrote to the shareholders

In part he letter said ŠSince the company has the right to expatriate all the profi ts you the shareholders will probably earn some money However many of our people who own the lands where all the minerals are will become paupers Our rivers and seas

In travelling the countryside or while you are crossing the street driving your car taking the subway bedridden in the hospital or stuck in prison dont forget to say your Rosary every day Let the beads slip between your fi ngers they also slip between the fi n-gers of the Holy Father at the Vatican those of a grandmoth-er in Alaska a child on a hill in Rwanda a football player on a fi eld in Rio a Carthusian monk in his cell a Carmelite in her cloister or young evangelists on a mission

Ordinario created the only Navy dosimetry program that manages multiple afl oat and ashore command programs from one location and the fi rst overseas dosimetry hub for Department of Defense personnel in Japan The program monitored personnel for external radiation exposure while working in support of Operation Tomadachi

money changers that were licensed to provide fi nancial services such as remittance transactions and bill pay-ments

The Philippines are fragmented by nature The country has 7000 islands 2000 of which are inhabited Since most banks are in urban areas reaching clients on the smaller remote islands can be extremely diffi cult and costly In a country where the savings rate is abysmal many people depend on credit for everyday expenses Non-bank facilities like pawnshops which are regulated by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (or BSP the Philippines central bank) fi ll this gap

The BSP is currently considering allowing convenience stores or ldquosari-sari shopsrdquo to become banking agents as well They would be allowed to offer a variety of services including handling remittance transactions As nearly one out of 10 Filipinos lives and works abroad remittance transactions represent a huge portion of demand for fi nancial services In fact the Philip-

pines is one of the top fi ve recipients of remittances globally receiving about USD$19 billion annually

While this informal part of the banking sector certainly promotes fi nancial inclusion the BSP has made efforts to formalize the industry In 2010 it passed an amendment to certain banking regulations allowing for banks to establish microbanking offi ces (ldquoMBOsrdquo) MBOs are much smaller and cheaper to set up than bank branches They also offer a wider range of services that are important to Filipinos including microinsurance electronic money transfers social secu-rity payouts and savings products

270 rice growers go for organic

6292012 -- La Liga Policy Institute (La Liga) a national development organization announced yesterday that some 270 rice farmers from Pangasinan province had graduated from its ldquoOrganikong Palayan (OP)rdquo field-school program In an emailed statement La Liga said the farmers have vowed to apply in their own farms their newly-acquired knowl-edge and skills in organic agricul-ture ldquoThe graduation today of hundreds of new organic rice farm-ers is regarded as a new milestone in our advocacy for sustainable organic and ecological agriculturerdquo La Liga Managing Director Roland Cabigas said ldquoOrganikong Palayan program helps restore soil fertility reduce expenses for agricultural inputs and increase the incomes of farmers and the farming community In the medium term it significantly contributes in the implementation of the Department of Agriculturersquos strategy of attaining food and staple sufficiency during the administration of President Benigno Aquino 3rdrdquo Cabigas added La Liga and the Go Organic Philippines movement have been advocating for sustainable organic and ecological agriculture in the country for years now These two groups earlier pushed to have an organic agriculture legislation in the country In 2010 the Philip-pine Organic Agriculture Act (RA 100681) was signed into law The farmers then enrolled in the SLT and participated in its 14 sessions of production of organic fertilizer and actual organic rice farming in eight designated learning farms (two for each of the LGU project areas)

Wild rodents primarily deer mice carry hantavirus People contract the disease by inhaling dust particles containing the virus from rodent droppings and nesting materials When the virus becomes airborne and is inhaled it can cause hanta-virus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) Symptoms which can develop between one to five weeks after ex-posure are similar to the flu but can lead to severe breathing difficulties and even death

The UN environmental summit in Rio De Janeiro in Brazil has been declared a failure fizzling out like a damp squib with an insignificant document that failed to reach a clear binding agreement to curb global warming and end fossil fuel for energy production It has achieved practically nothing to curb CO2 gas-ses and other harmful human activity that is causing global warming

In the Philippines the voices of the many people demanding an end to the construction of coal powered plants are being ignored and even protesters are receiving threats In Subic Bay the entire bay and its towns are threatened by the pro-posed 600 MW coal plant project of RP Energy a consortium with powerful political connections in the cabinet of President Aquino I pray that his energy policy will favor

renewable energy and not coal and fossil fuel His great legacy of anti-corruption might be sullied by these influential industrialists He must serve the best interests of the people not the profit-making plans of the plutocracy

Industrialists and financing cor-porations lobby heavily to influence governments to continue the fossil fuel fiasco like power plants that poison the people in many countries In the Philippines the Secretary of Energy is pushing President Aquino into the furnace of coal fired power plants like fury The honorable secretary has denied he is influenced in anyway by his past position in the private power generation sector

I pray for him to continue being good and faithful to the people and resist the pressures and temptations to give into the ploys of former associates employers in the power generation industry to whom he may have an debt of honor (utang na Loob) His greater debt of honor is to the President and the people who elected him and who want a clean healthy environment

The Secretary of Energy is report-ed to want eleven coal fired power plants all over the country Lower cost renewable sustainable electric-ity can be generated from volcanic heat through Geothermal plants and get lithium as a side product to make powerful batteries that can run clean electric cars However mysteriously heavy import taxes are imposed on geothermal equipment Almost none on mining and coal burning equip-ment

The Lopez group of companies First Gen Corporation is offering to construct two 300 megawatt hydro-plants on the Angat and Norzagaray rivers respectively Other companies offer clean renewable and solar and wind power to make electricity

The Philippines should end the black and dirty coal policy The pro-posed Subic Bay coal plant is mired in allegedly corrupt deals with the former government They will only pay one million pesos a year in rent These plants that are belching daily poison gasses and ash into the air we breath are killing people There is no long term solution to dispose of the millions of tons of deadly semi-toxic ash and the deadly mercury and ura-nium pollutants will remain forever The Lord of the Cosmos has given us a beautiful planet we are morally bound to protect and cherish it and all living creatures END
