  • Nostalgia por la radio - one of the best Shortwave Radios vis-à-vis Activity of Cuba.

The radio receiver ICF-2001D (sold in the US as SONY ICF 2010) was a portable radio having high-sensitivity and selectivity in the LW, MW, SW and FM bands. Manufactured by Sony in Japan, the radio covered frequencies from 150 kHz to 30 MHz in AM and SSB mode. The FM band coverage was from 88 MHz to 108 MHz and the air band from 117 MHz to 136 MHz. Because of the good performance and small size at that time, this radio was coveted by intelligence agents around the world, amid the so-called Cold War. The Sony ICF-2010/ICF-2001D, considered as an “All-Time Classic”, It was perhaps one of the most iconic multi-band portable radios of its time and enjoyed one of the longest production runs of any radio, being manufactured from 1985 to 2002. An example of the use of SONY ICF-2001D in international espionage is a series of cases involving Cuban intelligence agents between 2001 and 2009. In all such cases discovered by the F.B.I., at least one of the evidence found was one ICF-2001D!

The first case was one of Ana Belén Montes (born February 28, 1957), who worked for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency as its highest ranking Cuban analyst. Ana had been collecting sensitive information for Cuba since 1985 until her arrest in 2001. Before her arrest on September 21, 2001 (Montes was done in by one of her own so-called “comrades.”), the FBI searched her apartment and found evidence of the use of One-Time Pad messages on her laptop. A functional Sony ICF-2001D short wave receiver was also present in the apartment that was used to receive messages from the Cuban number station known in the DXers world as ′′Attention", at the frequency of 7887 kHz. Similar cases as detected later were those of Florida University Professors Carlos and his second wife Elsa Alvarez (captured in 2006), Marta Rita Velazquez (former US government employee), Gerardo Hernandez (one of the “Cuban Five”, arrested in 1998) and Walter Kendall Myers and his wife Gwendolyn Steingraber Myers (arrested in 2009 after 2009 spying for almost 30 years). The ICF-2001D was used in all cases to receive coded messages from the ′′Attention′′ station, presumably with transmitters in the West Cuba. The use of the short wave for espionage purposes was dealt with in the film ′′Wasp Network′′ where one of the ′′Cuban Five′′ can be seen. The film stars Penélope Cruz, Édgar Ramírez, Gael García Bernal, Ana de Armas and Wagner Moura. It tells the true story of Cuban spies in American territory during the 1990s. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2019. - Sudipta Ghose with inputs from Jesser Aguilar via Nostalgia por la radio (FM, AM y ONDA CORTA) FB Group.

The year 2021 marks 100 years of Amateur Radio in India The history of ham radio began in India as early as 1921. The first Indian ham late Amarendra Chandra Gooptu, started his transmission in the year 1921 with a callsign 2JK. He was the lone ham at that time and so his radio transmission was a one way traffic. Those having the receiving equipment could listen to his broadcast. 2JK was followed by 2HQ, Mukul Bose (changed to VU2HP) in 1922 and VU2AG Loken Bose in 1924. So two way ham radio contacts among Indians started from 1922 onwards. However, during the 1923s 20 British hams were operating from India. India’s first short wave public broadcasting station belonged to Dr. Matcalfe VU2KH, a leading radio amateur and who was the Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University. He and his group of radio amateurs established an entertainment public broadcasting station VU6AH in the year 1935 and had listeners all over India. Amateur Radio licensing was closed and ham radio equipment were taken away by the authorities when the World War II broke in 1939. At the end of World War II, the authorities started issuing temporary amateur radio operator’s licenses from 1946. By the beginning of 1948, there were hardly fifty odd licensed hams of which a dozen or so were active. Source: Brief History of Amateur Radio in Calcutta-by Avinash Missra, VU2EM: Hamfest India ‘96 Souvenir ~ Jose Jacob – VU2JOS A new 10 kW FM station will be commissioned by All India Radio on 31st December 2020 at Bathnaha in Araria District of Bihar. Its frequency is 100.1 MHz. It will strengthen the coverage of AIR in the Indo Nepal border area. ~ Sudipta Ghose – VU2UT Asian DX Review 14 January 2021

  • The Crystal Radio set. My first encounter with radio. By Sudipta Ghose – VU2UT

How I became acquainted with the magic of radio? I actually have a bittersweet memory about my first encounter with the world of radio. Allow me to tell you that.

During the winter vacation of 1965, I had the occasion to visit my uncle who used to stay in a semi-rural area. By profession he was a top notch Electrical Engineer who was with the General Electric Company (GEC) that had its Headquarters in Calcutta (as Kolkata was known at that time). At the launch table that day, with bated breath, he divulged to me that he will introduce me to some ethereal magic during the afternoon.

After finishing the victuals served, I was duly summoned to help him in erecting two bamboo poles of about 30 feet height on the roof of the single storied building that he used to stay in. A length of horizontal wire was tied between the two bamboo poles and from one end of that wire a length of wire was dropped down which entered the building through a window. The lower end of this vertical wire was then attached to a contraption on a low wooden table. Another wire came out of the setup and went out of the building through the window sill to the field outside and vanished into the mud. The uncle told me to put a broken telephone handset that was connected to the setup to my ear while he twiddled a knob fixed onto the setup. Lo and behold music and voices poured out of the telephone handset. The talks and music were a little jumbled up, but were intelligible.

I was actually listening to the radio stations through the most simple radio receiver also called a crystal set that was popular in the early days of radio. A crystal radio receiver used only the power of the received radio signal to produce sound, needing no external power. It derived its name from the most important component used, a crystal detector which was used to be fabricated from a piece of crystalline mineral known as “galena”. This crystal was subsequently replaced by a Germanium diode. Other components as used in such crystal radio, apart from the Germanium diode, are a coil of thin wire, a variable capacitor and earphones. The crystal radio sets produce feeble sound and has to be listened to with sensitive earphones, and can only receive stations situated close by.

Now, coming to the reality. Our euphoria of listening to the radio every afternoon came to a rude halt after two days when one Inspector from the Post Office visited the household. He espied the antenna on the roof and demanded to see the license for the radio attached to the antenna. At that time every radio has to have a license. On seeing the Crystal Set he was furious and threatened my uncle with all sort of punishment in loud tone due to contravention of the Telegraph Act. However, he became magnanimous and let my uncle off with a stiff fine of Rs. 100/- as that was the first offence and a flimsy radio was involved in the act.

  • C V L N SASTRY – Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. I thank you sincerely for reminding us about Sri Jonathan and his Thursday evening programs on RN. I was a very faithful listener. I also listened to Sri Tom Meyer and his Sunday program Smiles Across the Miles, using my inexpensive (costly, in those days, cost me Rs.350, when my monthly salary was Rs.200 ) 5 Valve, 3 Band, AC DC Philips India Radio. I now live in Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, sir. I fondly cherish the small gramophone record they sent.

Please find attached some Pirate Logs and two QSL's recently received, which are Radio Enterprise and Panda Radio, who respond quickly to listener's reception reports. Dario Gabrielli My name is Dario and I live in Italy. I began to receive your publication with news very interesting about DX. As I publish every two months a DX bulletin and in this issue I write an article about European DX Club meeting and I'll want some pictures about the Meet connection, may you send the picture of radio aficionados that take part? Hoping in your news and help, I wish my best from north of Italy. Dario
