Beatitude of the Month
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth Lead us in the way of humility > palm flat on heart and bow slightly
Gloria v
1. Glory be to God in heaven, peace to those who love him well;
on the earth let all his people speak his grace, his wonders tell:
Lord, we praise you for your glory, mighty Father, heaven’s king;
hear our joyful adoration and accept the thanks we bring.
2. Only Son of God the Father, Lamb who takes our sin away,
now with him in triumph seated – for your mercy, Lord, we pray:
Jesus Christ, most high and holy, Saviour, you are God alone
in the glory of the Father with the Spirit: Three-in-One!
Words: Michael Perry (b 1942) Music: Abbot’s Leigh, Cyril Taylor (1907-1991) © Michael Perry
Collect
Almighty Father, whose Son was revealed in majesty
before he suffered death upon the cross: give us grace to perceive his glory, that we may be strengthened to suffer with him
and be changed into his likeness, from glory to glory; who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Additional Collect
Holy God, you know the disorder of our sinful lives:
set straight our crooked hearts, and bend our wills to love your goodness
and your glory in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

First Reading – Exodus 24.12-18
The LORD said to Moses, ‘Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have
written for their instruction.’ So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, ‘Wait here for us, until
we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.’ Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the
mountain. The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. Now the
appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up
on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.
Second Reading – 2 Peter 1.16-21*
We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty.
For he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, ‘This is my Son, my Beloved, with
whom I am well pleased.’ We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark
place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own
interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
Gospel – Matthew 17.1-9
Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high
mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them
Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses,
and one for Elijah.’ While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved;
with him I am well pleased; listen to him!’ When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying,
‘Get up and do not be afraid.’ And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them,
‘Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.’

Post Communion Prayer
Holy God, we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ:
may we who are partakers at his table reflect his life in word and deed,
that all the world may know his power to change and save. This we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THURSDAY 27 FEBRUARY
7.30pm – RUTLAND THEOLOGICAL
SOCIETY
Oakham Methodist Church
How religious figures achieve iconic status. Speaker: Rev'd Canon
Dr Alan Race. Alan is a priest-theologian and has been active in the interfaith
7
movement for many years. He has
combined pastoral office with theological teaching activities
throughout most of his career and is now retired. He is the author of the
classic study ‘Christians and Religious Pluralism’ (1983) which has shaped
theology of religions debates for many years. His latest publication is ‘Pope Francis and Interreligious Dialogue’
(2018), jointly edited with Harold Kasimow who is a Jewish scholar and
holocaust survivor. He is currently both Chair of the World Congress of Faiths
and of the Modern Church liberal theology movement. This talk begins by
considering how heroes and celebrities achieve a status that extends beyond
their own personalities. The anthropological clue that this provides is
then applied to religious figures from various traditions. Attributing iconic
status is not necessarily immediate but develops over time and is captured in
devotional and doctrinal affirmations. A key role is played by historic circumstances as well as the immediate
impact of the spiritual and moral insight they displayed. Exaggerations over their
status is also a clue in the narrative of their developing status..

Annual Spring Clean
and Inventory.
Would hirers please be aware that
shortly the Hall committee will be carrying out an annual spring clean and
stock taking. There are quite number of items of equipment, or even of food or drink, that have accumulated over
recent months. Some of these have been stored for a long time in one of
the sheds adjacent to the Hall. If the ownership these cannot be identified,
the items will be disposed of to charity shops or in other ways. Unless in
exceptional circumstance, and with the agreement of the Committee anything
not specifically the property of the Church Hall, should never be stored
there. Peter Kinal (Chairman).
Do You Like Cake?
Oakham Church Hall Committee is
looking for one or two new recruits to join the committee. Each meeting starts
with cake & a cup of tea. We hold meetings about four or five times a
year on a Friday afternoon or early evening, lasting about an hour, including cake eating time. We already have a
Chairman, Treasurer & Secretary, but our committee members have
dwindled. If you are interested, please speak to Peter Kinal or Patrick Wilson.
Thank You Brian
Brian Rose has recently retired from
his Sacristy duties due to advancing years. He has been a faithful and lifelong
member of All Saints. He has performed many tasks within the
church over the years. We would like to wish him well in his retirement and
give him our grateful thanks.
Lent Book
This year’s Lent Book To Seek and to
Save: Daily Reflections on the Road to the Cross is now available to buy in our
churches. Journey with Jesus on the road to Jerusalem with these
reflections for Lent by Sinclair Ferguson. As you walk through the second half of Luke's Gospel, you'll
meet the people Jesus encountered on the way to the cross, and prepare your
heart to appreciate his death and resurrection afresh.
Oakham Mission Giving
In line with the policy of previous years, All Saints Oakham PCC will give away
10% of its 2019 income to mission agencies. This figure (rounded up to
£9000) represents the generosity of the people of our church and enables
us to fulfil the Lord’s call to support those in need locally, nationally and
further afield. After careful thought and discussion the Vicar, Churchwardens
and PCC have agreed to support the following agencies in 2020:
International: £4000 (*United Society (formerly USPG) - £1500; *Church Mission Society - £2000; Open
11
Doors (North Korea Appeal) - £500);
National: £2500 (*British Red Cross - £1000; *Scripture Union - £1000;
Langley House Trust - £500); Local: £2500 (*Church Together in Oakham
(and associated projects) - £1000; *Rutland Reminders - £500; *Mothers’
Union Peterborough - £500; College of St. Barnabas (specific appeal) - £500). As well as supporting these agencies
financially we have the opportunity to deepen our relationship with them by:
regularly praying for them in our services; distributing up to date
information amongst the congregation; inviting representatives and speakers;
having a monthly focus on each partner/charity,; forging personal
relationships with particular projects and people. It is our intention to make
the seven agencies marked * long term partners. In each of the three
categories we will support an additional agency which will change each year.
This will allow us to maintain links with agencies that we have supported in the past, and introduce new ones in the
future. We will continue to consult the congregation about this. We also want
to encourage groups and individuals within the church to continue to
support other agencies. This will include Christian Aid in May and
Children’s Society in December. We also welcome fund-raising initiatives for
other agencies, and will support emergency appeals. By engaging with
the wider mission of God’s church we gain a deeper appreciation of the word
and love of God in action. Stephen.
Bereavement Support
The Bereavement Support Drop-In
Group is held on the last Friday of the month between 10.30am and noon in
the Church Hall. However during Lent, the Church Hall also hosts our now
traditional soup-and-bread lunches on Fridays. We have therefore decided that
on Friday 27 March the Drop-In Group will be half an hour earlier – from 10am
to 11.30am. This will allow us to meet with as little disruption to Lent Lunches
as possible. And of course it will provide the opportunity for those coming to the Drop-In Group to stay and enjoy a Lent
Lunch after our meeting.
New Curate
I'm delighted to announce that we will be
welcoming a new curate in 2020. Simon Aley of Manton, Rutland, is currently
completing his ordination training and will be ordained at Peterborough Cathedral
on Sunday 28 June 2020 at 4pm. Please pray for Simon and his wife Carys as they
prepare for this new chapter in their lives. Charlotte and Iain will remain in
post until at least Easter 2020. This is the new sign-off date for curates in
Peterborough Diocese. After that they are free to respond to a call to ministry
elsewhere. However they will retain the Bishop's license to serve in the Oakham
Team until the end of the year should that be necessary. They will remain involved in their current areas of specific
ministry as well as more generally throughout the Team until they move to
a new appointment. Please pray for them as they discern the next steps that God
has for them. Stephen.
