Hey there fellow San Diegans! After a wonderful week in Chicago for the ASHRAE Convention and AHR Expo,I’m quite happy to be back in our little slice of heaven. And apparently the trend is catching on back at ASHRAEHeadquarters as we have two very exciting events coming up here in our beautiful city! As many of you areaware, the High Performance Building Conference is quickly approaching, taking place March 12-13th inMission Valley. We are fortunate to have many local individuals involved in the upcoming conference and it’santicipated to have a great turnout. Full details of the conference are on page 16.

Likewise, it was just announced in Chicago that the next YEA Leadership Weekend (YLW) will be taking placehere in San Diego on the weekend of March 30th thru April 1st! As your YEA (Young Engineers in ASHRAE)Regional Coordinator and San Diego Chapter board member I am extremely excited to see our city host such adynamic event and expose our young members to all that ASHRAE has to offer. YEA Leadership Weekend is anopportunity for future leaders of ASHRAE to learn more about Society, develop soft skills and network withother young professionals. The event includes segments on understanding your own personality as well asother personality types, professional development, communication techniques and ASHRAE leadershipopportunities. Registration is slotted to open Monday, January 30th (although it may be postponed a week)and there is a limited number of spots available (typically only 30 for each YLW) so be sure to submit yourregistration as soon as possible. Each year the ASHRAE San Diego chapter participates in the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair.Chapter members volunteer to act as professional society judges to evaluate student exhibits within theengineering fields of interest to us. Students of the top three exhibits are awarded with a $200 savings bond. Inaddition, student’s teachers are awarded $400.00 to help prepare their class for the next science fair. Last year, aSan Pasqual high school student was recognized for his work as was Yun Lutgen who was his robots classteacher. Tom Shaw Remembered

SHAW, THOMAS CHRISTOPHER "Larger Than Life" was the essence of ThomasChristopher Shaw, 62, born on June 20, 1949, whom passed away on Saturday,January 28, 2012, surrounded by his family and friends. His signature sense ofhumor, quick wit and contagious zest for life will live forever in the many lives hetouched. The day before he passed, he said, "Even if I don't make it, I've made it."He truly lived a hundred lifetimes in one. He was the living definition of "Carpe Diem"and earned the title commonly phrased "The Life of The Party" for he never missedan opportunity to enjoy the company of others. His unforgettable smile and Scottishaccent originated from Glasgow, Scotland where he was born to Thomas andMaureen Shaw, in addition to his six siblings: Alice, Phyllis, Brian, Carol, Paulineand Gerry. He later settled in San Diego, California with his former spouse Debrawhom gave life to his two children, Chris and Heather. His daughter-in-law, Liz, gavelife to his two grandchildren, William and Owen. Always to be seen alongsideThomas was his lifelong friend and partner, Katy Kellers. His career passionblossomed in the arena of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, where we sailedthe many seas aboard Princess Cruise Lines and finished his days as the VicePresident of Alpha Mechanical Services and Engineering in San Diego. ThomasShaw was a giant in life and in the HVAC industry, and many will remember him as"T-Chillerman." His memorial service took place on Saturday, February 11th.
