ASHMERE TALK June 2014 H undreds of UK care homes are joining forces with care services on the other side of the world and also South Africa, looking to create the largest virtual Mexican wave in history to celebrate the World Cup in Brazil, at the same time as marking National Care Home Open Day (NCHOD) on June 20. The wave will begin in Australia, from where care homes will then send video of their waves to homes in the South of England when the wave will then start spreading north across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Film and photos will be exhibited on the NCHOD Twitter feed, where visitors will be able to watch the wave travel across the globe and join the fun using hashtags #nchod and #carewave Ambassador Gloria Hunniford is delighted that so many care homes will be getting involved, commenting: “The Mexican wave taking place this year is a wonderful opportunity for care homes across the world to join together in promoting the importance of care homes to their local communities in all nations, including the UK.

CODNOR PARK NEWS

Good Friday the residents had a visit from fern the shetland pony. Fern came from the Pheonix Foundation who raise money for diabled childrens quipment. All the residents thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Since the last newsletter we have been buisy gardening, entertainment gallore, making things and more. We’ve even been in the local newspaper about the 6 jam jars of coins we’ve managed to collect so far for the pennies for heroes appeal.

We had a masquarade ball themed day. the residents make individual masks and all the staff were dressed in gowns for the occassion. we had a good old sing along with some of the residents from King William visiting also.

The Touring Cinema has been back with Easter parade. the popcorn always goes down a treat.

Wednesday 24th June at 4pm the “lets get together” childrens group from codnor methodist church will be visiting to present the residents with bug houses they have made for the garden. The children will be singing a song also, everyone is welcome. Lynsey is back with the ever popular arm chair exercise one a fortnight Banjo man David Straker is with us next week also on wednesday 25th june at 2pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the show.

The Touring Cinema is back with fred astaire and ginger rogers “care free”.Friday 27th June 2pm, with a sing along around the piano beforehand. come and enjoy the popcorn and a afternoon at the theatre.

We are taking part in ‘National Care Day’ with an Hawaiian theme.

Residents and staff have been busy making garlands and posters for the day.

Residents have stayed up to watch the England team play, lots of beer and crisps flowing.

Razzle Dazzle to sing and entertain the residents, and staff. Residents love listening and joining in with singing!

Dominoes are being played morning and evening.

Bingo is being played and enjoyed in ECU.

On the 17th June in the afternoon, the residents have visited Ripley for tea, coffee and cake.

Some residents are making the most of the sun and enjoying their time and meals in the garden, and keeping fit with the staff.

KIDSLEY GRANGE NEWS

Residents enjoyed a planting session. We decided to plant some tomatoes and fingers crossed for lots of

tomatoes that residents can enjoy when we make our own tomato chutney. Aldecar beauty school will be here at Kidsley on 19th June to pamper the residents with mainicures and hand massage. Our boat trip on the St. Johns Nottingham Crusader on the 26th June residents enjoyed it so much last year that we had to go again.

KING WILLIAM NEWS

The Easter Fayre at King William was a great success, a big thank you to

all staff, residents, family and friends who made it a great day. Roy Kelly provided entertainment and there was a special performance by our own Andy Barber who sang along with Roy, it went down a storm.

There was a cake stall, raffle; Guess the Rabbits Name, Easter Egg Trail,Lucky Dip, Egg

decorating competition - the winning egg was decorated by Minnie Hubball and ‘Guess How Many Eggs’ in the jar competition.

Upcoming events:

We would like to invite everyone to our Summer Fayre, which will take place on 18th July, there will be a cake stall, raffle, treasure hunt, hook a duck and much more. We will see the return of singer Roy Kelly and hope to see plenty of people dancing and singing along.

The Touring Local Cinema will be visiting King William on 28th July, film choice TBC.

Birthdays: Evelyn Slack 25th June, Sarah Hill 16th July and Phyllis Gibson 21st July. Many happy returns, we hope that you have a wonderful day.

We celebrated Edna Tatten-Jones’s 90th Birthday in style this month, with entertainment from Kevin and Marie. A good time was had by all and many residents were showing off their moves on the dance floor.

SMALLEY HALL NEWS

On the 13th of June Aldecar schools year 7’s invited us to their ‘Act of kindness’ presentation, their act of kindness to us was to provide us with tea & cakes which were beautifully made by Aldecar school. students and in return they asked us to pass on a random act of kindness to someone else. A lovely idea and a start to a long chain of acts of kindness. I hope. Whilst we were enjoying the afternoon we shared it with other homes too and we bumped into one of our former residents Frank Buxton. Doris and May were thrilled to see him again and had a good catch up.

We went out for a pub lunch on the 6th June with Jeff Cresswell as it was his birthday, and on the 11th of June we

enjoyed an entertainment morning when Razel Dazzle came to entertain us with their songs from the musicals which combined with our coffee morning. It was a great success.

Inspiritive art payed us a visit on the 21st and sang to us we played with musical instruments and had a good time. Then on the 27th We took a trip out to DH Lawrence Heritage to the tea rooms where we enjoyed a cuppa tea and cake.

On the 15th May we enjoyed a lovely cruise along the river trent on the

nottingham crusader. We had a lovely picnic tea and a sing song it was a great day.

On Monday the 19th it was a lovely day so we decided to go to ‘The Bell’ for a pub lunch Mike, Hazel, Betty, Barbara, Zona, Sally, Gwen, Mar.

VALLEY LODGE NEWS

We have been busy making jelly and bread rolls for our tea. Sadie,

Dosh and Anne really enjoyed our cooking.

Our lunch has been going really well. Thank you to all our activities co-ordinators and Ron our volunteer mini

bus drive for their help. We have been able to take out the lunch club members and residents to Carsington and Monseal Head.

We had Colin Jackson to sing and dance for us. Brenda had a brilliant time dancing and singing with Colin and the staff had a good dance.

Dosh even got up and danced with Annie.

We have been enjoying playing dominoes, ludo, cards and scrabble.

We have been very busy planting our sunflower seeds and planting our summer

plants. They have really grown, ready to plant.

We had a visit from the Y.M.C.A they came along to chat to all the residents. Thank you for the visit Penelope.

We have a photo in next months issue of the residents 6 week old rabbit.

This month we have been visited by Frankie fortune and Cass the Elvis impersonator who got our residents singing and dancing away, we have also been visited by animal magic and got up close and personal with the creepers finally we took a few of our residents to visit Babington dog kennels which was a lovely surprise despite one of our residents trying to bring all 79 dogs back to West Hallam with her.

Upcoming events:

We have the Oriental Bistro Night coming up on Tuesday 1 July from 6pm onwards, we also have our summer fete coming up on Saturday 16th august from 2pm to 4pm. We hope to see you all there.

We would like say goodbye to Tracey Harris who left us this week and wish her well with all future endeavours from everyone here at West Hallam
