A man once suggested to his friend, “I suppose there are two views about everything.”

His friend replied, “Two views? There are a dozen views about everything until you know the answer. Then there’s never more than one.”

(That Hideous Strength. C.S. Lewis)

We at the AFDA only have one view about our children - each one has been made in the image of God. Each one has been gifted with unique abilities. With this view in mind, we strive for and work toward our one goal - that our children will become contributing citizens of this great nation.

No, not every person contributes to society in the same manner. The same can be said about my very own body. My right eye is much smaller than my right leg, however, even though it’s small, I would miss it terribly if I didn’t have it. In the same way, our children will contribute differently to this nation than you do. We at AFDA believe that this diversity, though, is a good thing. Diversity, in fact, is the strength of a nation, not its weakness.

We labour for the day when our children will be accepted as fellow contributors and valued members of our society. In this report, you will be able to see the many ways in which we at AFDA work toward this goal. Over the past year, so many of you have been generous in so many ways - with your time, with your money, with your prayers. Thank you for your support.

Please do continue to pray for us and partner with us as we continue this work of serving children who seem to be forgotten by society. The truth is, they are not forgotten. The God who made them loves them. There is only one, correct view about that.

Serving with you,

Geeta Mondol

Who We Are

Ashish Foundation, also known as the Ashish Foundation for the Differently Abled (AFDA) Charitable Trust, was established in 2007 in order to serve children who are differently abled. Often, children who are differently abled are pushed to the margins of society, sometimes even in their own families. AFDA exists to reach out to these children, and especially children with autism, who are often the most shunned due to the various issues with which they struggle.

Belief• Each child is created in the

image of God.• Each child is created for a

purpose.• Each child is born with the

potential to achieve the purpose for which he or she was created.

• No one is exempt from giving back to society.

• All us are differently abled.

Vision

We envision transformed communities of people who view and value each differently abled person as created in God’s image, and inherently able to attain his or her God-given potential to lead a fulfilling life.

Mission

• To provide wholistic education and support to children with disabilities and their families so that they can achieve their God-given potential.

• To create awareness in the community for constructive response and engagement.

Motto

“Your work produced by faith;

Your labour prompted by love;

Your endurance is inspired by hope”

(1 Thessalonians 1:3, the Bible)

• To create awareness of and sensitivity towards persons with disabilities within communities, and transform the way in which people view persons with disabilities.

• To involve communities in providing support for and assistance to persons with disabilities.

• To connect families who have children with disabilities so that they might support and encourage one another.

• To spiritually nurture children with disabilities and their families.

The Ashish Centre is our early intervention program for children who are differently abled. At the Centre, we provide a well rounded, wholistic education for our children. We design individualised curricula for each student in order to accommodate the needs of each one. Our goal is to see each of our students become independent members of and contributors to the larger society. Our students are between the ages of 3-18, and we maintain a ratio of 1:2 adult to child, and 1:4 special educator to student.

We provide quality intervention to children with autism and other developmental disabilities. • Speech/Language Therapy• Occupational/Physio Therapy• Physical Education• Pre-Vocational and Vocational Education for children over 13 yrs• Behavioural Therapy• Daily Living Activities and Training• Special Education• Complete educational assessment for every child to help enhance

strengths and buffer weaknesses• Home visits for in-home support and training• Parent and student counselling sessions with development of

Home Therapy Plans• 90% of students receive a scholarship from 20% to 97% on their

fees.• Provide out-patient Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and

Speech Therapy Services for children who are not part of the Ashish Centre.

Projects & Activities

Projects & Activities

Ankur is our vocational program through which we help our older students become as independent as possible. In Ankur, we provide direct instruction in 3 main areas:

• Independent living skills such as dressing, proper hygiene, cooking, house cleaning and shopping.

• Leisure activities such as dancing, skating and group sport activities so that the students will know how to use free time appropriately.

• Vocational skills so that one day, the students may be able to find sustainable employment. These include paper bag making, jewellery making and coaster making, among other things.

All Ashish Centre students 13 years and older receive pre-vocational and vocational training through Ankur.

In 2013-14, we were able to participate in multiple melas and embassy holiday sales where we sold products created by the students in Ankur.

Sneh Sadan was originally our community outreach program touching typically-functioning students from a low-income community located near the Ashish Centre. It is now a classroom in the Ashish Centre specifically dedicated to serving differently abled children from this same community.

Each family who has a child in Sneh Sadan pays a nominal fee to ensure the family’s commitment to education. Sneh Sadah children are provided the same services as all of our other students with disabilities.

In 2013-14, we provided complete therapies to 11 children from this community. We provide free pick-up and drop-off each day. We also help counsel and guide the parents in dealing with their children’s needs.

Projects & Activities

Established as India’s first ever thrift store run by young adults with Autism, Second Chance was awarded the Intel Social Innovation of the Year in 2011. The store has a threefold objective:

• To involve the larger community in sharing their new or gently used items with others.

• To provide differently-abled persons with a means of employment so that they can be contributing members of society, not mere “receivers.”

• To give low-income families the dignity of being able to purchase goods for themselves.

In 2013-14, we sold over 4,00,000Rs worth of resale items at Second Chance, and provided market-related skills and experience to 5 early adult students.
