INTRODUCTION:- As Electricity has become one of the most essential
requirement for human existence and development.
The Availability of electricity to all is essential for the sustainable development of a society.
So for the sustainable development of our state Kerala the augmentation of power is necessary.
Here we discuss about the issues and challenges faced by power sector of the state and solutions for it.

POWER SCENARIO OF KERALA :- The electricity scenario in Kerala is at a turning point, as the state is making a shift from hydro sources to non-hydro sources of power generation.
Power scenario in the state is becoming complex day by day because of scarcity of power especially during peak hours.
The total installed capacity of the state is 2846.001 MW (11941.9 MU).

2194.135 MW is generated by KSEB owned station and the remaining of independent power producers.
Average peak hour demand of Kerala is about 3400 MW with a daily demand of around 60 MU.
Around 15 MU of this demand is met from the state generation.
The rest of the demand is catered by central share and purchases from power trade exchanges and via independent power producers.

ISSUES AND CHALLENGES:
Increasing Domestic Consumption:-• A key issue faced by the state is ever increasing domestic
(household). As most of the households are electrified.
Transmission and Distribution:-• For the past many years, Kerala has been consistently
maintaining a very poor T & D system, which led to a very high T & D losses.
• Non availability of Transmission corridor has made the power from central share and purchase exchange outside the state
very difficult.

Cost Escalation and Delay in Implementing Projects:-
• Most of the power projects in the state get delayed due to many factors increase the cost of the project.
• The delay in the projects incur opportunity cost on the state.
Environmental Concerns :-
• As Kerala is located at the western Ghats the implementation of the hydroelectric projects have ecological concerns.

Power theft:-
• Power theft refers to taking connections from overhead or underground supply lines before getting recorded by meter.
• Power theft also increases the transmission losses.

Non Payment of Tariff:-
• Other big challenge for power sector in Kerala is the non payment of the tariff charges by big consumers.
• The non payment by big consumers have caused KSEB deficient in funds.

SOLUTIONS :
The solutions for the different issues and challenges are:-
Rooftop solar panels:
• The introduction of solar panels on the rooftop of both domestic and commercial consumers will not only make the consumer independent of grid.
• This will also give KSEB additional power in the grid for supply.
![Page 14: Ashik.S and Roopesh. R. Nair seminar 2016](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022082906/58f0eaf71a28ab1e198b4593/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)

14
Floating solar panels:
• As the state have many ponds and dams the solar panels can be kept floating on it for solar power.
• This will also decrease the rate of evaporation of water in the hydroelectric projects.
![Page 15: Ashik.S and Roopesh. R. Nair seminar 2016](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022082906/58f0eaf71a28ab1e198b4593/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)

Small or Mini hydroelectric projects:
• To avoid the ecological damages the implementation of small hydroelectric projects in place of large projects.
• This will also help to overcome time delay and cost escalation caused in large scale projects.

Construction of transmission corridor:
• This is necessary for transmission of power purchased from power exchanges.
• For this we have to speed up land acquisition process.
![Page 17: Ashik.S and Roopesh. R. Nair seminar 2016](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022082906/58f0eaf71a28ab1e198b4593/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)

Improving Transmission and distribution network:-
• We should improve our transmission and distribution system for reducing the transmission and distribution losses.
Promote the use of energy efficient equipments:-
• We should promote the usage of energy efficient equipments to decrease the household consumption.
![Page 18: Ashik.S and Roopesh. R. Nair seminar 2016](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022082906/58f0eaf71a28ab1e198b4593/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)

Avoiding power Theft:-
• We should check regularly to avoid power theft .
• We should also make the public the problems that cause to the state.
Improving Tariff collection:-
• Tariff collection should be made more efficient to avoid large dues.
• Strict action should be taken against defaulters.
