Ashby School A-Level Maths Handbook 2016-17
~ 2 ~
Introduction Welcome to the A-level Maths Course! This handbook is intended to provide
you with a guide to making the best use of your time during the A-level
course, to remind you throughout the course of what help is available to you,
to let you know about how you will be assessed throughout the course and to
help you understand how you can access key materials.
Maths is a challenging and rewarding course and will require a lot of hard
work. You should expect to find that you spend a lot more time on your
maths course than you did at GCSE. It is, however, a highly respected A-level
course – Universities and Employers know that Maths A-level is difficult and if
you achieve in A-level Maths then it will be something you can use for the
rest of your life.
You are probably going to get a lot of homework this year, but on top of this
homework you need to be doing your own self-study. We would expect that
for every hour you spend in class you should spend another hour looking over
the work that you have done and trying to complete the exercises that are
set. If you can get into the habit of doing this you will see lots of progress over
this year.
We strongly recommend the use of a graphical calculator for this course, or at
least a calculator that goes beyond the one you were probably using at GCSE.
Order one of these calculators from the maths office and if you aren’t sure
whether your calculator is suitable then speak to your maths teacher.
If at any point you are struggling with the course, please speak to your
teachers in the first instance.
We hope you enjoy maths this year and all of the faculty wish you every
success.
~ 3 ~
Before morning exams we run breakfast revision sessions so that you can ask any last minute
questions you may have, or just have some orange juice and get yourself ready.

Course Structure The course is split into an AS-Level year and an A-Level year. It is an old-style
A-level where an AS is worth half of the A-level. The AS-Level is made up of 3
modules and the A-Level made up of your AS-level and a further 3 modules.
Each module is equally weighted and you will be given a UMS score out of
100, meaning the AS-Level course is a score out of 300 and the A-Level course
is a score out of 600. The grade boundaries are given below:
Grade AS-Level A-Level
A 240 480
B 210 420
C 180 360
D 150 300
E 120 240
At A-level you can achieve an A* grade. To achieve this you will need to get
an A overall and score over 180 UMS on your combined total for the C3 and
C4 modules that you sit at the end of Year 13.
Our module offering for this year is that in Year 12 you will study Core 1 and
Core 2 alongside an applied module. This year all of Year 12 will be taking
Probability and Statistics 1 as their applied module.
Year 13s will be taking Core 3 and Core 4 and will be given the choice of their
applied module – either Mechanics 1 or Decision 1. This choice should have
already been made by the time you are in Year 13.
If you have chosen to study Further Maths then your teachers will have more
information for you about how that course is structured.
In both Year 12 and Year 13 you will have two sets of lessons: ‘Core’ lessons
and ‘Applied’ lessons.
In Year 12 the core lessons will be following Core 1 up until the October half
term, followed by Core 2. The applied lessons will also be covering the
~ 5 ~
content of Core 1 with you up until half term, followed by the Probability and
Statistics 1 course.
In Year 13 the core lessons will be doing Core 3 with you up until the October
half term, followed by Core 4. The applied lessons will also cover the content
of Core 3 with you up until half term, followed by the content of your applied
course.
A summary of what you will be covering in your lessons is provided later in
this handbook.
All courses are examined with final exams in May/June.

Exam Resources During revision periods the department expects you to bring past papers with
you to lessons. In the past this would have been through you having a folder
of past papers, however, with new technologies there are other options
available.
In class you can use the school’s WIFI network to access papers and mark
schemes through your phone, tablet or laptop. For instructions as to how to
use Bring Your Own Device please consult your teachers.
If you would prefer not to use your own device then you can print off past
papers from home and bring them with you to the lesson, or you will be able
to buy a past paper pack from the maths office for £1 per module pack.
The department will provide you with a formula booklet which you should
put in your folder and bring with you to every lesson.
~ 8 ~
Support through the Course It would be nice to think that everyone will find the A-level course really easy
and breeze to A grades without any trouble along the way, but unfortunately
this is not realistic. Whilst you are expected to work hard and face challenges
throughout the course, we don’t expect you to persevere alone. There are a
number of opportunities for you to get support.
Drop-in Sessions
Every Thursday the maths faculty runs a popular A-level drop in session. If you
are having any trouble with material on the course, or if you just fancy doing
an hour of homework in a supportive environment, then come along to B5
after school on a Thursday. Not only will teachers be available to help you,
you may find other students able to help, or you may want to come along to a
place where you can work with your friends in other classes. Biscuits are
provided in every session!
Twitter Support
If you are struggling with work at home and don’t know how to approach a
question then you can use our online Twitter support. Take a photo of the
question you are struggling on and any working you’ve done so far, and tweet
it to @ashbymaths: we aim to get back to you as soon as possible (please
note that if your tweets are protected then you won’t be able to send them
as we will be unable to read them – if you do this then consider setting up an
alternative twitter account to use for maths.)
Livemaths
We subscribe to the livemaths.co.uk website which has videos of work
solutions to exam questions and alternative lessons for work that you may
have missed, or would just like re-explaining. You should get a login for this
from your teachers within the first few weeks of the course.
Mymaths
Mymaths isn’t just for GCSE! There are plenty of A-level tasks on mymaths as
well which are designed to help you.
~ 9 ~
Revision Books
We sell a variety of revision books in the maths office that you can buy at a
price cheaper than in the shops!
Extra Support Sessions
During the year if we feel that you are struggling with your studies then you
may be invited along to extra support sessions so that we can help you to
achieve your targets.
Graphical Calculator Support
Look out for Graphical calculator support sessions through the year that are
designed to help you use this complicated piece of equipment. If you know
how to use it then we think it is well worth it!
~ 10 ~
Extra-Curricular Activities Maths Prefecting
The department runs a Maths Prefecting programme that is designed to get
you in the classroom helping with younger students and helping them to
understand maths. At first you will prefect in the classroom and if you begin
to feel confident there are opportunities for you to take it further and take
parts of lessons.
You may get involved in helping younger students by running lessons in the Learning Hub or
working with Primary School students.
Trips
Each year we run a popular Maths Inspiration trip for our Year 12s where we
get a tour of a University, a talk from an admissions tutor and then in the
afternoon we attend a series of Maths Lectures. Previous lectures have been
on the Maths of Juggling, Adventures in 4 Dimensions and Maths and the
Simpsons.
~ 11 ~
Students on a tour around St. John’s College, Cambridge
Maths Challenges
We run the Senior Maths Challenge for both Year 12s and Year 13s, This year
it will be on November 8th. If you are successful in taking part in the SMC then
there is a chance to qualify for subsequent rounds and we will help you to
train for these.
Preparation for University Entrance Exams
The faculty is prepared to offer teaching towards papers such as STEP. If you
feel this may concern you and what you need for university then contact Mr

Ongoing Assessments During the course there will be set times when you will receive detailed
feedback on your progress so far so that you get the best idea of how you are
doing compared to where you should be.
At each of these stages you will get a ‘Green’, ‘Amber’ or ‘Red’ mark which
should indicate how you are progressing. If you are receiving mostly Green
marks it shows you are making excellent progress, whereas if you are
receiving mostly Red marks it suggests that something is not going right and
you should explore ways of making better progress.
You should expect to find these assessments challenging but they are really
important interim steps through the course to ensure you are best prepared
for the challenge of the exams and to give you an idea of how you are doing.
You will receive a sheet that you need to put in the front of your maths folder
and keep updated. Your teachers will check this with you and help you to
keep this updated.
If you ever have any concerns please contact Mr Blatherwick
([email protected]) or Mr Weston
