It's hard to believe we are nearingthe end of another term. We have

been very busy in the art roomand are really looking forward toshowing off some of the children'sart work at our shows! Firstly wehave the Geelong Show on theweekend of October the 15th.The children's work is exhibitedin the education pavilion alongwith other schools from theregion. It's always with a sense of

pride that the children have theirwork displayed and are often

excited to see it exhibitedalongside their peers. Ashbychildren's work has done verywell in the past, with us winningfirst prize last year.

Our own art show is on SaturdayNovember 5th and this is also afabulous opportunity for thechildren to have their workdisplayed, not only for families tocome and view, but for a widercommunity with the hosting ofthe Market Day at Ashby. Thechildren will also have their ownstall where we will be selling clay

garden creations made by thestudents of this school.

    AAAARTRTRTRT RRRROOMOOMOOMOOM

Help is needed to get all thesethings done. If you can help with

the Geelong show, either byhelping set up the display onMonday October 10th or by doinga turn of duty and sitting in theeducation pavilion for an hour onthe Saturday, that would be great.Or it would be wonderful if wecould have some helpers to mountthe art work, or to help thread thewind-chimes for our own Ashbyshow in November. If you canhelp at all could you please see

me in the art room on a Mondayor a Wednesday or contact theoffice and they can pass yourdetails onto me. A lot of the workcan be done from home if it'seasier. Also we will be starting

getting ready to decorate theChristmas tree in Pakington Streetand always love donations ofrecycled items, anything really, but preferably water proof eg. oldcutlery, plastic bottles (we'll needlots of those this year), beads,

    plastic cups, containers, lids etc.

    Best regards,

    Kathy Hyland.

In order to improve communication between the School Council and the larger school community

the School Council will be sharing a summary of its meetings each month. This information will beshared via the weekly school newsletter and the new school council blog(www.ashbycouncil.blogspot.com). Below is the summary from the Councils August meeting(Wednesday, August 17th):

School ReviewAll initial information has been collected and our critical friend is working ona draft report using this information and other data available on the school (e.g. surveys,NAPLAN scores). A school review day will be held on August 31stto explore informationgathered, the draft report and get further feedback.

Community Usage of School Facilities PolicyWith the completion of the BER there havebeen some queries about use of our renovated school facilities by community. We currently

dont have a policy in place related to this kind of usage. We are researching similar policiesfrom other schools with the intention to create our own policy.

Principals Report The staff who joined us in term 3 including Gavin Dowling (music) andStephanie Pritchard (Grade 5/6B) are settling in well. The BER has effectively been completed.A small amount of money was included in the BER for new furniture and technology. Newfurniture has been ordered for the library/resource centre and one of the grade 5/6 classrooms.New computers have been ordered for the resource centre. We have gotten quotes on lightsand sound equipment for the hall and new stage. There is also a plan to hold an official event(a bush dance) to celebrate the completion of the BER in October (Term 4)

Friends of Ashby Report The Annual Art Show will be held on Saturday November 5thfrom10am-3pm. The event will also include a market day to engage the outside community as well.Stall holders for the market are currently being sought. FOA has decided to not use lets getgrowing as a fundraiser this year. While it was successful last year raising about $1500, thefeeling is that it can be overkill to do this kind of fundraiser every year. The Coles andWoolworths promotions are both going well, with Woolworths promotion ending September18thand the Coles promotion ending October 18th.

Garden/Chook Shed this structure has been effectively completed thanks to the efforts ofvolunteer parents. All gardening items have now been moved into the structure. The chickencoop component does still require chicken wire. Quotes are being sought on needed supplies.

No trespassing signs The school will be getting no trespassing signs to put up on the schoolgrounds.

Classroom Kitchen/Garden Program Sub-committee With the completion of the newclassroom kitchen to ensure its use and the development of needed policies related to it theCouncil is discussing a proposal to create an ad hoc sub-committee of council members, parents, staff and community members to help with developing such a plan and policies.

If you have questions or wish to raise any issues or concerns with the School Council please [email protected]. Our next School Council meeting is Wednesday, September 14th at 7pmin the staff room. All are welcome!
