BACKGROUND• Asha Darshan is one of the oldest AfE-SV projects, running since the year 2000• Asha Darshan Trust is a grassroots NGO and an AfE affiliate, similar to Asha Trust• Biju Borbaruah is the principal coordinator of Asha Darshan and has been working

in the area since 1998• Asha Darshan’s work is broadly organized into:

• Education • Women Empowerment• Community Development

OVERVIEW• Asha Darshan’s education program spans 8 villages in Baksa and Tamalpur

districts of Assam• Education Program has expanded into Manipur with support from Stamford

• Primary site of Asha Darshan’s is Bodo tribal area• Primarily agrarian society with large population dependent on small farming or

seasonal labor • The region has been historically marred by violent conflicts and militancy • Political agreements and arrangements over the past decade have brought some

normalcy to the region , however, there’s little improvement in the lives of people• Access to affordable and quality education and healthcare continues to be a

challenge • Relatively high [and rising] drug & substance abuse in the area

EDUCATION PROGRAM• Asha Darshan runs schools with community support where there is a need and demand• Since 2001 Asha Darshan has started 24 schools, of which 15 schools have been either

converted (to) or adopted by the Government! One school was merged with the local govt school in 2017

• Asha Darshan currently runs 8 schools• Nagapur (Assamese medium)• Nagapur (Bodo medium)• Shimliguri • Shantipur #1• Shantipur #2• Devinagar• Satyanarayanpur• Abhayapur

EDUCATION PROGRAM• Most schools are in temporary construction, with concrete floors but bamboo walls/roofs, and

need annual (or frequent) repairs, especially during the rains • Community generally works together on maintenance and repairs of the schools • Schools are typically constructed on community [donated] land • Field staff visits the schools 2/3 days every week and parents frequently visit and meet at the

school• SMC meetings are conducted every month, students, parents, and community at large attends

the SMC meetings to discuss issues including, but not limited to, the school.• Teacher meetings are held in rotation bases every month or two months• There’s a monthly meeting, last Sunday of every month, of teachers at Asha Darshan center in

Bogajuli or Tamalpur• Progress of all schools is discussed along with a post-training follow-up

• Annual teacher training program for all teachers • Conducted with help from Asha Trust or other local NGOs with expertise in teacher training

UPDATES 2017-18▪ Mid-Day Meal: School kitchens are improved with essential utensils like saucepan,

serving spoon, big pan, kettle, water filter, plastic bucket, aluminum bucket etc. as per requirement of the schools. Meals have been served in all the school days 5 days a week.▪ Procured First Aid Box and Thermometer for the schools▪ Reading material Books, charts, Assamese dictionary ‘Hemkos’ and Assam Map▪ Teacher’s meetings are held regularly in a rotation basis in the schools of Asha

School ActivitiesSports Day: on 3rd September sport’s day was celebrated in all the 8 schools of Asha Darshan by organizing game competitions, march-past and flag hoisting. There was short speech session about Olympiad Bhogeswar Baruah who is sports icon of Assam.

Other festival: Saraswati puja was organized in the schools on 1st February. Nagapur school celebrated pija with great enthuse, decorating school approach road with colorful glittery flags, worship, and Prasad Bitoron.

Science Activities (4-05-2017): 60 students were taken to Guwahati to show science museum, planetarium, Shankrdev Kalakshetra, Umanada Temple, Balaji Temple, Air port and Saraighat Bridge.

Teaching Learning Materials▪ Stationary items bought: Teacher’s attendance registers, Students’ attendance

register, stapler with pin, cello tape, globes, gems clip, chart paper and green board etc are bought in 2017 ▪ Sometimes teacher shows the actual object (such as flowers, fruits etc) if it is

available. ▪ From Chennai some math teaching kits namely spiked abacus-7spikes, spiked

abacus-4spikes, fraction circle, base ten-3 Digit (new) and Ganitmala are bought. Teachers are using these kits in a rotation basis because quantity is not sufficient for all school. ▪ We proposed to buy more kits for all schools, quotations already collected from

Jodo Gyan Research Centre and Ramanujan Museum. This will be procured in 2018-19. Sample kit and pricing at this link

SCHOOL REPAIR▪ School-walls were temporary which were made of bamboo so every year repairs

are done to get its original shape. Mother’s group members in each school came forward to cooperate in school repair. In some schools they plastered school-walls with mixture of cow-dung & mud. Where this type repairing was not possible the walls were replaced with new torja bera (readymade bamboo sheet).

Mahila Shanti Sena & Self Help GroupsMahila Shanti Sena have been conducting awareness, training programme on various social issues which created awareness against domestic violence, witch-hunting, dowry system.

This concept of women peace brigade is getting replicated elsewhere outside the region like the state of Bihar. The women’s brigades have successfully handled cases of domestic violence against women in many places.

450 SHGs of nearly 6,735 women have been formed to encourage the habit of small savings. These SHGs are linked to the banks.

Success Story▪ In the last year Banaraj Singa has completed BBA course from Punjab. He is a bright student, now preparing

for UPSC Exams in Guwahati. ▪ Last year many student of Asha Darshan origin are doing good in HSLC Examinations. Janaki Devi (70%), Roshan

Kharka (70%), Mintu Barman (70%), Abhimanya Mandal (67%), Nakul Das (64%) and Nirmala Barman (61%), Prashanta Sing (60%) and Maneswar Barman (60%) are some students whose result made Asha Darshan Schools proud.

▪ Some more students namely Ustu Barman and Tilak Barman, have passed HS science stream and doing degree in Arts.

▪ Dolma Lama was interested in music; she has completed visaradh in Indian Classical music. Now teaching as music teacher. One more girl Anju Devi did visaradh in this subject. Dolma Lama and Anju Devi also ranked 1st position in both the exams HSLC and HS. They have joined BA courses.

▪ Joycharan Barman is a student of degree 6th semester. He is contributing in teaching in same school (Satynarayanpur LP) from where passed. Thus, more than 30 students from Satyanarayanpur School alone are studying in HS courses. Nagapur ME school produced total 82 students who have passed in HSLC examinations in a period from 2012-2018. This year one student has achieved letter marks in Bodo Language. Hope, we will be able to create more brilliant student in the future.
