CONFERENCE LOCATIONConference headquarters is the Hyatt Regency O’Hare (www.ohare.hyatt.com),located minutes from the airport with complimentary shuttle service to andfrom the airport. There is convenient access to metropolitan Chicago via CTAtrain or ground transportation. The largest public display of M.I. Hummel fig-urines in the world is found at the Donald E. Stephens Museum of Hummels,a short walk from the hotel.

There is much to see and do in the Chicago area. You can do it on your own or join in on one of our post- or pre-conference tours. Post conference toursinclude the Chicago History Museum’s Costume and Textiles Gallery; fabricshopping in the Chicago area to include Vogue Fabrics and Fishman’s Fabrics; a day trip to Nancy’s Notions in Beaver Dam, Wis.; and a Chicago city tour.Spouses are more than welcome at ASG conferences! Several tours with specific“spouse appeal” have been scheduled during conference so everyone hassomething exciting to do.

Happy Birthday, ASG! This year, ASG celebrates its 30th birthday—and what betterplace to celebrate than at ASG Conference 2008? Our conferencelocation is Chicago, America’s third largest city—a location that iswithin the closest proximity to the greatest number of ASGmembers. For those not in driving distance, Chicago is the homeof O’Hare International Airport, one of America’s best-connectedairports.

This year’s conference features 37 instructors offering over 100workshops, seminars, and lectures in all-day, half-day, two-hour,and 90-minute formats. Our teachers are a veritable “who’swho” of the sewing industry, offering the newest and best information on fitting, couture techniques, home dec sewing,embellishment, surface design, quilting, jewelry and accessories,and more. Special events include Thursday evening’s Exhibit HallPreview Night, Friday morning’s Spouses’ Welcome, Saturday’sWear Your ASG Pattern Day, and seven off-site tours of excitingattractions in and around Chicago.

And we’ll do some celebrating! At Friday’s breakfast, we’ll celebrate our Chapters of the Year, Member of the Year, andCommunity Service Volunteer of the Year. On Friday evening,we’ll celebrate our sewing skills with Sewing Pearls of Passion,the crowd-pleasing member/instructor/exhibitor fashion show.At Saturday’s lunch, we’ll salute the winners of the ASG 2008Creativity Contest. And Saturday evening at a special ASG DinnerGala, we’ll honor the newest inductee to the Sewing Hall ofFame—and celebrate everything ASG has accomplished in thelast 30 years.

The National ASG Board of Directors,regional representatives, and chapter presi-dents will meet for a Leadership Day, whichincludes the annual Presidents’ BusinessMeeting and leadership training workshops.Full-day participation is required of chapterpresidents.

This exciting one-day event, which is beingorganized by DIYStyle (www.diystyle.net)and promoted throughout the Chicago area,takes place in conjunction with ASG Confer-ence 2008. From 12:00 noon on, the Pre-Function area of the Hyatt Regency O’Harewill be buzzing with activities aimed toattract 20-to-30-something sewers andwould-be sewers. For a small admission fee,these young people can enter the Design ItYourself Lab, which has five studios, com-plete with projects and sewing machines:Panty Raid, T-Shirt Surgery, The Green Bag,Denim Deconstruction, and DIYEmbroidered Label.

Stop by for a visit, absorb the sewing andcreative activity, and be inspired by this newgeneration of sewers.

The highlight of Friday’sluncheon is the keynoteaddress by Pati Palmer.Whether it is for books,articles, or designingpatterns and writingthe guide sheets, braindumping on paper hasbeen Pati’s life-longtalent. She willshare her careerpath, fulfillingdesires through

gutsy determination. She will discuss creativ-ity, timing, promotion, and partnering in aninspiring and sometimes humorous presen-tation.

Pati Palmer, president of Palmer/PletschPublishing, has been teaching sewing for 37years—first as an educator for ArmoInterfacing, next as a department storebuyer and home economist. Then she con-ducted seminars throughout North Americaand Australia for 15 years. She now ownsthe Palmer/Pletsch International School ofSewing in Portland, Oregon which trainsconsumers and educators. She has authored10 books, edited/publishing 20 more booksand 11 how-to DVDs.

From 1980 to the present, Pati hasdesigned and written instructions for morethan 100 patterns for The McCall Pattern Co.Prior to that, she designed for VoguePatterns. Her 1980 "8-Hour Blazer" forMcCall's, which sold one million copies inone year, was featured in the "Dreams onPaper" exhibit at the Fashion Institute ofTechnology in New York City. Pati hasappeared on television with Regis Philbinand on “Good Morning Australia,” and hashad her books and patterns featured inFamily Circle, Vogue, Australian Stitches,and all of the major sewing publications.

These one-hour networking and trainingsessions focus on running an ASG chapter.Classes will be taught or facilitated by ourown “experts.” Bonus sessions are open toall.
