ASEBIO 2006 REPORTExecutive Summary

1.

Executive Summary1.

According to ASEBIO estimation, over 500 enterprises undertook biotech activities in Spain in 2006, producing a turnover in excess of € 20,000 Million Some 200 companies cited biotechnology as their main activity; they employ over 3,000 people and invoice a figure approaching € 500 Million For both groups of firms, annual growth in invoicing, employee numbers and R&D spending approached 20%.

ThE SiTuaTion of ThE SpaniSh BioTEchnology SEcTorHealth care or red biotechnology, in both its therapy and diagnostic aspects, accounts for 39% of the sector. The companies with transverse technology platforms with applications in more than one area are undergoing strong growth and make up 33% of the overall figure. Agrifoodstuffs or green biotech applications account for 18% of the market and industrial or white biotechnology rose to account for 10%, to thus double its weight of the previous year.

Region of Madrid continues to lead in terms of numbers of enterprises, but it is losing ground against the biotech hubs of Catalonia and Andalusia, which are now home to 36% of these companies (18% each). The Valencia Region, the Basque Country and Galicia slightly impro-ved their ratios and round up the list of Autonomous Communities showing the highest concen-trations of biotech industry.

nEw EnTErpriSESThe Autonomous Community of Catalonia, followed by Andalusia and Madrid (respectively showing 30%, 23% and 21% of the new initiatives), have been the most active regions over recent months in terms of biotech company creation.

BuSinESS DEvElopmEnT acTiviTyIn the latter months, alliances (Table 3) grew both in number and importance. 37% of these alliances have been with an international partner, largely from Europe (17%) or from the U.S. (17%). This improved the sector’s internationalisation profile (in 200 only 32% of the alliances were international) and these were heavily biased towards agreements with the U.S.

human hEalTh carE (rED BioTEchnology)The portfolio of products (both in preclinical and clinical phases) has diversified considerably over recent months. Among the areas showing greatest potential, the most outstanding are oncology, infectious diseases, diabetes, self-immunity disorders, and pathologies relating to the central nervous system, with special emphasis on neurodegenerative diseases.

In the diagnosis market, the most important news for the sector in 2006 was the definition of a new legal framework for genetic analyses. In the meantime, the diagnosis area continued to show growth in the number new of companies created, and in parallel, the more veteran com-panies made ground in their consolidation.

A further two areas within healthcare biotechnology (support technologies for the discovery of drugs and projects focussed on the manufacturing of biological products), were especially dynamic in 2006.

agriculTurE, livESTocK anD fooD (grEEn Bio-TEchnology)The use of different modern biotech applications in the food industry is becoming increasingly more important and the signs are that it will be ubiquitous within very few years. The potential of diagnosis and traceability techniques or the opportunities they offer for increasing added value and safety in food products are the main vectors boosting the growth of an area in which there are now over 0 Spanish biotech companies.

As far as the cultivation of genetically improved (transge-nic) plant varieties are concerned, in 2006 Spain continued to be the European benchmark with a total of 3,667 hec-tares under cultivation. After 9 years of cultivation without a single adverse effect on people or on the environment, Catalonia and Aragon, the Autonomous Communities most prone to Ostrinia nubilalis attacks from the European corn borer, continued to be the largest sowers of transgenic mai-ze protected against this pest.

EnErgy anD BioprocESSES (whiTE BioTEchnology)In the industrial biotech sector, the most outstanding applications belong to the bioenergy areas where Spain plays a key international role through biofuel manufacturing companies and where national biotech companies are becoming better positioned.

productsCellerix is developing three products: Cx 01, Cx 01 and Cx 601. Cx 01 is a new alternative to the surgical treatment of fistulas, including those affecting patients with Crohn’s disease. It is currently being assessed in a Phase II multicentre clinical trial. This product, suitable for complex perianal fistulas, obtained the Orphan Medicinal Product designation from the EMEA in July 200. CX 01 comprises a sheet of chimeric skin, currently at the advanced preclinical stage. This is indicated for the treatment of Epidermolysis bullosa, a congenital defect that gives rise to the formation of blisters on the skin at the slightest touch. This indication complies with orphan medicinal product requirements. CX 601 is an innovative approach for improving the evolution of sutures that usually lead to scarring problems, such as the colon anastomosis. This is currently at the preclinical stage. Both Cx 01 and Cx 601 are based on the use of adult stem cells from the patient’s own adipose tissue. Cx01 is a chimeric skin composed of keratinocytes from the patient and fibrobalsts from a donor.
