• Co-funding from Department of Agriculture enabled attendance by several, world experts on downy mildews in addition to the trainers supported by the ARDN Project

• Workshop provided platform for a project on the taxonomy of downy mildews, which relied heavily on collaboration with ASEAN workshop participants

Phase II: Remaining activities

• Aim to submit and complete AANZFTA process before December 2019

• Possible scope:

Component 1. Collaborative activities to develop diagnostic resources and/or provide training in use of diagnostic resources (such as diagnostic protocols, keys, image libraries, etc.):

e.g. on-line, illustrated overview of SE Asian plant viruses; illustrated, commodity-based guides for quarantine inspectors; training in use of LAMP; molecular identification of pest nematodes; validation of diagnostic protocols for plant viruses; ‘refresher’ training in fruit fly identification

Component 2. Multi-country, diagnostic workshops for groups, commodities or crops of common interest:

e.g. identification of mites, weeds or new invasive pests (Spodoptera frugiperda, Tuta absoluta); pests and diseases of ornamental plants, cut flowers & foliage

Component 3. Mentoring (in-country training, attachments to diagnostic laboratories in Australia, New Zealand):

e.g. survey, identification of scale insects, mealybugs, nematodes, fungal or viral pathogens; activities linked to either Components 1 or 2

Component 4. Network strengthening:e.g. proficiency testing; on-line repository for information on diagnostics of common or emerging pests
