IntroductionTheOfficial ASE Study Guide of Automobile TestsisintendedtohelptechniciansstudyfortheASEcertificationtests.Theinformationinthisbookletcoversthetechnologyfoundinmostalloftoday’sautomobiles,sportutilityvehicles,andlighttrucks.Thespecificinformationabouteachtest,foundinthefollowingpages,shouldprovetobeausefultoolforreviewingthetechnicalknowledgethatiscoveredintheAutomobiletests.Afterperformingathoroughreview,itshouldbeeasiertoselectadditionalreferencematerialthatwillassistyouwithyourtestpreparationneeds. How Do I Become Certified?ThereareninetestsintheAutomobileTechniciancertificationseries.Ifyoupassoneormoretests,andhaveatleasttwoyearsofhands-onworkingexpe-rienceinautomotiverepair,youwillbecomecertifiedasanASEAutomobileTechnician.IfyoupasstestsA1throughA8andmeettheexperiencerequire-ment,youwillearnthecertificateofMasterAutomobileTechnician.Note:TestA9isnotrequiredforMasterAutomobileTechnicianstatus.(Appropriatevocationaltrainingmaybesubstitutedforuptooneyearofworkexperience.) Who Writes the Questions?Thequestions,writtenbyserviceindustryexpertsfamiliarwithallaspectsofautomobilerepair,areentirelyjob-related.Theyaredesignedtotesttheskillsthatyouneedtoknowinservicingautomobiles;theoreticalknowledgeisnotcovered. EachquestionhasitsrootsinanASE“item-writing”workshopwhereservicerepresentativesfromautomobilemanufacturers(domesticandimport),aftermarketpartsandequipmentmanufacturers,workingtechniciansandvoca-tionaleducatorsmeetinaworkshopsettingtoshareideasandtranslatethemintotestquestions.Eachtestquestionwrittenbytheseexpertsmustsurvivereviewbyallmembersofthegroup.Thequestionsarewrittentodealwithpracticalprob-lemsofdiagnosisandrepairexperiencedbytechniciansintheirday-to-daywork. Fromthere,allquestionsarepre-testedandquality-checkedonanationalsampleoftechnicians.ThosequestionsthatmeetASEstandardsofqualityandaccuracyareincludedinthescoredsectionsofthetests;the“rejects”aresentbacktothedrawingboardordiscardedaltogether. Eachcertificationtestismadeupofbetweenfortyandeightymultiple-choicequestions.Thepencilandpapertestingsessionsare4hoursand15minuteslong,allowingplentyoftimetocompleteseveraltests.Note: Eachtestcouldcontainupto15additionalquestionsthatareincludedforstatisticalresearchpurposesonly.Youranswerstothesequestionswillnotaffectyourscore,butsinceyoudonotknowwhichonestheyare,youshouldanswerallquestionsinthetest.Thefive-yearRecertificationTestwillcoverthesamecontentareasasthoselistedabove.However,thenumberofquestionsineachcontentareaoftheRecertificationTestwillbereducedbyaboutone-half.

How Do I Prepare for the ASE Tests?Becomefamiliarwithtestcontentandquestionformat:TheTestSpecificationsinthisbookletcontainasummarydescriptionofthecontentcoveredbyeachtest.TheTaskListsdescribetheactualworkperformedbytechniciansineachspecialtyarea.Together,theseforma“blueprint”forwritingandassembling theASEtests. Pleasenotethateachquestiononthetestiskeyed,orlinked,toaparticulartaskorsetoftasksinthetasklist.Therefore,areviewofthetasklists,withaneyetojudgingwhetheryouknowhowtoperformeachtasklisted,willprovideyouvaluableinformationasyouprepareforthetests. Therearefivetypesofmultiple-choicequestionsonthetests,eachofwhichisincludedinthesamplequestionsinthisbooklet.Notethedifferentinstructionsforeachquestiontype.

Besuretoreadeachquestioncarefully,(twice,ifnecessary)sothatyouunderstandexactlywhatisbeingasked.Each question tests a specific diagnostic or repair problem and has only one correct answer. Tosummarize,wesuggestthefollowingstepsbetaken: Step 1. Studythecontentlistforeachtestyouwillattempt. Step 2. Carefullyreadthetasklistforeacharea. Step 3. Gooverthesamplequestionstobecomefamiliarwitheachquestion type.Thisisveryimportant. Step 4. Reviewsteps1through3andidentifytheskillarea(s)whereyouneed additionalstudy.

Types of Knowledge Measured By the TestsThetypesofknowledgeandskillsyouwillneedtoknowtopassthetestsareasfollows:• Basic technical knowledge:Testsyourknowledgeofwhatisinasystemandhowthesystemworks,andwhataretheproperproceduresandprecautionstobefollowedinmakingrepairsandadjustments.

• Service or repair knowledge and skill:Testsyourunderstandingandabilitytoapplygenerallyacceptedrepairproceduresandprecautionsinassembly,disassembly,andreconditioningoperations;and inmaking inspectionsandadjustments.Alsotestsyourabilitytouseshopmanualsandprecisiontoolsofthetrade.

• Testing and diagnostic knowledge and skill:Testsyourabilitytorecognizeproblemsandtousegenerallyavailablemeasurementandtestingequipmenttomakeadiagnosis.Alsotestsyourabilitytotracetheeffectsofaparticularconditionandfindthecauseofaparticularsetofsymptoms.

Ifyouareanexperiencedandknowledgeabletechnician,acarefulreviewofthisbooklet,andadditionalbrush-uponthoseareasinwhichyouareweakest,isallyoushouldneedtopasstheASEtests.

At the Test Center—Some TipsArriveearlyenoughtofindthebuildingandtestingroom.Whenyoureachthelocation,waitintheassignedareauntiltheproctorbeginsthetestadministration.Heorshewillinstructyouinfillingouttheanswerbooklet(iftakingwrittentests)orloggingontothecomputer(iftakingcomputer-basedtests). Oncetestinghasbegun,keeptrackoftime.Donotspendtoolongonanysinglequestion.Besuretoreadeachquestioncarefullysothatyouunderstandexactlywhatisbeingasked.Donotmarkanswersinthetestbooklet;theymustbemarkedontheanswerbooklet.Yourtestwillnotbescoredifyouranswersarenotonyouranswerbooklet. Ifaquestionisdifficult,marktheanswerthatyouthinkiscorrectandputacheckbyitinthetestbook.(Computer-basedtestsallowyoutodothisonscreen.)Thengoontothenextquestion.Ifyoufinishbeforetimeisup,youmaygobacktothequestionsthatyouchecked. Test Content and Sample QuestionsThefollowingmaterialisdesignedtohelptechnicianspreparefortheASE certificationtests. EachsectionbeginswiththeTestSpecifications,whichwilllistthemaincategoriescoveredonthatparticulartestandthenumberoftestquestionsandpercentageofthetestdevotedtoeachtopic. TheTaskListdescribestheworkactivitiesatechnicianshouldbeabletoperformineachtechnicalareacoveredonthattest.Thislistwasdevelopedbyworkingtechniciansandtechnicalexpertsfromacrossthecountryandwillpro-videavaluablechecklistofwhattostudyforthetest. Thesetaskdescriptionsofferdetailedinformationtotechnicianspreparingforthetestandtopersonswhomaybeinstructingtechnicians.Thetasklistsmayalsoserveasguidelinesforquestionwriters,reviewers,andtestassemblers. Itshouldalsobenotedthatthenumberofquestionsineachcontentareamaynotequalthenumberoftaskslisted.Someofthetasksarecomplexandbroadinscopeandmaybecoveredbyseveralquestions.Othertasksaresimpleandnarrowinscopeandonequestionmaycoverseveraltasks.Themainobjectiveinlistingthetasksistodescribeaccuratelywhatisdoneonthejob,nottomakeeachtaskcorrespondtoaparticulartestquestion.
